Electrical requirementsObserve all governing codes and ordinances.A 120 Volt, 60 Hz, AC only, 20 amp fusedelectrical supply is required. (A time-delayfuse is recommended.) It is recommendedthat a separate circuit serving only thisappliance be provided.

GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONSFor all cord connected appliances:The microwave oven must be grounded. In the event of an electrical short circuit, grounding reduces the risk of electricshock by providing an escape wire forthe electric current. The microwave ovenis equipped with a cord having a ground-ing wire with a grounding plug. The plugmust be plugged into an outlet that isproperly installed and grounded.

WARNING – Improper use of thegrounding can result in a risk ofelectric shock.

Consult a qualified electrician or service-man if the grounding instructions are not

completely understood, or if doubt existsas to whether the microwave oven isproperly grounded.Do not use an extension cord. If the powersupply cord is too short, have a qualifiedelectrician or serviceman install an outletnear the microwave oven.

Getting to Know YourMicrowave OvenThis section discusses the concepts behind microwave cooking. It also shows you the basicsyou need to know to operate your microwave oven. Please read this information before youuse your oven.

How your microwave oven worksMicrowave ovens are safe. Microwaveenergy is not hot. It causes food to makeits own heat, and it’s this heat that cooksthe food.

Microwaves are like TV waves or lightwaves. You cannot see them, but you cansee what they do.

A magnetron in the microwave ovenproduces microwaves. The microwavesmove into the oven where they contactfood as it turns on the turntable.

wWARNINGExplosion Hazard

Do not store flammable materials such as gasoline near themicrowave oven.Doing so can result in death, explosion, or fire.

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR MICROWAVE OVEN

The glass turntable of your microwaveoven lets microwaves pass through. Thenthey bounce off a metal floor, back throughthe glass turntable, and are absorbed bythe food.

Microwaves pass through most glass, paper, and plastics without heating themso food absorbs the energy. Microwavesbounce off metal containers so food doesnot absorb the energy.

Microwaves may not reach the center of aroast. The heat spreads to the center fromthe outer, cooked areas just as in regularoven cooking. This is one of the reasons forletting some foods (for example, roastsor baked potatoes) stand for a while aftercooking, or for stirring some foods duringthe cooking time.

The microwaves disturb water moleculesin the food. As the molecules bounce aroundbumping into each other, heat is made, likerubbing your hands together. This is theheat that does the cooking.

NOTE: Do not deep fry in the oven.Microwavable cookware is not suitable andit is difficult to maintain appropriate deep-frying temperatures.

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR MICROWAVE OVEN

For the best cooking results• Always cook food for the shortest cook-

ing time recommended. Check to seehow the food is cooking. If needed, touchADD MINUTE while the oven is operatingor after the cooking cycle is over (see the“Using ADD MINUTE” section).

• Stir, turn over, or rearrange the foodbeing cooked about halfway through thecooking time for all recipes. This will helpmake sure the food is evenly cooked.

Radio interferenceUsing your microwave oven may causeinterference to your radio, TV, or similarequipment. When there is interference, you can reduce it or remove it by:• Cleaning the door and sealing surfaces of

the oven.• Adjusting the receiving antenna of the

radio or television.

Testing your microwave ovenTo test the oven put about 1 cup (250mL) of

cold water in a glass containerin the oven. Close the door.Make sure it latches. Followthe directions in the “Cookingat high cook power” section

to set the oven to cook for 2 minutes. Whenthe time is up, the water should be heated.

• Moving the radio/TV away from themicrowave oven.

• Plugging the microwave oven into adifferent outlet so that the microwaveoven and radio/TV are on differentbranch circuits.

• If you do not have a cover for a dish, usewax paper, or microwave-approved papertowels or plastic wrap. Remember to turnback a corner of the plastic wrap to ventsteam during cooking.

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR MICROWAVE OVEN

Testing your dinnerware or cookwareTest dinnerware or cookware before using. To test a dish for safe use, put it into the ovenwith a cup of water beside it. Cook at 100%cook power for one minute. If the dish getshot and water stays cool, do not use it.Some dishes (melamine, some ceramicdinnerware, etc.) absorb microwave energy, becoming too hot to handle and slowingcooking times. Cooking in metal containersnot designed for microwave use could dam-age the oven, as could containers with hiddenmetal (twist-ties, foil lining, staples, metallicglaze or trim).

Operating safety precautionsNever cook or reheat a whole egg insidethe shell. Steam buildup in whole eggs maycause them to burst and burn you, andpossibly damage the oven. Slice hard-boiledeggs before heating. In rare cases, poachedeggs have been known to explode. Coverpoached eggs and allow a standing time ofone minute before cutting into them.

For best results, stir any liquid severaltimes during heating or reheating. Liquidsheated in certain containers (especiallycontainers shaped like cylinders) maybecome overheated. The liquid may splashout with a loud noise during or after heatingor when adding ingredients (coffee granules, tea bags, etc.). This can harm the oven andpossibly injure someone.

