unique flavors of Spain. Madrid was once used to fortify a kingdom built by Mohammed the I

since it is a high continental plateau. Now it is home 3.15 million people, and different

nationalities from all around the world. What changed Madrid for the good was the Spanish

Civil war. Since Gen. Franco planned and industrialized Madrid. Now the event that

changed the landscape of Madrid is the construction Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Since

football and the Spanish are inseparable, they built this stadium and continued to expand it

to reach where it is today; a Fifa Elite Stadium. Now the Bernabeu and its area are

surrounded by football bars, housing, and business establishments. So come with me and

let’s explore the truly unique, astounding, cultural centre of Europe; Madrid.

BASIC INFORMATION

Madrid can be found in Spain, it can

also be located in the Southwestern

part of Europe. Madrid is a high

continental plateau, it is also the

highest capital in Europe. Madrid is a

nice city with nice temperatures range

from 15 degrees- 31 degrees Celsius in

Summer, and in Fall in Winter,

temperatures range from 9 degrees to

25 degrees in Fall and Winter. The city

has a moderate population of 3.29

million people. Most people speak

Spanish and Castellano. However, you

may find some Catalan speaking

people, but this may be rare due to the

rivalries of the Madrid and Barcelona

( Home of Catalan’s). Most people in

Madrid are Roman Catholic, but you

may find other people who practicedifferent religions. Usually these people

are immigrants, or they converted.

There are a lot of attractions to see in

Madrid, which range from old palaces

which were turned into museums, to

Home Stadiums of one of the most

prestigious football club’s in the world.

Madrid also has a big shopping

boulevard called the Gran Via. There

are also nice Roman Catholic churches

to see. For the football enthusiast, you

may visit the Santiago Bernabeu

(Santiago Stadium), which is the Home

of Real Madrid F.C. You can also visit

the Vicente Calderon Stadium,

another Home stadium of a Madrid

club called the Athletico Madrid.

Another historic site to visit is the

Palacio Royal. It use to house the King

of Spain, but now King Carlos uses it for

ceremonies. The people in Madrid also

follow a lot of catholic celebrations.

Madrid was already a

pretty wealthy city long

before, because of the

Spanish Empire, and then

the economy boomed

even more after the

Spanish Civil War. The civilwar outburst was caused

due to a rebellion from

General Francisco

Franco, and also due to

unchecked violence in

1936. Gen. Franco, the

Spanish national forces,

Italy, Germany, and

Portugal supported

Gen. Franco’s revolt.

They supported him with

ammunition, troops,

bombs, and tanks.

The last part to the civil

war was in Madrid. After

heavy bombardment

Madrid could hold nolonger, and General

Franco’s troops were

able to come and take

over the city. They

booted out President

Manuel Azana, and

Franco installed himself

as dictator.

After his installment asdictator,

Madrid’s

economy

started to grow

even more.

Franco

planned and

industrialized

Madrid. Due tothat cause,

people from

the rural areas

like Barcelona, Valencia,

Zaragoza etc. moved to

Madrid.

It wasn’t until the 60’s

until Madrid reached its

full potential. From then

the city had modernarchitecture, continuous

flow of tourists, and the

city was growing

wealthier by the day.

Now it is the city with the

highest GDP in Spain. It

also became one of the

most important countries

in Europe because of the

cultural, economic,

industrial, educational

and technological

growth within the last five

decades, because of

Franco’s revolt and

modernization plan of

Madrid. Madrid nowdays hold the, plane,

chemical, electronic

devices,

pharmaceutical,

processed food, printed

materials, and leather

goods industry, all thanks

to the civil war.

Population and Resources in MadridMuhammed I in 852 established the city of Madrid

in order to build a fort. Madrid is located in the middle

of Spain, and is on a high continental plateau, this is

important because high areas such as Madrid are good

for building fortresses. In the later years people from

Tuscany, Italy started to travel to Madrid, and then

when the Roman Empire reached its height, it used

Madrid, in order to defend the Iberian Peninsula. When

the Roman Empire fell, the barbarians (Visigoths) came

and took over Madrid. In the middle of the 20th

century, after the Spanish Civil war, people from the

rural areas of Spain, migrated to the North of Madrid

because of the thriving Middle class communities.

Today, some of the popular jobs in Madrid include,

industrial workers, lawyers, doctors since the following

major industries, such as airplane, leather goods, motor vehicles, electronic devices, pharmaceuticals,

printed materials, chemical industry, are all in Madrid.

Also, Madrid has a set of excellent universities for

students who are willing to go to college in Europe.

People nowadays choose to live in Madrid because

at night it is very calm. People there like to go out and

have a sip at the bar. Also, Madrid has a lot of

affordable luxury villas, nice culture, lots of exciting

sport (soccer, and bullfighting), and admirable art,

architecture, and fashion. Lot’s of students, local and

international, live in the Madrid area because of the

Universities.

Now, the effect of Madrid having many job

opportunities, good schools, and dependable

communities, is he population swelling to 3.15 million

people and counting. There are different nationalities

represented in Madrid, including Catalonians, Spanish,

Portuguese, and American, etc.

WHAT CHANGED THE LANDSCAPE

Football and the Spanish people are inseparable. This article shows you how love for the game offootball changed the landscape of one of themost popular cities in Europe, that is, Madrid. TheSantiago Bernabeu Stadium, which is owned byone of the most successful clubs in Europechanged the face of the city, and became itsemblem. It was built in 1944 during the World War II in the

middle of housing areas in the district ofCharmatin. It was one of biggest then in Europe. It

was known for its unique architecture, which helped make its mark. Itwas inaugurated in the year of 1947, right after World War II. In 1954, Real Madrid Football Clubexpanded it to increase its crowd capacity of 125,000. After 30 years and many Europeanchampionships won by Real Madrid, the stadium was renovated to host the 1982 FIFA WorldCup in Spain. This made the Stadium one of the most famous in Europe. Further renovationwas made in the 1990s to make the stadium safe from violence that frequently erupted duringand after the games at the time of worsening hooliganism in European football.Real Madrid has become the richest soccer club in the world, and further renovated thestadium in 2001 to make it one of the most luxurious stadiums in the world. The stadium isconsidered a five star FiFa elite stadium. The effect of this is that it is surrounded by famoushotels, football bars, and business establishments.

This stadium has seen nine Champions League, and 31 La Liga titles to Real Madrid. It is alsowhere many ferocious battles in European football history had taken place. It has undoubtedlybecome the most significant landmarks in Europe. It is a place where young Madrileños build

their football dreams to hopefully represent and repeat their 2010 World Cup triumph.

!One of the things people didto change Toronto’slandscape is to build the CN

tower. People built the CNtower because theTorontonians had a desire tobuild a large TV and radiocommunication tower. TheCN tower was built back in1976 and before the CNtower was built, the skylinewas mostly small buildingsexcept for some tall officebuildings but when theTorontonians built the CN

tower, the skyline looked

taller and more modern withthe tall building. The CNtower makes Toronto

different today because itmakes Toronto seem modern, because a lot of the moderncities have a lot of tallbuildings and it makes theskyline seem taller. That isone of the things thatchanged Toronto’s landscape.

! Another thing thatchanged Toronto’s landscapeis the sport stadium,

Skydome. The Torontonians

built the Skydome becausethey had a smaller stadiumand they wanted to build abigger stadium to holdbigger events and morepeople. The Skydome wasbuilt in 1988 and when it wasbuilt, it changed thelandscape because theskyline seems more lit up,due to the lights inside thestadium and the spotlightsgoing into the sky at certaintimes. The city’s landscapehad changed due to the

Skydome because it lights up

the city because of thespotlights and the lightsinside the stadium. That isanother way Toronto‘slandscape was changed.

! The city of Toronto was originallyestablished in 1793 and it was named York.In 1834 it was called Toronto. It was foundand established by Governor John GravesSimcoe because he believed it would be agreat location for the capital of UpperCanada and thought the location would beless vulnerable from attack by Americans. Itwas first named York after Prince Fredrick,Duke of York and Albany. The city wasnamed Toronto by the Huron tribe whichmeans “place where trees stand in water”.Toronto is located in Ontario, off the coast of Lake Ontario. Some opportunities in Toronto

are education, housing andjobs. Some resources inToronto are oil, fresh water, sweet water fish andbanking. Some of the majorbusinesses in Toronto arehome depot and universityof Toronto bookstore. It hasexcellent public transportsystem and it is the culturalcapital of English Canada.Because of all these things, the population of Toronto is2,503,281. The nationalitiesin Toronto are English,French, Chinese, Irish,Scottish, Pakistani, SriLankan and Indian. Peoplelive in Toronto because it is

the business and financialcapital of Canada. Those aresome facts about thepopulation and resources of Toronto.

