1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 GENERAL OVERVIEW The ST2500 Data Communicator is a compact, lightweight, single board microprocessor based VHF transceiver capable of transmitting and receiving short messages by utilizing the Orbcomm Satellite Communication System. The Orbcomm system is a wide area, packet switched, two-way data communication system that utilizes constellations of low-earth orbiting satellites and earth station gateways. Orbcomm subscribers access the gateway and thus, the satellite, via dial up circuits, the Internet or X.25 protocol access systems. The ST2500 is capable of continuous remote operation and delivers geopositional data calculated by measuring the Doppler frequency shift of the satellite downlink during a scheduled pass by the orbiting vehicle.

The ST2500G uses a GPS receiver for fast positioning in cases where better accuracy is required. All other specifications are identical to the ST2500 unit. The purpose of this manual is to provide the user with the data necessary to install, operate, and maintain the ST2500 in order to meet the users requirements.

2 ST2500 SPECIFICATIONS

2.1 Physical Specifications The ST2500 Data Communicator electronics, transceiver, DSP and processor are all mounted on a single board and packaged in an aluminum case. Two LED’s are mounted on the outside of the case allowing operational monitoring of the unit. There are several connectors on the case that allows the connection of the input/output, auxiliary, VHF antenna and the external power supply and battery .

The ST2500 can also be supplied as an OEM board (see para. 4.2.1).

3.1 General All electrical specifications for the ST2500 are presented in Table 3-1, below. These specifications are listed for information only and the manufacturer reserves the right to change unit specifications without prior notice.

3.2 Antenna Specifications The ST2500 is shipped without a VHF antenna. Therefore, the user must select and install an antenna that meets the application needs. The specifications in Table 3-2 are general, but meet the requirements of the ST2500 and the Orbcomm system and will provide optimal performance.

When selecting the antenna site, ensure that the location gives an unobstructed azimuth and elevation line-of-sight. This allows the antenna to locate, lock on, and track the satellite during operation of the Data Communicator. It should be avoided to locate the antenna near reflecting objects which can cause degradation in certain directions.

3.3 Environmental Specifications The ST2500 is designed to operate in a wide temperature range and at harsh environments. The unit will withstand vibration in accordance with SAE Standard J1455. However if the unit is subjected to vibrations that exceed this standard, shock isolation is recommended. Table 3-3 lists the environmental specifications for the unit.

While the ST2500 is certified to meet EMI/RFI standards, certain precautions should be taken when installing its antenna, to ensure proper operation and performance. The antenna and the antenna cable must not be in the proximity of radar installations, other VHF radio antennas, or high-voltage transmission lines or transformer sites.

4 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

4.1 GENERAL The Stellar ST2500 Orbcomm Data Communicator is a VHF data transceiver designed to operate in a wide temperature range and harsh electromagnetic and mechanical environments. The ST2500 provides message transmission and reception, and Geopositional data via the Orbcomm satellite communication system. The ST2500 is designed to be used in wide range of mobile and stationary applications providing telemetry data and remote control capabilities

The unit includes a VHF receiver, a VHF transmitter, data processing subassemblies, a battery (external), and a built-in battery charger. Interface connections for a user supplied antenna, an external dc power supply, user specified data control and processing, and sensor equipment are provided as part of the ST2500.

A separate CPU is responsible for controlling the discreet I/Os, allowing the customer to program the unit with his own written code, thus providing a full “3rd party” application programming capability. The unit also contains communication protocol management, position determination algorithm, “housekeeping“ and application software modules . The ST2500 provides an easy to use 3rd party capabilities for programming the unit by loading the users specific application program code.

4.2 BLOCK DIAGRAM DESCRIPTION

4.2.1 Hardware Configuration

The ST2500 Data Communicator is a rugged single board design allowing the customer to use it as an OEM unit as well as a fully cased unit .

