The demining problem: terminology & scenarios

Land Release the process of applying “all reasonable effort” to identify or better define CHA andremove all suspicion of mines/ERW through non technical survey, technical surveyand/or clearance

Suspect Hazardous Area (SHA)

area suspected of having a mine/ERW hazard. A SHA can be identified by animpact survey, other form of national survey, or a claim of presence of explosiveArea (SHA) impact survey, other form of national survey, or a claim of presence of explosivehazard

Confirmed Hazardous Area (CHA)

area identified by a non-technical survey in which the necessity for furtherintervention through either technical survey or clearance has been confirmed

Defined Hazardous area, generally within a CHA, that requires full clearance. A DHA is normallyDefined Hazardous Area (DHA)

area, generally within a CHA, that requires full clearance. A DHA is normallyidentified through thorough survey

Non-technical Survey (NTS)

important survey activity which involves collecting and analysing new and/orexisting information about a hazardous area. Its purpose is to confirm whether thereis evidence of a hazard or not, to identify the type and extent of hazards within anyhazardous area and to define, as far as is possible, the perimeter of the actualhazardous area and to define, as far as is possible, the perimeter of the actualhazardous areas without physical intervention. A non-technical survey does notnormally involve the use of clearance or verification assets. Exceptions occur whenassets are used for the sole purpose of providing access for non-technical surveyteams. The results from a non-technical survey can replace any previous datarelating to the survey of an area.relating to the survey of an area.

Technical Survey (TS) detailed intervention with clearance or verification assets into a CHA, or part of aCHA. It should confirm the presence of mines/ERW leading to the definition of one ormore DHA and may indicate the absence of mines/ERW which could allow land tobe released when combined with other evidence

Clearance (CL) tasks or actions to ensure the removal and/or the destruction of all mine and ERW

Valeria Fabbroni, Head of Operations, 8th of May 2014 – www.fsd.ch

Clearance (CL) tasks or actions to ensure the removal and/or the destruction of all mine and ERWhazards from a specified area to a specified depth

All Reasonable Effort what is considered a minimum acceptable level of effort to identify and documentcontaminated areas or to remove the presence or suspicion of mines/ERW. “Allreasonable effort” has been applied when the commitment of additional resources