! In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s,

Toronto was an important city. It was a

major banking and marketing center of the

west and it was the center of industry and

transportation in Canada. It also had rich

metal and it was an important railroad

center. When World War 2 occurred some

good things happened. There was a rapid

population increase of people that weremostly European. This happened because

the Europeans wanted to get out of their

country due to World War 2. There was also

an industrial expansion. Because of the

rising population, Toronto created the

Municipality of Metropolitician Toronto

(MMT), and that lead to some important

changed to the city. One important change

that happened is that Toronto built the

world’s 1st computer-controlled traffic

system. That affects life today because if

they didn’t build the MMT, Toronto would

be like a traffic madhouse. Another way it

affects us today is that they built a lot of

houses to hold the growing population, and

if that had not happened, we would have

less houses for the people that live in

Toronto. Another thing that the MMT didfor Toronto is they supplied them with

more water. That affects us today because if

it had not happened, Toronto, in later years,

might be like the Sahara desert. Those are

some things that affect us in the present in

Toronto.

republic, and an oak branch symbolizing the perennity or wisdom.

People in Paris have different religions and beliefs. They are

Christian, Catholic, Roman Catholic, Islam, Jewish and Protestant.

There are no specific costumes in France. Each historical province has their

own. There are different hats, berets or nothing and for the bottom, there are boots, shoes in

leather or in wood. The different holidays/celebrations in France are Christmas, Easter, New

Year, Fete Des Crepe, (Celebration of Crepes) Galette des Rois (A special cake for the Three

Kings) and Poisson d’Avril. (Something to do with April Fool’s Day.)

In Paris there are many interesting things to do and see such as the EiffelTower, Notre Dame, Arc de Triomph, the “Louvre”, Ste-Chapelle, Centre Pompidou,

Seruat, Cezanne, Rodin, and a few others. Living here is a tremendous

experience. Honestly, I have to admit that Paris has the best shopping

experiences anyone could have. They also have food that delights anyone,

with a rich experience once they have a bite, no matter if it’s big or small. The

French dessert that I adore the most is profiteroles because as soon as you plop

them into your mouth, the creamy goodness fills it up and the ice cream adds a

touch of flavour to the melted chocolate as you take each bite making the chocolate taste delicious with the

dessert you are eating. Since, I have been traveling around the world for over 7 years now and my main home is

here, in Paris, I prefer it here than all the other countries I’ve stayed in the past.” -Andrea

wondered of what paradise looks like, then you need to go to Paris. It is located in the

there is delicious! The average temperature of Paris is 12°c. There are 2,193,031

people who live there. Most of them are 15-64 years old. Many of them come from

South Europe, North Africa and Asia; there are lots of different origins, like a glass of

Four Seasons where all the different mixtures are put together in one. There your most

precious dreams will come true. If you were bored on a lovely day, people would

recommend you to go see the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower is opened to

everyone; it has 3 floors and is used as a giant antenna to exchange

wireless signals with the U.S Naval Observatory. (In Arlington, Virginia)

Today the Eiffel Tower is one of the main attractions for tourists and is

still used for radio transmissions. If you would enjoy learning about someof Paris’ history, then go visit the “Champ de Mars”. It is opened to the

public and people go there to relax, have a picnic, jog or spend time there

with friends when there is no work. It is also used sometimes for exhibit

or for concerts. It is a place that people enjoy to go.

A little about Paris’ History

Discover How People Have Changed the Landscape of ParisThese pictures show how people have changed the landscape of Paris. Before, in the

middle age when the Champ de Mars was established by achurch community as a parkland, it served two abbeys thatwere located on the border of Paris. During the 18th century,

the park had been appropriated in the name of the state, forthe purpose of assembling the École Militaire.(Military School)It got its name as a reference from a Roman god of war. Before, in the year 1765, the Champ de Mars was closed to thepublic and only available for military use. The Military schoolwas built for cadet officers from poor families as an academiccollege. Just before the French revolution in 1789, the Champde Mars began opening to the public. Then in 1790, it hadbeen used to celebrate the constitutional monarchy of France. But during the year 1791 the park had been used as a rallying

point when a group of Parisians wanted a petition (A formallydrawn request, often having numerous#names of those making the request, that is addressed to a person or a group of peoplein authority or power) to remove King Louis XVI from theoffice. During that rally many people were massacred since thesoldiers opened fire on the crowd. After that the Champ deMars remained opened to public, and the city of Paris made ita place where people like to go, beautifying the place: theyplanted more trees, and added opened grass. Despite thisdeadly event, people still visit the park and is quite a popular place that tourists go andvisit. One of the major changes of the Champ de Mars was the construction of the Eiffel

Some IMPACTs of the Past on the PRESENT

Paris used to be plain; had no tall monuments, short houses/buildings and didn’thave many tourists. In the late 1800’s Paris was completely renovated. Under NapoleonIII, Baron Haussman made a plan to beautify the city by repainting shabby hovels andhacks making them into shimmering 6 and 7 story high, white stone buildings. He

made big parks with beautiful green lawns, with nothing interfering with its view. After

hat, Paris had become a classy center for arts and cultures. Some of Paris’ scenes havebeen immortalized by works of painters, meaning they made them immortal, living forever; never dying, and remembered forever. Then everything changed when theEiffel Tower was built. It was built for the World Exhibition in 1889, but a lot of the Parisians complainedabout the monument. Some said it was too high and that it created a big shadow over the houses andbuildings. It was actually the world’s tallest building from 1889 to 1930! It is the world’s most visited paidmonument and the tallest building in France .The Eiffel Tower was only meant to stay for the duration of he World Exhibition, but Gustave Eiffel (the creator) spent a lot of money to build that monument and leftt. The Eiffel Tower was built on March 31st 1889, and took 26 months to complete. It took about 18,000

parts. There were 3,000 workshop drawings; they had 700 engineering plans, and 2,500,000 rivets to raise

his monument. It weighs 7,300 tons and it measures 1,050 feet long! Since the Eiffel Tower becameopened to everyone, tourists began to come. France was making money and the Eiffel Tower became avery famous landmark. On the 20th of November 1913, the Eiffel Tower was used as a giant antenna toexchange wireless signals with the U.S Naval Observatory. (In Arlington, Virginia) Today the Eiffel Towers one of the main attractions for tourists and is still used for radio transmissions. Imagine Paris without the

Eiffel Tower! There would be fewer tourists since; there would be less to see.

Dubai used to depend on gold and

pearls for money. It was a successful portcity by the early years of the 20th century

full of ships and a souk (market in Arabic)full of merchants and shops. They started

to explore for oil and in 1966 theydiscovered oil in the area. They decided to

export the oil for money and they wereable to build more and more buildings.

Today, Dubai is a major exporter of oil.Dubai is producing 240,000 barrels a day.

In ranking, it makes the third most oilproducer in West Asia ranking below Iran

and Saudi Arabia. In the world, it is ranked

as the sixth largest producer of oil. Withthe money from exporting oil, the growthof the city is multiplying and many grand

developments are being built like the BurjKhalifa which is the tallest building in the

world, the Jebel Ali Palm Island which is

made entirely of dug out sand from theocean and can support buildings and

houses, an indoor ski slope in the middleof the hot scorching

desert and a five star deluxe hotel called the

Burj al-Arab. Dubai hasa GDP per capita of US

$36,175.966 and wasranked as the fifth

richest country in 2008.That is how the

discovery of oil affected

the Dubai today.

The PAST and the PRESENT

DUBAI

Resources and the PeopleThe city of Dubai was established 224 AD when the Sassanids occupied the area.Since it was located near the sea, it was used as a trading post later on in the 7thcentury. In 1894, Sheik Maktoum bin Hasher al-Maktoum declared a tax exemption

for foreign traders which made people flock to the area.Today, oil is extracted after the discovery of oil in 1966 which can be sold for a

massive amount of money. In Dubai, their major industries are construction,

engineering and the extraction of oil and gas. People come here because it is a safe

place because the government implies strict consequences for committing crimes and

there is no income tax.

The population of Dubai today is 1.3 million which represents: 17% Emirati, 9.1% other Arab

countries, 42.3% Indian, 13.3% Pakistani, 7.5% Bangladeshi, 2.5% Filipino, 0.9% European, 0.3%

American and 5.7% other countries. It’s like one flavorful cake!

This is how people inDubai have changed the

landscape. In the year of 2000, there were no artificial

islands. Then by 2002, they

started to make artificial

islands. They made theseartificial islands by collecting

sand from the ocean andpilling it all in an area using a

hose. It makes an arc when it

sprays over the specified areaand it looks like a rainbow.

They finished one islandnamed ‘Palm Jumeirah’ in

2007. They did this because

they want people to buyproperty on the island. The

developer of these islands isgovernment owned so when

people buy property on the

islands, the money goes to the

government. Today, becauseof this, it is an icon of the city

because these islands arefamous around the world for

its shape and tourists go to the

islands which is an opportunityto make money which is why

many companies flock

here.

