Welcome to the University of Southampton

The University of Southampton has a global reputation for academic excellence. We are one of the top three universities in the UK for engineering and welcome you to our new branch campus within Iskandar’s EduCity development in Johor, Malaysia.

The University has had the privilege of educating international students from all over the world for over 50 years at our

Southampton campus. We are fortunate to enjoy long-standing links with Malaysia that span many disciplines and levels of education and research. We are, therefore, delighted to extend a warm Southampton welcome to international students coming to join us at our Malaysia campus this year.

Our premier undergraduate MEng Mechanical Engineering programme allows you to study using some of the latest research facilities and equipment in the world and put the theory you learn into practice to deliver real results. This programme has been approved by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).

Our prestigious MEng degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) has also been fully approved by the MQA and the programme will commence in September 2013.

Our split campus (UK and Malaysia) degree offers the chance to gain a unique ‘Southampton’ education in Malaysia combined with two years at a leading research-centred UK university, for around 60 per cent of the cost of the same degree in the UK only. You will graduate with a degree from an internationally recognised university and experience higher education in the UK. The programmes of study are, as far as possible, the same as those of our UK-based provision, and lead to the award of the same degrees. Your degree certificate will state that the degree is awarded by the University of Southampton.

University of Southampton Malaysia is registered as a Private Institute of Higher Learning by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia.

We are delighted you have chosen to study at the University of Southampton and take your place at the cutting edge, among some of the most talented students and academics from around the world.

Professor John McBride, Chief Executive Officer, University of Southampton Malaysia campus

The University of Southampton Malaysia campus is Southampton’s first overseas campus for engineering. It is set within Iskandar’s EduCity development in Nusajaya, Johor, Malaysia, a dedicated hub, 1km east of the Gelang Patah Interchange on the main Second-Link Expressway. Iskandar is in the heart of Malaysia’s economic zone. We are 8km from the Tuas Link to Singapore. Changi International Airport in Singapore is a 45 minute drive away from campus and we are just 20 minutes from Johor’s Senai International Airport.

The state-of-the-art EduCity Iskandar Malaysia development comprises international universities, schools and colleges as well as leisure and sports facilities. Our newly constructed campus has innovative, world-class facilities in which to study, with modern, spacious and safe living accommodation in close proximity, together with cafés and restaurants and health service facilities. The University is a diverse and lively community with staff and students from many different faiths.

The world-class physical recreation and sports facilities at EduCity include a large capacity sports stadium with a football/rugby pitch and a 400-metre athletic track that complies with the Association of Athletics Federation standards. There is also an aquatic centre with Olympic-size swimming pool, which meets International Swimming Federation standards for water polo and synchronised swimming. An indoor arena provides courts for basketball, badminton, squash, volleyball and futsal (five-a-side).

Immigration

Student pass

The university requires all international students (except diplomatic pass holders, Malaysian permanent residents and Malaysia my second home (MMSH) applicants) to hold a student pass while studying at our Malaysia campus.

The university will apply for the student pass on your behalf and it is usually valid for one year. We can apply for a renewal or extension, but you are personally responsible for submitting the necessary documents for initial application and renewal (inform us at least two months prior to the expiry date). It usually takes three months for the student pass to be approved.

Student pass application process

All student pass applications are processed through Education Malaysia Global Service (EMGS). Once the education institution approves the student’s application we can apply for the student pass on the student’s behalf. The student must supply the Institution with the following information:

– offer letter from institution

– two passport size photographs with blue background (3.5cm x 5cm)

– two copies of all pages of their passport certified in accordance with requirements

– the passport must be valid for at least 12 months from the expected date of entry

– academic and other certificates certified as a true copy by the institution issuing the document or a commissioner of oaths, notary public or lawyer

– personal bond payment (held by the institution)

– payment for the following:

– EMGS visa processing fee: RM1,000

– medical screening fee: RM300 (includes transportation arrangement by the university)

– student pass fee: RM60

– medical insurance premium: RM850

– airport pickup: RM200

– personal bond: varies according to applicant’s country of origin

– multiple entry visa fees: varies according to applicant’s country of origin

For personal bond rates, please refer to: www.imi.gov.my/index.php/en/main-services/visa/security-bond

For Multiple Entry Visa Fees/rates, please refer to: www.imi.gov.my/index.php/en/main-services/visa/visa-fees

Once your student pass is approved, a visa approval letter will be sent to you. You will need to inform the university of the date and time of your arrival at least seven days before travelling to Malaysia. You will need to produce this to get a single-entry visa (if required for your home country). All related charges will be your responsibility.

The single entry visa into Malaysia must be completed before arrival once you have received the visa approval letter (VAL). This is only applicable to countries that require visas to travel to Malaysia (eg China). Please check with the Malaysian Embassy/ High Commission if you are unsure.

For more information please visit www.imi.gov.my/index.php/en/main-services/visa

Student pass compliance

You must submit your passport to us no less than six weeks before the expiry date of your student pass in order to be processed in time. If you fail to do so, you may be fined or imprisoned for overstaying by the Malaysian Immigration Department. You will also have to undergo a medical screening for each year of renewal. If you fail to meet either of these requirements you must speak to someone in the Student Office as the university must issue a letter of support on your behalf.

Before you come to study in Malaysia it is important to find out about Malaysian immigration procedures and how they affect you. You should do this as far in advance of your arrival in Malaysia as possible.

Page 11: USMC International student guide

11

In addition you must have an 80 per cent attendance report for the duration of the current student pass validity period and academic results that are at least CGPA2.0 for the duration of the current student pass validity period. If you fail to meet either of these requirements the university must issue a letter of support on your behalf.

Upon entry into Malaysia

– Original passport to be submitted to institution on arrival

– Attend medical screening within seven working days from the date of entry

– EMGS or your institution will obtain the endorsement of the pass for you once you have completed the medical screening
