Graduation can be a time of joy, sadness, freedom and change—joy for students as they take on the next challenge in their life at post secondary schools; freedom to explore and take control of their lives; sadness in leaving Vancouver College and the comfort it has provided over the years; and change, which can come in many shapes and forms. Dear Alumni,At the suggestion of David Hardy, our Principal, we are planning a pilgrimage tour to Ireland in spring 2009 in order to return to the roots of VC, Blessed Edmund Rice’s homeland.

This 13 day tour is open to adults, and we invite all Alumni to join us. Our agent, a VC alumnus himself, Shawn Gallacher ’84, has put together an attractive itinerary, highlights of which are included here. susTainabiliTy aT Vc wiTh The enVironmenT club Under the direction of middle school teacher Kate Keogh, sustainability has taken on a new meaning at Vancouver College. Kate’s love for the outdoors and passion for teaching has led to the development of Environment Clubs (for each section the boys are taught how to minimize their footprint on the environment). This year has been very successful with Middle School and Senior School sections participating in an unprecedented number of conservation and environmen-tal education activities while the Elementary School section had another year of diligently running their paper recycling program.

In September the Middle School Environment Club visited the Wildlife Refuge at Grouse Mountain. After a spectacular gondola ride, students walked around the wildlife refuge and observed the two grizzlies. The timber wolves were evident in the lower enclosure at the base of the mountain. Septem-ber also saw a dedicated group of Grade 7 students helping the BC SPCA clean the shores of Trout Lake as part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. Numerous cigarette butts were found (>1000!), but the most exciting sightings were of a giant caterpillar and a bullfrog (invasive species!).

The Middle School visited the Vancouver Compost Garden in Kitsilano to learn about different methods of composting, how to build a straw bale shed, and put together a worm composter. Senior members attended an overnight workshop at Camp Capilano as part of the Robert Bateman Engaging Youth program. Students helped evaluate a new interactive program for youth. They also attended the Environmental Educators Provincial Specialists Association of British Colum-bia professional development day.

The annual snowshoe trip was at Cypress Mountain this year. There was a lot of snow and fun was had by all as we tromped through the woods to Hollyburn Lodge.

One of the conservation activities new to the club this year was Ivy Busting with the Stanley Park Ecology Society.A primarily Middle School group led the way in February, joining a public Ivy Pull near Brockton Oval. The Senior En-vironment Club worked in a nearby area in March, clearing the way for the planting of new trees. This invasive species removal was essential to the regeneration plans for Stanley Park after the loss of so many trees. Also new this year was the painting of yellow fish on some of the storm drains in the streets around Vancouver College. In two teams, Middle and Senior students worked together to increase community awareness of the link between storm drains and our river systems. In conjunction with the painting, members hung information flyers on neighbourhood doors.

Two other yearly traditions continued this year – a visit to the Steller sea lion research area at the Vancouver Aquarium, and a sea kayaking trip in Indian Arm. Both of these trips had recreational and learning components. At the Aquarium, Dr. Dave Rosen introduced students to marine mammal research and they had a chance to meet some of the sea lions up close, really close! The sea kayaking trip involved some strong paddling against a head wind, but everyone made the distance. The race without paddles was a highlight, at least for the teachers! Everyone else seemed to get rather wet.

Perhaps the highlight of the year for the Senior Environment Club was the camping trip to Newcastle Island, a small island off Nanaimo. The weather cooperated, and the week-end was sunny, warm and fun. We hiked for 10 km around the island, collecting beach trash along the way and learn-ing about the island’s natural and cultural history. The local fauna (deer and raccoons) were seen and the Canada geese made their presence known through early morning honking.

This has been a great spring for Golf at VC! This year we ran three squads: Senior A, Senior B, and Junior, all three very deep with talent. Although we have four players graduating this year, the future looks very solid. The Senior A team (Kyle and Nicholas Chan, Chris King, Julian Righton all grade 12’s along with Conrado Paderes, grade 11, and alternate Keaton Bast, grade 10) are the Zone Champions this year. They won the finals with a team score of 293 (par 284) and will go on to play in the Provincial Cham-pionship Tournament on May 26 - 29 in Nelson, BC.