Burj al-Arab is a classy and luxurious hotel which was rated as

a ‘5-star deluxe’ hotel but when a British journalist came, she

This paragraph will tell you about how

people have changed the landscape of Seoul. Before, in the year of 1969, Seoul was like a very undeveloped city with not a lot of businesses, small buildings, still farming,

and the buildings were built sidewaysbecause they had enough land becausebefore Seoul didn’t have a lot

businesses, so they didn’t needed a lotof buildings. Then, around the year 1975,

people in Seoul changed the landscape by constructing gov ernment buildings, and business

buildings and the people in Seoul w as forced to build these buildingsbecause in that time Seoul was being controlled by the Japanese. Today, because of

this change, the city of Seoul is now like Singa pore or United States because of all thebusiness buildings that made the economy go up. People say that Seoul is one of thebiggest cities which is full of business buildings.

IMPACT OF THE PAST AND THE PRESENT

This paragraph will tell you some in-

formation about the impact of the past on the

present. Seoul used to be a not fully formed

country with low technology and had no

power, so it was conquered by Japan. It had

a lot of resources for instance, wheat.

Seoul became allies with America

because of the Korean War (June 25, 1950

to July 27 1953) as a result, Seoul became

the capital city of Korea. .U.N made an

agreement with Seoul that America will sup-

port Seoul, but Seoul can’t make weapons

without their permission, so as a result, Seoul

got a lot of help from America and the U.N.

Seoul was part of the Korean War, so

the buildings were destroyed. Seoul rebuilt a

lot of new buildings and persuaded other coun-

tries to make business in Seoul. Seoul tried to

make new businesses for instance LG and

Samsung. Seoul also made more places for the

tourists to visit.

Seoul is now a developed city with a lot

of buildings. The working city Seoul has a

popu-

lation of 10.7 million peo-

ple. It’s full of business

buildings. It has a lot of Land-

marks to visit. Seoul is restless because even at

night or midnight the buildings are ongoing

and

the stores are mostly 24 hours because if the

business people work until midnights than

they will have to eat at midnight, so the stores

have to be open and that’s why the stores are

all opened even a midnight.. Today, because of

all the things that was done in the past Seoul is

now an industrial city. Even though Seoul is

one of the wealthiest cities in Asia, it’s still

trying to develop more.

Have you been to Hokkaido? If you haven’t, then I can teach you about Hokkaido. Hokkaido is

the sea. It means Hokkaido has lots of seafood, so many people can eat lots of seafood, and it

famous in Hokkaido, too. After the war, people began to build much more buildings, tall buildings,

and other structures. By the many more buildings, the Sapporo got many famous places than

before they change Sapporo city, so Sapporo changed their images. It means that the Sapporo

become much more commercials city, by they got many more buildings. Meiji’s government have

came to Hokkaido, and they started develop Sapporo in Hokkaido. And Hokkaido is still

developing, and it will continue to develop by the people. So if you have been or visited there in

the past, then you can go and see how Sapporo changed, and there will be more new things, too.

And if you wanted to know some things about Sapporo, then I think maybe you can go to

Sapporo and look some other things what I share with you by your eyes, so that you can

understand more things about Sapporo in Hokkaido.

I asked my father and my friend about Sapporo in Hokkaido. My friend said

she enjoy going to Asahiyama Zoo in Sapporo because she likes to see the

seals. She also went to a hiking park where people can see animals walking

around the forest and a waterfall. On the top of hill, there is an observatory

where people can view sceneries and different sights.

I asked my father has been Sapporo also. He said there were many kinds of

food. For example beans sprout, noodle soup, seafood, Genghis Khan, sea

urchin, salmon roe, herring, and kelp. Small red beans, milk, cheese, white

chocolate, corn and rice are also popular in Hokkaido.

So they said Sapporo is a good place to go. And there are many people living in Sapporo, but not as crowed as Tokyo.

Hokkaido used to be a mean city because in the old time, when

the Russian and other international people came to Hokkaido for

they to talk about their future and trade their things, but theyweren’t admitted to enter because of Hokkaido’s policy. So

Sapporo missed to talk with them about the future. But Meiji’s

government starts to develop Sapporo in Hokkaido. Then many

things were changed. Then the people found there are many

natural resources in Sapporo. For example irons, and steels. People

started to work in coal mining, and paper manufacturing. After

World War II, Hokkaido’s economy developed very well, and

Hokkaido founded huge natural resources than before, too. As a

result, the city of Sapporo is now developed more than before

Meiji’s government come to Sapporo and develop Sapporo. And people made new roads, new airports,

and new harbors. Hokkaido is still developing, and it will continue to develop by the people. So if you goto the Hokkaido, then you can see changes of Sapporo. And if you have been Sapporo or visited Sapporo,

then you can see the change of there and maybe you can describe the changes.

History of Sapporo

I’m going to write about Sapporo in Hokkaido. It is a city found in the

northernmost part of Japan. The population of Sapporo as of 2010 was 1,896,207, and most of the people speak Japanese,

but many people in Sapporo are Ainu. People there believe in

Buddhism, Shinto, and Christianity which was introduced by

William Smith Clark. Sapporo has many greens. For example

river, and forests. The average temperature of Sapporo is 8.5

degrees in each year. There are four seasons in Sapporo,

which are spring, summer, fall, and winter. During winter,

Sapporo gets a lot of snows, so the winters are very cold, long,

and harsh. Sapporo has many famous festivals, but the most

popular festival is the Sapporo Snow Festivals which happens

at beginning of February each year. The main attractions inthis festival are snow sculptures like palaces, giant pyramids which are made by ice,

and some Japanese cartoon characters which are made by ice. Other

famous festivals in Sapporo are the Lilac Festivals in May, the

Yosakoi-Soran festivals in the beginning of June, and the Clock

Tower Festivals in middle of September. I tell you what is Clock

Tower. Clock Tower is the tower with the Clock. It so simple!!

There are also famous landmarks in Sapporo, like the Sky

Resorts, the Clock Tower, and the Agency of Hokkaido. The famous

foods in Sapporo are melon, salmon and some seafood, rice. And milk. Sapporo is

also famous for bears, cows, and horses. So I will tell you that Sapporo is a goodplace to go for people who likes snow or who likes to play with snow because

Sapporo has most long winter each year than some other city in Japan. So they can

Resources in Sapporo

I’m going to write about the changing landscape of Avenue Park in

Sapporo city in Hokkaido. Avenue Park was constructed in 1912 and it was

renovated in 1926 and 1989. The first time, Avenue Park only has small buildings,

not much green gardens, and it was a residential place. Then they began to build

much more buildings, tall buildings, and other structures. Because they wanted it to

become a commercial area, so that they thought there will be more people. But many

buildings which were built in 1926 are not here in Avenue Park anymore. There are

much more structures, for example, a fountain, more plants, more trees, more tall

buildings and more new buildings, more people, and a tower. There are many new

buildings. And there is many buildings for the commercial and more buildings for the business. They

changed their landscapes because the buildings were very old for that time and they wanted Avenue Park

to have a new image or to become popular places. Today Avenue Park is totally different than before they

change Avenue Park. Because today’s Avenue Park got more buildings or more new things, and it shows

how Sapporo city has changed by 1926 and 2011. And if you have been to the Avenue Park before it

changes, then you can go and see ow Avenue Park changed in the years.

My city is Hokkaido. People start making Hokkaido at 1950. Hokkaido is located near the sea, and it is

important because Hokkaido has a lot of food that are can get from the sea. It means Hokkaido has a

lot of kind of foods that are seafood. People came to Hokkaido in the past because they wanted to talk

with them about their future or what they are going to do for help the country at the Hokkaido. Some

good things in Sapporo are that the economy is very high, and the government is very good and nice.

Hokkaido has many different kinds of resources. For example the clock tower,

marimo, salmon, scallop, Ainu, and some other things. Hokkaido’s businesses are

basically about environment. And they have some other

businesses. For example work at the ranch, farming, work for

sightseeing, and fisherman. 5,521,534 people are living in the

Hokkaido and there are many Ainu people. This was known

by 30, September. 2010. Hokkaido has to have good manners.Hokkaido’s nationality is the constitutional monarchy. And

Hokkaido’s governor is Harumi Takahasi. Harumi Takahasi is

helping Hokkaido to develop well, controlling Sapporo, and

saving Hokkaido. So the people who are living in the

Hokkaido can live happily, and it will be affect for the people

who will come to the Sapporo or visit to the Sapporo in the

! Hi everybody, my name is Leamas Grant, andI am one of the lucky citizens of London here to sharean experience of mine with you about London. Thissubject was too elementary for anybody! Let me dothe honor of telling you the time I moved here.Straight from the airport I wanted to explore the soonto be my permanent home. With my brother Charles,we took a taxi cab to the London Eye, for he was just

begging me to go there the entire plane ride. At theLondon Eye, I have to tell you, my brother did not exaggerate when he told me that I would be amazed by the beautiful view. After that, we ate a scrumptiousLondon delight, which were fish and chips. The foodwas so tasty that if we left it alone all the ants in theworld would fight over just a bite of the meal! Iordered that about three times. Back to theadventuring, Charles agreed to visit one of Europe’sproudest collections of sea life, The LondonAquarium. The London Aquarium was just

bewildering and bursting with beauty! We decided togo to the indoor SEGA theme park, which by the way,is the largest one in the world! That place was pretty chaotic, but that was part of the fun! Could you imagine a Sonic the Hedgehog roller coaster?Because I could not believe my eyes! At the end of theday, we checked into the hotel even though we did not eat dinner, because the lunch still made us feel like a pig stuffed with delicacies. Quoting Frank West,“London is like a diamond in the brightest light… it shines so brightly and is a very valuable jewel. If you get lucky and find a diamond, you are not as lucky asliving in London.” How lucky I was to be relocated toLondon.

