103 VårsøgHans Hyldbakk was Surnadal’s great poet, writer and local his-torian. He wrote among others the poem “Vårsøg” which, when set to music by Henning Sommerro, has been recog-nised as the most beautiful song in Norway. (It is difficult to explain the word in English, it is the sound of the river in spring when snow is melting, but it is also a promise of hope

and new life.)The text and melody com-bine together to produce an extraordinary ovation of burgeoning life. This ovation has a double meaning. “Vårsøg” was written in April 1945, just before the end of the Second World War.And Hans Hyldbakk experi-enced 103 springs. His love for fellow human beings was a central subject/motive for

him, both as a historian and as a poet. Nevertheless he was sometimes considered con-troversial and never portrayed himself as a man of virtue. The HeritageHenning Sommerro, a fellow inhabitant of Surnadal says,”To grow up with Hans as the King up at Kleiva inspired many of us. For instance, it showed us that it was possible to be a bit

different. He created a language and thoughts that we under-stood, and he raised our local history and those forgotten into the spotlight. My hope is that the peculiar and rare qual-ity in Hans’ poems will encour-age us to continue singing, even in future generations.”

Hans Hyldbakk(1898 - 2001)Poet, historian, journalist, philoso-pher, cosmopolitan – and trouble-maker. For 50 years he lived alone at Kleiva, high above the centre of Skei in Surnadal. His home has become a landmark in Nordmøre, and is the centre of the “Vårsøg” weekend every Whitsun.

The Surnadal Downhill centre at Sæterlia has one of the longest ski lifts in the country and downhill racing is also available in the steep Trollheimen mountains, And you can also take a peaceful tour through the enchanting white mountain landscape.

Along the mAin roAdThe stop for the express buses between Trondheim, Kristiansund, Molde and Oppdal is just outside the entrance of the Surnadal Kulturhus and the Vårsøg Hotell reception. The journey to/from any of these towns takes about two hours.