SCIENCEVC’s dynamic duo Finishes 2nd in Physics competitionUnder grey mid-May skies, sixty Physics students representing schools from across BC scurried about the PNE grounds with calculators, accelerometers, and exam booklets in hand. Their three-hour mission was to put their money where their mouths were and solve three physics problems related to particular rides featured at Playland. One might, at first glance, see dozens of sopping wet, carefree, and gleeful grade 12s whirling, flipping and flailing about, but the students were definitely serious because at stake was a $3,000 cash prize put up by UBC, sponsors of the event which started three years ago.

VC’s first-ever entry of Michael Yang and Tom Curran garnered second place honours, scoring fractions of a point out of the big money. The duo are among the best physicsstudents to ever come out of the Christian Brothers school.

VC Claims gold and Silver at Science FairAfter being selected as a top BC entry at the provincial science fair, gradu-ating student Evan Woo went on to the Canada-Wide event to bring home gold and silver medals in two judging categories, as well as some $45,000 in scholarships. Despite his significant results, Evan was humbled by the experience. “I’ve never been around so many amaz-ing, smart people,” he gushed. This aspiring young scientist is headed to UBC in the fall for studies in biology.

The CWSF features the very best of the nation’s young scientists presenting project based research to panels of industry and post secondary-based judges over the span of a week in mid-May. From over 25,000 competitors in regional fairs across the country, a few hundred students compete in Ottawa for top honours in divisions such as life sci-ences, engineering, and environmental innovation. Mr. Ben Kim Senior Physics Teacher

Angus Taylor signs with uWAngus Taylor (Grade 12) has just signed with the University of Washington for a Track and Field scholarship next year. UW’s throws coach, Reedus Thurmond, is planning to come up north for a special event to recognize Angus.

Nathan Clare (Grad 2007) is part of an impressive freshman class that Simon Fraser University will be counting on for the upcoming field lacrosse season. Nathan was a starter at midfield for the U19 BC Selects last summer and also received an invitation to the U19 National Team tryout camp. Nathan has also flourished in the box version of the sport -- having finished second in scoring in the West Coast Junior Lacrosse League last season as a member of the Delta Islanders.

Aided by the use of the new fitness facility, the team made great strides improving their strength and speed. League meets started in April with competitive meets on weekends. The team won the Fraser Valley Invita-tional in Surrey with Angus Taylor setting a meet record in the Discus. Rohan Stewart easily won the 100m and 200m sprints, while James Emerson also placed first in the Long Jump. At the Ocean Athletics meet, Rohan Stewart set a meet record in the 100m with a time of 10.94 seconds, James Emer-son also set a record in the Long Jump and Michael Pember followed in the 1500m Steeple Chase. Dur-ing the Zone final, Rohan also broke the school re-cord of 10.7 seconds set by VC sports Hall of Famer Al Dukowski in 1972. Rohan ran a blistering time of 10.5 seconds. the field where fine passing out the line lead to sean Terrell crashing over the touch line for the first try of the game. a missed convert by ryan shams meant the score stayed at 5 – 0 irish. soon after shams converted a penalty kick making it 8 – 0. with the nerves settling the irish dug in for a spirited game. before the half the wildcats made a try and con-verted the kick making the score 8 – 7 in favour of the irish.

The second half started with renewed pressure from the wildcats. but the irish stayed off the pressure to quickly counterattack and score another try moving ahead 15-7. Taking every advantage to score when the opportunity arose, ryan shames kicked a penalty moving the score to 18 -7. The wildcats were not to be taken lightly as they pressure the irish late in the game scoring a try by taking it wide around the corner. The only left to do was for the irish to hold off for another three minutes to seal the victory which they did.

“we have a squad of 30 players and it took contribu-tions from everyone throughout the season to earn this title. They deserve it” said mark “Freddie” davies.

special thanks go to gary Jones, gerry stafford, mark davies, Jeremy sabell (Vancouver rowing club coach) and the meralomas for supplying equipment and jer-seys. This ones for you!

