Newsletter No. 30 - Term 4– Week 1 Thursday 8 October2015
From the Principal………
WELCOME BACK TO TERM 4 This morning I went to a briefing launching
Victoria – The Education State
This slogan will be on all new number plates. I am very pleased indeed that education is gaining this high profile. We should be very proud of the state of education in Victoria. Government school teachers and education staff are extremely proud of the work they do with students, families and the community. These people never seek out recognition but they certainly do deserve it. All staff at Kalinda multi-task whenever it is needed and many parents and/or students have been supported by education staff for different reasons. I see that having education forefront on number plates and on Victorian logos may encourage more recognition and appreciation for the work that teachers and education staff do. Along with the recognition through logos, Victoria has developed a new education curriculum. The targets for this curriculum are:
more students developing strong critical and creative thinking skills; more students excelling in Reading; more students excelling in Maths; more students excelling in The Arts; and more students excelling in Science.
To support these targets, funding and strategies will be put in place so that more students will:
stay in education; develop more resilience; be physically active,
creating happy, healthy and resilient kids. I am very proud and pleased to be part of this development, especially as at Kalinda, we already have put many of these strategies and programs in place. The new curriculum will begin next year, however, because Kalinda has been working with the Education Department on curriculum, we are well prepared and already using the documentation. Kalinda is always on the forefront of education initiatives. As usual, Term 4 will be a very exciting and busy term, with some significant events happening towards the end of the year. Grade 6 Graduation will be on Wednesday 16
th December and Family
Carols will be held on Wednesday 9th December. During the term the 2016 Foundation students will
be participating in their Transition Program starting in late October. There will be sporting events; swimming, parent information nights, and classroom presentations and celebrations and don’t forget the Twilight Night Market on Friday 20
th November. Please look at the school Events Calendar and
make sure you don’t miss any of these exciting events. GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL

th November
1 Helper for 25th November
2 Helpers for 27th November
1 Helper for 3rd
December Just a reminder that there is a 2 icypole limit per student. We are asking if parents could please limit the amount of money your children are bringing to school for Canteen purchases to just a couple of dollars each and to put the money somewhere very safe in their bag so it won’t get lost. Some children have been known to hand over $5 and $10 notes and this is a bit too much for young children to be carrying to school. Your cooperation in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Canteen Summer Menu – A reminder that the new Canteen Summer Menu was sent home at the end of last term, effective immediately. Please throw out your Winter menu. JO O’CALLAGHAN CANTEEN MANAGER

Here at Kalinda we are a SunSmart school, which means students are now required to wear a Kalinda-approved hat. These hats are wide brimmed with the Kalinda Logo and can be purchased at our Uniform Shop for $15.00. During Term 4 students will need to bring their hats to school and wear them at all times outside for sport, recess, lunchtimes and any other activities outside. If your child is not wearing their hat he/she will be asked to sit in the shade and may miss out on recess, lunchtimes, or any activities being held. Please read the SunSmart advice sheet below.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD BRINGS THEIR HAT TO SCHOOL EVERY DAY THIS TERM.

‘Alienz In Oz’ Reflection
On Thursday 17th September the Grade 5 & 6 Drama Club did a production called Alienz in Oz. The whole school was invited to watch the production.
The alienz in the show were from the planet Marlon. All of the alienz got assignments to go to a country on the planet Earth. Bob and Bob were sent to Australia to collect information from typical Australians. But when they arrived they found Australians could talk different languages and wear different clothes but they were all Australians.
Some of the highlights were: when they dressed very quickly behind the scenes; when the robot exploded; the alienz were talking to the females and asking if they were male; when Bob and Bob asked where the big smoke was (Sydney Harbour Bridge); when they teleported to the outback of Australia; the Australian holographic; the confidence in all the actors; how professionally it was done; and when they asked at the party, “What was cake?”
Well done to all the performers and everyone involved. The show was very well done and they all cooperated together really well. We are sure that everybody really enjoyed it, because we sure did!

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program 8th October – Term 1 – Week 1
Hello Everyone! Welcome back to school and welcome to Term 4 at OSHClub 2015! So many exciting things coming up we hardly know how to contain ourselves! There’s the curriculum day on Friday October 30th. Halloween the day after on Saturday October 31st. Then there’s cup day on Tuesday November 3rd. Before we know it will be December and all of the holiday fun and anticipation that comes with it! This term our theme will be “Christmas and Holidays” and we encourage all children to get involved in our art and craft activities that we will have running. If there are any special art and craft activities that you would like to do whilst at OSHClub for family or friends we strongly encourage you to let us know or bring them along and we can make resources available for you to complete them during your time with us. Another reminder that children MUST WEAR hats AND sunscreen whilst at our Before and After School Care service. We supply Coles’ branded 50+ protection sunscreen here at the service, however, if your child has specific sunscreen needs we encourage parents to either leave some with us at the program or ensure that children have some in their bags when they arrive. Children will strictly NOT be allowed to play outside if they do not have both hat and sunscreen. We are currently in the process of placing an order for more resources including board games, art and craft resources, as well as more sporting equipment. We encourage all children to look after the equipment and resources here at OSHClub as we have a limited budget per term to purchase new things and cannot keep replacing things such as sports balls each term. We look forward to hearing how everyone’s holidays were! Come in and tell us all about it! Kind Regards, Kalli Boag, Michelle Dark, Samantha Lawrence, Wendy Reid and Tayla Alderson.
Program phone: 0439 992 434 Coordinator: Kalli Boag.

Nutrition Tips - Get in quick or miss out!
One of the habits that is unhelpful for maintaining a healthy weight is eating fast. When you eat fast you lose track of how you are filling up. It takes approximately 20 minutes for your brain to talk to your stomach and say “I’m full”. You may have experienced this if you have been really hungry and eaten your meal quickly, possibly had seconds then after a little while realised you were too full. If you tend to eat fast or encourage your children to eat fast this is not helpful for appetite control or understanding when you are full or filling up. If you put something on the table and then say “Get in quick or you will miss out” it teaches kids that you don’t have to think about whether you are hungry, it doesn’t allow them to feel when they are getting full and if it’s a “treat” there is no time to decide whether they even want it - just eat it fast or you won’t get another chance. If you are providing a “treat” it is more helpful to allow your child to choose when they eat their serve – now or later. This way you teach children there is no rush to eat a ‘sometimes’ food and they don’t have to force it down when they may prefer to wait. If you are sitting down to a meal its important there is no rush or race for food and that everyone is given time to eat. Toddler tantrums are a separate issue- different rules apply to those little ones who make the meal last toooo long! Lisa Renn, Accredited Practising Dietitian www.dietproofyourkids.com.au
