Water's carrying capacity is legendary, for agents of ease and disease. Does the water we mingle inour Unitarian Universalist Water Communion Rite carry agency?

Leadership & FollowershipJerry Katzmann, President, Board of Directors

Earlier this year, Rev. Hudson used the familiar image of Rochester's flying geese formations as ametaphor to talk about congregational life and social justice work. The flock has a leader who knows thedestination and does the hard work of breaking the wind for the "vee". The flock has faith in the leader, follows on the air currents, and importantly, when the leader grows weary and slides off to the side totake their place in line, another goose steps (soars) forward to the leader position.

At this year's annual meeting we recognized 5committee chairs who stepped aside. In steppingdown from Chair of the Caring Congregation,Jennifer Harveland reminded me of the need tomake room for new people and ideas and quotedRear Admiral Grace Hopper, "The mostdangerous phrase in the English language is:we've always done it this way".

Our "retiring" committee chairs are:

Jennifer Harveland, Caring Congregation.Jennifer worked to improve the committee's communication tools and made it easier to volunteer byorganizing tasks into 2 week blocks.Linda Thompson, cochair, Hospitality and Growth Council. Linda and Ann Lien introducedSunday morning hospitality teams to spread the effort and include more people in making our churchmore welcoming. Anne BlackSinak, Design Committee. Anne has used her creative talents in many ways in ourchurch and now has moved to chair the Worship Committee.Jeff Larson Keller, Worship Committee. Jeff has been a member of our church for 28 years andchaired Worship Committee for more years than I can remember. He was an important part ofestablishing our Worship Associate program and has been a steady voice from the pulpit.

She wants to recruit newer caregiversand pair them with experienced members in "caring teams".Rebecca Rolstad, cochair, Hospitality and Growth. Rebecca joined the church 15 years ago andshe and Steve's enthusiasm and energy lit us up. Rebecca and Steve organized Rev. CarolHepokoski's installation service, and she is now ready to bring her energy to hospitality and growth.Richard Hutton, Design Committee. Richard has served on the Board of Director's, has a longhistory in craft and the arts, and is now stepping into the Chair of Design Committee.Anne BlackSinak, Worship Committee. Anne has been a worship associate and is moving fromDesign Committee Chair to Worship Committee Chair. Her creative and analytic skills are a perfect fit.Linda Thompson, Finance Committee. Linda has been involved in almost every aspect and everycommittee in our church. In addition to cochairing hospitality and growth, she was on Finance,Property, Social Justice Council, and taught in the children's education program. She and Bill arehardworking thoughtful congregants, and she will be a good steward of our church's assets.

In addition to committee leadership, there are changes on the Board:

David Kallmes steps down as Board President. David led the Board for 2 years and facilitated asmooth and respectful transition for Rev. Carol Hepokoski. David has embraced the transition process, and has left us well on our way to the next leg of this congregation's journey.Erika Beetcher steps down as a Board Directoratlarge. Erika is one of those highenergy people thatmakes us all wonder how she does it. Erika willingly volunteered for a number of adhoc task groupsincluding religious education activities for children & youth and our church history project.

Jerry Katzmann moves from VicePresident to President. Jerry and Elizabeth have been members ofthe church for 38 years. The Kathe Yoss Scholarship Fund

PossAbilities of Southern Minnesota is a private, nonprofit organization which creates opportunities forchildren and adults with disabilities to contribute to and connect with the community. We are veryfortunate to have the Kathe Yoss Scholarship Fund for children and young adults whoparticipate in our Youth Recreation program.

As many of you know, Kathe is a gifted educator and leader in services for children with disabilities. Hercommitment to the children she worked with was honored by Ann and Noel Petersen and othercolleagues and friends by establishing the Kathe Yoss Scholarship Fund.

PossAbilities uses the Scholarship Fund to help with camp fees or activity fees so kids can

Looking for a Volunteer Opportunity?Do you have some responsibility for generating income or balancing income with expenses at work orhome? Do you enjoy our church auction? Do you LOVE helping your children with math? Perhaps youwere on this committee "once upon a time" and were just waiting for the right time to return? Thenconsider joining our Finance Committee!

This group is not just about numbers andspreadsheets but you will get better at readingsuch files. It is a great way to learn more about ourchurch budget and operations and one way toparticipate within a smaller group at church. Wealso try to bring a sense of humor and some nonfinancial conversation to our meetings!

We look at the monthly financial reports prepared by Connie Schuelka, our CoCongregationalAdministrator; we monitor our income andexpenses; we make recommendations when larger

expenses are encountered by committees; we organize the annual church auction (this year's Auctionis on November 12, 2016), and we also assist with the Stewardship campaign which secures thechurch's expected operating income for the next church year.

We meet at 7 pm on the2nd Thursday of each month. Our next meeting is Thursday, August 11. Youare welcome to attend, and please contact any current members for more information.
