EARN WHERE YOU LEARN
Victoria Universitys Students as Staffprogram employs hundreds of students eachyear in on-campus jobs so they can earn
where they learn.
The program recruits, prepares and links students
to University jobs that range from casual eventhelp at graduation ceremonies, to more specialised
roles in technology support, research or marketing
that connect to a students studies. In some cases,
students can obtain academic or workplace learningcredit while on the job.
Some 250 students are now on the VU payroll, but
the project team expects to more than triple that
number by year-end.
Jana Condos, a Law/Arts student, has been aStudents as Staff employee since the program
was piloted last year. She works for the StudentConnections Department, assisting other students
with inquiries about enrolments, fees, examsand graduations.
Jana says that being both a student and an
employee allows her to understand first-hand
the challenges students face when navigating
institutional procedures. She is included in staffmeetings and her managers often ask for her
ideas about streamlining processes. Jana also
represented the University to promote the
Students as Staff program at a recent nationalforum on graduate capability development.
The benefits are invaluable, she says. Ive gained
new skills in computers and technology, as well as
time management, teamwork and customer service.
Im also building professional networks both withinand outside the University.
Besides the advantage of being given flexible hours
around study, student employees are paid University
wages that allow them to work less and earn more
than they would at an average part-time job.
VU OPENS WORLD-CLASSSPORT CENTRE
Victoria Universitys new $68.5 million Sportand Learning precinct offers a world-classenvironment for sport and exercise researchand teaching, with state-of-the-art facilitiesincluding a high-altitude hotel, an enormousbiomechanics lab and a heat chamber.
The five-storey, five-star-rated green building is nowopen at VUs Footscray Park Campus. It providesa first-rate setting for the Universitys growingexpertise in sport and exercise research and teaching.Researchers are already collaborating within thebuildings 26 busy laboratories with organisationsranging from the Victorian and Australian Institutes ofSport to community groups that focus on public healthand education.
Researcher and lecturer Dr Simon Taylor said thecavernous biomechanics lab, with its 11-metre high
ceiling and door that opens onto a large grass oval, can be used to record and analyse anything from agolfers swing or football players kick, to a senior sgait and balance.
This is one of the best labs in the world for researchand teaching, Taylor said. It allows us to monitorhuman performance in a more natural setting thanmost biomechanics labs.
The sport building is ideal for teaching as well, withcollaborative classrooms and informal learning spacesfor courses such as exercise physiology, osteopathy, and sports engineering each part of the Universitys
targeted excellence in sport and active living.
Lecturers say that sweeping views over theMaribyrnong River valley from the building give theimpression that they are actually teaching outdoors.
VU TOPS YOUTH WORK TRAINING
Victoria University is at the forefront ofyouth work training, offering TAFE certificatesand diplomas (a common entry point formany youth workers) to a Masters degree in
Youth Services Management the first coursein Australia to combine traditional trainingin the welfare needs of young people, withbusiness skills.
Coordinator of Victoria Universitys Bachelor of Youth
Work Dr Robyn Broadbent said the area is no longerregarded as an activity undertaken by compassionatevolunteers or human service workers, but as aprofession in its own right.
Catherine Batty, an Outstanding VU Student of theYear and a Victorian Training awards nominee, decided to yield to her passion for social justicewhen she enrolled in the Diploma of Youth Work. She has since advanced to the Bachelor of Arts(Youth Work) and plans to do her fourth year incounselling training.
I wanted to surround myself with passionate mentors,so I chose VU, she said. The people I met at OpenDay when I first started looking had perspective. Theywere human and professional.
Catherine has enjoyed the opportunities offeredthrough the programs required placements, whereshe has acted as a workshop presenter in a learnerdriver education program with Hume City Council, among other roles.
The requirement of placement hours is different toother university courses and gives students a greatfeel for the youth sector, as well as making studentsstep out of their comfort zone, she said.
Next year, Victoria University will offer a new doubledegree in Youth Work and Sport and RecreationManagement for those interested in working withyoung people in recreation, outdoor education, localgovernment and community services programs.

