Thank you, Rosanna,
• Good evening.
• You all look very smart this evening
• One of the greatest joys of being part of a major
university like UniSA is the sight of new graduands
crossing the stage to receive their parchments
• and then leave to find new careers. Sometimes it’s
‘thank god they’re gone – joking … sometimes
• But let me tell you something else: it’s far more exciting
and rewarding when they come back to share their
success stories with us.
----
• Tonight, here in Pridham Hall, we are celebrating and
recognising those who take that success to the next level
5 | P a g e
• UniSA graduates who make a real difference to their
communities and become role models for those who
come after them.
• 1) We all look fabulous – please give yourselves a round
of applause; and
• 2) This is my favourite night of the year because tonight
we get to share the stories of remarkable people who
have all taken some or all of their education from UniSA
and proudly represent us as alumni on the global stage
----
• We are justifiably proud because not only do our alumni
succeed in the careers they choose,
• but they understand that education is both a privilege and
a responsibility.
----
6 | P a g e
• that responsibility is to give back to their community
some of the opportunities that education has given them.
• They do this through various means, most often using
their position and influence to improve the lives of others
who need a hand up in the form of scholarships, work
experience or job opportunities.
• Sometimes it’s as simple as mentoring; other times they
help us build a magnificent hall with their name on it. It
takes all sorts.
• No pressure on our award winners here tonight … just
saying Andrew built a hall …
• The people you are about to meet tonight embody the
graduate qualities that UniSA imbues in our graduates
and then some - I cannot wait to formally introduce you
to:
7 | P a g e
o Cyber security expert, Michael Burgess;
o Entrepreneur, Pauline Wong;
o Human rights activist, Tirana Hassan; and
o Artist, Darren Siwes (SEEVERS).
• They’ve got some great stories to tell so you’re in for
an exceptional evening.
• Mike, can we refer to you as “M”? It’s so fitting …
and we’ve got the suits on and everything.
----
• Now, while I’ve got you, let me briefly tell you a little
about what your university has been up to lately.
• I should start with the reminder that your uni is one of
the very best young universities in the world as
assessed by all the ratings agencies that matter.
----
8 | P a g e
• Independently and objectively 100 per cent of our
research is considered at or above world class by the
Excellence in Research Australia assessment;
----
• we are ranked Number One in Australia for industry
research income by Times Higher rankings; and
• the Good Universities Guide ranked us top in the state
for our students being the most likely to gain full-time
jobs on graduation,
• they also ranked us top in the state for students who are
most satisfied with their education, who are most
engaged with their peers and who have the best learning
resources.
• But who’s counting (we are)
----
9 | P a g e
• One of the highlights of the year was our being
awarded Bronze Accreditation in the Science in
Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) initiative – SAGE
promotes gender equity and diversity in science,
technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine
(STEMM) in Australia.
• Now, just in case you think a bronze award is
recognition for coming third -
• - I know Australians tend to think everything’s a race –
• Bronze is the best you can currently get
• Bronze means that we have been recognised by the
Athena SWAN Charter from the United Kingdom as
having made a commitment to gender equity and
diversity across the institution.
• Next step is we will go for gold.
----
10 | P a g e
• While we have been busy accepting our many
accolades, we have also put in quite a lot of work to re-
orient our university to ensure we continue our upward
trajectory and grow into the future.
• Of course, this is a future in a world where technology
has transformed industry and the digital world has lifted
and changed students’ expectations exponentially.
• It’s a world where business and society are more inter-
connected and the challenges they face require
multidisciplinary responses;
• A future requiring research with impact; and
lamentably in an environment where government
funding is falling short of the mark.
• Ours is a State with 31% participation in higher
education. My predecessor Denise Bradley did a review
that set a target of 40%. SA has a way to go to reach
that goal and we are pushing into a head wind of frozen
funding.
11 | P a g e
----
• We need to find ways to support our efforts to ensure
that institutions like ours that are nurturing and teaching
these next generations, can continue to do so.
• Admitting students on the basis of equity.
• Allowing them to fulfil their potential.
• And so, to thrive against this backdrop and continue to
be the university that career-minded students turn to,
because they want to succeed.
• UniSA is changing.
----
• Our future is summed up in our strategic plan,
Enterprise25, a plan of operation for the next six years.
12 | P a g e
• People often muse on what a university produces …
[DL off piste]
• Enterprise 25 outlines our objective to become a
university that’s totally focused on our product – the
programs our students need and the research and
pedagogy that informs those programs. The great staff
we need to ensure those programs and our student
experience are exceptional.
• We want to offer programs that that students need for
successful careers
• Programs that are considered amongst the best in the
world because they have been informed by cutting-edge
research and pedagogy
• The outcomes we expect, the outcomes we are going to
see - are:
o enhanced teaching quality and an exceptional
student experience;
13 | P a g e
o strengthened inter-disciplinary collaboration and
collegiality;
o improved efficiency of our administration; and
o improved research capability and rankings.
----
• Just like you have been, we want all our students to be
equipped for successful global careers.
----
• We already have some of the world’s very best
academic programs, according to the 2019 QS Subject
Rankings.
• Our nursing and exercise sports science programs are in
the world’s best 100.
• Times Higher Education’s Rankings put our Law
degree in the world’s top 100 -
14 | P a g e
• (not a bad effort or a 12-year old Law degree you’d
have to say);
• CEO Magazine’s MBA rankings rated our online MBA
as the Number 1 MBA in Australia – and Number 6 in
the world.
• [I’ll say that again so you can clap – Number 1 MBA in
Australia]
• The UniSA MBA has also been awarded five stars for
10 consecutive years by the Graduate Management
Association of Australia,
• and has been rated the top MBA in Australia by AFR
BOSS Magazine for 10 consecutive years.
• Just saying – ours is the only MBA in the country to
achieve that feat … you can clap again now.
• If you’ve got a UniSA MBA, there’s an envelope you
can place your thank you donations in ... if you haven’t
got one, we can sign you up later.
15 | P a g e
----
• Simply put, we plan to be ranked amongst the best in
the world in a lot more of our programs, and being
young and agile, with Enterprise25 as our blueprint,
that’s achievable.
• First, we have to make a few changes.
• While we are undergoing the single largest change
program in the last 20 years of UniSA, we are going
about it the UniSA way – people focussed – outcome
driven
----
• It’s no accident that UniSA ranked amongst the world’s
best young universities.
• We have always been agile and responsive and focused
on creating new knowledge that’s useful to our
community,
16 | P a g e
• and transferring that knowledge through our teaching so
that we graduate people already equipped for the future
of work.
• As Australia’s University of Enterprise, it is fitting that
we evolve and change as we keep up with the changing
demands of our students and our research partners.
• Our enterprise transformation will cement our position as
the University of Choice for professional careers;
• as the University of Choice for business and industry
seeking to access our research to help to solve their
problems;
• as the University of Choice for people who truly want to
make a difference; and
• as a University that gets stuff done.
17 | P a g e
• Of course, our ambition to be the University of Choice
for Aboriginal Peoples is as important today as it was
when we first became a University 28 years ago.
• Watch this space … we have another significant birthday
on the horizon.
• I am immensely proud of this university and I know you
are too. I am proud of the fact that we have always made
social change and development a priority.
• That we are committed to the health and wellbeing of our
community and that we add real value to our state’s
economy.
• I’m proudest of all of the part we play in our graduates’
success
• I thank you for continuing to be a vital part of the
University of South Australia.
• Enjoy the rest of the evening.