ROWING 2008Congratulations to the Irish rowers, who have just completed a suc-cessful season! The season started off with a celebration as this was the 20th year of irish rowing. it was great to see old rowers pull on their unisuits and attempt to defeat the erg one last time at the “twenty years in a row” reunion.

The season started with some big wins at the bc indoor rowing champi-onships as rowers brought home three gold and four silver medals. with this record we knew we were ready for a competitive season on the

water.

The crews did not disappoint and at the two major bc regattas the crew raced well. The first regatta was at brentwood college which had the athletes compete against some tough club and school crews from bc and washington. The junior lightweight four of louis leung, liam Todd, angus Todd, ryan wong, and Patrik lau won gold. The regatta continued with many successes including a silver in the Jr. c quad who narrowly missed the gold. other strong finishes included: Jr b 8+ - silver, Jr b 4+ - silver, Jr a school 8+ - bronze, Jr a lwt 4+ - bronze.

next up was the shawnigan lake regatta, where the crew competed against both bc club and school crews. unfortunately, the second day of competition was cancelled due to bad weather conditions. however, the boys competed well on the first day. There were three big wins including the first ever irish gold in the Junior c double. The crew of John darby cole and adam dvorak led the competitors for the entire race and finished well ahead of the rest of the field. The irish also took home gold in the Jr a JV 8+ and Jr a JV 4+, silver in the Jr. a lwt four and bronze in the Jr. b JV 4+.

For the JV and novice crews the next regatta was hosted by the delta deas rowing club. The crews performed well but the big win of the day went to the Jr, c 4X+ that won the gold with ease.

For the senior rowers the final regatta of the year is the premium event – canadian nationals in st. catharines, ontario. The boys were champions both on and off the water as coaches and officials applauded their respect-ful attitudes and good sportsmanship. it was a great week with every athlete making it to a final on sunday. special congratulations to charles heath and Thomas lattimer, two five-year men to finish off their high school rowing career with a silver medal in the senior lightweight pair.

ANguS

Wraps up Final year in StyleANguS TAyloR is never one with a lot to say.

He prefers to do his talking through his actions.

Last weekend at the BC High School Track and Field Championships those actions spoke volumes, as the Grade 12 Vancouver College student and Rich-mond resident won three—count ‘em—three medals to cap his high school career on a high note.

He won the boys’ hammer throw with a toss of 63.78 metres, just missing the Vancouver College record of 65.26 metres. He was also just shy of the BC record of 54.28 metres in winning the discus with a throw of 53.18 metres, and placed second in the shot put with a personal best throw of 14.99 metres.

“This was a great track meet to throw the distances I did,” said Taylor, “I feel this was an excellent way of ending my high school season and transitioning me into the club season where I hope to achieve the world junior standard and travel to Poland for the World Junior Track and Field Championships in July.”

He also hopes to qualify for the Commonwealth Youth Games in India in October. Taylor is off to the University of Washington in September where he ac-cepted a track and field scholarship with the Huskies after considering offers from several other universities.

It wasn’t quite like the ’72 Canada Russia Summit Series but for the 13 VC alumni participating in the first ever Vancouver College Alumni Hockey Tournament on March 14, 2008 at UBC’s main ice rink, it was close to it. Headlining the home team was 1959 graduate Dan Kolesnik from Kelowna who made the trip down to Vancouver to face off against members from grad classes ranging from 1990 to 2003. Thanks in part to Vancouver College hockey coach Enzo Nardi (‘96) and Chris Clarke (‘01), both teams wore authentic home and away Vancouver College hockey jerseys.

The away team was lead by coach Nardi, who played centre ice and fearless right winger Paddy Mahoney, while the home team was lead by Dan Kolesnik and power forwards Galen Allan and Brent Robinson.

BC Lions CEO and President, Bob Ackles and his wife, cheered for the home team and were Dan Kolesnik’s number one supporters.

The final score was 14-13 for the home team. Both Allan (‘02) and Robinson (‘02) scored over 4 goals each, lead-ing their home team to victory.

Afterwards, both teams headed to Mahoney & Sons for a post game meal and awards ceremony.

