PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD/C READINGS: Isaiah 50:4-7; Philippians 2:6-11

GOSPEL: Luke 23:1-49

Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish

Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.

Morning Prayer is a time of quiet and reflection each day of Holy Week as we step, day by day, on our journey from dark to the Light. [See page two for times.]

Penance is best celebrated before Holy Thursday evening so that, with heart and mind renewed, all may focus on the celebration of the Paschal Mystery.

The Sacred Paschal Triduum of Thursday of the Lord’s Supper, Passion and the Resurrection of the Lord shines forth as the high point of the entire liturgical

year. The Triduum [Three Days] begins with the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper.

Holy Thursday: Unity is expressed by the single celebration of an evening Eucharist in which the whole parish community gathers to participate in the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. In our parish, that means all three communities of Sts Bernard, Catherine and Martin gather at one church. All priests in the community are encouraged to celebrate together with the gathered community. Project Compassion gifting is usually taken up during the Mass. Bells ring out for the Gloria and then fall silent until the celebration of the resurrection. Apart from the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper all Masses are prohibited.

Friday of the Passion of the Lord [Good Friday]: All Masses, all celebration of the Sacraments is strictly prohibited, except for Penance and Anointing of the Sick, though these are better celebrated prior to Holy Thursday. The liturgy begins and ends in silence. The Liturgy of the Word includes readings, The Passion according to John, homily and Solemn Intercessions. This is followed by Adoration of the

Cross, by the priest, Holy Communion and General Adoration.

Holy Saturday is a time of waiting, prayer and preparation for what is to come. Our Catechumens, the Elect, Barbara, Lewis and Jason, and candidates Kevin and Sally will spend the morning in prayer and preparation for their initiation in the evening.

Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord. We begin this holy feast at The

Easter Vigil in the Holy Night.

1. Solemn Beginning: The Blessing of the Fire, Procession and The Exultet 2. Liturgy of the Word: Readings, Psalms, Gloria, Homily 3. Baptismal Liturgy: Litany, Blessing of Water, Baptism, Confirmation,

Renewal. 4. Liturgy of Eucharist: First Communion for our newly Confirmed. 5. The Concluding Rites: Dismissal with Great Alleluia!

NGUYET FROM VIETNAM Nguyet is a teenager living with a

disability in a small town in Vietnam.

She lived the first 14 years of her life isolated at home.

Her disability restricted her movements and any

chance of going to school.

The future appeared bleak for Nguyet, until a Caritas Australia program, implemented by our partner Catholic Relief Services (CRS) changed her life forever. Around 4,000 people have now benefitted from this inspiring Caritas program Two years after she featured in Project Compassion 2017, Nguyet has built a successful online business selling T-shirts, accessories and home-cooked snacks made by her sister. “I can go out independently now,” Nguyet says. “I would like to have my own shop in the village one day. And I hope that other people with disabilities in Vietnam will receive help like I did." Please donate to Project Compassion and give children living with disabilities in Vietnam the opportunity for education and inclusion in their community.

ANZAC DAY:

ANZAC Day Mass will be celebrated at St Bernard’s Church, 7.00 am on Thursday 25th April.

From Sr Mary

Coloe, pbvm,

During Liturgical Year C, the Palm Sunday Gospel is the Passion according to Luke. While all the evangelists narrate the events of Jesus’ Passion, each one

has its own d i s t i n c t i v e emphasis and it can be helpful to read or listen to the

accounts attentive to these differences. On Sunday, we listen to Luke, and then on Friday we always have the Passion according to John – two very different interpretations of the meaning of Jesus’ death. How often do we find ourselves saying or thinking, ‘It’s not fair’? Luke’s emphasis in his passion story is that Jesus is innocent – that his death is undeserved – that it’s not fair. Pilate says, ‘I find no case against this man.’ After sending Jesus to Herod, Pilate says again

