THE LATEST BULL!

President’s Message “ Happy New Year and

best wishes for all of our members and specialthanks to all of you volunteers without with outwhich our club would not be what it is. I would alsolike to give praise to the National Rifle Associationfor their grant money which enabled us to extend theconcrete sidewalk all the way to trap six. So keepyour membership in NRA current and come out andenjoy your self with your friends at your greatclub……” John Ginocchio

Raffle Winners: Ralph Campana was the big

winner of the raffle drawing on December 21, taking cashin lieu of the Remington trap gun. Two flats of shells

went to the 4H club courtesy of an anonymous donor, and

one flat of shells was won by John Vallerga of Napa.

Congratulations to our winners and thanks to all of youwho “supported” the raffle this year.

Token Trap Issues

Beginning February 1st

, trap six will no longer be

available as the practice trap. Those of you who want to

shoot trap on non-public days can now use trap 2. Youwill need to purchase tokens in advance from the office

on either Sunday or Wednesday.

There will be a cordless voice call set kept in the clubhouse which you will need to move out to the trap and set

up. While you are picking up the voice call set, please

sign the log sheet located on the table next to the voice

call in the club house. If you are accompanied by non-member guests please put the $10 fee in a small

envelope provided and drop it in the slot in the office

window board. Be sure the trap has plenty of targets before you start

shooting. There will be a supply of targets kept in the

trap house. Then drop your tokens in the box and go

“break ‘em all”! When you’re finished shooting, please pack up the voice

calls and return them to the clubhouse.

If you are shooting by your self you can just use oneof the “mics” and just carry it with you from post to post

rather than setting out all five speakers.

NRA According to club records, 69% of our club

members are active NRA members but some of you havejoined the NRA but have yet to advise us of your

membership number. Our goal of course is 100%. If you

are new and haven’t passed your number on to us please

do so at your earliest convenience by contacting John,Ted, or Marv via phone, e-mail, or smoke signal. If you

don’t know your NRA number and can’t find your card,

check the address label on your magazine, i.e. AmericanRifleman or Hunter or whatever.

If you are not yet a member or your NRA dues need

renewing; you may pay through the club and save $10 offthe regular membership cost. Contact John, Ted, or

Marv.

us pick one for you. But if you don't care, on the 2nd

Wed. of each month we choose work days for thefollowing month. You can always call or e-mail us with

your choice. We still need one more willing worker for

January 11th. Thanks for your help! Jan & Bill

Remember it is your responsibility to be there on yourassigned day promptly at 9 a.m. to set-up the range and

get assignments for the day. If you are unable make your

assigned date, it is your responsibility to find another

club member to replace you or pay a $50.00 fine per clubrules.

It is easier for us and better for you to pick your dates

you know you can work rather than us assigning you adate. There are 3 easy ways of signing up.

Sign up on the calendar at the clubhouse, or

Call (707) 996- 5536 or (preferred) e-mail

[email protected] As a very important last reminder, in order to

receive credit for working, you “must” sign the

work log located in the club house. Please write

the total hours worked (“all day” is not a viable

answer). PLEASE BE SURE TO PRINT YOUR

NAME LEGIBLY AND “SIGN” THE LOG TO

INSURE THAT YOU RECEIVE CREDIT FOR

WORKING!!

Components Sales

The component room hours are from 12 noon to 1pmon Sundays and Wednesdays. Due to limited availability

of shot, we are limiting purchases to 100 lbs per member

(4 bags) per month at $29 per bag. Cheddite primershave gone down again to $25 per thousand, or $125 per

case of 5,000. Fiocchi and Winchester shells will now

be $6.50 per box of 25 and $60 per flat of ten boxes of 12and 20 gauge shells.

Fire Arm & Trap Machine Safety For those of you who are new to the club or are

unfamiliar with the safe care and operating of our trap

machines, the following is a short primer on safe oper-ating procedures.

All seven of our trap machines are Pat-Traps which

cost $8000+ new. They operate on 110 volt 60 Hz A.C.electricity which powers a hydraulic motor for the servo

actuator that causes the machine to oscillate left and right

as well as up and down on the three wobble traps.

