We are waiting for the break-through in which appeals will be made to work harder (and longer?) rather than repeated warnings about lowering our living standards. In fact, if there is one reason why South African immigration has been welcome and successful in Israel over the past three decades, it is that the South African oleh, generally speaking, is accus tomed to a working day which extends beyond the early afternoon hours, even into the late after noon. and he (or she) may have had a tough time of it, convincing our fellow Israelis that while it is correct that we play hard when we play, we l i k e t o w o r k h a r d w h e n w e w o r k . Slogans and theories apart, however, one fact emerges more clearly than ever in these trying economic times: the real values of coming to Israel, living in Israel and staying in Israel are stable, in spite of devaluations, galloping inflation, new tax impositions and unsettling uncertainties' in the labour, consumer and financial areas of life. We know why we came here. We know what we iiave to do here. And, without looking at Israel as if it were one of the shopwindows of the world, or even a showcase for the Galut, we recognise the enduring satisfaction of aliyah, and the even greater satisfaction in klitah. These values, like the validity of Zionism itself, have not been eroded! ZIONISM iS NOT DEAD, BUT D O E S I T L I V E I N I S R A E L ? I have just returned to Israel .from an internationalconference where all the women delegates werelisted as Ms. The people in charge of sectionswere, referred to as chai rpersons. I would l ike toobject to the way you list new arrivals.I have d iscussed th i s w i th o ther women who receive TELFED and they agree with me that "(Husband's name) -i- wife and 3 children" is insultingand anachronistic. Unless you want to be labelleda male chauvinist pig, we suggest that you mention the wife and children's names as well;

Apart from this, we enjoy TELFED and lookforward to i ts arr ival .

outpost", where he began as a pupil and went ont o b e a t e a c h e r t h e r e .

In the years just before the outbreak of WorldWar II, Simie, while teaching at Hillel College andstudying at the U.C.T., came under the influenceof the late Chief Rabbi Prof, Israel Abrahams.His various activities in Zionist Youth work typifiedhis personal inclination to the practical, ratherthan the political aspects of the cause.

Volunteering as a medical orderly on the outbreakof war, Simie was appointed First South AfricanChaplain to the Expeditionary Forces, and wascommissioned (Lieut.) in Kenya, with Gen. Dan

Pienaar's First S.A. Brigade. Promoted to captain,he saw service in Abyssinia, Somaliland, Egyptand in North Africa. Reticent by nature, Simienevertheless can expound on the wartime experiences of the South Africans "up north", especiallyof the Jews on active service, and it Is an expedition in khaki nostalgia to talk to Simie about thosedays of mud, awe, and eventual triumph.When the F i rs t D iv is ion re tu rned to South A f r i ca ,Simie was appointed Assistant Jewish PrincipalChaplain to the U.D.F., under Rabbi W. Hirsch(Pretoria) at Voortrekkerhoogte, where he alsos e r v e d o n t h e N a t i o n a l S o l d i e r s R e h a b i l i t a t i o nBoard. Simie regards his period there as amongthe happiest of his life. Before going on activeservice, he had married Hannah Keyser (Katzen-stein) , daughter of Just ice Dr. Richard Katzenstein(Hannover), who had found refuge in Jerusalemafter his expulsion by the Nazis in the early' t h i r t i e s .

This gave Simie a close personal attachment toJerusalem, and during the period of his active service "up north", he visited the Yishuv wheneverpossible and encouraged others to do so, too,including not only Jewish men on active servicebut non-Jewish soldiers and officers as well.

B e f o r e a n d a f t e r t h e e s t a b l i s h m e n t o f t h e S t a t eof Israel, Simie became the National Organiser ofthe League for the Haganah under the Chairmanship of his wartime colleague and much admiredand beloved friend, the late Major Leo Kowarsky.After the War of Liberation Simie headed the S.A.Zionist Federation departments of Aliyah, J.N.F.,Medical, Tourism and Military Manpower and wassubsequently appointed as National Organiser ofthe Israel United Appeal where he served for ad e c a d e .

Because of all these activities Simie and Hannahmade up their minds to return to live in the JewishHomeland, and in February, 1956, Simie arrivedwith his family to join the Tel Aviv Office of theFederation. Because of the small staff and thelarge, programme of work, each person's work loadwas many-faceted; Simie carried out the tasks ofWelfare Officer, Liaison Officer with Nahal, andSecretary of the Medical Committee.Apart from an interruption of some 2Vj years whenSimie served in the Absorption Department ofthe Jewish Agency, Simie has been with theFederation for the past 28 years. Until the openingof the S.A. Consulate in Tel Aviv, he was in effect

held amongst the highest positions the State ofIsrael has to offer. Yet perhaps the biggest contr ibut ion has been the in i t ia t ive which South Af r ican Jewry has taken in the pioneering of freshthinking and new projects.

The Israel Office of the South Afr ican Zionist Federation (and a large number of S. Africans nowliving in Israel) is not satisfied with the aliyah ofyoung South Africans and is therefore, once again,taking the initiative. It is planning to consider, inscientific terms, the reasons which promote, andthose that militate against aliyah, in the hope thatsuch a study will go far towards the encouragement of a larger, positive aliyah.

From the early 1920's onwards, a trickle of SouthAfrican families came to live in Palestine. Theycame to live out their years of retirement, or tooffer their successful know-how to the tiny community. Some came to fulfil the dream of findingtheir last resting place in "The Holy Land". Fromthen on, the trickle of young olim has grown andtoday they are to be found in most parts of Israel,in most spheres of activity.

The introduction of bowling into Israel owes muchto a dedicated group of South African sportsmenwho were inspired by Alf Blumberg and the lateDave Millen. Putting down the first green provedto be something of a major operation with unexpected hazards cropping up all the time. Thesemay best be understood by quoting from a humorous article written at the time by Phillip Gillon,J E R U S A L E M P O S T j o u r n a l i s t a n d S o u t h A f r i c a no l e h —

During the years, Israel bowlers have had the advantage of playing host to many groups of bowlersfrom South Africa, Rhodesia, England, Australiaand New Guinea and, in 1968, placed their facilitiesat the disposal of the Paraplegic Bowlers who camefrom all over the world to compete in the 17thInternational Stoke-Mandeville Games — a sporting event of unusual interest.There are presently, some three hundred bowlersin the country mainly concentrated in Tel Aviv,Ramat Gan, Savyon and Caesarea. The kibbutzimare also showing a marked interest in the game.

The modern term Zionism first appeared at theend of the 19th Century, denoting the movementwhose goal was the return of the Jewish Peopleto Israel. It was coined by Nathan Birnbaum in 1890.

Chaim Weizmann coined a new term — "SyntheticZionism" to collate Herzl's Political Zionism withHibbat Zion's practical Zionism. Weizmann statedthat the two approaches supplement each otherand are in reality two sides of the same coin: political activity is meaningless unless it is based uponpractical settlement in Eretz Israel and settlementalone could not develop into desirable proportionswithout the support of political efforts.
