Tsunami Source Standardization for Hazards Mitigation in the United States (Stephanie Ross-Pacific Coastal and Marine SC; and cooperators from NOAA, the California Geological Survey and the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.) A global synthesis of land-surface fluxes under natural and human-altered watersheds using the Budyko framework (Stacey Archfield and Meredith Reitz-Branch of Regional Research, ER; and cooperators from North Carolina State University and the University of Central Florida.) Columbia Environmental Research Center, Ecology Branch Susan Finger, Bethany Kunz, Greg Linder, and Ed Little received the Federal Highway Administration 2017 Environmental Excellence Award for their research on the toxicity of dust control products used on our Nation’s roads, and the potential impacts of those products on roadside organisms, soil chemistry, and water chemistry. Core Research Center Staff John Rhoades, Terry Huber, Jeannine Honey and Dawn Ivis were presented the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists Distinguished Public Service to Earth Science Award for their contributions in promoting earth science to the general public through the preservation of valuable geologic rock cores. Melissa Masbruch, Christine Rumsey and David Susong Received The American Geophysical Union’s journal Water Resources Research (WRR) 2017 Editor’s Choice Award for their study investigating the effects of climate on groundwater resources and was entitled “Analyses of infrequent (quasi-decadal) large groundwater recharge events in the northern Great Basin: Their importance for groundwater availability, use, and management”. Mark Bonito and Debra Foster Named as one of the top five finalists, in a competition of more than 180 entries, for the George Barley Water Prize competition for their video demonstrating a tabletop version of a filtering technique designed to remove phosphorus from wastewater which has become a fully functional water-treatment system.

Group Recognition (continued) North Central Climate Science Center The Center, which is a partner with the Wind River Tribal Water Engineer’s Office and Water Resources Control Board, received the Climate Adaptation Leadership Award for Natural Resources (Honorable Mention) from the National Fish, Wildlife, and Plants Climate Adaptation Strategy Joint Implementation Working Group for their work in co-producing science for drought preparedness which includes a tribal-driven social-ecological vulnerability assessment and other tools. Northeast Climate Science Center The Center and its cooperators received the Climate Adaptation Leadership Award for Natural Resources from the National Fish, Wildlife, and Plants Climate Adaptation Strategy Joint Implementation Working Group for their development of the Massachusetts Wildlife Climate Action Tool which helps resource managers access information on climate change impacts and vulnerabilities of fish, wildlife and habitats; and explore adaptation actions to promote resilient natural communities. Carol Quesenberry, D. Paco VanSistine and Lisa Binder Received the 2017 Association of Earth Science Editors Outstanding Publication Award, Map/Poster category for their work on Geologic Map of Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado, United States Geological Survey. USA National Phenology Network Jake Weltzin and University of Arizona Cooperators received the Renewable Natural Resources Foundation 2017 Outstanding Achievement Award which honors interdisciplinary achievements with an emphasis on the application of sound scientific practices in managing and conserving renewable natural resources. Individual Recognition Noah Adams Received a recognition award from the National Park Service for his work in reducing aquatic invasive species (AIS) from the ballast water rector. Adam’s work has led to technology that has been licensed to private industry to reduce AIS invasions. Craig Allen Named Ecological Society of America Fellow.

Received the 2018 John Paul Gries Geologist of the Year Award from the South Dakota Chapter of the American Institute of Professional Geologists.

James “Barry” Grand Named the 2016 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Recovery Champion for his exemplary long-term research on two formerly threatened species, the spectacled eider and Alaska-breeding Steller’s eiders. Gerald Guala Received the 2017 Chairman’s Award from the Renewable Natural Resources Foundation (RNRF) for Dr. Guala’s important contributions, especially for his work on the 2016 RNRF Congress on Harnessing Big Data for the Environment. Michael Hansen Received the Jack Christie/Ken Loftus Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions toward Understanding Healthy Great Lakes Ecosystems from the Great Lakes Fishery Commission. Steve Jackson Mr. Jackson, Director of the Southwest Climate Science Center, was recognized as the 2017 Highly Cited Researcher in Environment and Ecology by the Web of Science(WoS). This designation is given to scientists who rank in the top 1% of WoS citations in their respective field. Nile Kemble Received the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry’s (SETC) Regional Chapter Award for his contributions over the last 17 years as an active Board Member, student mentor, and for growing the “central and satellite” location concept for the SETC Ozark Prairie regional conferences. Olivia LeDee Received the Climate Adaptation Leadership Award for Natural Resources (Honorable Mention) from the National Fish, Wildlife, and Plants Climate Adaptation Strategy Joint Implementation Working Group for providing consistent and innova-tive leadership on climate adaptation for Minnesota during her former position with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Olivia helped develop and operationalize the DNR’s Climate Adaptation and Mitigation in Natural Resource Management policy.