There is a switch box mounted inside the right forwardwall of the trap house with two toggle switches. The rear

switch is an on off control for the pump motor and the

front switch is the arm release control. It is a threeposition toggle switch ( up is on, down is off, and

pushing below down releases the arm to the safe

position). Caution, be sure the area in front of the trap

is clear of people, animals, or vehicles before releasing

the arm!!!

When reloading the machine, release the arm which

throws the target on the table. The red launch arm will be

visible on the left side of the machine. Place the orange

safety cone on top of the roof and slide the roof back togain entrance to the targets.

The turret consists of sixteen angle iron stacks into

which the clay targets are carefully loaded (domed sideup of course). Fully loaded, the turret holds 540 targets.

Care must be taken to avoid breaking targets during

reloading, but accidents do happen and when they do, besure to clean all the big pieces out of the center of the

turret to avoid jamming the stacks.

When reloading is complete, close the roof, place the

cone in front of the house out of sight of the trap posts, turn the release switch back on and collect the empty bird

cartons and you’re ready to shoot again.

To become better acquainted with the system, youmight ask some of the Sunday or Wednesday shooters for

familiarization and tips on its operation.

Sam Grow Our resident NRA hunter safety instructor

would like to recruit some volunteers to work asfacilitators/instructors with the Department of Fish &

Game’s various seminar programs for youngsters.

Sam is also planning some reloading seminars if thereis sufficient interest. Call Sam at (707) 638-0410 for

more information.

THE LATEST BULL!

President’s Message A time for change may be a

recent political campaign motif but here at the trap club ithas been a continuing evolution over the last year with

the addition of improvements to the trap fields, club

house, and storage and maintenance facilities. We aresteadily moving into the twenty-first century, gone are

the cash boxes on the line to sell different colored shoot

tickets, now tokens and sporting clays tickets are soldfrom the office which features an actual cash register to

help keep track of our finances and better serve you the

members. Listed below are a number of changes in our

operating procedures which I ask you to become familiarwith and please feel free to offer any suggestions or

comments. We are above all else a volunteer member

club and any help offered will be gratefully accepted…. John Ginocchio

Here’s What’s New!

Stinking Badges! Since we are selling all tokens andtickets from the office and the office people may not

always know who is or is not a member, we are asking

club members to wear their membership cardprominently displayed on their shirt pocket, vest, sleeve,

or suitable place so the office help know who the mem-

bers are. We have available in the office a small supply

of clear plastic card holders which can be pinned to yourshirt, vest, or whatever.

New Members Prior to applying for club membership, future applicants must have shot four separate public days

of either trap or sporting clays before a membership

application will be offered. We are a shot gun sports club

and this way we know the applicant is a shot gun shooter.

Rifle/Pistol Range The rifle/pistol range is still closed

except to our Law Enforcement clients. We expect tohave the range re-open at a future date but on a limited

basis i.e. two or three days a week with a qualified range-

master present.

Trap No. 6 Trap number 6 is closed for use except on

Sundays as an instructional trap for new shooters. Trap

no. 2 is the designated non-public day practice trap.

Skeet Field We regret to report that after an extended

survey, it has been determined that given the areaavailable, a skeet field would not practical. We

appreciate the work of the committee who researched the

project.

Trap Clinic Larry Marvier would like to know if anyserious trap shooters would be interested in a one or two

day trap clinic presented by Frank Hoppe. Hoppe is an

ATA champion shooter, Trap & Field magazine

columnist, and has produced excellent trap shootingvideos. The cost would be $220 for one day and $350 for

two days with an eye towards mid April (18th & 19th) as

possible dates. If you are interested, let Larry know at(415) 328-5153.

Please Sign In! When using the practice trap (#2) on

non-public days, please remember to sign in on the sheeton the table and print your name and member number

legibly so we know who’s who. If you have a guest,

please have them sign in and drop $10 in an envelope inthe slot on the office window.

Wood Cart We have a new cart to be used for haulingfire wood from the stack outside to the club house inside.

If you need to use the cart please return it to the garage

when finished.

