General Music
Course Summary: High School is the last opportunity for the entire student
population to experience a comprehensive music program. With this in mind, it is
my goal to provide students with the tools and knowledge needed to make and
enjoy music for the rest of their lives. This course will focus on three main areas:
music literacy, music performance, and music listening. Students will be assessed
in these areas through written and aural (listening) evaluations, and projects.
Modifications in assessment strategies will be made when necessary. Students will
have the opportunities to perform, improvise, create, read, listen to, analyze, and
evaluate music. An emphasis is placed on understanding music in relation to other
arts, and disciplines outside the arts. An understanding of music in relation to
history and culture is also a focus of this curriculum.
IL State Standards Covered in this Course: 25.A.1c Music: Identify differences in elements and expressive qualities (e.g., between fast and
slow tempo; loud and soft dynamics; high and low pitch/direction; long and short duration; same
and different form, tone color or timbre, and beat).
26.A.1cMusic:Identify a variety of sounds and sound sources (e.g., instruments, voices and
environmental sounds).
26.A.1dMusic:Relate symbol systems (e.g., icons, syllables, numbers and letters) to musical
sounds.
26.A.2d Music:Read and interpret the traditional music notation of note values and letter names.
