1Vachanolsavam July 2011

When Saul was anointed by Samuel as the first King

of Israel, the Spirit of the Lord came upon him. As he

turned away to leave Samuel, God gave him another

heart; and all these signs were fulfilled that day.

When they were going from there to Gibeah, a band

of prophets met him; and the spirit of God possessed

him, and he fell into a prophetic frenzy along with

them (1Sam 10:9-10). But later Saul refuted the Word of

the Lord. So He also rejected Saul from Kingship. Saul

said, I have sinned; for I have transgressed the

Commandment of the Lord and your words, because

I feared the people and obeyed their voice (1Sam

15:24). This was the inevitable consequence of rejecting

the anointing that God had given him freely.

Elijah, realizing that Jezebel would kill him,was afraid:

he got up and fled for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah: he left his servant there.

But he himself went a day’s journey into the

wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary

broom tree. He asked that he might die. It is

enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no

better than my ancestors (1 Kings 19:3-4). Jeremiah

too complains to the Lord in his helplessness: O Lord,

you have enticed me, and I was enticed; you have

overpowered me, and you have prevailed. I havebecome a laughingstock all day long; everyone

mocks me (Jer 20:7).

In each stage of life it is necessary to make some

sacrifices to maintain the anointing. St. Paul speaks about

it this way: But I refrain from it, so that no one may

think better of me than what is seen in me or heard

from me, even considering the exceptional character

of the revelations. Therefore, to keep me from being

too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a

messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from

being too elated (2 Cor 12:7). In the same way it is

necessary to make some sacrifices even in the family and

in the life of faith to maintain the anointing. ‘My grace is

sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in

weakness.’ So I will boast all the more gladly of myweakness, so that the power of Christ may dwell in

me (2 Cor 12:9).

God blessed King David granting him abundant graces.

But he refused to make proper use of the given graces.

David, who rejected the graces and committed sin, prays

like this: Do not cast me away from your presence,

and do not take away your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain

in me a willing spirit (Ps 51:11-12).

Samuel was faithful to the Lord till the end of his life.

The boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature

and in favour with the Lord and the People (1Sam

2:26; 3:19; 7:15) From those who received greater graces

from God, God will make greater demands. Humble

yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God,

so that he may exalt you in due time (1Pet 5:6).

St. Paul reminds Timothy: I remind you to rekindlethe gift of God that is within you through the laying

on of my hands (2 Tim 1:6). Jesus says, No one who

puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the

kingdom of God (Lk 9:62). Today many people go away

from faith, spiritual life and spiritual service spheres. The

main reason for this is that they look back forgetting God.

Therefore, See to it that no one fails to obtain the

grace of God (Heb 12:15).

VACHANOLSAVAM WITH NOVELTIES

I am very happy to see that Vachanolsavam which

reaches people in 7 languages is published in this Silver

Jubilee Year with many novelties. This is a time when

Jesus Christ, the Son of God and the only Saviour, who

gives solutions to all the problems of men, should be

proclaimed through all media and therefore the services

rendered by Vachanolsavam are highly commendable.

Vachanolsavam promises to give spiritual awakening, joy

and healings to people. I pray that Lord Jesus may guide

and direct Vachanolsavam from strength to strength.

THE GLORY OF THE CROSS

The article written by Fr Joseph Thondiparambil

helped me greatly to understand more about the glory of

the Cross. Although we wear crosses in our rosaries,

golden chains and rings, many of us do not understand the

salvific mission of the Cross. The article made me

understand that the Cross becomes salvific because the

person hanging on the Cross is the Saviour and those who

accept the trials and tribulations of their lives by keeping

them together with the Cross of Jesus will transform their

experiences as salvific. The article “Families that should

Become Heaven” by Isaac Chavara, appearing in the

month of October will help any husband and wife to

reconcile their differences if they read it attentively.

SHARING VACHANOLSAVAM

I am a regular reader of Vachanolsavam. After reading

my copy I pass it on to other brethren. I pray that all writersof the articles in Vachanolsavam be blessed with greater

insights of the Word. The articles of Vachanolsavam do

help us a lot. I pray this magazine may reach greater

heights.

THE LIGHT IN US

The article entitled “The Parable of the TenBridesmaids” by Rev Dr John F. Cheriavely, appearing in

the February 2011 Vachanolsavam, was exemplary. This

article teaches us to sanctify ourselves and to make sure

the lamp of grace in us does not extinguish. Therefore

let’s wait for the coming of Jesus with due preparations.

4 Vachanolsavam July 2011

Once again we are celebrating the feast of St.

Thomas, the Apostle of India. His greatest asset was his

unflinching faith. The greatest proclamation of faith “My

Lord, My God” (Jn 20:28) came from his lips. His greatness

lies in the fact that he was ready to sacrifice his life for

imparting his faith to many others. The words St Thomas

spoken when the Jews planned to kill Jesus show hisexemplary courage. “Thomas, who was called the Twin

said to his fellow disciples, “Let us all go, that we may die

with him” (Jn 11:16). The fact that St Thomas chose Kerala,

India, which is quite far from his home itself shows his

bravery and adventurous nature.

Let this feast of St Thomas help us to think seriously

about our evangelization mission. In the present

circumstances, where the Universal Church is stressing

new evangelization processes, this becomes more relevant.

Apart from India St Thomas proclaimed the Word in Sri

Lanka and many other countries in West Asia, leading

many people into faith. Following his model, we should be

ready to teach our fellow human beings about Christ and

his Gospel. That is the need of today.

The Church is a fellowship of the faithful who have

been asked to tell others about the Gospel by practically

living it. “Beginning from the baptism of John until the day

when he was taken up from us –one of these must become

a witness with us to his resurrection”. The order of Jesus

was to inform the whole world about the Gospel. He said

Fr Dr Jose Kottayil

ST THOMAS AND

THE EVANGELIZATION MISSION

As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion,

kindness, humility, meekness, and patience(Colo 3:12).

to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the good news

to the whole creation. The one who believes and is baptized

will be saved; but the one who does not believe will be

condemned”. Listen carefully to what Jesus told his

apostles before his ascension into heaven: “You will receive

power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you

will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and

Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). We get

strength for our evangelization work from the Holy Spirit

and through the living presence of Jesus till the end of

ages. “When the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you

into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will

speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the

things that are to come” (Jn 16:13). “Teach them to obey

everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I

am with you always, to the end of the age” (Mt 28:20).

Gospelist Luke presents very clearly the purpose of

the coming of Jesus. “The spirit of the Lord is upon me,

because he has anointed me to bring good news to the

poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives

and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go

free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (Lk 4:18-

19). The Church, which is the continuation of Christ, must

do these things. That is Evangelization.