For all those budding hockey players, next years tournament is slated to have more games, allowing Vancouver College Alumni to face off against both the Varsity and Junior Varsity hockey teams. Are you up for it? We hope so, see you next year. Special thanks go to all of those who participated and: Chris Clarke, Morgan Allan, Pat Nixon, Tyler Goodwin, Greg Lynch, Steve Eivemark, Mahoney & Sons.

Old Guys Retain Title in AluMNI gRIdIRoN bATTlE

The 2008 VC Alumni Football game took place in its 24th edition on Saturday May 10th along with the Mayfair festivities.

In a twist of irony, two of the three referees were Notre Dame Graduates. However, VC Grads from 1981 to present took to the field in traditional VC colours, and live play-by-play returned to O’Hagan field for another afternoon. Some last minute player trades resulted in some young guys playing on the old guys’ team and vice versa. However, the game still started in tradi-tional fashion with the old guys scoring early as quarterback Nigel Palma ’06 scrambled over the line from two yards out for the first touchdown on the opening series. The series was largely set up by Conrad Lakowski ’82, who despite playing as a lineman during his VC days, displayed amazingly good

hands and became a regular target as he consistently caught passes in heavy coverage and finished the day with a touchdown and a two point convert.

The young guys had an effective running game, but the old guys found a way to snuff out the early drives, as Kevin Wilkie ’05, picked off a pass from Cris Marincat ’03. Wilkie featured in the subsequent scoring play, as he tucked in the ball on a pass from Nigel Palma widening the margin for the old guys to 13-0.

The young guys had an effective pass rush that forced a number of hurried passes, and a number of interceptions throughout the game. Brody McKnight ’07, used one hand to catch a 30 yard pass from Cris Marincat putting the young guys in scoring position, and Cris went right back to Brody to get the young guys on the board. Alvin Tejuco ’06, caught the one point convert pass to make the score 13-7 for the old guys.

A big play from Palma to Edgardo Pinillos ’05, set up the touchdown by Conrad Lakowski, and Mike Tchao ’05 secured the convert giving the old guys back their 13 point lead.

Alumni game regular Bill Sherrit ’88 must have found the fountain of youth, because he was wearing a young guys jersey, and he got wide open after an unscripted pick play helped him to secure a touchdown narrowing the score to 20-13.

Under pressure, Nigel Palma found Mike Tchao who scrambled for a huge 45 yard gain, and led to Mark Ramos ’00, scoring to give the old guys a 27-13 lead.

Pardeep Beesla ’05 made a big 30 yard gain, which then led to Nigel Palma getting his second running touchdown of the game and a 34-13 lead for the old guys.

The young guys continued to push late in the game, as Alexander Hernandez scored from 30 yards out, but Liam Coughlan ’81 picked off the final pass of the game securing the 34-21 victory for the old guys who, after last year’s loss, were happy that a new tradition had not begun.

The rain politely held off until the game was over, and we were able to celebrate another injury free year of col-legial activity with VC grads spanning 27 years with the t-shirts to prove it.

Special thanks again go out to game sponsors, Mahony & Sons Public House and for the volunteer efforts of Jim Canil and his kids, Stephen Eivemark ’89, Patrick Nixon ’02 and Wayne Steele and his referees.

Every year there are first time players participating in the Alumni Football Game. Next year, join us in celebrat-ing the 25th Annual Alumni Game during Mayfair 2009.

Alumni News

Sixty years ago, 3 cents bought you a 1st class stamp, 5 cents a soda or $1.50 a lift ticket at Westlake Lodge on Hollyburn Mountain. It was also the graduation year of an eclectic group of students who went on to live varied lives, yet still took every opportunity to meet socially, rekindling the bonds of brotherhood that began in high school.

The Class of 1948 celebrated their 60th reunion on June 26 & 27 at Vancouver College. For many, it was the first time back since graduating, for others the college has continued to be part of their lives as seen through the eyes of their sons and grandchil-dren who attended or are attending VC. One thing is for sure, though there have been many changes since 1948, two things haven’t changed — the strong memories and friendships created while attending Vancouver College.

