Vehicle Inspection Presentation

Required Documentation

Each vehicle MUST contain ORIGINAL Registration & Insurance documents

NJ TRANSIT recommends that original documents be kept together AND in the same place on all vehicles

Safety Equipment

First Aid Kits Must be Mounted Each vehicle MUST be equipped with Safety

Triangles It is recommended that all vehicles carry proper

seatbelt cutters and not Letter openers All safety buzzers and lights must be in working

order (Rear emergency door, windows, etc..) Emergency egress windows & roof hatch’s

must be lubricated twice yearly and must be able to be opened with ease.

VEHICLE INTERIOR

Seats need to be free of dirt, debris, stains, & tears

All cabin lights must be working including interior stepwell, driver’s light, etc..

Seat Belts must be clean and operational Floors must be kept free of dirt & debris

(including the driver’s area)

Interiors: continued

A/C & Heating systems must be FULLY operational

Interiors must be kept clean All dashboard gauges, instruments, and knobs

must be in proper working condition

SIGNAGE/DECALS All vehicles purchased with 5310 funds must

have the following decals: “No Smoking”, “Seatbelts Required”, “Vehicle Height”,

Due to new NJ No Smoking Law, all other vehicle should also now have “No Smoking” signage in them

All Emergency exits (windows/doors) must be marked with “Emergency Exit” decals that are not faded per NJDOT.

All vehicles purchased with 5310 funds must have signage detailing Mobility Device securement instructions & Lift Operating instructions

Mobility Device Lifts

Lift platforms should have a slight upward tilt upon deployment. Platforms that do not are marked “Not Level”

Lifts that are equipped with safety belts must be free of ANY damage. Those that are found frayed must be replaced

Lifts with safety belts must have functional interlock systems

All interior and exterior lift lights must be fully operational

All Lifts must have manual hand pump stored in provided clip

Lifts: continued

All lift safety hand rails should be tight and not have an exceptional amount of play

Lift control box shall be damage free and the wire cannot be cut or damaged

Securement SystemsSecurement Systems Vehicles must have 4 floor belts per

mobility space. Belts must be FROM SAME System. Shoulder belts MUST ALSO MATCH floor system

Floor Tracks must be kept free of dirt & debris

Securements continued

Securement Retractors MUST be stored in provided storage containers after use. Torn pouches & damaged boxes are not acceptable

Securement Retractors and all belts must be kept clean. See manufacturer’s literature for proper cleaning instructions

Vehicle Exteriors

All Exterior decals and paint must be damage free All vehicles purchased with 5310 funds must have NJT’s

colors & identification numbers (16-???). 16 numbers must be posted on the front header panel and at the top of the rear of the vehicle.

All vehicles purchased with 5310 funds must display “Owned By/Purchased By” decals as well as “Operated By” decals

All exterior lights and signals must be fully operational

All lens covers and housings must be free of damage

All exterior reflectors must be damage free All exterior mirrors must be damage free All vehicles purchased with 5310 funds must

have a fully functional reverse alarm

Body Damage: Wear and Tear Reasonable wear and tear damage may be

determined as acceptable for 5310 vehicles purchased prior to 2003

The definition of reasonable wear & tear is scuffs, small scratches, faded paint & decals, and small dents

Body Damage: Substantial 5310 funded vehicles must be damage

free. No dents, No deep gashes, No detached body panels are acceptable

Decals must be damage free

TiresPer NJDOT, a tire cannot be used having

exposed fabric on the tread or sidewall

Tires: continued

Per NJDOT, the front tires shall have a minimum tread groove of 4/32. Rear tires minimum is 2/32. If any part of the tire is found to be non compliant, the tire will not be acceptable

Per NJDOT, a vehicle shall not be operated with re-grooved, recapped, or retread tires on the front wheels. This is for any vehicle carrying between 16-25 passengers not including the driver

For vehicles carrying 15 passengers or less, these tire types are not to be utilized at all according to NJDOT

NJ TRANSIT Inspection Form As you can see by the

actual form, NJT’s inspection is a basic safety inspection.

It’s possible that in the future, inspections may become more mechanical in nature

All defects must be repaired within the number of days indicated. Vehicles may be placed out-of-service for Inoperable or Defective items listed in bold and shaded print. The vehicle may not be returned to service until defect is repaired and the Manager Minibus Support in the Office of Policy Technology & Customer Service is notified of the repairs.
