In the dome there was one angel holding a cross and on the communion table there was a modest-size bronze cross. When I was older and asked about this I was told that the benefactor and builder of the church liked angels, but didn’t like the cross. While this lady built a beautiful sanctuary it left out an essential symbol of the Christian faith - the cross! I am glad that we have a prominent cross in our Worship Center! When we first moved in to our new facility the cross was not up yet. Our funding was very tight and that item was one of the things that was left for later. However I thought that sooner or later someone would want to have a cross in our Worship Center. Whenever someone asked about this I told them that we had one in our plans, but needed about $5000 to make it happen. There was an elder- ly woman in our church who had been concerned about this and one day she approached me about making an anonymous donation to cover the cost. I think I have guarded her identity long enough and she has now passed away. It was Kay Daugherty. I think our cross at the front of the Worship Center is beautiful. One of our members, Art Mace, installed the cross that his company built. Most weeks in our traditional services when we sing the Gloria Patri we encourage people to look at the cross as they sing. I think this is a powerful reminder of how much God loves us and the length that Jesus was willing to go so that our sings could be forgiven. When I think of “my view of the cross” it is standing up, facing the cross, and singing the Gloria Patri which begins “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost.” It is reminding myself of one of my favorite scriptures from the second chapter of Philippians... And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” The cross is both humble and glorious; horrible and beautiful. It is through the cross that we are saved. As the hymn “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” puts it so powerfully… “Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.” Yours in Christ, Chris SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST: The Owasso Observer is published monthly. Taud’s “Loose Ends” - Associate Pastor’s Column P A G E 3

We are in the last week of another Lenten season. As we prepare for Holy Week and Easter, I hope that it’s been a time of renewal and reflection for all of you. I believe that the “not a fan.” series of messages and worship services that we have experienced together as a church family during this season has been challenging and pushed our faith just a bit. If you haven’t already had the chance to write your own testimonial, I want to encourage you to do so. After Easter we will be putting together a booklet of different testimonies that have been turned in. One of the more powerful parts of this series has been hearing different people’s stories. Are you merely a fan of Jesus… or a Com-pletely Committed Follower of Him? It’s no secret that my two favorite times of the year are Spring and Fall. As each spring rolls around and we see God’s creation come to life once more, I am reminded that hope springs eternal… that God’s mercies are made new each day… and that no matter what we have done or where we have been, through the Grace of Jesus Christ we are being made new and fresh. As the apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:17 “If anyone is in Christ, they are a New Creation; the old has gone, the new has come.” That’s always been one of my favorite verses and a part of my favorite passages of scripture. During the week of Spring Break, our family took a vacation to Washington DC at the height of the Cherry Blossom fes-tival. It’s the third time we have visited our nation’s capital and there are still some things that we didn’t get to see or do while we were there. We were able to take a short drive over to Annapolis, MD and visit the US Naval Academy. Unfortunately it was closed to visitors that week as they were making security improvements, so we took some obliga-tory pictures at one of the entrance gates and admired it from afar. The town was really neat and full of history. The highlight of the whole trip though was getting to tour the Capitol Building (a big thanks to Bethany Wood and her con-nection for that one) and then visiting the FDR and MLK memorials. They were all stunning to view. One of the last quotes at the MLK site is one of my favorites, “True peace isn’t merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of jus-tice.” Can I get an “Amen” to that? Finally, the month of April is promising to be a formative and busy one. Our emphasis of ‘Serving 24/7 Living it 365’ has been stretched once again to include opportunities to serve throughout the entire month. Please don’t feel like you’ve got to do everything that has been planned; but at the same time – make sure that you get involved in at least one of the projects and activities !!! There is literally something that each of us and all of us can do.... seriously. We are praying for our community and the upcoming General Conference. We are putting together health care, school, and sewing kits for U.M.C.O.R. We are taking another group to Joplin to help them rebuild their community. We are helping at Restore Hope, Exodus House, and Pearl’s Hope. We are working in and around the area of Owasso and our neighborhood in our Day of Serving. Friends, please don’t let these opportunities pass you by. I am convinced that when we combine our faith and our beliefs with our actions and our deeds, there is nothing that can stop us. Greater is He who is in us, than he who is in the world. Together we are the hands and feet of God… Together we are the Body of Christ… Together we are the church and we have all been called to make a difference in the lives of people around us. In HIS Grip <>< Taud Boatman

Serving 24-7 is Coming Again! Starts Saturday, March 31st

In 2005 our church participated in our first day of Serving where we explored the idea that “Anyone can be great, because anyone can serve (Martin Luther King, Jr.)”. Two years ago we stretched our Day of Serving into a Weekend of Serving and last year we stretched once more from a Weekend of Serving to a Week of Serving. This year we are doing a Month of Serving. Our focus this year will be on various Saturday activities, starting on March 31st and continuing each Saturday until April 28th with our Day of Serving in Owasso. Don’t forget our Serving 24-7 Celebration Banquet the following Sun-day (5.6) at 5:30 pm. We are wanting people and groups to try and serve as many times as possible during the month. There are a variety of ways to be involved with the emphasis on serving. Most of the activities are during the day. Some will re-quire physical labor and others will simply require your presence. In any case, we hope that you’ll consider serving with us.

