American president

• the most powerful position in the world• the commander of the U.S. military• the head of the government ( = office )• can sign or veto laws• chooses federal judges• presents the budget• can give executive orders ( = the same power

as a normal law )

Candidates

• 2 main political parties• Democrats: their symbol – a donkey• more opportunities for middle and working

classes• rich should pay higher taxes• Republicans: their symbol – an elephant• open market, free trade, people less

dependent on the state support

Electoral system

• people elect their electors and these elect the president

• people vote for a person who promises to vote either for a Democrat or a Republican

• the number of electors for each state – equal to the number of senators ( 2 ) and representatives (depends on the population – e.g. California – 55, Alaska – 3 )

Election Day

• comes on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November

• most states traditionally support one party New York, California – Democrats Alabama, Texas – Republicans

• election is decided by „swing“ states (e.g. Florida ), they could swing to either candidate

The winner takes it all

• the candidate for whom more electors vote wins all the votes of a certain state

• who gets majority of the total electoral votes ( that means at least 270 out of 538 ) – becomes President

• he comes to his office on January 20th