Enter the amazing world of London!

If you are planning to go on a vacation or

move permanently, London is the place for you.

he population is 7,122,200 from 1997. London is

ocated in the U.K, which is located on the northwest part of Europe. The temperature is a nice five

entigrade during January and a pleasant eighteen

entigrade during summer in July. London is not

mountainous and only has hills on the border of the

ity. Having 34 bridges, that makes it obvious that

here is huge river in the city called the Thames

River. London is the smallest city in the U.K,

ecause it is only 1,572 square kilometers and is

bout 0.65% of the space in the U.K. That is pretty

mpressive considering it is the capital of Northern

reland, U.K and Great Britain. Like a bee, London

s small and successful.

n London there are amazing Landmarks, like the

ondon Bridge which was rebuilt in the year of

209. It is the oldest bridge in the U.K. When it

was rebuilt, people added homes and stores next to

he bridge. London can also show off its

uckingham Palace, the home of the royal family.

was built in 1705 by the Duke of Buckingham,

hen housed George III, and at 1837 belonged to

Queen Victoria. During summer 18 out of 600ooms are available to the public. Also, taking 36

ears to make, to build from 1675 to 1711, St.

aul’s Cathedral was rebuilt by after the Great Fire

y Sir Christopher Wren. It has a unique dome.

ondon is symbolized by a very familiar attraction,

he London Eye. It is the tallest wheel in the world

hat lets you watch over the beautiful city 135

meters above the ground. The London Eye has

ecome an icon, because it is the most popular in

erms of attractions, as it also is the highest earning.

10,000 people go there in one day, so that makes

over 3.5 million people going there each year. Did I

also mention a gallery called The Nation Gallery? It

contains paintings of the famous artists likeMichelangelo, and even Leonardo Da Vinci’s oldest

works of art. This museum on Trafalgar square has

more than 2,200 paintings from internationally

known famous artists.

I should speak about the people too. Their official

language is English. Most people in London are

Christians, some are Catholic. People from

Bangladesh and Pakistan usually belong to the

Islamic community. Indians believe in Hinduism,

and there are also some Jewish people from the 19th

century who were refugees from Russia. Traditions

and customs that Londoners celebrate is the Notting

Hill Carnival where there are floats and children

dress up in costumes. This goes on for three days.

Fall and Spring have the same tradition which is

celebrated twice a year; Fashion Week! This is

where people show the clothes and work of world

famous clothes designers. There is also an event on

the last Sunday of January, where people dress up

in clothes from the 17th century as they remember

the passing away of Charles I. As for theircelebrated holidays, there is obviously Christmas.

There is also Boxing Day on the 26th of December

where bosses give employees clothing, money, and

food, which is also the start of Christmas sales.

They also play sports like hunting foxes on Boxing

Day. If you read further on, you will see that

London is actually a very interesting city.

London Eye has a large source of income and is a must see for the

people on vacation. Though the line is long, the time that you are in

a capsule which is completely safe will make you feel that is was

worth the wait. The London Eye gives you the chance to peer over

the city and its wonders like you were an eagle soaring in the sky.

! Things through

history have altered things

in the present, but

numerous things have

changed since the GreatFire. London in the year of

1666 was crawling with

diseased rats which had the

disease known as “Black

Death” or the bubonic

plague. The context of the

situation was having most

of the houses being

wooden, and things like

oil, hemp, hay and more

flammables were contained

in some of the houses in

Thames Street. On top of

that, the method of killing

a fire back then was not so

efficient. That was great for

a fire to start.

In 1666, the cause of many

changes was The Great

Blaze. A fire started in a

bakeshop for the king, andit spread in the middle of

the night. The fire was hard

to stop because of all the

wood and flammables, so

the massive flame

continued on unpityingly.

The fire went on for about

three days, which is a long

time. When the fire died,

London was surprised at

what happened to their

beautiful city.

At the end, there were

many awful things that

happened. The aftermath of

the fire was 13,000 houses

burnt down, 89 churches

had been destroyed, and 52

guild halls did not survive

the fire. The fire was very

merciless because it lookedlike someone dropped a big

bomb on London. Lots of

people were poor and

homeless since their shelter

was burnt down. Because

of the fire, 80% of London

was ruined.

Unlike the unfortunate

effects of the fire, thedecent effects lingered on

all the way to the present

day. London learned a

lesson to not use too many

wood structures, and that

event also greatly

improved efficiency of

the fire fighters. As a

matter of fact, another

good thing the fire was

kill many of the rats

carrying the plague,

reducing the disease of

“Black Death”, saving

many more lives to

come. Also, the

representatives of

architecture and

government were happy

about the fire, thinking

the tragedy as anotherpositive thing for London.

Since 80% of London was

wiped out, they viewed it

as a good opportunity to

rebuild the buildings that

were there to make it even

better. They basically

rebuilt London to an even

better London then the one

in 1665. A good example

of that statement would

be the St. Paul’s

Cathedral London has

today. Their

architecture is now a

good path to retrace

London’s long and

interesting history to give it

a unique tone and more

tourists. If you want to

awesome and cool castles

it has to offer.

Humans have changed thelandscape of London very impressively. A very great example of that statement wouldbe the major economic centerthat London is proud to calltheir own, Canary Wharf. If you look closely at the old Canary Wharf, you can see on thebuilding, it says “Canary Wharf”. Now, if you do not recognize it, the tall building inthe middle of the modern

roots on commercial andindustry related things, and toh a v e a g o o d l o o k i n g surrounding of London. Sincethey had to fulfill their job, they decided to turn the old and dirty looking, flat landed, with littleactivity, Canary Wharf into oneof the most massive economicpowerhouses in the world.When they gradually started tob u i l d i n t h e 8 0 ’ s t h e

government produced a very urban icon, which would beextremely wealthy, and isprobably a huge part of London’s economy. The picturetells about everything I will tellyou.

! From a very smallnumber, they now have over15,000 people employed there. From a flat landscape, Canary Wharf was transformed into a

landscape of high rise andbustling with activity. Just look a t t h e p i c t u r e . A l m o s t  everything there is lit up. Thereare tal l bui l dings, cars, everything! It is like a flowerwhich’s life stages has beenreversed, because first it wasdull and wilted, whereas now, it is in full bloom, looking asbeautiful as ever. Transforming

this place may be one of the best choices the government chose. If you are looking for goodbusiness, that modern, stylishhigh rise of London is the placefor you to go.

Another Experience :! “I remember my experience in Hanoi. It was great, the people, culture and of course food. I love

the food there, especially the symbol of the city, Vietnamese Rice Noodles (Pho). The spring rolls are

excellent, made of fresh vegetables and meat, the true Vietnamese taste. People

say that Vietnam has the best quality bread. I agree, I remember tasting the

delicious ingredients mixed with the rich texture of the bread. The bread was

crunchy and cooked well; it was the best bread I have ever tasted. I alsoremember going to a great place known as the Old Quarter where there were

many street stalls selling a variety of things, toys, food, clothes, souvenirs, plates

and many other things. I bought unique and hand made silk scarves, and was

amazed at how fine and beautiful there were. I bought many souvenirs that

resemble Hanoi and Vietnam as well. I was walking down the small pavement

where something caught my eye, it was the extraordinary, hand made, unique

and elegant traditional Vietnamese dress ( Ao Tai). I bought one immediately

and took in the dazzling patters and designs. I continued my journey by going

to the Water Puppets show which was much better than I expected. I love

Hanoi and I know that I had a great time there.”

Vietnam is in South Asia, facing the South China Sea. The Capital of Vietnam is Hanoi.

Hanoi is located in the North, near the Chinese border, and is about 200 km far from the coast.

Hanoi is built on flat, fertile soil land with the Red River flowing around it. The mountain

range is to the north of Hanoi

Hanoi is in the temperate climate zone with four seasons. It has a very distinct winter and summer season. During the hot summer months, temperatures can reach above 40

degrees Celsius and it can be dusty. During the winter months, temperatures can be as low as

6-7 degrees Celsius.