Saturday, March 31st There are several projects at the church for this Saturday. (1) Yellow Balloon Playground * Yellow Balloon is receiving a new playground. We will need help installing it starting at 8 am. The old playground will be taken down on Mar 17th by St.Paul UMC in Muskogee and they will take it to Mexico on mission and re-use it there. (2) Spring Cleaning ~ meeting at 9:00 am * There are a couple of outside projects taking place that day and there are some areas inside the church that require some attention as well. If you can come and give a few hours of your time, it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Pastor Taud to get signed up or if you have any questions. (3) Prayer Mantles ~ meeting at 9:00 am *Our church is hosting an event for the Bartlesville District to make prayer mantles for the delegates, bishops, worship leaders, staff members and prayer volunteers of General Conference. These prayer mantles will serve as a reminder that they are yoked with Christ and covered with the mantle of prayer as they do the work of discernment and holy conferencing. Our job for that day will be to paint the silk mantle and pray for those that will wear them as they are created. This is a fun and easy activity; you do not need to be a skilled painter. We are asking for a $7.00 donation to help with the cost of the prayer mantles, but don’t let the cost keep you away. If you would be interested in attending please call contact Priscilla Tiger at 918-605-8196 or send an email to [email protected] by March 16th to let us know of your interest. (4) Foundation for Church Sign * We are in the process of getting a new church sign. This project is being coordinated by Larry Odell, with help from the United Methodist Men.

Saturday, April 7th Easter Egg Hunt ~ 10:00 am * The eggs have been filled. Thanks to all the Sunday School classes and groups who gave of their time to make this hap-pen and for those who have donated candy to make the stuffing possible. Now we invite you to come and watch how quickly 5,000 eggs can be picked up. Weather pending, we’ll be outside on the lawn. Come and join us for a good time! Assemble Kits for UMCOR ~ 11:00 am * We will again be collecting items to pack relief kits for UMCOR this year. These kits are sent around the world to people who are in need. Last year we packed 5 different kits but this year we are going to focus on 3 specific kits (school, health, sewing). We will be collecting donations for these kits through April 1st. You can help by shopping for any of the items needed on the donation boards or make a monetary donation and we will do the shopping for you. Starting at 11:00 am or so, we will begin assembly of these kits. If you have any questions, please contact Corrina Robin-son at the church office. If you want to know what items go into these kits, visit the tables outside the Worship Center. Preparing and Serving A Meal for our 30 Hour Famine Participants * Our youth will be participating in a 30 Hour Famine starting on Good Friday. They will be breaking their fast at 2:00 pm on Saturday but help is needing in preparing and then serving the meal for the group. You are also encouraged to fast with the youth if you so desire. Prayer Walk ~ 1:00 pm * Prayerwalking is simply praying with purpose as you walk. The object of Prayerwalking is to go to a specific location to offer up prayers for that area. It is an excellent exercise in listening for God’s voice as it requires all of your senses to be tuned in to God. The biblical roots behind prayerwalking are found in Luke 10 when Jesus appointed 72 of His fol-lowers to go out in pairs to prepare the way for Him to come. In a very real way, prayerwalking prepares the way for God’s message to come to an area through blessing. This walk will take place in the Coffee Creek Neighborhood, behind the church. We will be praying for each home and the occupants of that home as we walk by. We will have prayer guides to assist you in how to pray. We will gather at the church around 1:00 pm. After walking around 30-45 minutes we will return to the church and share our experiences.

Other classes

Serving 24-7 is Coming Again! Starts Saturday, March 31st

Saturday, April 14th

A group from our church will be traveling back to Joplin, Missouri as we continue to assist the community in putting homes and lives back together. There will be opportunities to sign-up during worship through Easter Sunday, April 8th or you can send an email to Andy Henson ([email protected]) at any time to sign-up. We hope that you’ll consider coming with us that day. Our plan is to meet at the church at 7:00 am, have a small worship gathering and leave from the church around 7:30 am. We will return to the church by 7:00 pm. Cost of the mission is $20 and this goes to help raise support for the ongoing purchasing of supplies and materials for the projects. Necessary forms will be emailed to you as you sign up or can be picked up at the church office.

