Dear Tioga Hills Families,
The beginning of November is here and we are in full swing at Tioga Hills! October was filled with many fun events for our students and their families. Thank you for supporting our PTA through the Fun(D) walk. The students had an enjoyable experience walking and visiting with local mascots! The Fall Fest held last week was a big success! Thank you to the PTA and many additional volunteers who helped make it a fun event for all. Tioga Hills 3 and 4 year olds were invited to the annual 1000 Book Club Kick-off event last week. If you were not able to make it, we would love for you to reach out to us for more information! The Apalachin Fire Department did their Fire Safety presentations for Grades K-3, which were enjoyed by all!
The month of November is a time to be thankful for so many things. On November 9th, we will start by thanking our local Veterans with a short pa-rade and assembly at 9:15. The following Monday, November 12th, will be a day off from school to observe Veteran’s Day.
Additionally, our Building Planning Team and Actions Count committee are planning a culminating Day of Cooperation on Tuesday, November 20th. We have been talking, reading, and learning about Cooperation for the last few months. On this special day, students will engage in various activities throughout the day that focus on the theme- Cooperation! On this day, we will also kick off our annual holiday Food Drive!
Lastly, our 5th grade class will be preparing to help our community through their annual Community Box Project, our Kindergarteners will host their Turkey Tunes Celebration on November 21st, and the THE Musical will be held on November 16th and 17th! We hope you’ll join us at our many upcom-ing events in this busy month!
We are thankful every day for the support that we receive from the Tioga Hills community! I am especially grateful to be able to spend my days with many caring and dedicated staff members and students!
Thank you,
Hayley Crimmins, Principal

Character Education Connection: Our Actions Count (Character Education) Committee meets regularly to continue initia-tives at Tioga Hills. We are in our fifth year of using the ACTIONS COUNT phrase to focus our activities and as a teaching tool. Our long term goal is that students know what this phrase means in all aspects of their lives. Thank you to all who returned the orange flier “Calling All Leaders”. Those that gave us their choices in priority order have and will begin leadership jobs. We hope to be able to honor 2nd choices again this year! Helping in our school is a great way to show that
ACTIONS COUNT! It would be helpful if you have a conversation with your child(ren) about making a commitment to these important jobs. Please call if you have any questions about these jobs. The Actions Count Committee thanks you for supporting character development at home!
In the Classroom:
DUSO and KELSO are finishing up their work in Second Grade and then will be off to the First Grade classrooms to work on self-awareness and problem solving skills. We focus on strategies to help them solve the day-to-day small problems that arise and children learn how to have relationships with their peers in the most healthy and productive way. I incor-porate the character themes of leadership and making our Actions Count into the lessons.
As always please call if I can help in any way! I can reached @757-2366 [email protected]

During the month of November, the 5th grade classes will be working to collect toiletry items to help with our Community Box Project. We have done this project for several years now and always find it to be a rewarding and heartwarming ex-perience during the winter season.
The boxes will be assembled November 30th. This is such a nice way to show co-operation and that our Actions Count in the Community. Also on this day, the 5th grade luncheon will take place. This will serve as a nice way to celebrate our ac-tions as a unified team. The boxes will be delivered to the Apalachin Food Pantry that afternoon so that they can be dis-tributed to families during the month of December.
Thank you in advance to all the 5th grade parents and students that help to make this event so special.

Grade Level Spotlight: 4th Grade
In November, our fourth graders will be starting a composer unit, featuring Jo-hann Sebastian Bach!
Bach was a German Baroque Era compos-er, born in 1685. His most famous works include the Brandenburg Concertos, the Well-Tempered Clavier, and the cele-brated organ work Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. Students will explore the life and music of Bach in a variety of ways, including acrostic poems, listening maps, move-ment, and crossword puzzles. A student favorite is the composer job application activity, in which each student must pre-tend they are Johann Sebastian Bach and apply for a musical job accordingly. The unit wraps up with a viewing of the movie Mr. Bach Comes to Call.

