User experience design refers to the user’s overall experiencewhen interfacing with a system or a product. This system could

a web site, web application or desktop application. This type of

design focuses on the user satisfaction and providing a betterproduct and services.

The idea of my user experience design is to create a moreuser-friendly library web site for the students in the American

University of Sharjah. The project starts by addressing thepersonas which define the problems faced by a number ofstudents who are using the library web site. Then comes the

ideas for the ideal solutions for these problems.UX Rawan Mahmood / 27884 / DES 300 / Prof.Gaurang Desai / User Experience Design Project / Fall 2010

Personas

Unood (19, Design Management, Sophomore)

• Education oriented, willing to explore around the library and wander through the collections offered.• She is quickly put off or bored if the process of accessing the sources gets too complicated and con-

fusing. Therefore, she prefers a user-friendly and easy experience at the library.• Very able to manage her time in which her efforts are distributed to satisfy her 5 courses.• She is very focused and interested in finding out the integration or link between design and manage-

ment as a discipline.• She is now getting to know the library’s sources through her friends and group colleagues but feelsvery left out because she basically spent her freshman year grounded in her design school only aware of

there resource offerings.• As a sophomore, she is still unaware of the library’s offerings in terms of their collections and thephysical, human and online resources.• Unood uses the library to socialize and meet her friends after classes. She prefers to meet up withher colleagues for their projects in the quite area or the presentation rooms as they hold a more conve-

nient environment for studying.

Unood’s sophomore level courses require group efforts and lots of research. She sometimes struggles to

find the most appropriate and sufficient information to support her researches. For example, her secondyear design management courses require that she finds the link between design and business and relateand interpret it in her research and other assignments. She asks the librarians for specialized help butthey are unable to effectively provide her with the most efficient and useful resources that will respond to

her requirements, and one of the librarians recommends that she uses the subject guides on the librarywebsite which are specified towards the majors. Unood goes to the library website and finds the subjectguides, yet no specific design management subject guide was found. She even tried accessing the

design subject guide and to her disappointment found that the guide only contained search keywords, keydatabases, and core journals, no information was presented about the major itself or the books that dis-cussed design management as a field itself.

Personas

Ayman (18, Computer Engineering, Freshman)

• Sociable• Amply uses technological devices, such as Iphone.• Not focused• Unsure of discipline• Asks around the old students in university•

Free time (still not stressed out)• Outgoing• Takes the basic courses : Math, Physics, NGN 110, chemistry, Writing 101

Ayman missed the peer review class for his WRI101 writing course so the professor asked him to visit thewriting center so they review the draft for him. He did not know about this center and had not heard of it

from any of the older students he tends to socialize with because they do not use it much as well, some ofthem also had no idea where it was located.Ayman tried to visit the library website in order to find any information about the whereabouts of the centerbut he found the website extremely hard to navigate and finding information about the writing center was

extremely difficult, it was not listed on the home page or in any of the drop down menus either. He gave upand decided to go to the library and try to figure out for himself the whereabouts of the center. This provedto be an even harder task for him as he walked around aimlessly unable to locate the center or find any

clear directions about its whereabouts.

Personas

(Reina ,19, Civil Engineering , Junior)

• Time management is an important aspect in her academics• Sure of her discipline (Civil Engineering)• Familiar with the basic facilities in the library• Has a lot of friends• Takes courses in civil engineering

Reina has an important project coming up and she needs the aid of some specific technical journalsin order to understand some concepts and use some of them in her upcoming work. She triessearching through the database search available on the homepage of the library website but shefound that working with the database search was quit complicated and she had to access the entire

journal instead and as she had to plow through journal after journal to receive her information whichmeant she spent hours searching for the information she needed.

Personas

Fadi (17, International Studies, Freshman)

• Interested in his new major.• Quite overwhelmed by the university scene, quite shy.• Knows a few older students at university.• Is taking general courses, including WRI101 and WRI102 that require research.• Is not comfortable with the library resources or facilities.

Fadi had to complete some research for her WRI101 paper, he decided to go to the

library and conduct his research. After asking some of his older friends about thewhereabouts of the library he went there. After Fadi reached the library he remembered her friend’s words that the second floor

contained most of the books that would help her in his research so he went there. Afterreaching the second floor; he was overwhelmed by the number of shelves and booksand had no idea how to start his search and where the relevant books would be.

Fadi was quite shy to ask a librarian or any of the other people or assistants at thelibrary, and he couldn’t see any of his friends around so he decided to access thelibrary website from the one of computer stations to check where and how to find therelevant books for his topic. It took him a while to find the “How Do I” service which

then kept transferring him from page to page to teach him how to find the books on theshelves. This search was tedious and he had to waste a lot of time moving from onepage to another to finally find the information he needed which was well hidden and

scattered in multiple places.