Never lean on the door or allow a child toswing on it when the door is open. Injurycould result.

11

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR MICROWAVE OVEN

Use hot pads. Microwave energy does notheat containers, but heat from the food canmake the container hot.

Do not overcook potatoes. Fire could result. At the end of the recommended cooking time, potatoes should be slightly firm because theywill continue cooking during standing time. After microwaving, wrap potatoes in foil andset aside for 5 minutes. They will finishcooking while standing.

Do not start a microwave oven when it isempty. Product life may be shortened.

If you practice programming the oven, put a container of water in the oven.

It is normal for the oven door to look wavyafter the oven has been running for a while.

Do not use newspaper or other printed paperin the oven. Fire could result.

Do not dry flowers, fruit, herbs, wood, paper, gourds, or clothes in the oven.Fire could result.

12

Do not try to melt paraffin wax in the oven.Paraffin wax will not melt in a microwaveoven because it allows microwaves to passthrough it.

Do not operate the microwave oven unlessthe glass turntable is securely in place andcan rotate freely. The turntable can rotate ineither direction.

Make sure the turntable is correct-side upin the oven. Carefully place the cookware onyour turntable to avoid possibly breaking it.

Handle your turntable with care whenremoving it from the oven to avoid possiblybreaking it. If your turntable cracks or breaks, contact your dealer for a replacement.

When you use a browning dish, the brown-ing dish bottom must be at least 3⁄16 inch(5 mm) above the turntable. Follow thedirections supplied with the browning dish.

Electrical connectionIf your electric power line or outletvoltage is less than 110 volts, cooking timesmay be longer. Have a qualified electriciancheck your electrical system.

Defrosting tips• When using DEFROST, the weight to be

entered is the net weight in pounds andtenths of pounds (the weight of the foodminus the container).

• Only use DEFROST for raw food.DEFROST gives best results when foodto be thawed is a minimum of 0°F (-18°C).If food has been stored in a refrigerator-freezer that does not maintain atemperature of 0°F (-18°C) or below, always program a lower food weight (fora shorter defrosting time) to preventcooking the food.

• If the food is kept outside the freezerfor up to 20 minutes, enter a lower foodweight.

• If the food is kept outside the freezer formore than 20 minutes, and for defrostingready-made food, defrost by time andpower and let stand after defrosting.

• The shape of the package alters thedefrosting time. Shallow rectangularpackets defrost more quickly than adeep block.

• Separate pieces as they begin to defrost.Separated pieces defrost more evenly.

• You can use small pieces of aluminumfoil to shield foods like chicken wings, legtips, and fish tails, but the foil must nottouch the side of the oven. Foil candamage the oven lining.

• Shield areas of food with small pieces offoil if they start to become warm. Makesure the foil does not touch the sides, top,or bottom of the oven.

• For better results, a preset standingtime is included in the defrosting time. This may make the defrosting time seemlonger than expected. (For more informa-tion on standing time, see “Microwavecooking tips” in the “Cooking Guide”section.)

COOKING GUIDE

Microwave cooking tipsAmount of food• If you increase or decrease the amount

of food you prepare, the time it takes tocook that food will also change. Forexample, if you double a recipe, add a littlemore than half the original cooking time.Check for doneness and, if necessary, addmore time in small increments.

Starting temperature of food• The lower the temperature of the food

being put into the microwave oven, thelonger it takes to cook. Food at roomtemperature will be reheated more quicklythan food at refrigerator temperature.

Composition of food• Food with a lot of fat and sugar will be

heated faster than food containing a lot ofwater. Fat and sugar will also reach ahigher temperature than water in thecooking process.

• The more dense the food, the longer ittakes to heat. “Very dense” food like meattakes longer to reheat than lighter, moreporous food like sponge cakes.

Size and shape• Smaller pieces of food will cook faster

than larger pieces and same-shapedpieces of food cook more evenly thanirregularly shaped foods.

• With unevenly shaped foods, the thinnerparts will cook faster than the thicker areas.Place the thinner parts of chicken wingsand legs in the center of the dish.

Stirring, turning foods• Stirring and turning foods distributes heat

quickly to the center of the dish and avoidsovercooking at the outer edges of the food.

Covering foodCover food to:• Reduce splattering• Shorten cooking times• Retain food moisture

All coverings that allow microwaves to passthrough are suitable.

Releasing pressure in foods• Several foods (for example: baked

potatoes, sausages, egg yolks, and somefruits) are tightly covered by a skin ormembrane. This can cause the food toburst from steam building up in themduring cooking. To relieve the pressureand to prevent bursting, pierce thesefoods before cooking with a fork, cocktailpick, or toothpick.

Using standing time• Always allow food to stand for a while

after cooking. Standing time after defrost-ing, cooking, or reheating always improvesthe result since the temperature will thenbe evenly distributed throughout the food.