All those who were able to attend enjoyed them-selves immensely. Thursday night, the alumni and guests gathered for dinner in the Alumni room at Vancouver College to muse over the good old days, recounting the memories of classmates, teachers, school activities including detentions and how they all moved on in diverse directions, yet remained true to their education. The next day, several of them attended the traditional grad brunch held each year for the new grads, staff and faculty. Jack Herb,

addressing the class on behalf of his graduating class, said “the strong Vancouver College tradition, beliefs and bonding engrained in you over the years will give you strength as you move forward. The key is to remain in touch as we have over the years, not just with your class, but with those before and after you. Semper Fidelis”

IN MEMoRIAMBrian J. Carrigan (’42) – April 5, 2008Charles W. Nash (’43) – April 20, 2008 NASH Charles W. July 24, 1917 - April 20, 2008 With great sorrow we announce that Charlie died on Sunday, April 20, 2008 in Lions Gate Hospital. He was born in Lee-on-Solent, England July 24, 1917, and came to Vancouver with his mother, Hilda and brothers in 1925. Dad was predeceased by his loving wife, Bette, and brothers Jack, John, Peter and Sandy. “Chuckie” is survived by his loving family, daughters Rita and Terre, son Paul, grandson Adrian, and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was a generous community volunteer and avid outdoorsman. His hiking boots, skis and kayak were in active use until three years ago. Charlie graduated in mechanical engineering at U.B.C. He then served in World War II as Flying Officer (Pilot) in the RCAF in Canada and England. He was a professional engineer who retired from B.C. Hydro as a Vice-President in 1981. He served as Hon. Vice-President of the National Council and Hon. President of Vancouver Coast Region, Scouts Canada; Chairman, Holy Family Hospital; Chairman of Shaughnessy Hospital and Shaughnessy Hos-pital Foundation; Board member, University Hospital; international volunteer, advisor and member of Board of Directors, CESO. He was a long-time member of St. Anthony’s Parish, West Vancouver. Charlie’s keen interest in other cultures led him to travel the world both personally and professionally. At age 73, Charlie attended S.F.U. to study Mandarin and later went to China as an exchange student. He was a member of the Vancouver Mandarin Club and his book club until age 90. For 23 years, Charlie was known as ‘Cougar’ to hundreds of West Vancouver school students to whom he taught Wilderness Survival. Charlie’s wishes are to leave flowers to grow in the wild; instead, donations may be made to Holy Family Hospital, Scouts Canada or the charity of your choice, in Charlie’s memory. Our dad’s silent suffering is finally over. We extend our deepest ap-preciation to his caregiver, Jenny, and the staff of 4-East, Lions Gate Hospital, especially Christine and Krista. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony’s Church, 2347 Inglewood Ave., West Vancouver on Friday, April 25, 2008 at 11:00 a.m.

Gordon Winter (’47) Gordon passed peacefully in his sleep at Burnaby Hospital on April 30, 2008 after a lengthy 12 year battle with cancer. Gordon was 80. It is fitting that he should spend his last days at BH as he served on the BBY Hospital Board and the Foundation Board for 18 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Cleona, daughter Beverley (Reg), son Brian, and grandchil-dren Brianne and Kristopher, stepchildren - Greg, Graham (Wendy), Grant (Joanne), Julie (Rob) and step grandchildren - Shawn (Ash-ley), Craig (Danielle), Chris (Lindsay), Elyse, Reid, Brandon, Dylan, Kerris, Erin and great-grandson Parker. Gordon is also survived by first wife Frances. A student of Point Grey, Magee High, Vancouver College and UBC Gordon had successful careers first with Firestone Tire and then Mohawk Oil Company Ltd. until he retired at 65. He continued on as a Board member with Mohawk Oil until he was 67. Gordon had many passions but his commitment to Com-munity and Charity prevailed. He was an active Rotarian (33 years) and sat on several boards until failing health prevented him from continuing. Board member positions include the PNE, Westminster Savings, BCIT, Canadian Mental Health, Canadian Diabetes Society, BC Variety Club and several more. Gordon deemed his most cher-ished work to be that of his 30 year commitment to the Salvation Army alongside his lifelong friend, Hugh Sutherland. Gordon could be found spending most of his retirement days where he was his happiest, playing the course and wandering the clubhouse of the Vancouver Golf Club. He was an active member since 1984. Gordon will be dearly missed by his family and his many friends.