Today we live in a world which is a mixture of light

and darkness. On the one hand wealth, luxury, consumerism

and prodigality are on conspicuous display. On the otherhand we find poverty, hunger, spiritual pauperism and crises

in faith. Although cultural interaction and the

interdependence of people are increasing because of

migration from one part of the country to another, and even

from one country to another, terrorism and violence are

casting their horrendous shadows every where. Studies

show that in the Kerala set-up religious values do not take

deep roots in the personal lives of people. One even

suspects that many people are using religion for their private

needs and self aggrandizement

During religious celebrations greater importance is

given to the material show off, glitter and glamour. Even

Sacramental celebrations degenerate into mere social

functions. In many places social values and human relations

are grossly neglected. Many people are not reluctant to

bend, ignore or even break family values and natural and

moral codes when they do certain things.

All these point out to the necessity of a new

evangelization. Pope John II and Pope Benedict XVI

pointed out that this new evangelization is more necessary

in places where Christian faith has been traditionally

existent (The Laity, 34). This is necessary because the

Gospel has not been received in a proper manner and

because the Christian formation of individuals, families and

societies is not done in an appropriate manner. What is

needed is the retrieval of the true Christian spirit. Jesus

Christ is the centre of Christianity. “Peter, standing with

the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, Men of

Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to

you, and listen to what I say” (Acts 2:14). Apart from him

who is the true God and true man, there is no Gospel

message. “When the crowds saw it, they were filled with

awe, and they glorified God, who had given such authority

to human beings” (Mt 9:8). Real evangelization consists

of finding Jesus who gives new meaning and clear guidanceto life and presenting him before others. We should think

carefully to see if our life is deliberately leading us to Jesus

the person. Jesus went away after doing all kinds of good

things. He shared the pains and troubles of many others.

He gave them healing, solace and life. This is precisely

what we should do today personally and socially.

Evangelization means that.

Evangelization should take place in words as well as

deeds. Jesus was a strong prophet in words and deeds. It

is the mission of the entire Church. Even good Christianstell others about the Gospel only by using words. They do

that because they are not aware of the real mission which

underlies all Evangelization work. It is here that we should

remember the words of St. Peter. “You are a chosen race,

a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order

that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called

you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Pet 2:9). It

is something that the Laity should carry out in this open

wide world. It is when we try to spread the Gospel and

carry it out in the family, society and political, financial andindustrial spheres that the Kingdom of God that Jesus

wanted will get established. For example, family members,

especially parents have a duty to hand over the faith to

their children. The second Vatican council reminds us that

when we do such a thing family becomes a home church

(Catholic Church, 11, Laity Mission, 11). Let us especially

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentleand humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls (Mk 11:29-30).

remember that when parents live in faith and hand it over

to their children, they are carrying out the missionary work.

The Church today teaches very clearly the different

levels of Evangelization. Things like Proclamation of the

Gospel, Catechism, Liturgy, Sacramental life, popular piety,

testimony by living a Christian life, just and upright dealings

are part of Evangelization (Evangelii Nuntiandi 17,21).TheChurch teaches that endeavours to make a world, where

love and righteousness reign and competing against social

evils is Evangelization. The Church also exhorts Christians

to build a world which is more humane. Do we consider

this thing seriously? We also must think if it would be

appropriate for Christians in involving themselves in

businesses which are not in keeping with human welfare.

These businesses include alcohol, gold, luxury items and

money lending institutions which charge exorbitant interest

rates which are popularly called “Blade Companies” in

Kerala.

There are three things which are essential for

Christian life: 1. The Word, 2. Sacraments, 3. Acts of

charity. Works of charity consist of revealing the Gospel

truths to the poor. If hunger, decease, pain and tears of our

brethren do not touch us and bother us, we can’t say that

we are doing proper Evangelization. There is a traditional

story which has been allegedly told by St. Thomas in which

a person distributes to the poor people the money entrusted

to him to build a palace and thus builds the palace in heaven.

This story reveals the essential feature of real

Evangelization.

We received faith from St. Thomas and as such we

have a responsibility in the world Evangelization mission.

Our huge presence all over the world through emigration,

the ubiquitous presence of our priests and nuns all over

the world, our powerful youths, our rrenewal experience,

etc. compel us to radiate the Evangelization spirit

everywhere. On the feast of St. Thomas let us take a

pledge to work in unison for this great Evangelization

Mission.

My husband underwent a thyroid surgery. The biopsy showed that malignancy was setting

in and he began to take antidotes. The doctor said that there would be a need to test again after

6 months and medication would have to be continued. We prayed tearfully to the Lord for a cureand pledged our testimony in Vachanolsavam. In the test after 6 months the doctor said that he

was fully healed and there was no need to take further medicine. Thank you, Jesus!

My wife had been suffering from different deceases. Even when she walked a small distance

she would feel her left side was getting paralyzed. On consulting the doctor, we were told she

was afflicted with some kidney ailment. The blood vessels to the kidneys were getting contracted.

Different medicines were taken to contain the problem. But nothing helped. Apart from this

above affliction, on her left foot a bone was growing. This made walking almost impossible for

her. The doctor recommended surgery. All this time we were praying tearfully to the Lord. We

pledged our testimony in Vachanolsavam on cure. Our faith proved fruitful. She was completely

healed. In gratitude to God I actively take part in the Vachanolsavam distribution services.

Thank you, Jesus!

During the Passion and suffering of our Lord we see

very meaningful but eloquent silence. Even when his

enemies drag him after arresting him, flagellate him, crown

him with thorns, hit him, spit on him, ridicule him and nail

him to the cross, he doesn’t speak a word. From his lips no

lamentations or pleas for mercy come out. He doesn’t

make any request like, “Please don’t beat me, don’t kill

me, be compassionate, please leave me, etc.” As prophet

Isaiah says, he kept silence like a Lamb being led to

slaughter or like a sheep standing before the shearers

(53:7).

There is a vast difference between our attitude and

the attitude of Jesus who remains calm and cool even

amidst all the animosity, tribulations and suffering. Many

of us spend our lives mourning and weeping, accusing

others for our troubles, crying loud and in despair. When

others see us in our pathetically deplorable state, we become

a burden and eye-sore for them. But those who suffer

patiently give others a lot of comfort and solace. When

Pilate saw the silence and calmness of Jesus, he was

dismayed: “Pilate therefore said to him, ‘Do you refuse to

speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release

you, and power to crucify you?’” (Jn 19:10). We should

be able to give a good model to others even when we are

struggling in the cauldron of pain and suffering.

What is the meaning of this silence of Jesus? Oncehe said, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for

I am gentle and humble in heart” (Mt 11:29). What is

meekness? Who is meek? The one who doesn’t get angry

when provoked is meek. In our everyday lives we

encounter frequent occasions to get angry because of

external stimulations and provocations. For example, when

others laugh at us, ridicule us, trouble us and provoke us in

different ways or when we are afflicted with deceases,

trials and tribulations or when we face serious crises, we

tend to become angry. On those occasions we scream

and shout and become infuriated. One who can keep his

equanimity and calmness is the one who is meek. He

doesn’t react on such occasions but only responds.

Reactions are done by machines. Persons respond. When

we switch on the motor for pumping water, it begins to

pump. When we switch on the tube light it begins to shine.

