Utrecht has 26 muncipalities.

Netherlands".• In 2007, the city earned the title of the greenest city in

whole Europe.• Tourists come to Amersfoort to look at the medieval

buildings.• 'Dierenpark Amersfoort' is one of the biggest zoos in the

Netherlands.• During the Second Worldwar, 'Kamp Amersfoort' was an

important assembly for more than 85.000 prisoners of the Sicherheitsdienst.

Prinsjesdag (princeday)Prinsjesdag is the third Tuesday of September. On this day the Queen of our country tells what the government is going to do, next year.

The Queen will be riding in her Golden cariage. And many people will come to see her.

Doden herdenking (memorial day)

On 4 May we remember the dead of those who died in war and peace operations. At 8 o’clock we are 2

minutes silent two remember the dead.

The Queen and the rest of the royal family lay a wreath on the monument on the dam.

Bevrijdingsdag (release day)

On 5 May we celebrate the end of the second world war, because on 5 May 1945 we were freed from the Germans. In the Netherlands are on many places concerts.

Sint Maarten (Haloween)

Sint Maarten is celebrated on 11 November. Children go door to door in the evening and sing Sint Maarten songs, the people give candies to them. The children have lanterns.

Sinterklaas Sinterklaas looks like Santa Claus. A few

weeks before the anniversary of Sinterklaas, he came from Spain and arrive in the Netherlands with his helpers and his steamship. You call his helpers ‘zwarte pieten’ that means black helpers. You can see a picture of Sinterklaas and his helpers on the picture. From the day he arrives the children put their shoe in front of the fireplace and went to bed. At night Sinterklaas will bring them a present with his helpers and his white horse through the roof. There are special songs and candy for this holiday. On the 5th of December he’ll knock on the door and leave a sack full of presents behind. 6th of December he leaves the country and went back to Spain.

Christmas

At Christmas it’s usual to decorate your house with: a Christmas tree, Christmas balls and lights.

• There is also lots of dilisious food.• One celebrates Christmas because the birth of

Jesus Christ, the other because Santa Claus is coming to town.

Easter

• Adults often hide small chocolate eggs for their children and the children must find them.

• One celebrates Easter because Jesus Christ is risen from the dead, the other because the Easter Bunny comes.

Koninginnedag On Queen Day we celebrate the birthday of the queen of

the Netherlands. It’s supposed to be a day of national unity and being together. The tradition started on 31 August 1885, on the birthday of Princess Wilhelmina, later Queen Wilhelmina. Since 1949, after the accession of Queen Juliana, Queen's Day is Queen Juliana's birthday on 30 April. Although Queen Beatrix’s birthday is on 31 January, she officially celebrates her birthday on 30 April.

Activities on queens day: There are a lot of markets, almost every street, where everybody is allowed to sell things. There are games for children, performances, music concerts and go on like that.

The night before Queens Day is also celebrated in the most cities, especially by young people.

“Oud en Nieuw”New Year

“Oud en Nieuw” literally means “Old and New”. The Dutch people celebrate this on the 31st of December. All the friends and family come together and have dinner with eachother. The childeren are

allowed to stay up late. The family play games and have a big home cooked meal. A Dutch specialty with “Oud en Nieuw” is a “oliebol”.

It’s a round fried meal ball with sugar. At 12 o’clock the people toast their glasses of champagne. There is lots of fireworks. Mostly the

teenage boys like to light the fireworks.

“Valentijnsdag”Valentine’s day

Valentine’s day is a perfect occasion to express your love. When you are in love with somebody, you can ask him or her “Wil je mijn Valentijn zijn?” (Would you be my

Valentine?) On Valentine’s day, lovers, friends and family members exchange Valentine’s Day gifts. Couples also plan out romantic getaway or Valentine parties to

celebrate February 14th romantically. People often send each other cards and flowers.

“1 April”April Fools Day

April Fools day is celebrated as a day which tolerates practical jokes and general foolishness. You can play jokes on friends and family members, teachers and neighbors. You are allowed to play jokes on each other all

day long. The jokes are mostly played by children.

How does our school look like?

Het Nieuwe Eemland is a big school. It used to be a nunnery. We have 4 floors at our school. Downstairs is our eating room: the Arena. We also have a library. Here are all the computers.We have 3 gym halls. There also is a study room. You’ve got to go there when you’re rude in the lessons and you’re cut out of the lessons or if you were to late the day before. Then you’ve to be at school at 8 the next day. We have in the whole school lockers. Every student has one.At our school, the most children are white. It’s a catholic school. Not everybody believes in god, not at all. But we celebrate Christmas bigger and we always have a charity operation with Christmas.  

Rules

You must keep to the rules or else there will beconsequents. When you’re not behaving in the lessons, you will get cut out of the lessons. Then you’ve to go to the study room till the end of the lesson. When you’re cut out of the lessons to much, you get a card. You can get expelled. When you’ve done something which is really not good, you can also get expelled. You are only allowed to eat in the Arena or outside. When you’re not in the lessons, you have attention of 2 hours in the study room. When you’re off the area of the school, you also have attention in the study room. This is only when you’re in 6th till 8th grade.

70 minutes schedule and lesson hours

At our school you’ve most of the time from first till fifth hour. When you’re in the 8th and 9th grade you can also have a sixth lesson. Our lessons take 70 minutes and most of them are boring. Most of the time your lessons are over at 3.10 PM. The 70 minutes schedule is useful when you’ve much homework, so you can make it in the lessons, so you can do less at home.We have two breaks. They take 20 and 30 minutes. The first break is after the first hour and the second after the third hour. So from 10 past half 10 till 10 hour (AM) is the first break. And from 10 for half 1 till 10 for 1 (PM) is the second break.

About Dutch food
