Vern Tator’s
Pepper Mills
Vern was born in Con-necticut and grew up racing sailboats on Long Island Sound and skiing in Connecticut and Ver-mont. His first turning experience was in high school during the early 60s. After graduating from the University of Denver he moved to Vail Colorado and taught ski-ing and worked as a carpenter and cabinet maker. He picked up turning in 1973. In 1980 he moved to the San Juan Islands, along with his lathe. After some sailing adventures, he lived in his boat in Friday Harbor for four
(See Vern, p. 3)
The president is still dealing with daughter ill-ness, so A.J. is still doing the President’s duties.
Everyone, we all need to bring bowls for the empty bowls program. Many of you last month picked up roughed out bowls from Vern. Lets get them done and turned in for this worth-while program because our March club meeting is the deadline. Vern also will be demonstrating how to make a pepper mill at our March meeting. Please also do not forget about tops for the Bellevue Arts Museum in July.
Last month’s Saw Dust Session had the second highest attendance that we
have ever had here. I want to thank everyone for coming and hope we can keep up the high at-tendance. There is talk of having a pizza party at the next Saw Dust Session. We will have another wood prep ses-sion in June before sum-mer break. This month’s Saw Dust Ses-sion will be on bowl prep, turning and some coring. A Lathe sign-up sheet will be at the meeting.
We need demon-strators for the Quilceda Carvers Show April 18-19 from 10:00 to 4:00 in Marysville. Contact Mike Hughes at the club meeting.
I encourage all members, new and sea-soned, to come to the board meetings. This is a great way to help guide our club. Not only in the challenges that we face on a month-to-month basis but maybe a new direction that has not been thought if yet.

years and restarted his cabinet shop. He’s added more lathes over the years and now lives in the Maple Leaf neighborhood of Seattle. He’s an active member of the Ameri-can Association of Woodturners, North-west Washington Woodturners, and the Seattle Woodturners. Most of the wood Vern uses comes from downed trees. With the exception of some peppermill and hollow form woods, all of the wood used is locally sourced.
Empty Bowls Needs
This years “return to the community” event will be the Empty Bowls event sponsored by the Ballard Food-bank. This is a great chance to do some good for others. This event sells bowls with soup and bread and the entire in-come goes to purchase food for those who are down on their luck. The idea is, the empty bowl is a symbol of all of the people who cannot afford enough food to eat. This is a great chance to get rid of the bowls that you don't like, don't want and or can't give away. They do not need to be signed, you don't have to like them, they don't even have to be good. I have been to a few of these and have seen beautiful bowls become dog dishes and bowls that I would-n't use as a dog dish become family treasures.
Please support this event. I see this as a payback for all of the free wood that the community gives us during the year.
I will be collecting bowls at the February and March meet-ings. This year’s event will be at the Nordic Heritage Mu-seum in Ballard on March 21st.
REMEMBER THE CLUB ACTIVITY OF MAKING TOPS FOR THE BELLEVUE ART MUSEUM DEMONSTRATIOS IN THE SUMMER
This month I have chosen the Band Saw as the focus for safety. Many of us use the band saw second only to the lathe in our turning. Unfortunately, because the band saw is so easy to use, people can be very negligent when working with it, resulting in many accidents. Notice in the picture the hands are well behind the blade. The hands are NOT in the line of the blade. The operator has the wood on its flat side with a guide firmly attached to the top. Again, no jewelry, loose clothing or long hair is in the way. Finally, you can’t see it, but when the wood runs free of the blade, the operator will ease it out slowly and carefully.
Finally, set it up carefully and completely, according to directions for the specific machine.

Beads of Courage Boxes Still Needed
So far we have about 10 Beads of Courage boxes turned in to Children’s Hospi-tal. They say they can use up to 30 a year, so your work is still needed!
Remember, these kids go through some hellacious tests and procedures. They earn many of these special beads. We need to make them top scale projects. Of great importance also is to be sure your box meets the size requests: 6” diameter and 5” height. You can fudge of these sizes only a little. It has been my experience that I often get a “design opportunity” for many of my turnings. Plan for that.
March 2015 Sawdust Session
We are going to have wood prep for bowls and coring Demo. With reading the wood for proper layout, using chain saws, band saws, and roughing out. You may just come to hang out with the group. Always an exciting time! I hear talk of having a Pizza party during lunch from 12:00 to 1:00PM. Starting this month we will have a sign-up for the lathes at the club meeting. The saw mill is not available during saw dust sessions. Please feel free to set up a time with me if you need something cut.
We need to start stocking up with tops and bowls for empty bowls!!

TIME: 9:00AM-5:00PM (or whenever) LUNCH 12:00-1:00

Dan Johnson and Dan Robbins will be here for mentoring for some of the newer members;
maybe Les will be here too. I also would like to have another mentor or two to help out, the
more the better.
I have my unbreakable tool handles for sale as always. New grips are coming soon!
I hope you can make it!