Mitchell Ho was a Grade 5 student in Brother Conti’s class at Van-couver College. On April 15, 2008, during recess in the playground, Mitchell suffered a spontaneous cardiac arrest. Despite the best efforts of school officials, first responders from the Fire Hall next door, paramedics and the medical team at BC Children’s Hospital, Mitchell suffered a devastating stroke and passed away peacefully due to heart failure six weeks later. Although he did have a pre-existing heart condition, Mitchell was an extremely active young VC gentleman. He played Rep Hockey and his conduct on and off the ice was an inspiration to teammates, coaches and parents. He was the team player that could be relied upon; he was not the star player, nor did he need to be. In addition, he was keen to play basketball with his classmates and baseball with his buddies. He faced his many challenges with dignity and dedication. His heart condition mandated many painful procedures, including open heart surgery in 2003. Yet, he chose to live life at full speed, infecting all around him with his joie de vivre. He worked conscientiously in academics and in his favorite discipline of Shito-Ryu Karate. He remained humble and actively practiced his Faith, serving as altar boy at Saints Peter and Paul Parish. Mitchell’s parents Dr Stephen (’82) & Sarah Ho, brother Spencer (VC student), sister Merissa and family wish to thank the VC community, classmates, staff, friends and family for your support through this difficult time.

I’d lIKE To WElCoME ThE ’08 ClASS into the VC Alumni. You leave this school with energy, enthusiasm and the ability to choose your course and I know you will make us proud.

In April, the Ho family suffered an immense tragedy, which you can read about on the school website. I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and continue to pray for Mitchell.

On a different note and by no means on the same level, the May Fair was a huge success. The rain held off, the crowd was huge, and the raffle had some amazing prizes. The Alumni Football game turned in a hard

fought edition with victory reclaimed by the Veterans. The Alumni Basketball Tournament was, unfortunately, canceled due to low registrations. Given the tradition that has been established, I’m not sure why, but I hope that it’s just a quirk of timing. Thank you to all the organizers for their hard work and I’m looking forward to bringing it back stronger than ever next year.

You’ll also notice that our website is live again. It’s still a bit raw but Pat Nixon ’02 would be upset if I didn’t give it a plug – www.vcalumni.com. It’s an important com-munication channel and we hope you check it out. Send us your comments and let us know what you’d like to see added or changed.

I often speak of Vancouver College as a Community and that has real meaning to me. A community comes together and shares in successes, tragedies, failures, and grows stronger together from these shared experi-ences.

Students, Parents, Faculty, Alumni – we are Vancouver College.

Way back in September 2002, a quiet young hon-ours student named Toby Ng ‘03 approached staff to

resurrect the badminton team, one that had not competed since the 1970’s.

Thanks to Toby’s gentle persuasion over half a decade ago, the Van-couver College and Little Flower Academy badminton team have arisen to never-before heights in becoming one of the most power-ful high school teams in the sport every year. In 2008, VC/LFA captured their first-ever BC High School Championship after three consecutive silver medals in 2005-2007. The inaugural 2003 team with Toby as captain finished 6th at the championships. During his grad year, Toby also balanced his honours level marks in addition to representing BC in February 2003 at the Canada Winter Games.

Since graduation, Toby has continued to train and compete. While studying at Langara and UBC in 2007 Toby was chosen to team BC and carried the flag for the 2007 Canada Winter Games ceremonies in White Horse. There, he captained the squad that won the gold medal. In May 2007, Badminton BC selected Toby as the top U-23 player of the year. Toby is currently finishing studies in Human Kinetics at UBC. He is a member on Team Canada that recently won the Pan American Games. The victory qualifies Canada to play in The Thomas Cup, oft referred to as the World Men’s Team Championships.

Father Francis Ng continues to be an assistant coach to the VC/LFA badminton, and Brother Derrick (grad 2005) coached VC/LFA to their BC Championship victory this year.