PLAYGROUND AND COLD WEATHER
Please make sure your child is dressed properly each day for playground during the cold months. Children do go outdoors for playground every day (weather permitting). At this time of year, students must have a coat when going outside. For winter, and especially when there is snow on the ground, children should wear hats, gloves and boots outside. Following is an excerpt from the Parent Handbook: Your cooperation in seeing that your child is prepared for the cold and snowy weather is greatly appreciated.
Children look forward to participating in outdoor activi-ties. A one-half hour recess period is conducted outside each day during reasonable weather. We ask that your child be excused only when illness is evident or upon ad-vice by your physician. A written explanation from the parent is required in these situations.
Congratulations to all 5th grade students who participated in the 35th Annual Great Pumpkin Run on Wednesday, October
17th.
The pumpkin run is a fun, fall-themed event that takes place each year at Arnold Park and is open to all 5th and 6th grade students in the Vestal School District. It is a wonderful oppor-tunity to get together with other students from different buildings and compete in a fun ac-tivity.
A special congratulations to Tess Labosky and Lindsey Steele for finishing in the top 10 for 5th grade girls. Great job everyone! Keep running and stay healthy.

News From The Health Office
PARKING LOT SAFETY
There is only parking allowed in designated areas of the parking lots. For safety reasons you must adhere to the following:
There should be NO parking in the bus lanes dur-ing the morning and afternoon drop off and pick up times.
There should be NO parking at the end of the day in the lot other than in designated parking spaces. It is a concern that some parents are parking at the end of the center designated area in the ac-tual area for driving. This hinders traffic flow and line of vision of both other vehicles as well as our children. We have ordered new cones to stop people from parking here.
There are enough spaces in the lower lot to ac-commodate parent pick-up vehicles, so make sure to use them.
No children should be picked up by an adult in the back parking lot.
Dress you child appropriately! The “Lost and Found” bin is in the Health Office, please feel free to have your child check in with me if they have misplaced anything. Also, label-ing your child’s jacket, clothing items, etc., with permanent marker is a good idea!
Another friendly reminder…..please keep you child home for 24 hours after a fever or vom-iting and please call me (757-2268) or email me ([email protected]) each day your child will be late or absent.
The following two (2) pages has some important information on the flu vaccine. I encour-age you to talk to your pediatrician about getting the flu shot this year.
Happy November!
Cold weather is coming so here is a few reminders from the Health Office.
Let’s congratulate

A big thanks to all who helped with our 10th Annual 1000 Book Club Kick-off Event held on Wednesday, October 24th. It was a well-attended, fun evening! Special thanks to 1000 Book Club Committee volun-teers, our student alumni volunteers, as well as Mrs. Crimmins, Mrs. Roloson, and Mrs. Thurm for their support of the pro-gram. The continued success of this early reading program relies upon the support of our PTA and school community. Thank you!

The scouts of Pack 43 had a fun time in October. Many of our scouts went on a camping trip near Ithaca that was Halloween themed. It is known as Boo at Barton and the scouts were able to do archery, BB Gun, and crafts. One of the more fun items was a ghost themed balloon race! Our next event was more somber in nature as we properly retired a Unites States flag by holding a flag retirement ceremony in which a flag is cut into strips and burned. This is con-sidered the proper and respectful way to re-tire a flag that has finished being glorious. Coming soon will be a camp out for our older scouts, the Webelos and Arrow of Light Dens (4th and 5th grade) that will join the Boy Scout Troop and they will learn some of what they will need to know when they finish being Cub Scouts and become Boy Scouts. As always, we contin-ue to welcome new members and if you’d like to join or have questions, contact Tim Lilley at [email protected].
A huge THANK YOU to all for supporting the 5th grade class.... thank you to everyone who purchased and sold Save Around Books!
Each child in the school made a piece of artwork that can be printed on a wide variety of high quality items from Square 1 Art, from ornaments to magnets and more. Watch Friday folders for information on purchasing these items, which make perfect holiday gifts (Orders are due by: Wednesday, November 7th) and items will arrive by the first week of December!
Thank you to
our entire school community for another successful FUN(D) WALK! We raised close to $7000 for our school and gave out 24 prizes to students for hitting their pledge goal! Everyone brought home a Sweet Frog Coupon for participating as well in their Fri-day folder! We appreciate your support of our PTA!