New Members

Please welcome the following new members: Dennis

Del Grande, Melinda Harris, Benjamin Laurance, Alec

Mc Taggart, Tim Ryan, and Ronald Stepan.

means only May and June are left for you to sign up soyou don't get fined $50 for each day you didn't work. We

really need workers for Sundays to make sure the club

runs smoothly for everyone, members as well as non-

members. It only takes 4-5 hrs. of your time twice a year, not much to ask for the privilege of being a member of

VOMTC. You can sign up on the calendar in the

clubhouse, call us at 707-996-5536 or e-mail us [email protected] to sign up to work. All work

hours are on the computer making it easy to keep track of

everyone's time. Call or e-mail if you need to know thatinfo.

NOTE: We still need 4 more workers for the St. Pat's

Day meat shoot on 3/15 and 5 for the Easter meat shoot

on 4/5. On May 30th & 31st, VOMTC will host the Round

Robin competition. Many workers are needed for both

days. If you can spend a few hours at the club on eitherday to help out, please let us know.

On June 14th, VOMTC will host The North Bay

League. Lots of workers are also needed for this shoot. Thanks for everyone's help, Jan & Bill Miller

and 20 gauge shells.

Fire Arm & Trap Machine Safety For those of you who are new to the club or areunfamiliar with the safe care and operating of our trap

machines, the following is a short primer on safe oper-

ating procedures.

The red launch arm will bevisible on the left side of the machine. Place the orange

safety cone on top of the roof and slide the roof back to

gain entrance to the targets. When reloading is complete, close the roof, place the

cone in front of the house out of sight of the trap posts,

turn the release switch back on and collect the empty bird

cartons and you’re ready to shoot again.

THE LATEST BULL!

Here’s What’s New!

Round Robin: Valley of the Moon hosts the third leg ofthe Round Robin shoot on May 30 & 31. Saturday is for

VOM members and Sunday is for the visiting club

shooters.

New Members-There is a moratorium on new membersjoining the club. New members will be accepted at the

June 2nd Board of Directors meeting. Prior to applying

for club membership, future applicants must have shotfour separate public days of either trap or sporting clays

with those dates recorded by the office before a

membership application will be offered.

Rifle/Pistol Range As was mentioned in the April

newsletter, we are making progress on reopening therifle-pistol range. However and here is the “rub”, the

Board of Directors has mandated that a trained Range

Supervisor be present any time the range is open. Forthis to happen, six to eight trained “volunteers” need to

be instructed in NRA Range safety and management and

then be able donate ten to twelve hours of time per month

at the range. We are looking at three days a week (Tues., Thurs.,

Sat.) from 9am to 3pm. Rifle shooters would shoot in the

morning and pistols in the afternoon. There are a number

of new rules BUT the most important thing is if we

don’t get these VOLUNTEERS the Range

stays closed!!!! If you want to help and can donate some time, callDave Lenci at (707) 255-1992.

Trap no. 2 is the designated non-public day practice

trap. Starting on May 1st, trap 5 will also be available

for doubles shooters on non-public days.

Please Sign In! When using the practice trap (#2) on

non-public days, please remember to sign in on the sheeton the table and print your name and member number

HAPPIER TRAPSHOOTING

WITH VOICE CALLS & TOKENS By Floyd Dean

Thirty-three years ago, for me, was the golden age of

trap shooting. You had the BIG GUNS at that time.. This

was the time of the score keeper/puller; if you had a goodpuller, your score would also be good.

Now, thirty-three years later, we have the Voice Call.

All problems should be solved. It will save targets, money, reduce manpower, and eliminate slow pulls and

fast pulls. But, there is a trick to using the voice call

system. It can be frustrating unless used properly.

If you think about it and understand how the voice callsystem works you will always get a target on time and

have no need to ever curse the machine or, heaven forbid,

the poor score keeper. He is only a volunteer trying tohelp you and has no power over these electronic devices.

It is the shooter who has the absolute power of how he

or she will get a target on the voice command, ‘PULL’. I

made a little study of how this voice call system worksand I have learned that there is an adjustable time delay

in the system of say, 1 - 20 seconds, or so. Also, it seems

that the BATTERY powered units are a little slower thanthe HARD WIRED ones. I do not know how or why this

is the case. Other variables are the different trap

machines. Some are just slower than others. Sometimesthere might even be the wrong viscosity of oil in a given

unit.