Machines work, react according to external stimuli. But

persons respond deliberately. We have heard the story of

Gandhiji. When a whiteman in South Africa kicked Gandhiji

with his boot, Gandhiji asked him calmly, “Is your foot hurt?”

The words of Ganhiji are a good model for the deliberate

responses of people. When others provoke us by taunting

us or physically abusing us, we often roar like lions and

pounce upon them and then we are reacting like machines.

Very often it is not possible for us to respond deliberately

in a way befitting persons. Although our Lord had all the

stimuli and provocations to get angry, he kept utterly silent

without even uttering a word. It means he had completeauthority and control over his feelings, emotions and life.

The boldest man is one who has conquered himself. “One

who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and one

whose temper is controlled than one who captures a city”

(Pro 16:32). If that is the case we can undoubtedly say

that the person who exercised the greatest self control is

none other than our Lord Jesus.

Meekness is not helplessness, indifference or inability

to react. When needed a meek person will also respond

strongly. Our Lord Jesus is not a mere meek Lamb butalso the roaring Lion of Israel. To know this we should

know how Jesus cleansed the temple That day Jesus drove

out the merchants from the temple not because of a sudden

emotional outburst. It was an act he carried out deliberately

with the backing of others. In MK 11:11 we read it. “Then

he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when

he had looked around at everything, as it was already late,

he went out to Bethany with the twelve”. When Jesus

saw how injustice, corruption and exploitation of the poor

were rampant during the time allotted to the Gentiles inthe Jerusalem temple, he was infuriated and flamed with

anger. Because on that day it was evening time, he couldn’t

do anything and so he went back to Bethany. The next

day he brought with him more people and ousted the culprits.

Many renowned Biblical scholars say that even a meek

person like Jesus roars like a lion.

What is the thing revealed by the anger of Jesus?

Psychologists say that by looking at how a man gets

provoked you can find out the value he cherishes most.

What is the biggest point revealed through the anger of

Jesus? The Gospel gives two interpretations regarding his

anger. According to John his anger is caused because of

his intense love for the House of His Father. “He told thosewho were selling the doves ‘Take these things out of here!

Stop making My Father’s house a marketplace!’ His

disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal for your

house will consume me.’” (Jn 2:16-17). But according to

the Gospel of Mark what is revealed through the anger of

Jesus is his love and compassion for his brethren. “He

was teaching and saying, “Is it not written, ‘My house

shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But

you have made it a den of robbers’” (Mk 11:17). In the

Jerusalem temple different places were allotted for the

Jewish men, for the Jewish women and also for the

Gentiles. It was in the place allotted to the Gentiles where

merchandise was brought and sold. That way, the Gentiles

were denied the right to pray. It was when Jesus saw this

He became angry and ousted the traders. That means

Jesus was angry for the glory of the Father and for the

welfare of men. Jesus will be angry if somebody irks God

and man. But if Jesus himself is provoked he will keep

silent. The anger for the glory of God and the welfare of

man is righteous and legitimate anger. However, our anger

when our selfishness is affronted is sinful anger. WhenJesus had received wounds in his body he never became

angry. He suffered all the torture and torment in utter

silence. Thus in the silence of Jesus what we see is

unselfishness. From our anger what is seen is wounded

selfishness. The Lord Jesus did not scream and explode

into anger during his Passion and suffering because he

deeply loved even his adversaries. Only one who loves

can wait. Even when her child sitting in her lap is angry

with its mother and pinches her and hits her on the face,

she suffers it patiently. She does that because she lovesher child intensely. “Love bears all” (1 Cor 13:7). Only

when we love others deeply we can forgive their trespasses

and act in a calm, cool and composed manner. In short

what is revealed through the silence of Jesus is his self-

control, unselfishness and his deep love for men. It is these

three versions that should rule the life of each one of us.

MIRACULOUS HEALING ON FIRM FAITH

My husband had been suffering from tonsillitis for the last 12 years. Once, a surgery was

carried out. After that nearly every month he used to develop throat pain, fever and cold,

making him visit different hospitals for treatment. Although various medicines were tried, his

ailment continued to distress him. Once when his throat pain became unbearable we all prayed

tearfully to the Lord and pledged our testimony in Vachanolsavam on his cure. Miraculously

my husband was healed. Since then he hasn’t had throat pain until now. We strongly believe

that if we pray with faith, the Almighty will make everything possible for us. Thank you Jesus!

Human life is a bundle of relations. It is when

relations are sincere and strong a person’s life becomes

happy and contented. None of us lives for himself alone.

None of us dies for himself alone. One’s value and

greatness are determined by his relationship with God and

other human beings. The more sincere, deeper and spiritual

a person’s relationship with others is, the higher will be his

personal nobility.

Mutual relationship existing in the early Christian

community was very deep and innocent. All the peopleloved one another and shared everything equitably among

themselves. Communities formed this way led many others

to embrace Christian faith. We see the greatness of their

sincere mutual relationship. “Now the whole group of those

who believed was of one heart and soul, and no one claimed

private ownership of any possessions, but everything they

owned was held in common” (Acts 4:32).

Relations that get loose

We saw that relations in the past generations were

pure and holy. But today the links or relations have become

weak because of material progress, influence of the media

and business attitude. The greatest curse of today is that

human relations are getting loose and temporary. Along

with that the relationship with God is also changing. Years

ago the celebrations in our home were capable of

concretizing mutual relations and love. But today a stage

has reached when people feel if they have enough money

they do not require the love, cooperation and assistance

from others. Today even for homely celebrations we

depend on the catering services. For our financial needs

we rely on banks. To pass our time we have the T.V and

the Internet. Then why do we need good neighbourly

relations or good friends?

Our society is plunging headlong into a great peril.

Selfish desires, egotist attitudes and greed for wealth have

spoiled our relations. The thinking that others are for my

use is selfish. Very often the warps and webs of family

relations get broken because of small carelessness or

mistakes.

BROKEN RELATIONS AND

GROWING SELFISHNESS

The Poverty of Loneliness

“The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes

and withers; the heavens languish together with the earth”

( Is 24:4). In the human society, lack of mutual relations or

becoming lonely is nothing but poverty. Pope Benedict XVI,

in his encyclical entitled “Love is Truth”, says that loneliness

is the image of the most intense poverty. Not being loved, withdrawing into oneself, feeling that one is a stranger in

this world, etc. make a person lonely and poor. God at the

time of creation felt sad at the loneliness of Adam and that

is why he created Eve and gave her to him as his helpmate.

The fuel for a man’s life is got from healthy and abiding

relations. If relations break up, there will be heart breaks.

The feeling that we have nobody will definitely make us

depressed.

Jesus the Source of Good Relations

The basis of all our relations is that we all are one inJesus. “Now you are the body of Christ and individually

members of it” (1 Cor 12:27). It is only on the basis of

Jesus, the only Saviour, that deep, sincere and abiding

relations can be formed, developed and maintained. We

are the branches that are joined to Jesus, the

Vine (Jn 15:5). The branches, without the

lifeblood supplied by the vine, cannot maintain

mutual relationship.