The ST2500 has the following main functions:

VHF receiver, VHF transmitter, power supply, lead acid battery charger, main processor and , signal processing, input/output interfacing and provides positional data processing (GPS or Doppler) capability.

A separate application processor is used for 3rd party programming, I/O interfacing and unit power management.

4.2.1.1 ST2500 - Radio Frequency Section

The Radio Section of the ST2500 consists of two Main sections: receiver and transmitter.

The VHF receiver features dual conversion, high sensitivity and selectivity, and is narrow-band tunable over its frequency spectrum. It receives the satellite downlink signal from the transmit/receive antenna switch. This signal is amplified, filtered, down converted, band limited and demodulated by the quadrature demodulator. The I/Q outputs are sent to the DSP for sampling and processing.

The VHF transmitter consists of a quadature modulator, a power amplifier , and a transmit/receive antenna switch. The transmitter I/Q modulation signals are generated by the DSP and are passed to the transmitter.

4.2.1.2 GPS(BOARD)

The ST2500 incorporates a low power GPS module for positioning. The GPS operation is controlled by the main processor. 4.2.1.3 ST2500 – Main Processor and Signal Processing Section

The main processor is responsible for all the major modem activities: air protocol, serial protocol and also contains Stellar’s embedded applications.

The Signal Processing Section , recovers the clock and other data received by the satellite , measures the Doppler frequency, and synchronizes the internal time base to downlink time tags. The DSP also generates modulation signals for the transmitter modulator (TX/IQ). The Main Processor consists of a microcontroller, timer, and a memory bank.

4.2.1.4 ST2500 Application Processor and I/O Interfaces

The ST2500 Application Processor is used as the system real time clock, provides digital I/O ports, analog inputs ports and is used for power management tasks such as battery charging and power control. The processor is also responsible of running the user application program.

The ST2500 digital and analog I/Os are controlled by the application processor. The digital I/Os are optically isolated (TTL can also be provided), ensuring high immunity to external interference. The application processor is a very low power processor, consuming less than 100µA while in sleep mode (no I/O monitoring, real timer is running) and less than 150µA while monitoring all the I/Os.

The ST2500 is available with one of the two application processors, according to the user requirements.

The processors are based on the ATMEL products (see para. 4.2.1.5):

- AT90LS8535 for small 3rd party applications and for running the embedded Stellar applications.

- ATMEGA103 for large 3rd party applications and for running the embedded Stellar application.

4.2.1.6 I/O and External Interface

See Para. 6.

4.2.1.7 Power Supply

The power supply contains protection and filtering circuitry, DC/DC conversion circuits, and lead acid battery charger electronics. The power necessary for the ST2500 operation is provided by a rechargeable, replaceable battery external to the unit. 4.2.1.8 Battery

The battery terminals on the ST2500 are rated 8-15v. Be careful not to reverse polarize these terminals, as it will damage the unit. These terminals are not protected against reverse polarization in order to allow the battery to be recharged by an external power supply (see above). The unit cannot transmit without power connected at the battery terminals. Any lead acid battery (8-15v) can be used with the ST2500. Stellar supplies 12v/2.1Ah or 8v/2.5Ah batteries.

4.3 3rd Party Applications

4.3.1 General

The 3rd party s/w developer would implement and run his code on the application processor by linking his code with a basic kernel supplied by Stellar. This basic kernel works and communicates transparently through the synchronous serial link with the main processor. The 3rd party s/w developer has the full access to the hardware regarding manipulation of I/Os etc. and the ability to use the Orbcomm serial protocol (which is well defined and documented) a full API is provided thus rendering the unit programming much more user friendly and effective.

4.3.2 Programming

The API is based on two sections, the first one is a collection of easy to use C functions that support I/O manipulation, analog inputs reading, power management and more.

The second API section is a collection of functions that encapsulate the Orbcomm serial protocol thus providing means to send and receive messages get position information and more by using simple C functions.

