PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Dear Parents/Carers: We are celebrating Book Week this week. Ms Yet-Foy and our teaching staff have many wonderful events planned for your children. WAKAKIRRI SENSATION Recently I had the pleasure of enjoying ‘Inside Out at School’, a story dance performed by our school at the Riverside Theatre. The evening was thoroughly entertaining for the audience from five schools. Our students performed with grace and drama. One of the main focus areas the organisers asked the dancers to commit to was the idea of sustainability. Our dancers received an award for this and another award. Congratulations to Mrs Randhawa and Ms CausleyTodd, our teacher organisers, and the Wakakirri choreographer Kirra. This was certainly another opportunity for our students to shine!
STRING WORKSHOP TODAY The academic benefits of a music education are well known. Today our school embarked on another innovative way of expanding the academic opportunities of our students, with some music immersion. Our first ever string workshop was held today. Congratulations to the students who took part in this incredible learning and performance opportunity. Students practised their musical notation, mathematical problem solving skills and their 21 Century learning skills of creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking. Thank you to our expert string music specialists Ruth Choong, Danny Rosenbaum and Brian Sim for sharing their incredible talent with our rising stars. Thank you to Kylie Halliday, Sandra Zhang and Belinda Hamilton for their organisational and musical support. Our vision is to give our rising pool of budding string players further opportunities to work as an orchestra, with a concert performance for our community offered as well. We look forward to offering such incredible workshops to our string players again soon. Parents, if your child missed out on this workshop today, please seriously consider this valuable learning experience next time. LOST PROPERTY UPDATE At our latest meeting, P&C endorsed the idea to actively improve the state of our lost property. Ideas put forward that will be addressed in the near future will be: 1. Uniform items that have names will be
returned to appropriate classrooms wherever possible, in a timely fashion.
2. Uniform items that are unnamed will be washed after two weeks and placed in the pre-loved sales items of the uniform shop.
3. Lunch boxes and drink bottles will be disposed of hygienically after two weeks.
4. The cages will be removed from near the K-2 COLA area and hall area.
In the near future, I look forward to more lost property being claimed, more student responsibility for their uniform and food items, and generally a more tidy entrance to our school from the High St and Telopea Ave entrances. You can help: 1. Purchase Smart Tags from the uniform shop
to attach to hats and clothing. 2. LABEL your child’s uniform items and
regularly CHECK the label can be read clearly.
3. Remind your child that it is not appropriate to take an article of clothing from lost property that does not belong to them. This is actually called stealing, and is not a good action to encourage. Honesty and respect please everyone. If a child has forgotten their jacket, they should go to the office for help. If they have forgotten their hat, they should sit in the shade at break times.
SAFE PARKING The senior Executive of our school is in regular dialogue with NSW Road Safety and Strathfield Council about our congested road situation, especially on special event days. School Club and P&C are very aware of the never-ending issues around road safety that we are asked to respond to. We met with the newly appointed Strathfield Council Road Safety Education Officer, Usha Arvind last week to discuss road safety education for parents and students. Miss Barker (KG) attended a K-6 professional learning road safety education course recently too. We also regularly consult our neighbours, in an effort to support them with any road safety concerns. You can help:
1. Park responsibly, following the streets signs
2. Be patient, knowing your child CAN wait – it’s okay, they are safe
3. Never ever approach another driver to complain or make a point, raise an issue or try to resolve a traffic issue yourself – ring 000 or Strathfield Council
4. Kiss n’ Ride has rules attached – please follow them!
IT IS TIME TO ENROL FOR 2018 Enrolments for 2018 are welcome. Please bring to the office the relevant paperwork to obtain the enrolment form. If you do not reside in the local catchment area, please note that it is a requirement to complete an “out of area” application. Have a wonderful week everyone, Mrs K Mortimer Principal Peer Support In this week’s final session of the Peer Support module Moving Forward children will reflect on what they have learned over the past seven weeks. The student will make a cube to remind them to draw on their strengths, achievements and people who support them when faced with challenging situations. These protective factors promote confidence and motivate students to approach new situations where they can then apply the Pause, Plan, Proceed Model.
Mrs M Alexiou Stage 3 AP FATHERS’ DAY STALL – Volunteers needed The Fathers’ Day Stall is on this Thursday 31 August, 2017. Do you have a spare half hour? We still need more helpers from 9am – 2pm on the day. It would be nice to have a rotation of volunteers so that no one has to stay all day and parents can make new friends while assisting the children. Help will also be needed with the layby sales and tidying up on Friday 1 September from 8:15am – 10am. Also, remember to send some money to school with your child so that they can buy a special gift. Please contact Nichola Beukes 0435 413 548 if you can help. BOOK WEEK Book Week celebrations have commenced! The theme for 2017 is “Escape to Everywhere”. Students and parents can donate books to the library in a sale from 8:30-9:00am and 3:00-3:30pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in the Library. Students are also welcome to visit the library during lunch time to have a look and make a purchase. Once the books are accessioned onto the library system, the students will have the opportunity to take the books they purchased home for 2 weeks and then return them for others to borrow. The library thanks you for your generous donation. On Friday 1 September, students will take part in the ‘Super Duper Performance’ & ‘Book Character Costume Day’ where they can come to school dressed as their favourite book character. Please note, we will not be having a formal costume parade this year. There will also be a K-2 Book Cover Design and 3-6 Comic Book Competition. See the attached note for further information. Ms K Halliday Deputy Principal EARN & LEARN IS BACK (THANKFULLY) This year SSPS will be participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn sticker collection. It is the 5th year our children will be benefiting from the equipment that comes from Modern Teaching Aids because of the amount of stickers our community brings in. We encourage parents to collect the stickers and
either put in the collection box in the office foyer or take a sticker sheet and affix the stickers. PM Readers Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten) teachers and students wish to thank the P&C for contributing $430 through tea-towel fundraising, towards purchasing our wonderful PM Readers. This will ensure that we can continue to deliver our high quality reading programs. Early Stage 1 students are enthusiastic readers and we are proud to be reading their brand new books.
SPORTING SCHOOLS NSW K-2 CLINIC Thanks to Sporting Schools NSW, K-2 students will be participating in a football clinic. Each class will participate in four 30 minute sessions run by NSW Sydney FC. Please ensure that students come to school in sports uniform on the following dates – Friday 8 September, Friday 15 September & Friday 22 September. Thank you, Ms L Mascitelli & Ms S Tutt WAKAKIRRI The Wakakirri group performed our dance story “Inside Out at School” at the Riverside Theatre on 23 August, 2017. Through colour and movement, our dance-story explores various emotions (happiness, sadness, anxiety and anger) experienced by a new student at school. This student begins to understand her emotions and nurture her own wellbeing and sense of belonging. The dancers practised for twelve weeks to develop team work, self-confidence and personal expression. We performed alongside four other Sydney Primary schools. We pursued the theme of sustainability and won two awards on the night; one of the “most creative reuse of material for costumes” and the other for the “best minimal use of sets, props and costumes”. A successful night was enjoyed by students, parents and staff. Congratulations to all our young performers for their dedication, persistence, artistic talent and engaging stage performance.
