TRANSCRIPT
When Richard, the middle aged man, met the five year old
version of himself, the child asked him “you have seen life,
I am about to begin mine, so please tell me what is life? ”
The older Richard answered in two words “Life is!”
In other words, life is not about what happened in the past
or what might happen in the future. Life is about the here
and the now! It is our preoccupation with either what in the
past or what might or should happen in the future that suc-
ceeds in ensuring that we ruin our now. Interestingly, the
here and now moment is also called the Present, and the
word present is also synonymous with gift! Is it a coinci-
dence? Is it not true that the best gift we can give to our-
selves is the ability to appreciate each moment of our lives?
That appreciation for the moment would come from learn-
ing to listen to the stories from other people’s lives and also
telling our own stories to others. These stories would gener-
ate understanding, bonding and most of all empathy. Basic
traits that determine our humanity.
It is again these stories that help us to position ourselves as
being a part of the larger reality where we, each one of us,
are a part of a larger reality, one of the many specks in the
immense canvas called existence. Once this appreciation of
being a part of a larger whole sinks in, then one can con-
template meaning meaningful contribution to oneself and to
others. This is where the concept of design thinking comes
in. We see the big picture of events and situations and try to
bring about change by designing interventions that are ho-
listic in nature. But this is easier said than done. Far too
many of us, for too long a time have become habituated to
the concept of an aspirin solution. The aspirin solution is
the concept of quick fix solutions where one treats the
symptoms rather than the cause. That this type of thing
does not make sense can be easily appreciated from the ma-
jor health concerns for the modern man, be it diabetes,
heart ailments or hypertension. All of these are supposed to
be life style diseases, but instead of trying to actively remove
the circumstances that would reduce and finally eliminate
the living conditions that cause them, we
are pushing more and more people, from
younger and even younger age groups to
embrace life styles that would make them
prone to such diseases!
Design thinking would look at the picture
in a holistic manner and come up with
solutions that are much wider and com-
prehensive. In other words, if happiness
and contentment is what one is looking
for, design thinking would look at the var-
ious conditions that would be imperative
to achieving it. It would identify that earn-
ing more and more money may be a con-
tributory condition that ensures reaching
the state of happiness but it does not re-
duce it to a binary. It also looks at the oth-
er factors that would lead to a state of
happiness and create a design that would
maximize the changes of reaching the stat-
ed objective.
Will you tell us your story and talk about
your dreams? For in the scheme of things,
the design for life and living necessarily
incorporates everyone around and unless
others are happy I would be naïve to think
I can be happy alone! Please be happy,
for in your happiness is mine, you owe it
to yourself and to me! ■
“Though we never met him, I can feel that
he is a part of this Institute”, says a stu-
dent of PGP 17 as they leave the second
edition of the Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
memorial lecture series on the 27th of July.
Kalam Sir was truly a visionary, the likes
of whom have seldom walked among us.
His association with the institute, and his
indelible mark on it, makes all of us proud,
and inspires us in our future endeavours.
To honour the Missile Man’s legacy, Pad-
ma Vibhushan Shri. G Madhavan Nair,
former Chairman, ISRO was the chief
guest for lecture this year. He delivered a
lecture on “Space and Society – an Indian
Scenario”. In two hours, he took students,
children, dignitaries and faculty alike on a
journey through the history of India’s own
space endeavours. From its humble begin-
nings to the behemoth it has become. He
introduced the students to legends like
Vikram Sarabhai and brought them closer
to the late Dr. Kalam. With stories of his
childhood in Rameswaram and his resolve
and vision while he was in ISRO, Dr. Nair
helped bring the legends of Kalam alive at
the Meghalaya State Convention Centre
that July morning
In the audience were the students, chil-
dren from schools across Shillong, digni-
taries from the government, journalists
and our beloved faculties. A painting and
essay writing competition had been held
across the schools of Shillong to honour
the Great Man’s visions and ideals, and
the winners were presented their awards
Remembering
Kalam Sir
by Mr. Nair and the Director. Though,
Mr. Nair’s lecture encompassed space and
society, the interactive Q&A session
which followed touched on topics ranging
from education, politics, civic infrastruc-
ture and urban planning.