The God of the Bible is the God of relations.

During his public life Jesus had maintained closerelationship with princess and paupers, males

and females. Among them there were sinners,

Pharisees, tax collectors and even women of

loose character. Throughout the Bible we see

that when a man loses proper relationships with

God and his brethren, divine blessings dry up

for him. When Cain breached his relationship

with his own brother Abel, by murdering him,

God asked him, “Where is your brother Abel?

(Gen 4 : 9).

The Springs of Divine Graces

“He sustained him in a desert land, in a

howling wilderness waste; he shielded him,

cared for him, guarded him as the apple of his

eye. As an eagle stirs up its nest, and hovers

over its young; as it spreads its wings, takes

them up, and bears them aloft on its pinions”

(Deut 32:10-11). It is when our relationship with

our brethren is pleasing to God, divine graces

flow into us. According to Christian spirituality

it is not possible for a person to come near God without

maintaining proper relationship with his brethren. In the

parable of Rich Man and Lazarus, the rich man loses the

Heavenly Kingdom, because he had severed relationship

with his brother. When Zacchaeus became ready to weld

the links that were broken, Jesus was ready to go to his

house to give him and his home salvation. The prodigal

son severed his relationship with his family and straightaway plunged himself into the mire of ruin. Many people

realize the value of relationship only when they are

precariously poised at the precipices of crises.

There is a great truth we ought to remember. It is in

the fertile soil of loving relationship the seeds of divine

blessings germinate and grow. When we are in relationships

we are willing to carry the crosses and share whatever

we have. When the links of love, which forgives everything,

are welded we see that the lost joy and peace will return.

Let each Christian try to establish deep and pure

relationship with his parents, partner, children, siblings,

neighbors and colleagues. It is the abundance of such

relations that make the earth a Paradise.

GOD ANSWERS OUR PRAYERS

.

When my daughter-in-law was 6 months pregnant, a scan was done. The doctor said that the

tearfully to the Lord as we did not want to terminate the pregnancy. We pledged our testimony

on everything happening normally. Our prayers were heard and the doctor was proved wrong.

We got a bouncing baby boy. Thank you, Jesus!

a doctor. Tests run on him showed that his kidney was malfunctioning. So we returned to

Kerala, our home State. All the relatives and friends prayed for my husband. We also pledged

our testimony in Vachanolsavam. Further tests showed that his kidney functioned normally.

He was able to go back in time and rejoin his services. Thank you, Jesus!

sputum. My brother was in serious distress. We prayed and pledged our testimony on cure. As

a result the tube could be removed and he could eat through the mouth. Thank you, Jesus!

“By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into

a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from

the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable,

undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you who are

being protected by the power of God through faith for a

salvation ready to be revealed in the last time” (1Pet 1:4).

Through Jesus, who was born two thousand years ago

and died on the cross for our salvation and resurrected on

the third day, all the people who believe in Him are assuredof eternal life. Placing our hope in Jesus is not merely for

the life on earth but for the eternal life.

Because of him you believe in God because He raised

him from the dead and glorified him. This way your faith

and hope lie in God (1 Pet 1:21). This life is a journey.

Whenever we undertake a journey, we will have a clear

idea of our destination. So we must have hope of eternal

life at the end of our mortal journey. For that let us look at

the Lord who said, “I am the way, the truth and the

life” (Jn 14:6). When we gaze at Jesus and proceed, his

ways will become clear for us and we will become heirs

to the Kingdom of Heaven.

“The Lord is my portion, says my soul, ‘therefore

I will hope in him.’ The Lord is good to those who wait for

him” (Lam 3:24-25). Let us live relying fully on Jesus,

especially when we pass through troubles, tribulations,

diseases and other crises that torment us. Let us place all

our tears and our sufferings as repentance for our sins

along with the Passion and Crucifixion of Jesus.

Foreseeing the sufferings he is going to face, Jesus

prays at Gethsamane. At this time, to give him strength, an

JESUS – HOPE IN SUFFERING

Vachanolsavam July 201116

The Lord is faithful in all his words, and gracious in all his deeds. The Lord upholdsall who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down (Ps 145:13-14).

angel descends from heaven. We read this in the Gospel

of Luke. When we pass through sufferings, think of Jesus

who is praying at Gethsemane and this will give us strength.

We place our hope in Jesus who is betrayed by Judas, one

of his own twelve disciples. We see Jesus questioned

before Pilate, whipped by soldiers, a thorny crown pressed

on to his head, carrying the Cross and meeting his dearmother during his walk to Calvary. We see him nailed to

the cross and finally giving up his life in extreme agony.

Jesus knows the depth of our troubles, torments and tears.

Jesus lived like men except commiting sin and so when

we pray to him we will get answers from him.

We should proceed on our way of life always gazing

at Jesus who is the Lord of our faith and who will bring it

to fruition. He did not mind the ridicule and insults showered

on him and accepted the cross patiently. He was placed at

the right hand of the throne of God (Heb 12:2).ALL SUFFERINGS HAVE GLORY

Jesus resurrected on the third day of his death and

entered into glory. Let us not lose hope when we face

crises in our lives. Instead of feeling puzzled and

flabbergasted when a problem comes up we should look

on Jesus with hope. “I have said this to you, so that in me

you may have peace. In the world you face persecution.

But take courage; I have conquered the world” ( Jn 16 :

33).

When a child walks with his father, he doesn’t get

afraid even if the place is strange or however distant it

might be. He is not afraid because he knows his father, his

protector, is with him. Even if he stumbles his father will

be there to support him. If he cries his father will wipe

away his tears. The child has such a conviction. In the

same way when we repose our faith in Jesus and proceed,

Jesus will lead us along the right way. “In this you rejoice,

even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various

trials, so that the genuineness of your faith- being more

precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire”

(1 Pet 1: 6-7). It is when we have full faith, we can have

hope. Through faith we get the guarantee that we will get

what we hope for.

“Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the

conviction of things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors

received approval” (Heb 11:1-2 ). The faith of our

forefathers can be seen through many examples in the

Old Testament. It was because of his faith that Abraham

embarked on the journey as soon as he was asked to do so

to reach the place which was given as his right and reached

the place God had promised. In the same way Sarah,

Abraham’s wife believed that she would give birth to a

baby as it was said by God. In spite of her advanced age

she believed in God’s words. They had generations as

numerous as the stars in the sky and the sand on the sea

shore. It was faith that made Noah build the Arc and placed

his family and a pair of all living things in it.. When the

water went down after the Deluge, Noah and his family

and the pairs of the living things emerged from the Arc

and multiplied and prospered on the earth as per the word

of God. When we understand the depth of their faith and

witness the blessing that came as a consequence of their

faith, we will be convinced that we too will get what we

hope for in our lives. Even if we have to wait patiently, weshould have the firm faith that we will never be abandoned

by God.