Buddhism has been the official religion of Vietnam since the year of 1100. However,

Vietnam is now the home of Catholics and Muslims as well. The national language is Vietnamese

but German, Russian, French and English are also spoken by some of the 6 million people

leaving in Hanoi.

The symbol of Hanoi is Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as the lake of the restored sword.Legend says that a commoner once found a sword there, Using the sword, King Le Loi also

known as Le Thai To, founder of Le dynasty defeated the Northern Ming Aggressors in 15

centuries. After his victory, the king returned the word to the Golden Turtle in the lake.

The holidays and festivals celebrated in Vietnam are : Lunar New Year ( Tet) , Trung Thu

(Mid Autumn Festivals) , Phong Sinh ( celebration of Buddha’s Birth), Lac Long Quan ( Hung

King Temple Festival), Liberation Day, Ho Chi Minh’s Death Anniversary, Labor day, Tet Trung

Why Did People Go To

Hanoi

Hanoi is in Vietnam with the Red River

flowing around it only 85 miles away from the South China Sea.

! Hanoi was established by the

Emperor Ly Thai Tho in 1010 AD. At that

time, Ly Thai Tho made Hanoi into the

capital.

! There are many opportunities

in Hanoi mostly provided by the Red

River. The Red River allowed Hanoi to

have flat fertile land which has excellentquality for rice growing, a daily product

eaten by Vietnamese. The traditional rice

growing has helped Vietnamese by giving

them food, jobs and money, earned from

selling rice. The Red River was also used

for shipping, transport and fishing. 92 %

of Vietnam’s exports are marine life.

Water was another resource provided

from the Red River. Therefore, the Red

River has been an important part of

Vietnam as well as Hanoi. Hanoi is also a

great place for education. People say that

Hanoi is the centre of education in

Vietnam. Hanoi has many excellent

universities with high standards of

learning. Students move to Hanoi

because it is the best place for education

and more educated people, means more

business more Hanoi. Hanoi’s schoolsalso give the best opportunity to

succeed in finding a suitable career.

People also go there because of the

location, it is close to water, meaning

more jobs and food and better chance in

planting. People also go there to relocate

business, as Hanoi is becoming the place

for business and companies, that why

recently, major companies are relocating

there.

! Hanoi is easily accessed and has

many twin cities like Russia, Korea, China

and many more.

! There many industries and

businesses in Hanoi such as Canon,

Honda, Electric and Electronic industries,

Silk Scarf, PetroVietnam and Beer

companies.

! In 2010, Hanoi had a great

population of 6,232940 people. Vietnam

had a population of 87,375,000, making it

the 13th most populated country in the

world.

! The main nationality is

Vietnamese and the Religions are Roman

Catholic and Buddhism. The main

language spoken in Hanoi is Vietnamese,

but French, Russian, German and English

are also spoken in Hanoi by older

citizens. French is spoken because of the

influence left behind by the French, after

and during the First Indochina War.

German and Russian are spoken because

of business and connections. Russian was

spoken because it was part of the First

Indochina war, interacting with Vietnam.English is now a language that is learnt in

most schools in Hanoi.

! Hanoi has many opportunities

and is much like Paris, a mix of the old

and the new.

Learn About The Past

Hanoi used to be a city of bikes. People

would sell fruits in baskets while walkingor cycling to earn money. Citizens were

very close and fr iendly. Neighbors would

know each other very well and be close

friends, inviting them over to each other’s

houses. The citizens of Hanoi are like a

great big family.

During the time of December 19, 1946

– August 1, 1954, the First Indochina War

took place. This was between the French

Union’s French Far East Expeditionary

Corps, which was led by France and also

supported by Emperor Bao Dai’s

Vietnamese National Army against the

Viet Minh, which was led by Ho Chi

Minh and Vo Nguyen Giap.

The reason for this war was because

Vietnam was seeking their independence

from France and also to oppose the

Japanese occupation. France demanded

the Vietnamese to surrender and pass

the Hanoi forces to them, allowing the

French to have the responsibility,

however, Vietnam declined and

responded by attacking the French

electric plant and other installations. This

caused the French to seize Gia Lam

airfield, taking control of the central par tof Hanoi and other Provinces.

This resulted in the death of 10% of

Vietnam’s population. It also had many

positive effects on Hanoi, one of them

being the change in Hanoi’s culture. The

French culture influenced the culture of

Vietnam. Citizens also learnt to bake

pastries and bread. Bakeries were then

built as people started to sell their bread

for money. This helped the economy as

some people say that Vietnam has the

best quality bread.

Another effect is the architecture as

some French buildings were left behind,

catholic buildings and churches were also

built and left behind. These buildings and

churches helped Vietnam and Hanoi gain

lots of money as they became famous

tourist attractions.

As you can see, the First Indochina War

had a great effect on the present Hanoi.

Hanoi, a mix of old and new.

! These pictures show how

people have changed the landscape of

Hanoi. Before, when Hanoi was very

peaceful, it was a city full of nature,

much like a huge forest. They had

many healthy trees and plants that

made Hanoi a clean and unpolluted

city. At that time, there were no

apartments, only small buildings that

were three stories high. Each little

building would have up to 20 rooms.

The rooms were like miniature

houses. They were old fashion and

eco- friendly. Hoan Kiem lake was the

Pearl of Hanoi, and it was clean and a

beautiful natural eco-system. It would

be refreshing to take a walk and

observe nature. After a few decades,

humans changed the landscape by

cutting down trees, polluting natural

eco-systems, war and also building

projects. They did this because they

needed money, space and land. War

started because of several things, one

of the most important ones is the

First Indochina War. Vietnam was

seeking for independence, the war

affected Hanoi dramatically. This war

destroyed the city but left some

French influence behind. From looking

at the two pictures, you can see that

on one picture, the background behind

the structure is trees with an old

structure behind. On the second one,

you can easily see the buildings

proving that Hanoi did change by

constructing buildings. The

constructions used trees, money and

also the demolishment of old

apartments. However, the money was

needed. Space and land was needed to

build tall apartments, to fit more

people which meant more money.

Money was used to develop the city

even further making it the city it is

today. Today, because of the change,

Hanoi is now like a developed and

modern city but still leaving a bit of the past.

Hong Kong B Noah

Hong Kong is a unique city because of the fact that it has

seamlessly blended Chinese and European cultures. This

started in 1644 when the British decided they wanted to have

an area near China so they could trade with the Chinese. The

British left Hong Kong in 1997, and made a permanent

imprint on the Hong Kong people. This is shown by the fact

that the people of Hong Kong enjoy watching horse races,

hang out in clubs, and eat international food.

An example of Hong Kong’s improvement is the Peninsula

Hotel. In 1928, The Peninsula Hotel was created near the port

so that there is a luxurious place for rich people to stay in once

they arrived through ocean liners. Today, it has changed andyou can easily notice the difference from what it was and what

it is now. A large improvement between the old and the new is

that there is a tall 30-storey back tower built into the rear of

The Peninsula, giving it more accommodation for guests and

its distinctive “throne” shape.

In this introduction, I have given you a little bit of

information about what there is to find in this small city. As I

am sure that you want to learn more about this colorful place,

go on and keep reading this piece that shows the wonders of

Peninsula Hotel 1928

Hong Kong’s Changing

Landscape

The Peninsula Hotel is an

example of what people have

changed in the landscape of Hong

Kong. When it was opened in the year

1928, the Peninsula, founded by the

Kadoorie family, was a place that was

created near the port so rich visitors

would have a luxurious place to stay

in once they arrived through ocean

liners. It also plays a large part in

Hong Kong’s history because, when

the Japanese conquered Hong Kong,

the highest Japanese officers stayed inthe Peninsula Hotel.

In 1994, people changed the

landscape of this area by building a

tall tower in the back of the

Peninsula, thus expanding it. This was

done to have more space for guests.

The hotel has also been in a few

movies.

Also, as you can see in the old

image, there was nothing across the

Peninsula building. If you visit the

hotel today, you will see a large

planetarium that was built across it in

1973. Because of this change, the city

of Hong Kong, or this area

of it at least, is much more attractive.

Peninsula hotel now

The People of Hong Kong

Hong Kong, as a city, began in around mid-1600. It was turned from a

countryside province or merchant village into a bustling metropolis by the British.

It is located on the coast of China, which was vital to its development, due to the

fact that it could become a port or a fishing area. People only went there in larger

numbers after the British arrived to join them in the trades and work with them.

