    Among various actions followed for this intention,dealing with water resources has been one of the

    primary aims.

    The sheer size of the project, the Sardar Sarovar dam couldbring about some of the worst environmental destructionin India.

    If completed, several hundred square miles of forest woulddisappear, destroying precious habitat for tigers, panthers,sloth bear, barking deer, several rare tree species, andhundred of plants with medicinal potential.Local and tribal people benefit from the forest by harvestingfruits and nuts, which provide an important supplement totheir diet.

    The impact of moving hundreds of thousands of people to otherlands will also have a serious effect on the ecology of the area ofrelocation, creating a serious environmental dilemma.Threatened with the submergence of their villages, their land, andtheir forests, thousands of valley residents began to protest against theconstruction of the Sardar Sarovar and other large dams.

    The benefits out weigh the cost. Most countriesbuilding these massive projects seem to think so.

    They do produce lots of benefits, the most importantof which is energy.

    Up to 30% of the electricity generated is used for

    the industrial production of fertilizer which isneeded to keep the fields fertile.
