“Reflections” By: Ill. Jeffrey J. Black, 33°

I sincerely hope you and your families will have a happy and safe 4th of July, as well as an enjoyable summer season.

This spring, we held both inside and outside Clean-up Days. We worked inside in March, and despite poor weather, we held the outside day on May 14, 2016. I wanted to extend a special “Thanks” to all the members who braved the weather that day to help keep our facility clean and attractive.

Congratulations to our newest MSA’s Sublime Princes Creighton J. Bradler and Dennis J. Elder, who received their caps and jewels in Akron on June 3, 2016. Congratulations are also in order to Sublime Princes Howard Lev and Jerome S. Jacobson who were elected to receive the MSA in 2017 at the 120th Session of OCD in Dayton.

Due to the RNC convention here in July, and based on the predictions of traffic and events surrounding the RNC, the Learning Center Graduation and Valley Scholarship Presentations has been moved from its traditional third Thursday in July to the last Thursday in June. We hope you will be able to attend as we graduate our Learning Center students and present almost $38,000 in academic scholarships.

Membership By: Ill. Edwin A. Strauss, Jr., 33°

In the world, men know Masonry only through the lives of individual Masons. So how are you doing? Are you giving the right impression to those that you come in contact with on a daily basis? Are you setting a proper example yourself, that those around you might like you and be a part of your life? We all deal with other people on a daily basis in life. If you are giving off good impressions then others might want to emulate you. This all leads to communication and exchange of thoughts between people.

You might state: “I am a Mason and proud to be one!” You can tell them the influence that it has been in your life and the wonderful friendships that you have made. Tell them about the wonderful things that you have done and enjoyed because of Freemasonry. It is pretty simple when you think about it. I have enjoyed my Masonic journey since 1967 and have no regrets at all. Membership should be the number one goal for each and every one of us. Our future and the future of our beloved fraternity rest upon it. If we do nothing about it then it shall go away and what a sin would that be.

Our Lodges need new members and the Scottish Rite Valley of Cleveland can use new members. Don't leave this most important task for "the other guy" to handle. We all need to do our part! Our Lodges and the Valley will be taking our summer break soon but you my dear Brethren, will be out and about and meeting new people on a daily basis. Set the proper example and lead them to our beloved fraternity.

Valley Holds Awards Night on June 6, 2016

On Monday, June 6, 2016, the Valley of Cleveland held its annual Awards Night, presenting Membership Medallions and Rewards as well as the 50, 60, 65 and 70 Year Service Awards.

With no Four Coordinate Bodies Meeting prior to the event, members, ladies and guests were invited in at 7:00 pm to witness the presentations. First the Membership Medallions and Rewards were presented, with Sublime Prince G. Eric Mample receiving one year’s dues for free by signing four petitions on the first line in 2016. Congratulations Eric! Next, our Chairman of the Board presented the service awards. We were fortunate to have three of our 50 Year recipients present, as well as Ill. Bro. Merlyn E. Meredith, 33° who was in attendance to receive his 60 Year Service Award.

Each member receiving an award, was encouraged to have their family members stand with them for the presentations, and upon receiving their award each member was given a chance to speak to the group regarding their lengthy Masonic histories.

We were also intending to present the Mummer of the Year award for 2015, as well as a beautiful plaque informing one of our recently retired, long serving committee chairman “Emeritus” Status, but both brothers were unable to attend. We now plan to present these awards either at a Society Meeting or another upcoming Valley event.

Valley Holds First All DVD Day

In an attempt to “think outside of the box”, and in keeping with ICE (providing programs that emphasize Inspiration, Convenience and Enjoyment, the Valley hosted its first ever All DVD Day on April 9, 2016.

The event was very well attended with over 50 members and several candidates there to witness the Degrees. Dress for the event was casual, and the Valley provided popcorn, pop and coffee. We witnessed the 4°, 6°, 12° and 24° ending at 4:00 pm, at which time we traveled to Slyman’s Tavern in Independence. At Slyman’s we had reserved a private room in advance for food and beverages.

Although the Valley is capable of performing all of these Degrees “live”, it was interesting to see our Degrees in a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. While we have no plans to make a DVD day a regular event, we will continue to utilize these recordings as in the past, by showing one or two at our Reunions to help conserve time.

Valley Holds First Shooting Range Day

The Valley of Cleveland held its first Shooting Range Day on Saturday, June 12, 2016 at the A & A Shooting and Hunting Club, 12006 Fenstermaker Road, Nelson Twp, OH. The Valley had sole use of a 300 yard outdoor range from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. The range permits the shooting of all hand guns and long guns under 50 caliber. During the course of the day, between thirty and forty members, their ladies and guests attended. The cost was $5.00/person and everyone had to provide their own targets and ammunition. Special thanks to Ill. Bro. Robert J. Homoly, Jr., 33° and Sublime Prince Johnny F. Manis who made all the arrangements for the day. Johnny also donated all the food (enough hot dogs and hamburgers to feed an army) and Bob served as Range Master, insuring the most important need of the day; safety. All the attendees enjoyed themselves, and we will plan another range day in the future.

We are still accepting tax deductible donations to the Valley of Cleveland Foundation

New Venue for the 2016 Learning Center Walk

As many of you are aware, the Cleveland Masonic Learning Center has held a walk event every year as one of its primary fund raisers for the year. The event has grown in size and scope over the years, and it is now our single largest annual fundraiser, often including the Shrine Band as well as the current Miss Ohio. The vast majority of these events were held at the Cleveland Metroparks at the pavilion on Nagy Road near the Cleveland Zoo. Unfortunately, this year, that facility was not available for us to rent on our usual date.

Therefore, the 2016 Cleveland Masonic Learning Center Walk will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the Western Reserve Masonic Community, 4931 Nettleton Road, Medina, OH with registration starting at 10:00 am., and “step off” at 11:00 am. Currently, we are planning to hold registration in the back of WRMC near the parking deck, but as the event has always been “rain or shine”, we are working on an alternate location at WRMC in the event of inclement weather. Signs will be posted on the day of the event.

We hope you will plan to attend this year’s walk, to help us raise the funds necessary to help dyslexic children. Any additional information will be published in upcoming editions of the Valley’s “Reflections”.