Hong Kong today is a successful city. There are several job opportunities provided

in this city, including mining, banking, teaching etc. In Hong Kong, the resources

are fishing, the mines and the trade that come into ports. It is a nice place to live

and be in today because of the improvements the British made in their 353 year

rule. When the British arrived, they gave Hong Kong access to the latest

machinery, technology, and more. Some of the largest companies in Hong Kong

in 2010 include China Mobile (Hong Kong) Limited, Hutchison Whampoa, Dairy

Farm International Holdings,!Yue Yuen,!Hang Seng Bank,!Cathay Pacific Airways

and Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC). The place is also

very modern with good mass transport and communication systems.

There are about 7,089,705 people in Hong Kong in July 2010. The country has

not, however, attracted people from all over the world. The population of Hong

Kong is mostly Chinese, with about 95% being local. Other than that, 1.6% is

Filipino, 1.3% Indonesian, and the rest comprise the different nationalities. The

people in Hong Kong also speak multiple languages, mostly Chinese dialects: 91%

Cantonese, 3% English, 1% Mandarin Chinese, 4% other Chinese dialects, andthe last 1% from other languages.

The Hong Kong Chinese are unique than other Asian areas because they were

colonized by the British. Local folks like to watch horse races, hang-out in clubs,

and eat international food. The people here also have a generally higher level of

living and are always on the go. But they also relax on weekends to reduce stress.

This map shows the entire Hong Kong, and clearly identifies the different parts with

multiple colors. You can also see the multiple places of interest for tourists on it.

The Basics of Shanghai

Shanghai is located in a

country called China.

They Area or region is inAsia. The population

of this country is 19

million residents in

Shanghai (In 2010).

Shanghai is located

on the east tip of

Yangtze River Delta

and halfway along

China’s eastern

coastline. The climate

in Shanghai is around

18oC. It is shivering

in midwinter. Theyspeak Shanghainese

variety. Shanghai’s

religion people go to the

Jade Buddha Temple.

There predominant

religion is Buddhism.

There are 140,000

Catholics in Shanghai.

The traditional costumes

they wear are called

pien-fu (ceremonial

costume). I am going to

share two specialholidays in Shanghai.

The first one is

Shanghai

This is about old

Shanghai when was

Shanghai made? Why do

people from other

countries come to

Shanghai? Well I can Ianswer that! The Yuan

imperial government

created Shanghai. In

1915 The British had war

with Shanghai so they

had to trade stuff for

money and resources.

Shanghai is in Shanghai

and this is important to

shanghai because needslots and lots of recourses

and money to survive!

In Shanghai there are

opportunities in this city

because Shanghai lives

next to sea water so

they are very lucky that

they have an important

resource. So people

need lots and lots of water because there are

300,000 foreigners in

Shanghai. Shanghai

spends 350 billion Yuan

on six pillar industries

over the next 5 tears.

People sell technology,

automobiles, electrical

and mechanicalproducts in Shanghai

so maybe that’s why

Shanghai is so wealthy!

There are over 10 million

residents in Shanghai

which is 25% Koreans,

15% Taiwanese and 25%

others!

Shanghai’s impact of the past on the present

I was researching about Shanghai and I am going to share theimpact of the past on the present in Shanghai. Here are somefacts. Shanghai used to be called “Shen” After local Bamboofishing trap. Shanghai is China’s largest and greatest city!!!Jiang Zemin is the guy who came to power in Shanghai in1992. He is also the premier of Zhu Rongji.

Jiang Zemin change the cit Shanghai what he did is made thetaxes lower, made a rule that the size of a family that comes toShanghai has to be fewer than three people but that s toosmall for me! And he made Shanghai bigger than before! Sohe did make an impact of the past on the present. So rightnow Shanghai must still be big and because of him the city

Shanghai hAright now must still be big! Shanghai is

more unique, beautiful, colorful and bigger.

! Kyoto is a very historical

place with many ancient, old temples

and buildings that are still seen today.World War II was going to change

how everything was in Kyoto today.

At the end of World War II, the U.S

was planning to hit Kyoto with an

atomic bomb, because it was “The

Center of Japan”. When this was

going to happen, a man named Henry

L. Stimson chose not to hit Kyoto

with the atomic bomb and took

Kyoto off the targeting list. He did

this because he believed Kyoto

shouldn’t be bombed due to its

culture and political importance. This

has affected Kyoto today, because the

reason why Kyoto has old buildingsand temples is because there was no

bombing that destroyed all the

historical and ancient buildings and

temples in Kyoto. These old buildings

and temples have become tourist

attractions, gaining money for the

city. Although Kyoto has also been

affected by other wars, they were

able to rebuild what was destroyed,

so they are able to have these things

they have today.

The Impact from the Past to Present...

ANCIENT TEMPLES AND

SHRI NES SEEN TODAY

! These pictures show how

people have changed the landscapeof the Shijo Ohashi (Shijo GreatBridge) in Kyoto. The first ever ShijoOhashi was built in 1142. It wasn’tsuch a gigantic bridge, it was actuallyquite small, so it wasn’t actuallycalled an Ohashi. It was surroundedby bits of water in different areas.Behind the bridge was a town withhouses and short buildings andbehind the buildings and houseswere a few mountains. It also wasn’tas crowded and wasn’t filled with alot of people. Although it was quitesmall this bridge played an importantrole, because it allowed both theGion procession and pilgrims tocross the Kamogawa River. Then acouple of centuries later, in 1857, thefirst real Shijo Ohashi was built. Ithad a couple of changes since 1142,like how the Shijo Ohashi was muchbigger than it was last time, but stillwasn’t as crowded. It also wasn’t asstable as it could’ve been, because itwas a wooden bridge on stonepillars. It looked some what the

same and still had the same style of buildings behind the bridge. Theyagain built a new bridge in 1874,because it was washed away in aflood by the Kamogawa River. This

time the bridge was made of iron

and had 4 lamps on each side. It stilllooked the same as the other twobridges but looked a bit sturdier. Thebuildings still looked the same butthey got rid of other oldconstruction. Then, around the year1913, they again rebuilt the bridgefor it to be wider and have a largeramount of space. It was made out of concrete and had an arched design. The design they made took a loteffort and took some time. Butagain, during a flood in 1935,driftwood got stuck in the archeswhich made the flood destroy manybuildings in some nearby areas. So in1942, they again built a new bridge.Humans changed the landscape byadding more water that surroundingthe bridge, and adding morebuildings. It was much morecrowded and looked more stable. Itis also a bridge that’s still standingtoday. Also today, because of thischange, the city of Kyoto is nowlooking like a modern city becauseof this bridge. They have had so

many experiences and toughchallenges they had to go throughwith and it was worth it. As Kyoto isa historical and wonderful city.

BOGOTABy: Santi

You might have been to ECUADOR or VENEZUELA or even BRAZIL but you

don’t know the best things of South America if you haven’t been to Bogota the

biggest city of Colombia and the most modern city in Latin America. The

Spanish people arrived in 1499 and created an establishment which in 1886 it

was turned into a city named Bogota, Capital of the Republic of Colombia.

There are still monuments around Bogota that show scenes from whenBogota was ruled by Spanish people. Bogota develops more and more each day

becoming one of the biggest trading centers in South America. Today there are

people moving to Bogota everyday from America, Europe, Asia and other

countries from South America and around the world for jobs, better hospitals,

better education, land, and food. The city advances technologically and

cultural each day with new discoveries on how to improve the city and new

ways to end poverty around Bogota.

Bogota is like the inside of a computer, little sparking things and wires

BASIC DATABogota is the capital of Colombia located in the

North part of South America. The population of Bogota is about 7.19 million people all across

Bogota, but the whole Metropolitan area (Bogota,

Medellin, Cali in the middle of all of them) is about

8.25 million people. The city lies nearly two miles

above sea water (data recorded in 2007). The

weather and climate is usually cold and cloudy

about 55 degrees F and 13 degrees C. In winter the

tips of the mountains are covered in snow but the

main city is not. The main symbol of Bogota is

three stripes, yellow top, blue middle, and bottom

red with a big brown eagle in the middle. The main

and only language in Bogota is Spanish. The main

religion is Roman Catholic. Some traditions and

Customs in Bogota are Easter week which is Palm

Sunday, Maundy, Thursday, Good Friday and

Ascension. There are other holidays like Christmas

and Halloween that are still celebrated the same.

Some other holidays in Bogota are Carnival, St.

Josephs, and Independence Day on July 20th. Somecommon landmarks are Bolivar Plaza, Tequendama

Falls, La Candelana, and the Gold Museum. The

topography of Bogota is mostly the main city

surrounded by lakes, rivers, tropical jungles and

forests.

In the 1920’s Bogota used to be one of the most

modern, safe cities in Colombia and a big adding

center for coffee and other products. At night it was

safe for kids to go out and play in the

neighborhoods and there wasn’t much need for

security. The streets were clean and full of people

and crime was very low. The government had no

problem handling the law.

In the beginning of 1950 some people that had

almost nothing in life turned against the

government and joined rebel groups thinking they

could “help” the people. Drug cartels started to

expand and hired more and more people to fight for

them.