that he found no case against him, and neither had Herod. Even the soldiers who crucify him say, ‘This was a great and good man.’ Jesus is innocent. When reading Luke’s account, realise that while based on the historical fact of Jesus’ crucifixion by Rome, Luke elaborates on what happened for a theological purpose, and even as part of a preaching strategy to make the Christian message more acceptable. Jesus’ innocence makes his words of forgiveness more powerful. Because he is the one who h a s s u f f e r e d undeservedly, he is the one able to pray, ‘Forgive them’. Jesus knows his innocence, but rather than enter into the spiral of violence he entrusts his life into God’s hands. He does not ask God for retribution for his tormentors; he has faith that a loving God is somehow present within the mystery of his suffering. We all face this choice in different situations – be part of Jesus’ choice for peace and forgiveness, or be part of ongoing violence.

♫ PROCESSIONAL: ALL GLORY LAUD AND HONOUR Refrain: All glory, laud and honour to you, Redeemer King,

to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.

1. You are the King of Israel, and David’s royal Son, now in the Lord’s name coming, the King and blessed One. (Refrain)

2.` The company of angels are praising you on high, as we and all creation exultant make reply. (Refrain)

3. The people of the Hebrews, with palms before you went; our praise and prayer and anthems before you we present. (Refrain)

FIRST READING: Isaiah 50:4-7 RESP. PSALM: MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU ABANDONED ME? Response: My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?

1. All who see me deride me. They curl their lips, they toss their heads. ‘He trusted in the Lord, let him save him: let him release him if this is his friend.’ R/

2. Many dogs have surrounded me, a band of the wicked beset me. They tear holes in my hands and my feet, I can count every one of my bones. R/

3. They divide my clothing among them. They cast lots for my robe. O Lord, do not leave me alone, my strength, make haste to help me. R/

4. I will tell of your name to my brethren and praise you where they are assembled. ‘You who fear the Lord give him praise; all sons of Jacob, give him glory. Revere him, Israel’s sons.’ R/

GOSPEL: Luke 23:1-49 ♫ COMMUNION: SHEPHERD OF SOULS 1. Shepherd of souls, in love, come feed us, life giving bread for

hungry hearts! To those refreshing waters lead us where dwells that grace your peace imparts. May we, the wayward in your fold, by your forgiveness rest consoled.

2. Life giving vine, come feed and nourish, strengthen each branch with life divine; ever in you O may we flourish, fruitful the branches of the vine. Lord, may our souls be purified so that in Christ we may abide.

4. Following you, O Lord, who led them, multitudes thronged the mountain side; filled with compassion, Lord, you fed them, fed them with loaves you multiplied. Come, feed us now, O Lord, we pray; life giving bread give us this day.

5. Father, who fed the Hebrew nation, giving them manna from the sky, give now the bread of our salvation, that we who eat shall never die. We are your people, God, in need; may we on living bread now feed.

6. Help us, dear Lord, prepare a dwelling worthy of you who made us all; cleanse then our hearts, our guilt dispelling, purify us who heed your call. “Take this and eat” were words you said, giving yourself to be our bread.

♫ RECESS. HYMN: GLORY IN THE CROSS 1. Let us ever glory in the cross of Christ who

redeems us with his blood. Let us tell the story of the cross of Christ and the pow’r of his saving love. Like a lamb he was slain; he carried our shame, to show us the mercy of God. Let us ever glory in the cross of Christ and the triumph of God’s great love.

2. Let us bring our burdens to the cross of Christ who has known our sorrow and tears. In the great compassion of the heart of Christ, God has walked in our hopes and fears. He was mocked and betrayed, deserted by friends, and banished to die among thieves. Let us ever glory in the cross of Christ and the triumph of God’s great love.

3. Let us kneel in homage at the cross of Christ where we see God’s human face. We behold the Maker of the sun and stars as he hangs on the throne of grace. As we share in his pain, his sorrow and shame, our hearts will be tested in fire. Let us ever glory in the cross of Christ and the triumph of God’s great love.