Continuing his legacy in the Institute, the
Director announced a 2000 sqr metre au-
ditorium in the new campus to be named
after Dr. Kalam, which will also be graced
by a statue of the missile man to honour
his legacy. The day ended with a solemn
memorial on campus to remember Dr.
Kalam’s life and legacy. Though a sombre
occasion, his ideals and his principles will
continue to lead us forward and guide us
through our lives. ■
Indian Institute of Management, Shillong
set foot into the 10th year of its journey of
dispensing unique management education
on the 3rd of July 2017. The institute inau-
gurated its 10th Post-Graduate Diploma in
Management (PGDM) batch and the 6th
Fellow-Programme in Management batch
in the presence of Mr. Sadashiv Nayak,
CEO Future Retail Ltd. and Big Bazaar,
the Chief Guest for the occasion.
The Director briefed the participants
about what lay ahead for them in the next
two years, and how to make the most of
it. They were also apprised of the im-
mense learning opportunities that awaited
them in the time to come.
“As students, observe, learn, and discover
your strengths, and enjoy every aspect of
your two years as it will shape each one of
you as a strong individual", said Mr.
Nayak.
Emphasizing the ethos of the Institute,
the Director, Professor Amitabha De,
said, “Strong individual capability and
feeling of togetherness is what makes
IIM Shillong a family.” ■
This year the incoming batch kicked
things off with a talent show, here’s what
they had to say:
What do the seniors do for the new batch?
Give us a fresher’s party. Then what do
we do in lieu of that? Organize a talent
show, this time themed as ‘Tamasha’.
It serves as a platform where inner talents
flush out and the whole batch gets a
glimpse of what the whole batch gets a
glimpse of what the new batch has to of-
fer. It is, and was endowed with loads odf
dance performances, complementing them
are beautiful vocal performances. Whether
solo or group performances, all are served
on the plate. Is there something missing?
Yes! Of course, how can one forget vari-
ous skits or the fun filled anchoring and
the performances by our seniors as well.
All this serves as a beautiful amalgamation
of joy and blissfulness, treated with loads
of love and friendship.
TAMASHA!
Dahi Handi was on of the most boisterous events organized
by the Cultural Committee of IIM SHILLONG. Both
batches were eager for a much awaited break and celebrated
the occasion on a grand scale.
The event took place on 15th August, 2017 after the Flag
hoisting ceremony. The fun started at around 10a.m and in
between all the arrangements were finalized. The event was
kickstarted with desi beats to bring everyone out onto the
volleyball court. To bring out the enthusiasm and gusto
among the crowd, we started with the ‘PITTHU’ game. The
mob tried their best to hit both the stones on the ground
and the others running around. After sometime the crowd
thickened and the ultimate event i.e ‘The Matki Phod’ was
initiated by the junior PGP batch. The boys, ambitious as
ever tried to go for the Handi in a three layered human pyra-
mid. The many failures and falls only made their victory
sweeter when they finally got to the handi on their third at-
tempt. They were hindered by the many buckets of water
thrown at them by the crowd.
DAHI HANDI
The highlight was when the girls team
formed their human pyramid and accom-
plished in breaking the handi. In the
meanwhile refreshments were served to
the crowd. People were simultaneously
grooving to the best Bollywood numbers.
A total of 4 pots were broken by the sen-
ior by both the batches. This was followed
by a game of kabaddi between seniors and
juniors. The rain pouring at the right time,
made the event more special and memora-
ble. The two batches were enjoying them-
selves to the utmost while dancing to the
beats of music. People were rolling each
other in the mud and everyone was having
a gala time. The enthusiastic crowd was
not ready to stop and the celebration con-
tinued for a long time. So THE AMBAS-
SADORS OF HAPPINESS aka THE
CULTURAL COMMITTEE along with
the other committees and the students
were successful in creating an ambience of
joy and happiness in the CAMPUS IN
CLOUDS ! ■
Corporate alumni workshops present a
wonderful opportunity for the current
batches to learn from the industry experi-
ence of the alumni; and for the alumni to
connect with their alma mater. We were
fortunate to host Mr. Saurabh Kumar Sin-
ha, alumni from the second batch of IIM
Shillong (PGP ‘09), currently working as
Category Manager in USHA. He was ac-
companied by Ms. Shubhi Oberoi. Along
with providing an insight into the life of a
marketer, Mr. Sinha also gave a brief de-
scription about the various profiles in the
marketing domain and guided the young
inquisitive minds on how to make the
transition from an MBA graduate to a
marketing professional.