Our hope is in the Lord who said that he has written

our names on his palms (Is 49:16). Very often when we

pass through tribulations and torments, our minds get upset

thinking when we would be freed from our miserable plight,

how long we will have to suffer and we have been

abandoned by everyone. On such occasions we must turn

to Jesus. When we meditate upon the Word we will hear

God’s voice and then we will experience the love andcompassion that God will have for us and get the kind of

peace that no one else can give.

The Word says, “Be still, and know that I am God!”

(Ps 46:10). Remember the times in the past when God

came to our rescue in response to our prayers. On all such

occasions God had lent his helping hand to us and he will

show us the same love in future, too. For that we have to

rely fully on God, worship him constantly and thank him

profusely for all the blessings he had given. The Saturday

after Good Friday was a time of waiting. Jesus resurrected

on the third day. That resurrection gives hope in our lives.

The strength to suffer pains, the hopeful waiting for glory

and the healing, will bring us peace and joy at the end of it

all.

Gospelist Matthew describes the incident of Jesus

going to the mountain to pray whereas the apostles got

into their boat and tried to reach the other side of the river.

Because of adverse weather and mountainous waves, the

apostles could not row their boat easily. They were tired

after hours of hard work of rowing the boat. Jesus, who

knew the trouble his apostles were in, walked over the

water and reached them. The moment Peter recognized

Jesus, he said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to

you on the water” (Mt 14:28). Jesus responds to Peter’s

request by saying, “Come.” What takes place there is a

real miracle. We see Peter coming out of the boat and

stepping on to the water and moving towards Jesus. In

Peter we see the strength of faith which allows him to

walk on water, looking at Jesus. Peter does something that

no ordinary mortal can do. Peter did not even notice the

inclement weather or the huge waves when he gazed

steadily on Jesus. But the moment, his gaze faltered, Peter

got afraid. He began to sink in water. Then he cries to the

Lord to rescue him. Jesus extends his hand and rescuesPeter. Jesus then asks him, “You of little faith, why did you

doubt?” (Mt 14:31). When Peter fully believes in Jesus

and begins to walk, a miracle happens. But the moment

his attention was diverted to the blowing wind, Peter began

to sink.

In our lives also we face adverse circumstances. At

such times we should have full faith in Jesus and proceed

with our lives gazing fixedly on the Lord and then we willget the necessary strength to overcome our problems. If

we are strong in our faith, Jesus will definitely take us

across the perilous seas of our life.

Let us pray for the grace to dedicate each moment

of our life to Jesus. Let us firmly believe that Jesus is with

us in our tragedies and triumphs, sorrows and successes.

“Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is

the Lord. They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending

out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat

comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear

fruit” (Jer 17:7-8).

Alcoholic abuse has become a canker that has been

eating into the vitals of the modern society. God tells: “Wine

is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led

astray by it is not wise” (Pro 20:1). Today, however, we

have transformed alcohol into a symbol of status and

nobility. Alcohol makes people brutes and an alcoholic

makes the family a hell. The problems and crises created

by alcoholism and related issues are rocking many families

and society.

Alcoholics do not consider drinking as a sin. Many

people think like this – Everything in the world has been

created for the enjoyment of man. But God has never

allowed his children to indulge in the lusts of people. “Ah,

you who rise early in the morning in pursuit of strong drink,

who linger in the evening to be inflamed by wine” (Is 5:11).

India has now turned into a den of toddy shops, bars

and outlets selling alcoholic beverages. It has become a

land of rowdies, underworld goons and social miscreants.

Although Indians boast of their values for tradition, they

drink so much that people from other countries stand aghast

at our love of drinking. We are steadily moving into an

eddying whirlpool of disaster. Against this, God gives us

timely warning: “Do not look at wine when it is red, when

it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly. At the last

it bites like a serpent, and stings like an adder” (Pro 23:31-

32).

Recently our President Mrs. Pratibha Patil told that

India has become a land of drunkards. The entire nation

heard her indictment with bowed heads. In spite of knowing

that alcoholism would wreak havoc on our home, society,

wealth and even self respect, we plunge ourselves into

ruin very much like a butterfly trying to befriend flames.

What a deplorable state of affairs!

We spend more money for alcohol than on food. Most

of the road accidents are the results of drunken driving. If

we look into the cases of divorce, we find the main reason

for divorce is alcohol abuse. As alcohol abuse increases inthe country the number of mental patients also increases.

People with liver and heart diseases are also on the

increase in India. Assaults on women and sexual

perversions are also on the rise. We find all these crimes

and atrocities are the results of our culture of increased

alcoholic abuse and misuse.

Some people justify themselves by asking what is

wrong with taking an occasional drink. Some people justify

their drinking by saying that they do that just to get some

relief after carrying out all their responsibilities. Suchpretexts of drinking are not good for a good Christian. God

wants us to live a life that is appropriate for the day,

abandoning our love of luxury and desire for drinks (Rom

13:13).

It is shocking to find that many school and college

going students use alcohol and other psychedelic drugs.

What will happen to our country if our children, who are

the future promises behave in such a manner? 70% of the

youths, 32% of the boys, and 31% women use alcohol in

India and these are indications of some future catastrophethat can befall our motherland. Today it is the money of

tears that fills the Treasury, swells Party funds and lines

the pockets of crooked politicians.

Our beloved Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi,

said that if he could get an opportunity to rule India as a

Despot for sometime, the first thing he would do is to close

down all the liquor outlets in India. Mahatma Gandhi said

that he knew that alcoholism is the worst decease that

affects the poor families of India. He had realized people

get into the debt traps and quarrels increase in the familybecause of their drinking habits.

Alcoholism destroys the health and sanctity of our

body. It throws to the wild winds our nobility and

respectability. What is displayed on the label of the bottles

and on the boards of the shops selling alcohol? Isn’t it,

“Drinking alcohol is injurious to health?” I should realize

that the alcoholic drink I take is injurious to my health, my

family and my soul. We should realize our mistakes and

give up drinking. “Flee from sin as from a snake; for if you

approach sin, it will bite you. Its teeth are lion’s teeth, and

can destroy human lives” (Sir 21:2).

God asks us, “Don’t you know that you are the temple

of God and the Holy Spirit dwells in you? “If anyone

destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person. For

God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple” (1 Cor 3:17).

Our bodies are temples of God. When we soil our bodies

with alcoholism, we are actually pouring dirty water into

the temple of God. All acts against our body, status and

health are indeed sins. Any act that destroys the nobility

and purity of the body is a sin. We should have this

knowledge and conviction.

In the beginning, God created the sea, land, sky and

the planets of the universe. In his infinite wisdom he made

a small spot for himself with his own hands – that is the

human body. So, the human body is God’s own. It is a

home where God dwells (1 Cor 3:15).

If at any time we have spoiled the home of God, our

body, with alcohol, we should wash and clean it as soon aspossible. Let us return to Our Lord. We stumbled because

of our inequities. Let us go back to the Lord, confessing

our transgressions. Let us request him to take away all

our inequities (Hosea 14:1-2).