Rebel groups started to kill and kidnap people by

planting bombs around the cities to cause terror. Italso influenced more people to create rebel groups,

some groups fought for land or money and some

groups fought just to destroy the government. Drug

cartels started sending tons of ships loaded with

drugs to U.S. starting a war between the cartels and

the U.S. government. When drug cartels,

paramilitary groups, rebels and mercenaries joined

forces to create the terrorist group, F.A.R.C

(Armed, Revolutionary, Forces of Colombia) (inEnglish) some of the following events happened:

Cartel wars around Colombia

Kidnapping entire communities

Training teenagers and adults to be rebels

Bomb planting in the cities

Assassinations

Hostage situations

Law corruption

Today, different governments fight to stop this war

against drug cartels and rebels but it is still the

biggest change of the century in Colombia and it

expands through cities like Cali, Bogota and

Medellin ruining the wonderful things of the city.

POPULATION AND

RESOURCES IN BOGOTA

Long ago about 500 years ago the Muiscas moved to Colombia for resources such as food, gold,

natural minerals, wool and a chance to create a new community/establishment. When the Spaniards

moved to Colombia they took the Muisca’s land and gold and made it their land. The Spanish

people created a bigger establishment that spread all across the borders of Colombia, and named

their capital city, Bogota.

People moved to Bogota for jobs, land/place to live, and education. In the past people from around

the world moved to Colombia mostly for resources like oil, rocks like emerald, sapphire, and

farming and cattle jobs. They also moved to improve their new land and making it safer and better.

Today there are people moving to Bogota everyday from America, Europe, Asia and other countries

from South America and around the world for jobs, better hospitals, better education, land, and

food.

The main industries/companies today are clothing, textile, cement, food, automakers, commercial,

banking and farming. People choose to live in Bogota because it’s a good trading center, and there is

a wide variety of jobs.

Today there are about 7.4 million people living in Bogota at the moment most of them work at

political jobs or commercial jobs. Most of the men/adults must join the army after high school and

serve the military for a year. Ninety – five percent are Roman Catholic and more than half of the

population are Bogotanos.

Most people today move to Bogota for a job that gives them enough money to live. Most people live

in the suburbs and work at banks, commercial businesses, political and financial jobs. They also

come for the variety of places to live, not only houses but buildings, penthouses and farms across the

mountains.

A woman named Luz Cruz who now lives in the Philippines with

her children, but lived mostly in Bogota tells us about a typical day

in Bogota. “In a normal Saturday would go with my friends to La

Zona Rosa for some shopping and lunch.” “We would meet at one

of the restaurants and have a typical lunch of Arepas with butter, bean soup, chorizo and corn.” Luz is a fan of shopping so she likes

looking around the clothes part of Zona Rosa and buy her self a

purple dress made from silk and a handbag made of sea shells. Luz

likes to keep up with today’s fashion.

Anecdote from a typical citizen in Bogota

People in Bogota have changed the landscape the landscape by constructing buildings, houses,

factories, roads and war, violence between people and crimes. People changed the landscape of

Bogota because there were too many people and lots of land so people started to build more houses. Before Bogota was even turned into a city it used to be full of forests and jungles and just small

families living on farms.

In 1490 when ships filled with explorers from Spain started going everywhere, they found Bogota,

Colombia where the Muiscas lived and started to chop down trees, dug out plants and grass and

started creating a city. The Spanish people arrived in 1499 and created a establishment which in 1886

it was turned into a city named Bogota, Capital of the Republic of Colombia.

Today Bogota is filled with skyscrapers, buildings, roads, highways, shopping malls, stores, houses

and cars everywhere. Places like the Colombian cathedral in Bogota are still kept.

Cathedral in 1920 Cathedral Today

Those two photos show the same cathedral in 1920 and today. The difference between the two photos

is that in the one in the left the cathedral was surrounded by trees and grass fields while in the photo of

today the ground was covered in cement and the tress where cut down. The main thing I have learned about the landscape change of Bogota is that when the land was turned

into houses and buildings people moved in with their families and businesses/companies and as more

people moved in from different countries the land was expanded more and more until it became a big

city and the capital of a country.

The Basics of Shanghai

Shanghai is located in a

country called China.

They Area or region is inAsia. The population

of this country is 19

million residents in

Shanghai (In 2010).

Shanghai is located

on the east tip of

Yangtze River Delta

and halfway along

China’s eastern

coastline. The climate

in Shanghai is around

18oC. It is shivering

in midwinter. Theyspeak Shanghainese

(Shanghaihua)

northern Mandarin

variety. Shanghai’s

religion people go to the

Jade Buddha Temple.

There predominant

religion is Buddhism.

There are 140,000

Catholics in Shanghai.

The traditional costumes

they wear are called

pien-fu (ceremonial

costume). I am going to

share two specialholidays in Shanghai.

The first one is

Valentine’s Day. This is

held on the seventh day

of the seventh lunarmonth. The

second one is

called Western

This is about old

Shanghai when was

Shanghai made? Why do

people from other

countries come to

Shanghai? Well I can I

answer that! The Yuan

imperial governmentcreated Shanghai. In

1915 The British had war

with Shanghai so they

had to trade stuff for

money and resources.

Shanghai is in Shanghai

and this is important to

shanghai because needs

lots and lots of recoursesand money to survive!

In Shanghai there are

opportunities in this city

because Shanghai lives

next to sea water so they

are very lucky that they

have an important

resource. So people

need lots and lots of

water because there are

300,000 foreigners inShanghai. Shanghai

spends 350 billion Yuan

on six pillar industries

over the next 5 tears.

People sell technology,

automobiles, electrical

and mechanical

products in Shanghai

so maybe that’s whyShanghai is so wealthy!

There are over 10

million residents in

Shanghai which is 25%

Koreans, 15% Taiwanese

and 25% others!

Whales. They both decided to build a new

Martin Place. Martin place soon turned in

to a Pedestrian Plaza in 1969, and

upgraded in 1999. The GPO is still a

landmark but the cars and cabs are all

gone. Martin Place began to change, the

buildings are bigger and taller, there are

stoplights, fountains, restaurants, andmore. Martin Place was improved and was

opened in 1978. The people who changed

Martin Place wanted to make more

buildings for others to stay in or they could

build buildings for people to work in.

Martin Place is different from before but

there is one thing no one changed. As you

can see the old clock tower still stands from

a long time ago. The old clock tower would

be a reminder of the day Martin Place

improved. And now the tower is a

landmark and Martin Place became

famous, which attracted more people.

Vancouver

Then and NowVANCOUVER WINTER

OLYMPICS  Vancouver used to be cargo city before. Theneverything changed after host Olympics Winter2010. Vancouver got international attention, and they applied to host Olympic Game.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) picked and voted Vancouver to host, and Vancouver

won. Then that made a Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010. Vancouver Winter Olympic Game

affects Vancouver a lot. Firstly Canadians won first time in Winter Olympic game with 13

medals, many people said that was because they played in their country. Secondly, lots

of visitors came. Mostly visitors were player, or to cheer players and to watch games,

and that help Vancouver to earned lots of money. That helped Vancouver to become

popular city in Canada, also in the World.

POPULATION

Vancouver was established in 1865. Vancouver

located nearby North Pacific Ocean, and that

made Vancouver became cargo city in Canada. In

that time, lots of industries created lots of

jobs, and many immigrants came to get jobs.

Immigrants were Asians, mainly Chinese. Now,Vancouver is a biggest wholesale and retail trading center in Canada. Many people visit

Vancouver, because of great resources, which are: mild climate, beaches, and parks etc.

Those things are making people relax, and that’s the one reason why visitors came. The

second reason is because of the Vancouver Olympic Winter Game, many people visited

Vancouver. Population of Vancouver was 141,034 in 2006, and half of them are Canadians,

and the other half is Asian, mainly Chinese. Vancouver is the busiest port in Canada.

Industries in Vancouver are bigger then business. The reason why many people choose

Vancouver to live in is because of nice resources, which are for relaxing.

As a tourist I don’t really know about all of

Moscow. To me though during two weeks

of intensive touring around the city I think

I’ve gathered enough knowledge to tell

you that Moscow is indeed such a

wonderful place to be! During the first

week of Moscow my wife Janet and I went

to Red Square, Bolshoi theatre and the

Tretyakov Gallery. I never knew my brain

could be packed with so much fascinating

history! During the second week Jane and I

just chose to kind of lay back and enjoy

our vacation. We went to a lot of

parks ,shops , cafes, restaurants and malls. After these two weeks of embracing

Moscow I confident to say that Moscow is

the most exciting place to be in!

A

NE CDOTE S  !