MASTER CHEF FEVER HITS VU
Students from the School of Hospitalityare creating and serving professionallydesigned degustation menus under thedirection of award-winning chefs at VenU,
the Universitys training restaurant. At the latest event, held in May, Scott Pickett,
executive chef at the award-winning The Pointat Albert Park Lake, oversaw the efforts of
third-year apprentices in the kitchen as they
prepared a four-course dinner with matched
wines, while event management studentsperformed front-of-house roles.
A previous Master Chef dinner featured the
owner of La Luna Restaurant and television
chef Adrian Richardson.
VU Acting Hospitality Program ManagerShawn Vlaeminck said many celebrity chefsviewed working with aspiring hospitality
professionals as a way of giving back to the
industry since many started at TAFE themselves.
Events where our students work with famousindustry chefs are a great experience for everyone,
he said. Students experience whats involved in
preparing and producing a large-scale dinner
for up to 130 people under the guidance of wellrespected professionals.
Ben Sharma is a networking whiz with bigdreams of success.
As winner of the CISCO Live 2011 competition,
the IT buff beat students from across Australia to
become part of the networking giants team fora week and work on the CISCO Live event at the
Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
I needed to show them my passion for networking
by writing a letter and describing my future plans
after my course, which is to be a networkingadministrator, he said.
Ben originally enrolled at VU in a computer sciencedegree because of his networking interests, but
soon swapped over to the Advanced Diploma of
Information Technology (Network Security) whenhe realised hed get more of the hands-on training
that employers look for.
I love to troubleshoot hardware issues and get
involved in the technical aspects of networking,
he said. Victoria University provided me with theknowledge and practical skills to be job-ready.

MELTON CAMPUS A UNITEDNATIONS OF ENGLISH LEARNERS
The Melton Campus offers Englishlanguage courses to a diverse set of newmigrants who make up a growing part ofthe local shires population boom.
Nearly one quarter of Melton Shire residents
are now born overseas, and many learnEnglish through Victoria University. Its Melton
classrooms often resemble the United Nations,
with students from up to a dozen countrieslearning together.
Dhammika Fernando, program manager of
AMEP language studies, said many English as
a Second Language (ESL) students at Meltonare newly arrived migrants eligible for the
Federal Governments 510 hours of free
English language classes. But many equallyeligible new settlers are not taking advantageof the program, she said.
We realise there are many more people out
there who may think their English is goodenough but they need to know theres so much
more they could be learning about their new
homeland. They could even take these classes
simply to socialise, she said.
Weekend and evening classes are available toaccommodate busy schedules.
MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Help people tackle their alcohol or drug abuse
problems by enrolling in Victoria UniversitysCertificate IV in Alcohol and other Drugs.
A job in this field can be very challenging
but also very rewarding. VUs course helps
participants develop the theoretical and
practical skills required to provide a rangeof services and interventions for clients with
issues related to substance abuse.
Graduates find employment in community-
based organisations, residential rehabilitation
and outreach services. The one-year course can
be studied full time or part time.

BUILDING BUSINESS SKILLS
The Diploma of Enterprise is your first step toa successful business career.
The course focuses on developing a broad range of
business knowledge and skills to undertake further
study at undergraduate level in business, or pursuea career in business management, accounting and
marketing.
The Diploma of Enterprise provides skills andknowledge of Australian and international business
cultures, business principles, organisationalstructures and socio-political-legal operational
environments.
Graduates are eligible to receive guaranteed
credit into the second year of Victoria Universitys
Bachelor of Business.
Carpenters and bricklayers are now insuch hot demand for the wests boomingconstruction industry that students are nearlyguaranteed a job once they complete their
apprenticeship.Victoria University carpentry teacher Ross Firth saidsome of the worlds oldest trades are now facing
a critical shortage of newcomers which will only
get worse as the average age of bricklayers and
carpenters continues to increase.
With some 30,000 new houses planned for the
booming Melton area over the next few years,
students from Victoria Universitys 17-week pre-
apprenticeship programs in Melton are quicklysnapped up.
We have a backlog of residential builders wantingto employ students, but most want them to have
their pre-app before they will take them on,
he says.
After their pre-apprenticeship, students work asan apprentice with an employer for a further three
and a half years before they are fully qualified as a
carpenter or bricklayer.
Registered builders can earn very good salaries
because they can have a few houses on the go atonce, he said.
Pre-requisites for the program are a minimum age
of 15, a love of the outdoors and teamwork, and a
good understanding of maths and English. The construction boom in Melbournes west has
generated strong demand for allied professions, especially for tilers, who transform unfinished walls
and floors in bathrooms and kitchens of homes and
commercial buildings.
VU offers a 16-week Certificate II and III inceramics floor and wall tiling at its Newport
Campus. Graduates can work as apprentices in new
buildings, or undertake repair and renovation work.