• The length of the standing time dependson the volume and density of the food.Sometimes it can be as short as the time ittakes you to remove the food from the ovenand take it to the serving table. However, with larger, denser food, the standing timemay be as long as 10 minutes.

4359626.pm6 9/29/98, 3:21 PM50

Page 51: Use And Care and... · You will be killed or seriously injured if you don’t follow instructions. You can be killed or seriously injured if you don’t follow instructions. Your

51

Arranging foodFor best results, distribute food evenly onthe plate. You can do this in several ways:• If you are cooking several items of the

same food, such as baked potatoes, place them in a ring pattern for uniformcooking.

• When cooking foods of uneven shapesor thickness, such as chicken breasts, place the smaller or thinner area of thefood towards the center of the dish whereit will be heated last.

• Layer thin slices of meat on top ofeach other.

• When you cook or reheat whole fish, score the skin – this prevents cracking.Shield the tail and head of whole fish withsmall pieces of foil to prevent overcookingand ensure the foil does not touch thesides of the oven.

• Do not let food or container touch the topor sides of the oven. This will preventpossible arcing.

Using aluminum foilMetal containers should not be used in amicrowave oven. There are, however, someexceptions. If you have purchased foodwhich is prepackaged in an aluminum foilcontainer, then refer to the instructions onthe package. When using aluminum foilcontainers, cooking times may be longerbecause microwaves will only penetratethe top of the food.

If you use aluminum containers withoutpackage instructions, follow these guidelines:• Place container in a glass bowl and add

some water so that it covers the bottomof the container, not more than 1⁄4 inch(6 mm) high. This ensures even heatingof the container bottom.

• Always remove the lid to avoid damageto the oven.

• Use only undamaged containers.• Do not use containers taller than 3⁄4 inch

(19 mm).• Container must be half filled.• To avoid arcing, there must be a minimum

1⁄4 inch (6 mm) between the aluminumcontainer and the walls of the oven andalso between two aluminum containers.

• Reheating food in aluminum foil containersusually takes up to double the time com-pared to reheating in plastic, glass, china,or paper containers. The time when food isready will vary a great deal.

• Let food stand for 2 to 3 minutes afterheating so that heat is spread evenlythroughout container.

Cooking you should not do inyour microwave oven• Do not do canning of foods in the oven.

Closed glass jars may explode, resultingin damage to the oven or possible personalinjury.

• Do not use the microwave oven to sterilizeobjects (baby bottles, etc.). It is difficult tomaintain the high temperature required forsafe sterilization.

Questions and AnswersQUESTIONS

Can I operate my microwave oven withoutthe turntable or turn the turntable over tohold a large dish?

Can I use a rack in my microwave oven sothat I may reheat or cook on two levels ata time?

Can I use either metal or aluminum pansin my microwave oven?

Is it normal for the turntable to turn in eitherdirection?

Sometimes the door of my microwave ovenappears wavy. Is this normal?

What are the humming noises that I hearwhen my microwave oven is operating?

Why does the dish become hot when Imicrowave food in it? I thought that thisshould not happen.

What does “standing time” mean?

Can I pop popcorn in my microwave oven? How do I get the best results?

Why does steam come out of the airexhaust vent?

ANSWERS

No. If you remove or turn over the turntable, you will get poor cooking results. Dishesused in your oven must fit on the turntable.

You can use a rack only if the rack issupplied with your microwave oven. Useof any rack not supplied with the micro-wave oven can result in poor cookingperformance and/or arcing.

Useable metal includes aluminum foil forshielding (use small, flat pieces), smallskewers, and shallow foil trays (if tray isnot taller than 3⁄4 inch [19 mm] deep andat least half filled with food to absorb micro-wave energy). Never allow metal to touchwalls or door. (For more information, seethe “Microwave cooking tips” section.)

Yes. The turntable rotates clockwise orcounterclockwise, depending on the rotationof the motor when the cooking cycle begins.

This appearance is normal and does notaffect the operation of your oven.

You hear the sound of the transformerwhen the magnetron tube cycles on.

As the food becomes hot it will conduct theheat to the dish. Be prepared to use hotpads to remove food after cooking.

“Standing time” means that food should beremoved from the oven and covered foradditional time to allow it to finish cooking. This frees the oven for other cooking.

Yes. Pop packaged microwave popcornfollowing manufacturer’s guidelines or usethe preprogrammed POPCORN pad. Donot use regular paper bags. Use the “listen-ing test” by stopping the oven as soon asthe popping slows to a “pop” every 1 or2 seconds. Do not repop unpoppedkernels. You can also use special micro-wave poppers. When using a popper, besure to follow manufacturer’s directions.Do not pop popcorn in glass cookware.

Steam is normally produced during cooking. The microwave oven has been designed tovent this steam out the top vent.