Never the less, if you want to have a good shooting

experience, you may want to incorporate these simplesuggestions. You might even need to adjust your shooting

style to accommodate the voice call machine.

SCOREKEEPER

#1- SCOREKEEPER —To save targets, theSCOREKEEPER MUST NOT turn on the button until all

of the shooters are ready to shoot, call out, ‘The line is

hot’.#2- SCOREKEPER must TURN OFF the button as the

5th shooter calls, ‘pull’ and fires the 5th shot on a given

station. Call, ‘lost’

or, ‘dead’ and say, ‘change’ then read off the scores.#3-SCOREKEEPER must TURN OFF the button when

shooters are moving voice call units or changing stations.

SHOOTER

#1-SHOOTER- To get started make sure you put a coin

in the machine, and above all make sure it registers.

#2-SHOOTER- To save targets DO NOT TALK while

others are shooting. Close guns at the most opportune

time. That is, when a shooter has fired a shot. Thisespecially applies to the pump and auto shotgun.

#3-SHOOTER- To get a target right on time you do nothave to yell your head off. Louder will not help. However

it’s important that you use the most simple, strong one

word/syllable to call for the bird so the machine can

respond to your voice. And, you need a clear soundtunnel from your mouth to the microphone. A left-handed

shooter should have the unit on his or her right side and a

right-handed shooter should have it on his or her left side.Do not call pull through you gunstock.

Also, as the #1 post shooter breaks the target, if youare the #2 post shooter, YOU MUST WAIT 5 - 8 seconds

after he calls for the target before you call, ‘pull’. That is

because it takes that long for the machine to recycle and

get ready to throw another target. Again, the elapsed timebetween when Post #1 calls ‘pull’ until Post #2 calls,

‘pull’ must be a minimum of 5 - 8 seconds, period.

Some shooters use the following method to be sure that

they wait long enough for the machine to be ready.

Mount your gun when the previous shooters target eitherbreaks and the smoke cloud blows away or the target

lands in about 5 seconds. Try it you will like it.

BE SAFE AND HAVE FUN SHOOTING.

SUNDAY WORKER DUTIES

NOTE: The 5 stand shooters take care of their traps & scoring. Sunday workers may be asked to haul targets (standard or sporting clays) to the sporting clay traps. All other traps to remain open until there are no more shooters - approx. 4-5 hours.1. Bring in wood for the stove & fireplace during cooler weather days. Use and return wood cart from garage.2. Place score cards at traps 2, 3 & 4.3. Fill traps using mower/tractor from garage and small trailer kept behind garage. Traps 2 & 3 should have 12 cases of clays, traps 4, 5, & 6 should have 8 cases.

4. Set up speakers on traps 2, 3, & 4. Speakers may be

required for trap No. 5 if there are doubles shooters. 5. Score for traps #2 & #3. There must be a club member at trap #2 at all times in order to help the general public and insure that firearm safety rules are obeyed.6. When shooting is finished, lock traps up, put speakers away, No. 2 set goes in club house, and take score cards to office.7. Please properly fill out and sign work log in clubhouse before leaving.

Components Sales

The component room hours are from 12 noon to 1pm on Sundays and Wednesdays. Due to limited availability of shot, we are limiting purchases to 100 lbs per member (4 bags) per month at $28 per bag. Cheddite primers have

gone up again to $27 per thousand, or $135 per case of 5,000. Winchester shells will now be $6.50 per box of 25 and $60 per flat of ten boxes of 12 and 20 gauge shells. Fiocchi 1oz. 12 ga. shells are available at $55 per flat in #8 and #7.5 shot.

Fire Arm & Trap Machine Safety For those of you who are new to the club or are unfamiliar with the safe care and operating of our trap machines, the following is a short primer on safe operating procedures. There is a switch box mounted inside the right forward wall of the trap house with two toggle switches. The rear switch is an on off control for the pump motor and the front switch is the arm release control. It is a three position toggle switch ( up is on, down is off, and pushing below down releases the arm to the safe position). Caution, be sure the area in front of the trap is clear of people, animals, or vehicles before releasing the arm!!! When reloading the machine, release the arm which throws the target on the table. The red launch arm will then be visible on the left side of the machine. Place the orange safety cone on top of the roof and slide the roof back to gain entrance to the targets. When reloading is complete, close the roof, place the cone in front of the house out of sight of the trap posts, turn the release switch back on and collect the empty bird cartons and you’re ready to shoot again.