As a Local of Moscow I know about all

of the beautiful Moscow inside out! To

me it is the perfect place to shop and

have fun day and night. For the daywhen I get out of school I just chill with

my friends at the Loft Cafe, at night me

and my friend Susannah go out to Miami

Bowling and try to finally get a strike

three times in a row. Sometimes the

whole family goes out to Gorky Park for

the day and at night we might go to this

amazing restaurant! Or sometimes I stay

at home and chat while doing my

homework, any way it is still fun. Afterspending my whole life in Moscow I

think I have the right to tell you that

Moscow is definitely the place for me.

Get to know Moscow A Bit Better

Moscow is a welcoming

city that has the most

outstanding tourist attractions.

It is in the country of Russia

which is in the far eastern side

of Europe. Moscow’s

population is a rough

17,000,000 (2009) including

illegal and legal residents.

Moscow is located on the banks

of Moskva a river which flows

just over 500km, through theeast European plain in central

Russia. The weather throughout

the year is usually 10 Celsius,

sometimes 0 Celsius, but it has

gone lower to -42 Celsius so

there are hardly any day light

hours. Moscow has a coat of

arms which consists of a

horseman with a spear slaying a

basilisk, or in some cases St.George killing a dragon. St.

George’s real name is actually

Yury Dolgoruki who is the real

founder of Moscow. The flag

also has the same symbol

which consists of the three

colors, red, blue, white. In

Moscow they speak Russian

but they have an ancient

language called Slavonic but it

is only used in religious

purposes only. Speaking of

religions they have wide range

of them including Buddhism,

Judaism, Islam and many more,

but the predominant religion is

Christianity. Muscovites havetraditions and culture no other

city has, some similar to other

traditions like Fashion week or

Victory day but some are so

different it’s shocking! One of

the different ones is Pascha or

Easter as we would call it, they

take Pascha ever so serious like

a tiger guarding her young from

predators. They have absolutelyno interruptions even during

Soviet Times. Another one is

Maslenitsa, it is a week of

celebrating cheese so basically

a cheese fare/parade! It also

celebrates other food like bread

and pancakes but it’s based

more on cheese. Like their

many holidays and traditions

you cannot miss their beautiful

attractions and landmarks. The

most famous Landmark is Red

Square, beside are landmarks

and inside is where all the

history happened. The

topography is all greens, they

are on the plains of westernRussia near the Moskva river.

These pictures show how people have changed the landscape of Cathedral of Christ the Savior in

Moscow. Before, in the year 1812, Cathedral of Christ the Savior was a religious place with plenty

of statues. It was also a people place with lots of gardens and fountains. Then, around the year

1931, humans have changed the landscape by demolishing it, according to the Soviet because they

wanted to build a monument called “The Palace of the Soviets”. Unfortunately it didn’t makemuch money so they rebuilt the Cathedral in the year 1990. They did this

because Emperor Alexander 1 wanted to build it in honor of Christ who

saved them from Napoleons Army. They recieved again permission

from the Soviet government after some hassle. Today, because of this

change, the city of Moscow is now a very rich, historical yet modern in

some way.

What just Happened!

Moscow’s History In Half a Page

Moscow is the most

powerful city in Russia

because the city was involved

in so many things. They also

conquered non-Russian

colonies. During the year

1812, the city of Moscow had

suffered a lot, Count

Rostopchin ,general of

Moscow ,had everything set

on fire without warning

anyone because he knew that

the French army would be

heading there. When theFrench army arrived there

were more fires and people

were forced to flee. Later, in

the year 1813 they also made

a new law, a Commission for

the Construction of the City of

Moscow was established.

Moscow had the unique

opportunity to start from

scratch; they constructed and

reconstructed buildings

improving them like the

“Garden Ring” which

gradually widened the streets

they also reconstructed

“Minin and Pozharsky” which

is located at Red Square. But

there were also a few

problems like a severe supply

shortage (e.g. bricks, steel and

glass). Therefore houses had

to be built with wood. Laterthey were destroyed and they

made it better. The city’s

population grew rapidly and

new companies were later

formed. There was also

Alexander Witberg Cathedral

of Christ the savior which

later turned into Saint Basil’s

Cathedral. To this day you can

still see the Garden Ring or

old remains of wooden

houses. You can also see the

Minin and Pozharsky still

making a lot of money or

Saint Basil’s Cathedral. The

fire was a disaster but the

Muscovites turned it into

something wonderful .!

Why Come Here?! The city of Moscow was established in the year 1114. It was located on

the banks of the Moscow River (or Moskva in Russian) in the central part of Russia. In the past people came to Moscow because the vast land was of fertile

and lush greens perfect for growing food and raising cattle. People used

Moscow as a meeting place and agriculture but nothing more. But today people

come to Moscow because the nightlife in Moscow is how we’d say “exciting”.

Moscow is the source of entertainment in Russia; it has a great shopping mall

(GUM), beautiful cathedrals and lovely gardens and such. Although the it is the

Las Vegas of Russia the population in Moscow is a rough 17,000,000 but that

would be including legal and illegal residents (2009). So it is the home of manypeople, the major nationalities are Russian (Muscovites) and the Israeli (Jews).

The major industries and businesses today include, Cooper Industries,

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kei Company. Some reasons why people live

in Moscow is because they have a wide variety of excellent schools with high

standards. There are plenty of jobs, the city has a lot of twins/sisters and lastly

as I have said the energy of Moscow is “overwhelming”. Therefore Moscow is

now a city with almost everything you need, all it needs is you.

An Extraordinary

Event which Changed

New York Completely

! !  New York City was the

heart of the world’s economy and

business. And in the middle of

New York economy was the Twin

Towers. 1969 August, The 7

World Trade Center was finished

constructing. The building

opened on 1973, April and from

that day on, it was attracting

huge amount of foreign

investments and big companies. It was the tallest building in the

U.S. Then, everything changed.

On September 9th 2001, two

American Airline planes drove

right in to the Twin Towers. Both

South and North towers were

burnt down.

As a result, 2,752 people

were killed and the remains fromthe burn left a huge mess in

Manhattan. Lots of people lost

their jobs and were injured.

People had to demolish the 7

World Trade Center even if it

wasn’t burnt down because it

was damaged beyond repair.

Parts of the city were disabled

from the attack and lots of people

lost their jobs. It took the whole

city 8 months just to clean up the

remains from the burns.

Manhattan was in chaos, and a

big part of the city was disabled

due to the clean up. Two years

after this incident, America

declared a war against Iraq. The

U.S received help from the UN,

UK, Korea, Italy, Australia, etc. in

2003; the American troops

managed to capture Hussein, the

one responsible for the attack

and executed him. Because of

9/11, over 3000 people died

(including soldiers), the U.S had a

war with Iraq, and Manhattan is

now in a huge mess, with a big

construction site.

Now, construction workers in

New York are now rebuilding the

7 World Trade Center. Theyshould be finished building by

2013

9/11 was the biggest

attack in the U.S

history. A terror

network named AL QAEDA

lead by Osama Bin

Laden planned and

attacked the Twin

Towers. 2752 people

died from this attack

and the 7 World Trade

Center had to be

demolished.

New York

City

Population

In 1524, Giovanni Da

Verrazano established a

small port city in New

York, located on the East

Coast of U.S. He was on a

voyage and he stopped by

in the Upper New York

Bay. On 1609, September,

Europeans started to settle

in New York because an

Englishman, Henry

Hudson found an

abundant beaver

population. During that

time, beaver pelts were in

fashion in Europe, which

created a huge business in

Europe. Beaver pelts

made lots of

Europeans to settle in

New York.

Now days, New

York is the heart of

international business.

Around 8,391,881people live in New

York. Because New

York is like a bowl of

soup with different

types of ingredients,

there are different kinds of

people living here. Those

people are Americans,

Chinese, Indians,

Hispanic, etc. Most of the

People came to New York

for good jobs and good

environment to live in.

Also, good economy and

money attracted famous

brands such as Prada,

Nike, J.P. Morgan Chase &

Co., Channel, Apple, and

etc. Its like the famousbrands are little paper

clips and New York is a

huge strong magnet. New

York is a major city when it

comes to business and

economy. The world’s

economy depends on NewYork!

NEW YORK CITY LANDSCAPE

These two pictures are pictures of Manhattan before and after

9/11. You can see that the twin towers (the tallest two buildings)

are missing. That is because AL QAEDA, a terrorist group lead by

Osama Bin Laden attacked the twin towers and burnt them down. The

terrorist drove two planes right through the twin towers, and both

towers were burnt down.

This change of landscape had a huge effect on New York. Some

of the effects were that 3000 people died from this attack,

portions of the city was disabled, the center of international

business is now in chaos, it left a huge mess in Manhattan which

took the whole city 8months just to clean up, and the other world

trade center buildings had to be demolished because they were

damaged beyond repair. Tons of people lost their family members

and jobs. This event was in the headlines of every newspaper you

could ever think of.

Now, in New York the new 7 World Trade Center is being build.

According to the plan, they should be finished building by 2013.