Paul Lillis Will receive the George C. Matson Memorial Award from the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) in recognition of the best AAPG paper presented at the 2017 annual convention. Paper is entitled, Application of Oil Gravity and Sulfur Content Relationships to Oil Typing and Source Rock Kinetics. Jeff Marion Received the Boy Scouts of America Philmont Scout Ranch Distinguished Staff Alumni Award for his career of recreation ecology research and development and guidance of the national Leave No Trace program and practices, particularly related to the Boy Scouts of America. Pat McCrory Selected as a 2017 Geological Society of America Fellow. Andrew Michael Was selected President of the Seismological Society of America, the premier scientific professional society dedicated to advancing seismology and the understanding of earthquakes for the benefit of society. Scott Minor Was elected as Fellow of the Geological Society of America for being a nationally-recognized expert in fault mapping, fault kinematics, and structural and hydrogeologic properties of fault zones in some of the most tectonically active and dynamic terranes in the United States. George Plafker Was awarded the Seismological Society of America’s highest honor, the Reid Medal, for his outstanding contributions in seismology or earthquake engineering. Received the Penrose Medal of the Geological Society of America in recognition of eminent research in pure geology, for outstanding original contributions or achievement that mark a major advance in the science of geology.

Carol Quesenberry Received the Excellence in Cartography Award from the Esri User Conference 2017 Map Gallery for her work on the Geologic Map of Great San Dunes National Park (U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Map 3362). Barnett Rattner Selected as a 2017 Fellow of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry for his significant long-term scientific contributions and service and leadership within the Society. Diana Restrepo-Osorio Received the Rusty Leffel Concerned Student Award from the University of Kansas. Award is presented to the student who has demonstrated a real concern to further the ideals of the University and high education. Dennis Staley Received a Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s for his service as a member of the Pioneer Fire restoration effort for the Boise National Forest. He applied USGS models to assess post-fire debris-flow hazards across the 188,000 acre megafire. Debra Taylor Received the Unsung Shero in Federal Service Award from Retirement Planning Strategies, a strong supporter of both women in Federal service and FEW (Federally Employed Women.) This award is given to a woman who is the go-to person who consistently assists with a positive “can do” attitude and exhibits personal responsibility that accomplishes the goal whether it is in a team environment or on her own.

Individual Recognition (continued) Eric Thompson Received the Western States Seismic Policy Council Award in Excellence for his ShakeMap earthquake scenario efforts, among them, developing a catalog of 800+ scenarios for the conterminous United States. Robert Thompson Was elected Fellow of the Geological Society of America for being a major contributor to climate science and science leadership. H. Brian Underwood Received the Cornell Cooperative Extension Onandaga County 2017 Association Cooperator Award for his work to make the deer and tick management projects a success and impactful. Vanessa von Biela Along with coauthors received the 2016 Best Publication in the journal Marine and Coastal Fisheries for their publication “Influence of Basin– and Local-Scale Environmental Conditions on Nearshore Production in the Northeast Pacific Ocean”. This publication tests environmental factors that might affect the growth and development of nearshore fish in the California and Alaska currents. Ean Warren Named as Fellow of the American Chemical Society for his outstanding accomplishments in chemistry and important contributions to the Society, the world’s largest scientific society. Tim Woods Received the Technology Trailblazer award from the Bethesda, Maryland, chapter of the Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association’s for his work to make scientific data and research easily accessible and searchable for the general public through www.usgs.gov.