Saturday, April 21st

Last year we took 5 day trips to various ministries and agencies within the United Methodist Church in Oklahoma; had an opportunity to learn more about what they do and do some volunteer work as well. This year, we will be returning to several of these sites on this Saturday. We are currently looking at offering 3 different opportunities to serve at Restore Hope, Pearl’s Hope, and the Exodus House. These groups will meet at the church in the morning and spend the day learning and serving at these organizations. Lunch will be eaten on-site so you will need to bring a sack lunch. The groups will return to Owasso early to mid-afternoon. Carol Cooper is helping to organize these day-trips but we are looking for individuals who might be interested in leading the different groups going out this day. Please contact Carol ([email protected]) if you can help serve in this way.

Saturday, April 28th

This is our big Day of Serving in Owasso. Registration will begin at 7:30 am. After a time of getting organized and time of worship, our “God Squads” will be sent out to their work sites. Those who participate in this event are asked to bring work gloves. Those who sign up will be assigned to God Squads during the week leading up to Saturday. There will be a meeting for God Squad leaders on Wednesday, April 25th. We will work until the projects are done or 5:00 p.m. at the latest and a lunch will be served at the church around 12:00 pm. Childcare for birth through kindergarten is provided for participants. There will be children’s activities for 1st - 5th grade and we will also need adults to sign-up to help with the 1st-5th grade service opportunities. We are anticipating that the Day of Serving will again be a great event for our church and our community. Pastor Taud is helping to coordinate things for this day. Please contact him ([email protected]) if you are interested in helping with site selection or being a God Squad leader.

Sign Me Up

Be looking for opportunities to sign up for these events in a couple of ways… (1) There will be cards in the seatbacks. On Sunday morning, fill out the information on the card and turn it in (2) We will have sign-up sheets on the Serving 24-7 tables sitting outside the worship center. Take time to visit the table to see how you can get involved. Be looking for people to help sign you up on Sunday morning as well. (3) Come by the church office at any point and we can give you the information you need!

Trailblazers Activities for April

We are in the final month of our Confirmation Class this year and it’s been wonderful. I know that God is moving and that this part of the faith journey is such an important one in the lives of our youth, but it is also important for the parents and Friends in Faith. What a blessing it is to share on the journey of faith together. A few reminders: April 1st—Parents attend class with the Confirmands at 5:15 PM FRIDAY, April 6th—Confirmation Class at 6:00 PM and then attend the Good Friday Service April 8th—No class due to Easter Sunday April 15th—Confirmation Class at 5:15 PM April 22nd—Friends in Faith attend class with Confirmands at 4:30 PM Confirmation Banquet—6:00 PM April 29th—Confirmation Sunday

Also, Parents and Friends in Faith—if you haven’t gotten your prayers into Carol for the Prayer Book, please do so by April 6th. You can email them to [email protected] or drop them off in the office. Again, it’s been a wonderful class and we look forward to this next month with all of you!

Please join us on Thursday, April 12th for our monthly potluck luncheon at 11:30am. We are pleased to have as our Guest Speaker Jan Warren, Christian Writer/Author. Jan began writing at a young age. But in 2004, she decided to pursue writing more seriously after she felt God call her to fast from TV. In her own words “I was home one day, and God’s voice of the Holy Spirit told me to fast from TV”. Jan is an Owasso resident and is a 2011 finalist in the American Christian Fiction Writer (ACFW) Genesis contest’s romantic suspense category. You will not want to miss this interesting and inspiring program! To learn more about Jan Warren, visit her website at www.janwarrenbooks.com.

(Also, on April 12th before our luncheon, we will have an “Open Gym”, starting at 9:30, come & shoot some hoops, try 8-ball pool or table tennis. Then after the meeting, hang around to play “Farkle”. Our sign-up table will be available to get things off and running for our “Silver Games” coming in June)

Please join us on Thursday, April 26th as we tour the beautiful church and grounds of The Good Shepherd Monastery near Hulbert OK. This Oklahoma Monastery guards the sheep, literally. In a life unguided by the hands of a clock, the 35 monks who live at the monastery divide their days into different watches. Learn about the rare breed of sheep, their chants, melodies, the seven times of formal daily prayer, and much more! We will leave the church at 9:30. After the tour we will have lunch at the Country Cottage in Locust Grove

The UMM will host their monthly breakfast on Saturday, April 7th at 8:30AM. We hope you will come out and enjoy some Christian fellowship with your FUMC brothers. The invitation is for all the men of FUMC and their guests to join us for a great breakfast along with some spiritual growth and fellowship.