We should realize that we too have a responsibility to

save our land from the culture of death that is brought in

by the misuse of alcohol. We should break away from the

shells of cowardice that are enveloping us. For the coming

generations, for the children not yet born (Ps 78:6), let us

work so that there should be an abundance of life in thevalleys foreshadowed by death and the plains of tears.

I was HIV positive. I prayed to the Lord tearfully and pledged my testimony in

Vachanolsavam. My good Lord healed me. Thank you, Jesus!

“ Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord

your God commanded you, so that your days may be long

and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord

your God is giving” (Deut 5:16). Parents who cooperate

with God in the act of creation deserve the primary place

in the family. Therefore the act of creation should be

consummated in a state of grace and mutual love. It is not

from the body but from the spirit a child is born. Therefore

children are not of the parents but of the God. “Sons are

indeed a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of womb a

reward” (Ps 127:3). Instead of insisting that the children

should be like the parents, let them grow like the children

of God. “What does the one God desire? Godly offspring”

(Mal 2:15). Children who look to the father should see in

him divine fatherhood. Parents and children are bonded

together by love and blood relationship. Parental relations

are very close to Divine relationship.

1. Generations are blessed through the Parents

Jacob blesses his twelve children by foreseeing the

divine scheme regarding them. Divine decisions are

conveyed through parents. The relationship between the

parents who give the blessing and the children who receive

the blessing should be strong. The history of Jacob and

Esau is the story of the competition between them to get

the blessing from the father by pleasing him. Only into

children who obey their parents blessing will flow freely. “

For a father’s blessing strengthens the houses of the

children, but a mother’s curse uproots their foundations”

(Sir 3:9). It is good to make an examination to find out

THE DIVINE RELATIONSHIP

BETWEEN PARENTS AND CHILDREN

whether behind the problems and crises faced by some

children, there is a lack of blessings from parents. “If in

bitterness of soul some should curse you, their Creator

will hear their prayer” (Sir 4:6). This might be the reason

for some families not achieving success in spite of their

strenuous endeavours. In order not to bring up the tears of

parents before God, children and parents should forgive,

bless and love one another and pray earnestly. If the parents

don’t do that their children will never be successful. “Her

children will not take root, and her branches will not bear

fruit”(Sir 23:25).

Parents – the Spokespersons of the Generation

Parents are not mere father and mother of just a

child or two, but of an entire generation. Only when there

are model couples there will be children who would be

upright. The defects and character traits of parents can

be seen throughout their progeny. Parents who are alcoholand drug addicts, who spend their days in bickering and

fights, whiling their time in idle pursuits and spend their

wealth prodigally are destroying their progeny. “The

children of sinners are abominable children, and they

frequent the haunts of the ungodly. The inheritance of the

children of sinners will perish, and on their offspring will

be a perpetual disgrace” (Sir 41:5-6). If children don’t obey

and respect their parents, they should examine themselves

to see if there was any deficiency in their children’s

upbringing. “Is it not enough for you to feed on the goodpasture, but you must tread down with your feet the rest

of your pasture? When you drink of clear water, must you

foul the rest with your feet? And must my sheep eat what

you have trodden with your feet, and drink what you have

fouled with your feet?” (Eze 34:18-19).

The Duty of Parents

Couples have accepted the responsibility of bringing

up their children in the sacramental ways when they were

united by the pledge during their marriage. Parents are

obliged to give timely religious instructions to their growing

children. Parents should be exemplary models to their

children in things like tolerance, love, mutual respect,

unprejudiced affection, unselfish love, fidelity and humility.

Parents should give primary importance to the value-based

moral character formation of their children. They have a

responsibility to bring up their children in the fear and love

of God. “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger,

but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the

Lord” (Eph 6:4). Parents have an obligation to help thechildren choose their vocation. Along with material and

physical comforts, parents must also give their children

circumstances in which they are brought up according to

the Christian precepts. “Pamper the child, and he will

terrorize you; play with him and he will grieve you. Do not

laugh with him, or you will have sorrow with him, and in

the end you will gnash your teeth. Give him no freedom in

his youth, and do not ignore his errors. Bow down his neck

in his youth, and beat his sides while he is young, or else he

will become stubborn and disobey you, and you will havesorrow of soul from him” (Sir 30: 9-12).

The oxygen content of my blood got low and my capacity to breathe properly was impaired.

I was put on the Ventilator at Lourdes hospital, as I was unable to breathe, my body swollen

badly. The doctors thought I wouldn’t survive for more than 48 hours. A priest came and

administered me the Sacrament of Anointing the Sick. At this time my relatives and friends

requested prayer help from different retreat centres and prayer groups. Because of the tearful

prayers of my family members and the intercessory prayers from different quarters, God gave

me a new life. After a month a medical checkup was done and the doctor said that I was fit as

a fiddle. Thank you, Jesus!

Once a Jewish Rabbi started his prayers for the people

in the congregation. He wanted that God should listen to

his prayers and forgive the sins of all those who had

assembled in the synagogue. That moment, he heard the

voice of God. It was something like this: Let Tam pray for

you. If Tam prays for you I shall forgive your sins and

bless you. When the Rabbi heard the voice of God he was

terrified. However he gathered courage, and turning to

the Congregation, he asked, “Tam, where are you? Come

forward quickly!” The Rabbi did not know who Tam was.

As he was waiting anxiously for Tam, a poor man came

forward trembling all over with fear and anxiety.

As the poor man was standing there quite puzzled not

knowing why he was called, the Rabbi told him: “I was

praying for the forgiveness of the sins of all the people

here. Then God told me that if you pray for us God will

forgive us our sins. Therefore Tam, please pray for us!”

Tam told the Rabbi, “I will pray for you. Let me go

and get my prayer.” The Rabbi was happy with what he

said. Tam, who had gone away to take his prayer, returned

to the synagogue. At that time in his hand there was a

small earthen pot. He raised that pot and prayed like this:

“Holy God, you know that I don’t know how to pray. But

whatever I have, I offer to you. This pot contains my tears.

When I pray to you in the night, I remember my wife and

children. My eyes get filled with tears when I think that

they can not go to pray at synagogue because they do not

have proper clothes. Then I remember the poor people

and beggars. I see how they suffer from bitter cold,

scorching heat, gnawing hunger and parching thirst. Then

I cry again. Before those tears are dry I remember how

we brothers scream and fight with one another. Then again

I cry. I further remember how you suffer and cry

remembering our trespasses. My sorrow then overflowsbeyond bounds. All these tears I have collected in this pot.”

The prayer of Tam for others was heard by God and He

blessed all those who were present in the Synagogue. This

is a famous Jewish story. “What ever you ask for in prayer,

believe that you have received it, and it will be yours” (Mk

11:24). The Bible asks us to be always ready because the

Son of Man may come at the most unexpected time.

Reciting prayers by rote in a mechanical fashion, without

meditating upon their content and meaning will not bring

heavenly blessings. Build up your life by meaningful prayers.

