Quick Start Guide

Using VantagePoint The following Quick Start instructions are intended for use by compatible GPS receivers (see p1 “Supported GPS Receivers”).

QUICK START The following is an outline of the basic steps to start using VantagePoint with your GPS Receiver:

Startup

1. Start VantagePoint (VP) application program by clicking on the Icon on your PC Desktop.

2. When the VP program is open, click on the Icon in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, then press Open.

3. With the Map Tab open, select the VP settings, (Area, Measure Units, North Reference, Coordinate System), etc.

4. With VantagePoint setup completed, you are ready to create waypoints and routes.

Select a Map

The following steps help you select a Background or Detailed Map:

1. Click on the (Map tab) in the Main Window. Now the Map Tools are active.

2. Open the lower Left-Panel by clicking on the (top icon).

3. Click on the Browse Maps ribbon in the Left Panel. Select a Background Map or Detailed Map (Detailed Maps are available at MagellanGPS.com for purchase).

4. The available maps will be displayed in the Left Panel window. Click on the +

(plus) box and change to a – (minus) . Now the Background Map is activated. Repeat this step to activate a Detailed Map.

Create a Waypoint

A waypoint is a set of coordinates. On land or at sea, these waypoints can mark a location and you can return to that exact location later. Set waypoints for your home and a few other key locations. Familiar waypoints shown on a map make it easier to stay oriented and mark your route when you travel. There are three ways to create waypoints: Thru Map tab, Library tab, or Planner tab. The instructions below “Create a Route”, show how to create waypoints on a map.

To create a waypoint using Library tab, use the following instructions:

1. Click on the Library tab in VantagePoint and under the option you will see (Waypoint Icon).

2. Click on this Waypoint Icon and view the screen below:

3

Page 4: Vantage Point Quick Start Guide ENG

Quick Start Guide

3. Click on the New Waypoint at the bottom of the dialog box. The following dialog box appears:

4. Enter fields: Name, Location (Lat/Lon), Comments, and add Icon and Media if you wish.

Note: Use VantagePoint Map tab, lower Status Bar to find Lat/Lon coordinates for your waypoint location. Then replace the “0s” in the “Location” dialog box with the coordinate numbers.

5. After entering the fields data, click on the Save button and save new Waypoint.

6. The Waypoints you create can be transferred to your GPS.

Create a Route

Creating a route is like “connect the dots” pictures; you place dots (waypoints) on a map, then connect the dots with a line (route). Two or more waypoints can become your route from starting point to destination. A simple day-trip, single-leg route may be best for learning to use VantagePoint and your GPS receiver. Advanced GPS users can plan and navigate complex routes.

1. Select Map Tab in VantagePoint and choose a map that shows the area you are interested in. If the Background map that comes with your VantagePoint does not show the area you will be exploring, you may have to purchase a Detailed Map. Detailed Maps are available from MagellanGPS.com or from your local retailer.

4

Page 5: Vantage Point Quick Start Guide ENG

2. Click on (Map tool) and select Waypoints.

3. Select (Planner tab) to mark your new route.

4. Click on (Create tool), now your Mouse pointer has a special tip.

5. Locate your special mouse tip on the map where you want your waypoint (starting point) and left-click on your mouse.

6. Move the mouse pointer (without lifting) to your destination point on the map and left-click the-mouse button. Immediately right-click the mouse button to terminate the route marker.

7. Now you have a marked Route and a Route dialog box with Start and Finish points.

8. Click on Calculate to obtain the route distance.

9. Click on Save to complete the Route creation.

Note: The Route dialog box contains Start and Finish waypoints and distance of travel. Transfer/Export the Route and waypoints to your GPS for your trip.

Create a Point of Interest (POI)

A Point of Interest is a location on a map. These locations can be restaurants, gas stations, parks, etc. There are two ways to create POIs: Thru Map tab or Library tab. For using Map tab, see instructions for “Create a Route”, and select POIs.

To create a POI thru Library tab, use the following instructions:

1. Click on the Library tab in VantagePoint and under the option you will see (POI Icon).

5. After entering the fields data, click on the Category and a drop-down box offers some common categories. Select one, then save new POI.

6. The POIs you create can be transferred to your GPS.

Create a Geocache

A GPS receiver and a hunger for adventure are all you need for a high-tech treasure hunt. Use your VantagePoint application software to create a “cache” or treasure hunt. Protect Functions for Firmware Update

Prior to starting firmware update, an automatic GPS data backup is performed. This is an insurance against data loss in case of GPS to VantagePoint disconnection. The data backup should include all user data such as waypoints, POIs, etc. After VantagePoint completes the backup, a confirmation popup is displayed. There are Protect Tools in the MyGPS tab menu to support recovery of user data, see below:

If any error occurs during backup, an error popup will be displayed. Select the “Yes” button to proceed with the firmware installation. Selecting “No” button will abort.

Restore Option

“Restore” button is part of the “Protect” menu under MyGPS tab. When user selects the “Restore” button, VantagePoint starts to restore GPS data (waypoints, POIs, etc.) from the previously saved location and displays a status bar popup. After VantagePoint completes the user data restore backup, a confirmation is displayed. If any error occurs during restore, an error popup will be displayed.