Drawing inspiration from her own journey
as a marketer, Ms. Shubhi Oberoi bought
in practical aspects of working in the cor-
porate environment and spoke about dif-
ferent roles in marketing working in tan-
dem with consumer and business objec-
tives. The interactive Q&A session that
followed the presentation allowed the
family of IIM Shillong to learn from each
other. The students here look forward to
more such sessions in the near future. ■
Nurturing Minds is a campaign and con-
science of the IIM Shillong community
that teaches underprivileged children of
Shillong. At the heart of this movement, is
its endeavour to carry forward the teach-
ings of Dr. Kalam and create a difference.
This unique initiative, which currently
reaches out to 60 children, across seven
schools, in Shillong including nearby Puri-
ang, has undertaken to nurture and ignite
young minds. The initiative thus far, in its
one year journey, has reached out to more
than 80 students of classes eight and nine.
As part of the programme the children are
taught Mathematics, wherein communica-
tion related activities are also conducted.
The initiative that began on Oct 15, 2015,
in memory of Dr. Kalam to spread his
lessons and promote his learnings, has
blossomed in its first year. The venture
consistent with its undertaking looks at
inspiring young children to study in a fun
way, along with encouraging them to take
up their interests and pursue textbook les-
sons in a practical way. Classes are led
through imaginative visual guides and in-
genious, creative teaching methods are
used. The target of the program is to em-
power learning, encourage innovativeness
and fearlessness, amongst the understud-
ies, as Dr. Kalam had imagined.
The program is widely supported by the
NURTURING
MINDS
IIM Shillong community, and recognised
across Shillong, has been a joyous experi-
ence for all student volunteers, teachers
and the administration. It has struck a
chord with all those involved, enveloped
by vivacious energy and positivity.
Children are the future thought developers
and it is this quest of acquainting and fa-
miliarizing the students with boundless
possibilities of the world through mathe-
matics that keeps everyone going. Apart
from teaching the students every Saturday,
the initiative has helped students ideate
science projects, wherein volunteers have
also worked towards helping schools con-
nected with the program better deal with
their everyday operations and become ad-
ministratively stable.
In celebrating the spirit of “igniting” and
“nurturing” minds, the initiative is spread-
ing its wings and starting a children’s li-
brary on the 85th birth anniversary of our
beloved and revered teacher “Kalam Sir”.
The future objectives of the program in-
clude efforts to broaden its compass, con-
tact more schools and children, help them
prosper holistically, and work in synchro-
nisation with the schools to create a fa-
vourable learning environment. intended

The annual sports meet of eastern IIMs, IGNATIA-17, took place at
IIM Indore from July 22-24.
The event saw participation from IIM Indore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Shil-
long, Raipur and Ranchi. IIM Shillong travelled with a contingent of 26
students, representing the institute in football, basketball, badminton,
table tennis, volleyball and squash. The contingent had a healthy mix of
both the batches of PGP (16&17), highlighting the institute’s commit-
ment to sports. The football team secured the first place, defeating IIM
Indore & Calcutta to gold. The badminton team won silver, narrowly
losing out to Indore in a close encounter. The squash and table tennis
teams secured the third place. The event was meticulously planned out,
ensuring it went without any glitches despite unfavorable weather con-
ditions. It was a great experience for our teams to battle it out against
some of the best players of the sport. The teams fought with a lot of
vigor and heart, showing some great team spirit. The event also provid-
ed an excellent opportunity for the juniors and seniors to bond. Ignatia,
being the first tournament of the new season, enabled the teams to gel
with each other, ensuring the team spirit to foster further and outper-
form in subsequent tournaments. Despite the current constraints due
to the temporary campus, the teams practiced hard and this achieve-
ment is a testimony to the efforts put by them. IIM Shillong provides
the students full support to pursue their interests and encourages them
to partake in such tournaments.