Become aware of the miraculous strength of prayers. All

prayers reach God and he responds. The divine spirit that

flows into us through prayers will help us to face any crisis

of life with equanimity and ebullient optimism. God knows

all our needs. What we should do is keeping close proximity

to God. Jesus asks us to pray constantly. Each prayer makes

the divine spirit flow into us and so why should we become

skeptical about the efficacy of prayers? It is when we

pray for others that God showers us with greater blessings.

My dear Friends, let’s become children of prayers. It

is when we pray regularly, heartily and sincerely that God

interferes in our lives and good things happen to us. Let us

believe in God firmly and behave sincerely with our

brethren.

With love,

Br. Joy

In his letter to Timothy, St. Paul writes, “The saying is

sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came

in to the world to save sinners – of whom I am the foremost.

But for the very reason I received mercy, so that in me, as

the foremost, Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience,

making me an example to those who would come to believe

in him for eternal life” (1 Tim 1:15-16). Only those who

have come close to Jesus, the Light of the world, can see

clearly and proclaim to the world the real state they are in.

In the quotation above, St. Paul confesses he is the greatestsinner, but still he will receive the compassion and mercy

of the Lord. Making himself the model St. Paul declares

unequivocally that everyone, even the grossest sinner, has

a right for this kind of divine mercy.

When we confess from the bottom of our hearts that

we are sinners, we become eligible to receive the mercy

and forgiveness of Jesus, who released the humankind from

the bondage of sin. It is when we are in a state of divine

grace that we become aware of the terrible sins we have

committed.

In 2 Sam 12:1-13, we read about the fall of King David,

who was the chosen of God, into the mire of sin and he

was consequently rescued. As David was sitting on the

royal throne, the voice of Prophet Nathan thundered: “You

are that man!” In the powerful voice of the Lord, Nathan,

unmindful of the sword of the army or the King himself,

asked, “Why did you commit this sin, disobeying my

commandment? Why did you get Uriah the Hittite killed

using the sword of the Ammonites? Why did you take

Uriah’s wife? By accepting Uriah’s wife, you have sinned

against me and the sword will never go away from your

house.” David was a pious and good person before the

we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the Lord for whom we havewaited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation (Is 25:9).

people but Nathan tore away the false veil that David was

wearing, and that too, publicly. Then King David confesses

that he is a sinner. He accepts the penance. David said

that he had sinned against the Lord. His lamentation is

given in Ps 51 this way: “I know my transgressions, and

my sin is ever before me. Against you, you alone, have I

sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are

justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass

 judgment.”

David prays for forgiveness this way: Create in me a

clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within

me. Do not cast me away from your presence and do not

take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of

your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit. The

confessions, remorse and repentance of David make God

pleased with him once again. What we should recognize

here is that even David, who was a favourite of God, fell

into iniquity. But David does not justify himself, and,

recognizing the gravity of his trespasses, he is willing to

confess and seek forgiveness. He also willingly accepted

the punishment meted out to him by God. It shows that

even the anointed of God can make mistakes. But once

they make them, they should realize them and then seek

forgiveness to come back into the anointing grace of God.

Prophet Jonah breached God’s will and word and tried

to carry out his own plans. Then everything went awry.

The sea was raging. When Jonah realized that the shipand the people in it will perish, what did Jonah say? He

told the people to cast him into the sea; “then the sea will

get calm because it is because of me that storm has raged.”

Here Jonah is confessing before others that he is a sinner.

He willingly accepts the punishment for his trespasses.

Then we see how Jonah seeks divine help as he is in

trouble. “I called to the Lord out of my distress, and he

answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you

heard my voice. You cast me into the deep, into the heart

of the seas, and the flood surrounded me; all your waves

and your billows passed over me…. As my life was ebbing

away, I remembered the Lord; and my prayer came to

you, into your holy temple”. Jonah then pledges sacrifices

to the Lord. Jonah, who breached the word of God realizes

that salvation comes only from him. Jonah was ready to

confess that he was a sinner and all that adverse things

happened to him were the outcome of his own trespasses.

That saved Jonah. Jonah’s life teaches us how people will

be saved even if they go away from God, but come back

to him after realizing their mistakes.

In the Bible, we see a number of people, who after

committing sins, have confessed them and felt sorry for

them and got back into the grace of God. Examples are

the Chief Apostle Peter, Zacchaeus, the good thief, MaryMagdalene and the Samaritan woman. All these people

had confessed their sins, repented and received salvation

from Jesus. Just like the father waited for the prodigal

son, the eyes of Jesus seek us out to give forgiveness and

salvation. The Word says, “Indeed, God did not send His

Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that

the world might be saved through him” (Jn 3:17). In Rom

2:4 and 2 Pet 3:9, we read that God waits patiently for us

to make us repent for our sins and lead us into salvation.

So we should not put to test God’s patience and compassionand at the earliest opportunity confess our sins and show

repentance, thus once again getting united with God.

Jesus very strongly talked to the people who are trying

to make others right before cleansing themselves. “Why

do you see the speck in your neighbour’s eye, but do not

notice the log in your eye? Or how can you say to your

neighbor, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while

the log is in your eye?” (Mat 7:3-4). This Word gives us

the conviction that first of all we must accept that we are

sinners and we are wrong, and, before trying to changeothers we must change ourselves. See how the Psalmist

describes the pitiful nature of our life when we are not

willing to acknowledge our sins. “There is no soundness in

my flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in

my bones because of my sin. For my iniquities have gone

over my head; they weigh like a burden too heavy for me.

My wounds grow foul and fester because of my

foolishness; I am utterly bowed down and prostrate; all

day long I go around mourning. For my loins are filled with

burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh. I am utterly

spent and crushed; I groan because of the tumult of my

heart” (Ps 38:3-8).

It is when we get closer to the light of God, the Son of

righteousness, that we come to have a true picture of

ourselves. The Psalmist tells us what to do as a penance:

“I confess iniquity; I am sorry for my sin” (Ps 38:18).

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever (Heb. 13:8).

This miracle is described in the synoptic 3 Gospels

almost similarly except in some minor details. It takes place

in a house at Capernaum in Galilee (Mk 2:1). Neighbours

and Pharisees and Scribes from far away Jerusalem had

assembled there (Lk 5:17). Jesus was proclaiming the Word

to them (Mk 2:3). Jesus had the power of the Lord to heal

the sick (Lk 5:17). “Some people came, bringing to him a

paralyzed man, carried by four of them. And when they

could not bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they

removed the roof above him; and after having dug through

it, they let it down the mat on which the paralytic lay” (Mk

2:3-4). This is how historians describe the normal homes

of that area at the time of Jesus: the houses were not very

tall. Their roof was made by fixing flat pieces of rock from

wall to wall. The gaps between the sheets of rock were

filled with a mixture of lime and sand. To get on to the top

of the roof, there was a ladder from the outside. Therefore

it was not difficult to let the paralytic down along with the

mat through the roof without doing much harm to the house.

