Begin Explore Learn Create Begin Explore Learn Create Begin Explore Learn Create Explore After choosing a Library, use the Search box, any of the Browse modes or the feature buttons to activate the appropriate tool in the Workspace or the Control Panel. All searching and browsing happens in the Library you select. Search: 1. Select a Library using the tabs above the Workspace. 2. Type a keyword or phrase in the Search box and click Go or press Enter. Search Results will appear. 3. Choose a type of content in the Search Results area using the “radio buttons” for Encyclopedia articles, images or multimedia; Encyclopedia articles are listed by default. 4. Click a title in the Search Results list to display the content in the right-hand Workspace. Save sources and take notes: Click at the top of a window to attach a Text Note to the item. Click Save and Close. Any Note you create in a Workspace window will automatically link to the content. When an image or map is enlarged, click the icon on the window’s toolbar to capture it in an Image Note. To view all Notes, open Research Organiser. To open a Note’s source content, double-click the Note in the left pane of Research Organiser. Learn from Internet information: 1. Make sure that you are connected to the Internet. 2. Depending on which Library you’ve chosen, either click Online Search in an article’s Featured Content box or click the Games button above the Workspace. 3. Your default Web browser will open, displaying links to the available online content. Library Tabs Use the tabs above the Workspace to choose a Library in which to Search or Browse. Workspace Collect the content you find in the right portion of the program window. You can have multiple windows open at one time. Choose a Library: Encyclopædia Britannica Library: Advanced level, more information and more articles. Student Library: Intermediate level, plenty of information for most students' needs. Elementary Library: Easiest level, shorter, easy-to-read articles for school and for fun. Choose Search Results: Encyclopedia: Find encyclopedia articles. Images: View pictures and illustrations. Multimedia: Find video, audio and other presentations. Online Content: Use the Online Search link within article windows to find Britannica- selected Web sites, magazine articles and videos online. Get started:• Install the program. See the Installation Instructions in

the program disc case. Be sure to register Britannica2005 to receive updates and benefits.

• To open the program, double-click the EncyclopædiaBritannica 2005 Ultimate Reference Suite icon onyour Desktop.

• To increase text size in articles, open the Tools menu,select Preferences and choose a larger screen textsize.

Browse through alphabetical titles:1. After choosing a Library from the tabs located

above the Workspace, click the Browse buttonabove the Workspace to see the Browse options.

2. Click the A-Zbutton in theControl Panel todisplay analphabetical listof article titles.

Type the first few letters of a word to jump to thatsection of the list.

Browse through history:1. After choosing a Library from the tabs located

above the Workspace, open a Timeline by clickingthe Timelines button.

2. To select a topic for the Timeline, click a label, suchas Exploration, at the bottom of the Timeline. (Inthe Elementary Library, all topics are in oneTimeline.) To see more topics, click the arrows at either endof the topic list. The Event nearest to the date selected on the TimeScale appears in the centre of the Timelinewindow.

3. To step through Timeline events, click the arrows inthe Previous Event or Next Event boxes.

4. To read a related article, click Learn more in theEvent box. An article opens in a separate window.

LearnBritannica 2005 provides a wide range ofinformation in its articles, maps, images and videos.An article can be as brief as a paragraph or as longas a book, with many sections.

Learn from Britannica articles:• To open an article, conduct a Search and click a

link in the Search Results or use any of the Browseoptions. They all link to articles. Articles open inthe Workspace, on the right side of the screen.

• To navigate through previously viewed content inan article, use the forward and back arrows onthe toolbar inside the article window.

• To print an article, click the print icon on thetoolbar inside the article window.

Look up words in the Dictionary:

• Double-click any word in any article to instantlydisplay its Dictionary definition.

Search Tips:

Encyclopedia: ClickAdvanced Search toturn on search optionssuch as 'Exact phrase'or 'Matching titlesonly'.

Dictionary/Thesaurus:Use singular wordsand known phrases.

Browse Tip:

BritannicaBrainstormer is onlyavailable whenyou’ve selected theEncyclopædiaBritannica Libraryusing the tab abovethe Workspace.

Browse with Britannica Brainstormer™ : 1. Choose the Encyclopædia Britannica Library tab

above the Workspace.

2. Click the Brainstormer button above theWorkspace. The Britannica Brainstormer opens ina Workspace window.

3. Click any topic in the Brainstormer window tocentre it. New, related topics cluster around thecentred “target” topic.

4. Click a centered topic that displays the article iconto open the article in the Workspace. (See the Helpfile within the program for more information.)

Date:The current date setting. Click the arrows to stepthrough time.

Time Scale: Drag toselect thedate.

Topics:Click tochoose atopic.

Related Article Content:

Table of Contents: Listof all sections of anin-depth article.

Index Entry: Displaylinks to other articleson the related topics.

Media: Flags, imagesand maps associatedwith the article.

Statistics: Data relatedto articles aboutnations.

3. Media displays an alphabetical list of audio and video clips. Classics lists notable pieces from three centuries of Britannica articles. Year in Review features articles fromBritannica’s Book of the Year series.4. To read an article, click any title in the Search Results area.

1. After choosing a Library from the tabs located above the Workspace, clickthe Atlas button. The World Atlas is different in each Library and the mapslink to different articles.

2. Click a “hot” label on the map to open either an article from the currentLibrary or another map. Additional maps or articles related to the mapyou’re viewing can be accessed via the Links tab at the right of the Atlas.

3. Additional tabs may appear at the bottom of the map, indicating links tothematic maps (e.g., land use, precipitation).

Topics: Click a related topic tocentre it.

View Article: Click a centredtopic that has an "article"icon at its left in order todisplay the article in aWorkspace window.