Development tools: Assembly language development environment can be obtained from the manufacturer, Atmel free of charge. (AVR Studio, can be downloaded from www.atmel.com) C compilers for both processors and In Circuit Emulator can be obtained from the manufacturer.

4.3.3 Hardware

The ST2500 contains two processors: the main processor is responsible for the modem and the network activities and a separate processor is responsible for controlling the discreet I/Os, allowing the customer to program the unit with his own written code, thus providing a full “3rd party” application programming capability.

The communication between the processors is conducted via a synchronous serial link (transparent to the user).

The application processor controls a dedicated asynchronous serial link for communicating with external devices and controlling the unit I/Os (see Figure 4-2).

The main serial port is controlled by the main CPU communicating with Stelcomm or for activating the unit in “byte” mode.

4.4 Digital Inputs Six digital inputs, electrically isolated by an optocoupler are provided (see Figure 4-3). All the six inputs have a common return line, which can be shortened to the unit common by using the onboard jumper J15. A detailed description of the connectors and jumpers is given in Annex B. 4.4.1 Optical Coupling Isolation

Better noise immunity and insensitivity to ground loops are also achieved due to the optical isolation. 4.5 Digital Outputs Six Digital outputs, electrically isolated by optocoupler are provided (see Figure 4-4). All six outputs have a common return line, which can be shortened to the unit common by using the onboard jumper J11. Common external voltage supply input is also available and by shortening the onboard jumper J8 the common voltage would be supplied internally, allowing the use of the digital outputs as a regular TTL level compatible outputs. 4.5.1 Optical Coupling Isolation Optocoupler isolation provides electrical isolation of 2.5 KV between the unit and the user equipment. Better noise immunity and insensitivity to ground loops are also achieved due to the optical isolation. 4.5.2 Power Switch

The power switch output is capable of driving up to 3 A to an external load. It is used primarily to activate an external Radio Modem for the purpose of Dual-Mode functionality. This output can be used also to activate external sensors, etc.

4.6 Analog Inputs Five analog voltage inputs are available for the user. The analog inputs are converted to digital values by the internal Analog to Digital converter in the application processor. The voltage reference, the ADR291 that has a maximum inaccuracy of 1.25% over all the industrial temperature range and the resistor divider accuracy, which is 1%, determines the conversion inaccuracy, 2.25% over all the temperature range. The resistor dividers determine the voltage input range which is 5V and the input impedance, 40Kohms. Clamping diodes protects the analog inputs.

4.7 Internal Analog Inputs Three available analog channels in the Application Processor are used internally to measure temperature, battery voltage and external power supply voltage.

4.8 SOFTWARE

4.8.1 Software Configuration

The software suite necessary for ST2500 operation is embedded in the main processor of the unit. There are four main software modules:

4.8.1.1 Communications Software Module

This module allows the ST2500 to establish uplink and downlink protocols with the Orbcomm satellite communication system and manages all communication functions of the unit.

4.8.1.2 Position Determination Algorithm Module

This module performs the Doppler frequency shift measurement and other Ephemeris satellite data to generate the unit location or getting GPS position when a GPS card is installed.

4.8.1.3 Application Module

This module allows user-defined operating parameters to be set for the ST2500. It is accessed through the StelComm program.

4.8.1.4 Housekeeping Module

This module controls the power-down, sleep mode, and alarm functions. These parameters are accessed, set, or edited via the StelComm program.

This s/w module is executed by the application processor.

These modules are accessible via Stellar’s StelComm program, which is designed for operation of the Data Communicator. The software modules perform the following main functions: • Run the Orbcomm system protocol

• Run serial user equipment interface protocol

• Run application related functions

• Position determination

• Execute self-test

• System initialization

• Run I/O drivers supporting the above functions

• Allowing third party application Programming

5 Installation and Operation

5.1 Unpacking ST2500 is manufactured as an OEM board and as a packaged box. This paragraph relates to the packaged box. With regard to connectors of the OEM board see Annex A and consult with Stellar support.