Seeing their faith, Jesus told the paralytic, “Son, your

sins are forgiven.” When we say ‘their faith’ it also includesthe faith of the paralytic. There is no justification in believing

that Jesus will forgive a sinner because of the faith of

others. When Jesus said “Your sins are forgiven”, some

Scribes said that Jesus was blaspheming, because no body

except God can forgive sins. Then Jesus asked them which

was easier – to say your sins are forgiven or to get up and

walk? This is to let you know that the Son of Man has the

right to forgive sins on earth. The scribes did not say

anything further. Most of the Jews thought that there would

be no disease without sin (Job 4:7). Rabbi Alexander taught:

Disease will not go away unless sins are forgiven. The

Scribes realize that it was certain that if the paralytic was

healed his sins were definitely forgiven.

As commanded by Jesus the paralytic took his matand walked away to his house. The Scribes who had

believed that the cause of disease is sin got a message

from this miracle: Jesus has the authority to forgive sins.

But Matthew records thus: “When the crowds saw it, they

were filled with awe, and they glorified God, who had given

such authority to human beings” (Mt 9:8). This might be

indicative of the fact that Jesus later gave the authority to

forgive to his Apostles (Jn 20:23).

MESSAGE

1. Jesus has the authority to forgive sins: Jesus makes

it clear that he heals the paralytic to tell the people

assembled there that the Son of Man has the authority to

forgive sins on earth. Through this, the relation between

the Father and Jesus is made clear. Jesus said, “Whoever

has seen me has seen the Father… I am in the Father and

the Father in me … the Father who dwells in me does his

works” (Jn 14:10-11).

2. There is a close connection between disease and

sin: Paul Turnier, in his book ‘A Doctor’s Case Book’,

describes an incident. A girl was under treatment for

anemia. Even a prolonged treatment did not help her and

so the doctor treating her decided to send her to another

doctor at a different place. She came back after a week.

The new doctor had sent a note along with her. It read, “I

am sending back the patient you had sent me. Now the

count in her blood is quite normal.” Then the doctor treating

her previously asked her if anything drastically different

happened in her life when she went to the new location

for treatment. Then she said there was something different.

She had hated somebody intensely for quite some time. But then her hatred went away miraculously and as a

consequence her disease also went away.

But we must also remember that it is not necessary

that disease and sin are always related. Some of the

disciples asked Jesus, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his

parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, ‘Neither

this man nor his parents sinned: he was born blind so that

God’s works might be revealed in him” (Jn 9:2-3).

3. Healings when fear and guilt go away

Jesus called the paralytic “Son”, asked him to be

courageous and told him that his sins were forgiven and

that he was healed. Feeling of guilt and fear emanating

from that can make somebody sick. William Barclay

explains how fear can cause paralysis as he interprets this

part of the Bible. A girl who used to play the piano in a

theater was reasonably healthy. But suddenly one day her

body was paralyzed. This is how it happened. As she was

playing the Piano electricity failed. There was darkness

everywhere and the place was filled with the stench of

cigarette smoke. It is when her body began to paralyze.

That paralysis continues to bother her for quite some time.

During the treatment it was diagnosed that her affliction

did not come from physical reasons.

The real reason for her trouble was an incident that

lay in her subconscious mind. With the help of her family

members the doctors treating her were able to diagnose

the reason. When she was only a few weeks old she was

lying in a cradle which was heavily decorated with

flammable stuff. With a burning cigarette in his hand, her

father bent down to take her from the cradle. Suddenly

the material caught fire and there were flames all over.

The child was however rescued without any harm and the

fire was extinguished. But this incident had etched a deepscar on the subconscious mind of the girl. When the theater

was engulfed in darkness and when the atmosphere was

filled with the stench of cigarette smoke, she was terrified

which resulted in her paralysis.

4. The Fellowship of the Faithful.

The paralytic was brought to Jesus by a group of people

who had faith in Jesus. The society of the faithful has a

big role to play in bringing sinners and the sick to the

presence of Jesus.

5. Healings for the Glory of God

The healing of the paralytic caused people to praise

and glorify God. The healed paralytic went home thanking

and praising God. All these people who witnessed this

miracle were awestruck and glorified God.

But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves (Jam 1:22).

HIS BEATITUDE MAR GEORGE ALENCHERYMAJOR ARCHBISHOP OF THE SYRO MALABAR CHURCH

UNIVERSAL CHURCH’S BOOK OF CATECHISM FOR YOUTHS

Modelling on the book of Catechism for the Universal Church, The Catholic Church is preparing a special book

of Catechism for the youths. It is being made ready in preparation for the International Youth Conference to be held

in Madrid, the capital of Spain, in August 2011. The editor of this book is Christopher Shornbonn who is a Cardinal and

Bishop of the Diocese of Vienna in Austria. In this book which is titled “YOUCAT” in short, all maters regarding the

Catholic faith are presented in a simple manner by way of questions and answers so that the youths can easily

understand its content. The teachings of the Church, Sacraments, Morality, Prayers and Spirituality are the things

discussed in it by way of questions and answers and interpretations. The Pope said that the new book has been

prepared to formulate a generation which lives in Christian faith and loves the Church. In 1980 Pope John Paul II had

asked the Synod of the Bishops to prepare a book of Catechism for the youths.

Ernakulam: Mar George Alenchery, who was the Bishop of ThuckalayDiocese, was chosen as the Major Archbishop of the Syro Malabar Church. He

was chosen as the third Major Archbishop by the Synod of Bishops, meeting at

the Church Headquarters at Mount St. Thomas, at Kakkanad, Ernakulam. He

belongs to the Thuruthy Parish of Changanassery Archdiocese. Apart from

being the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, he will also be the

Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese. His Beatitude Mar George

Alenchery was chosen to fill in the position that fell vacant by the demise of

Cardinal Mar Varkey Vithayathil. After the Syro-Malabar Church’s getting the

Major Archiepiscopal status, Mar Alenchery is the first Major Archbishop chosen

by the Syro-Malabar Bishops’ Synod itself. He was born on 19 April 1945 inthe Alenchery family. On 18 December he was ordained. In 1997 he became

the Bishop of Thuckalay diocese in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu.

SYNOD ON NEW EVANGELIZATION

The Universal Church is getting ready for a Synod on new Evangelization. It will take place in Rome between 7

and 28 of October 2012. The theme of the Synod is “The New Evangelization for the transmission of the Christian

faith”. The Lineamenta was published on 4 March 2011 by the office of the Synod of the Bishops. It was Pope Paul VI

who established the Synod which has a permanent nature and its own office. After the II Vatican Council, the Pope

was persuaded to establish such a Synod because of the awakening created by the Vatican Council. Pope John Paul II

said that the Synod is a fellowship of the Bishops that helps the Pope to manage the affairs of the Church. The first

Synod in the history of the Church was in Jerusalem (Acts 15). The Church looks forward to the Synod with great

expectations as the faith, even in nations which had accepted it in the early centuries, is losing its firm grip on the

people, especially the youths. The Church hopes to give a new awakening and energy through the Synod.