WORKERS’CORNER In case you all weren’t aware, along with the new

membership year which starts July 1st, comes a new

work year for those new and returning members who didnot pay to opt out of the 12 hours of Sunday work detail.

Through July, Janice Miller has been kind enough to

assign workers. Beyond that, I will be assigning the

workforce. I will attempt to contact you in person, byphone, or by e-mail. No other form of notification will be

implemented. For this reason, it is imperative that you

complete and return the personal information formincluded with your membership renewal forms. If and

when I do contact you, and you decide that you are not

available for the date I had in mind, you will be requiredto assign your own work date at that time. Only limited

exceptions will be made. If any of you have preferred

dates in advance, please contact me directly and make me

aware of your choices well ahead of time. If I am not ableto contact you as described above, a date will be assigned

none-the-less. It is your responsibility as a member to be

present on your assigned work dates to help the clubfunction in a safe and relatively effortless manner.

Failure to comply will result in a fine of seventy five

dollars per incident up to a maximum of two hundred

and twenty-five dollars per membership year. Failure to

pay the fine or fines within 30 days will result in loss ofmembership without the possibility of re-instatement. To

date, many members have aligned themselves with

V.O.M.T.C. and have not performed their roll as a

participating club member. In an effort to make and keepit fair for all members, this new approach to scheduling

will be implemented as of the beginning of the 2009 /

2010 membership year. Last but not least, the club wouldlike to extend a special thank you to all of the members

who realize the true value of what we are privileged to be

a part of and have gone above and beyond what wasrequired of them in the past. I look forward to seeing you

In Memoriam

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of founding member Jon (Jody) Ray on November 22nd after a long battle with cancer. We extend our deepest condolences to the Ray family and friends A memorial and remembrance gathering is planned for Saturday January 9th at the club. Here’s What’s New! We apologize for the sudden cancellation of the Thanksgiving turkey shoot. Our sup-plier at the last moment advised us that the price would be $.99 a pound which would have been prohibitive for both the club and the shooters. However, the Christmas meat shoot will be held as planned on December 20th with Salami and other meat prizes to be awarded. Lunch (salad, lasagna, & garlic bread) will be available and of course the raffle drawing will be held. December 5th will be the second of four PITA Multi-plex shoots, in which shooters from 22 clubs compete for four Lewis class payouts in three fifty target events. If you are not yet a PITA member, you can join at the shoot for a $10 fee. Prices are $20 per event plus a $2 CSTA fee. NEW SHOOTERS at our Sunday practice shoots are requested to join Charlie Marino at trap 6 for initial trap shooting tutoring which includes firearm safety, basic trap shooting tips, and safe trap machine loading instructions. WORKERS CORNER Thanks once again to the workforce. It’s been a particularly good month at the club. The volunteers of late have been most attentive. On the other hand, I have had a fair amount of members who have not returned my calls and or e-mails. As a result I have decided to revert to scheduling as it has been done in the past. Basically the “few bad apples” scenario is being played out. I have developed a schedule for the remainder of the club year. If you have not ful-filled your obligation to the club during the first half of the year, you should expect to receive a copy of your personal schedule in the very near future via the USPS. If I can get some help from our trusty web-master, I will also post the full schedule on the web-site. Naturally it will be posted in the clubhouse as well as on a monthly basis in the newsletter. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing you all at the range. Monte Monte Springer / Work Schedule Coordinator Telephone (707)604-7278 [email protected] Be sure to include V.O.M.T.C. in the subject line of all corre-sponding e-mails. As an important reminder: Sunday workers should be present at 8:00 A.M. to prepare the trap range. In order to receive credit for working, workers must fill in and sign the work log located within the club house on their scheduled work date. Please write the total hours worked (“all day” is not a viable answer). SUNDAY WORKER DUTIES NOTE: There is a check list outlining the duties that the Sun-day workers are responsible for that is attached to the workers log sheet in the club house. If you are scheduled for Sunday duty please read that list.