Table 5-1 is a complete list of the items comprising the ST2500 Data Communicator. In response to a particular customer order, only part of the items mentioned below will be supplied.

Remove the unit from the shipping container. Inventory all parts using the parts list shown in Table 5-1. Inspect all parts for signs of physical damage. Contact Stellar for the replacement of any missing or damaged parts.

5.2 Quick Start Proper operation and configuration of the ST2500 requires a Personal Computer capable of running the Windows 95/98 operating system and loaded with the Stellar Communicator Manager Program (StelComm). This software is not shipped with the ST2500 Data Communicator but is available as a file transfer protocol download (FTP) at www.stellar-sat.com. Once the download is complete, follow the directions in the paragraphs below.

To ensure a proper installation and in order to achieve the desired signal reception refer to para. 5.5.

Note Stellar Communicator Manager Program (Stelcomm) is Windows 95/98/compatible.

5.3 Installation and Testing After mounting the unit, its operation can be tested by using the procedure described below.

• Connect the ST2500 to an external power supply and/or battery .

• Connect the serial cable between the ST2500 communication port and your PC.

• Connect the antenna cable to the unit RF BNC/TNC jack.

• Click on the StelComm icon on the computer desktop. Make sure Stelcomm is communicating with the unit. Unit status can be viewed on the Stelcomm status screen (use Stelcomm Programming Guide for Stelcomm operation).

• Follow instructions on the screen to verify proper operation.

• Close the StelComm program.

• Disconnect the serial cable from the ST2500.

5.4 Installation of StelComm Software Stelcomm software allows ST2500 parameters modification and device configuration according to requirements. The software can be downloaded at www.stellar-sat.com. For additional details see Programming guide at the same Internet site.

After ftp file transfer, a file labeled stel_vXX.zip will appear in your Windows 95/98 Explorer. To install, create a file name and unzip the program. Once the file is unzipped, an icon labeled setup.exe appears on the computer screen. Click on the icon and follow the instructions for installation. The program is now ready to configure the ST2500 Data Communicator.

5.5 Installation of ST2500 Use the procedures discussed in the following paragraphs to install the ST2500.

5.6 Antenna Installation No VHF antenna is shipped with the ST2500. Users can select the appropriate antenna according to the specifications and site requirements discussed in paragraph 3.2 of this manual.

5.7 Battery Installation

While installing the battery the leads should be kept as short as possible. Installation limitations dictate the battery installation method. Stellar can provide the battery in a metal case having the same dimensions as the ST2500 unit. The battery pack can be mounted side by side by using its own mounting brackets.

6.1.3.1 VHF Antenna Interface

The antenna interface is the BNC plug mounted on the ST2500. For proper operation, this interface requires a low-loss 50 Ώ coaxial cable terminated with a BNC jack. This cable carries RF signals from the antenna to the receiver and from the transmitter to the antenna. The antenna is supplied by the user.

7 MAINTENANCE

7.1 Maintenance Procedures Except for battery replacement, the ST2500 is not field repairable. It must be shipped to the factory or to an authorized maintenance facility for repairs.

7.2 Battery Replacement The battery is in a separate case , all you have to do is to disconnect the Battery Pack from the unit and just replace it with new battery pack.

7.2.1 Troubleshooting

In the event that ST2500 does not operate properly after installation, use the data in Table 7-1 to troubleshoot the unit.

Stellar customer service is available and will answer all your questions and provide help to get the best performance of your ST2500.

9.7 Internal Communication The communications between the monitoring and control processor and the main processor are done in two channels. The first one is an asynchronous serial communication channel that is used primarily for the API kernel activity; this channel is transparent to the 3rd developer in a sense that usually no code would have to be written to support this link. The second channel is the RS232 serial communication, this channel is the one used by the 3rd party developer to approach the main processor in order to perform most of the subscriber communicator tasks. For example, sending and receiving messages, retrieving GPS information and getting the modem status, all this is done through the internal RS232 serial communication link.
