2 UPNAAI NEWS2 UPNAAI NEWS

I must admit that I immediately envisioned the blue ocean with frolicking but daunting waves when I got the 2015 “Save the Date” flyer during our August 2014 convention in New York City and saw the 2015 UPNAAI convention theme “Transforming the Future: Waves of Change, Oceans of Opportunity.” I must be honest, too, that the “oceans of opportunity” portion was more difficult to conceive as what came into my mind was a vast body of water

that seemed deep and knew no bounds. In what ways are these imagery similar to the situation we currently face in our nursing careers? Pulling some thoughts from my editorial message last year, our nursing profession has undergone major changes from simple bedside care decades ago, to actually being placed in the driver’s seat in our current complicated health care delivery system. Gone are the days when nurses took subservient roles and acted as the end receivers in the healthcare ballgame. As the Institute of Medicine 2010 landmark report described, nurses are in the forefront of delivering patient-centered care. Focusing on patient-centeredness expects the best from us as we strive to deliver quality care and safety to our patients. We can no longer sit on our current knowledge and skills base and expect to deliver best care to those we have committed to serve. With the dizzying trajectory of technology transcending our nursing territory, we are expected to attain and improve competencies in our respective specialties. We can no longer just focus on our task-list until our shift is over. We are expected to refocus from the routine demands of our shiftwork to achieve health outcomes for our patients. We are expected to be ‘knowledge workers’ who can critically think and clinically reason. The vital signs we take are not mere numbers to be charted in the patient health record or to be reported during shift change. We are expected to pull out information from these common data, other presenting signs and symptoms, and lab and diagnostic results to formulate the knowledge that guides appropriate nursing judgment. Current changes in the health care system dictate that we need to participate in policy-making so that we can directly influence health care delivery and actively engage in evidence-based practice. As Benner advocates in her stand to “radically transform nursing education“ (Benner, Sutphen, Leonard & Day, 2010), nurses should endeavor to advance their education and prepare themselves to improve patient care outcomes in an increasingly complicated healthcare system. Moreover, we are expected to reach out globally through medical missions, humanitarian work, and disaster responses because of our professional training and mission to support individuals, families, and communities. Are these role changes overwhelming? Yes, they can be, especially so when each of us deals with other priorities in our lives. On the other hand, we do not want opportunities to pass us by. Never has there ever been a time when more options are presented to us as nurses. We need to seize opportunities masked underneath the nursing challenges we face and excitedly ride on the crest and troughs of these waves of change. We are the change agents, as our beloved University of the Philippines institution has honed us. As policy makers we are empowered to influence the direction of health care delivery within our respective practice settings and in our communities. As educators, we can promote health and wellness by supporting the shift from acute to preventive model of care so we can target the grassroots before they grow wild and unyielding. As leaders, we are in the forefront to implement changes in our practice settings that will bring about better outcomes. As competent and compassionate nurses, we can embrace technology and harness the power of informatics to deliver quality patient care and safety in a caring manner. As collaborators, we can be crucial team members whose nursing judgment is strongly sought to make team decisions. In short, we can actively engage in our respective clinical, research, education, and administrative settings and seize countless opportunities to transform health care delivery across our clientele. Now is the time to gleefully surf these waves of change and dive through the vast ocean of opportunities underneath.

WINTER 2014 - 2015 3

SURF’S UP: RIDING THE WAVES OF TRANSFORMATIONAL CHANGE“For I am the Lord your God, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar - the LORD Almighty is his name." Isiah 51:15 (NIV)

Message from the President

Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends,

Surf’s up in Southern California, the venue for the University of the Philippines Nursing Alumni Association International’s 36th Annual Convention on August 7-8, 2015. It is known for its beaches and for surfing—the art of riding waves. It is a fitting venue for this year’s convention theme “Transforming the Future: Waves of Change, Oceans of Opportunity.”

If you take a class on surfing, you’ll be taught how to choose the right equipment and how to use it properly, how to recognize a “surfable” wave, how to catch a wave and ride it as long as possible, and most importantly, how to get off a wave without wiping out. Catching waves require surfing courage, perseverance, agility, stamina, ability to focus, & other skills. For someone like me who does not even know how to ride a bike, riding the waves can seem incredibly daunting.

In an effort to charter the course for optimal impact & foster UPNAAI’s viability and sustainability, UPNAAI, its Board of Directors (2014-2015), advisers, and consultants are currently navigating through unchartered waters and riding the waves of transformational change—a shift in the business culture of the organization resulting from a change in the underlying strategy and processes that the organization has used in the past and in response to changes in technology. I believe that transformational change is the key to unlocking UPNAAI’s unparalleled opportunity for growth and can be instrumental in creating successful momentum.

UPNAAI’s foundation will determine both its size and strength. Since one can never build larger than what the foundation can handle, it is imperative that this administration’s immediate priority be focused on building, strengthening, & expanding UPNAAI’s foundation to help sustain her growth, achieve lasting organizational health, and, by the grace of God, usher in her full potential for optimal impact at the local, regional, national, & international level through transformational leadership and succession planning, clarity of and connection with purpose, congruency of mission, creation of value, improved performance and productivity, social entrepreneurship, increased innovation and creativity, greater engagement and loyalty, higher level of commitment and motivation, and forward thinking. It is also vital to have clear & effective communication, increased strategic alliances and collaborations, continual learning, building a group of change agents and self-directed leaders, and to focus on how to be—how to develop character, principles, values, quality, , mind-set, courage, and authenticity.

I wish to express my deepest appreciation and gratitude to all the hard working and dedicated officers and members of the Board of Directors, advisers, consultants, alumni, and friends for their invaluable contribution to UPNAAI and towards achieving all the goals and aspirations for 2014-2015 listed below that I humbly shared with you at the onset of my term as UPNAAI President. We are well on our way towards accomplishing all of them

1. Pursue academic excellence through continuing education, research, networking, publication, and service.

• The Education and Research Committee chaired by Dr. Edmund Pajarillo’79 (UPNAAI’s 1st Vice President) was tasked to review and update the annual breakfast educational conference’s policy and procedure (P and P); the revised version was reviewed and approved by the board on February 2014. There were various revisions including the change of the “annual UPNAAI reunion” to “annual UPNAAI Convention” & the breakfast educational seminar was changed to breakfast educational conference.

• UPNAAI had a very successful and well-attended breakfast educational conference on August 1, 2014 during UPNAAI’s 35th annual convention & Coral Jubilee at the Wyndham New Yorker Hotel in New York, New York. There were thirteen research poster presentations including one from a faculty member of the University of the Philippines Manila College of Nursing, Josephine Enderio Cariaso’79. As a continuing education provider (CE Provider #6961), UPNAAI awarded 3.8 contact hours to those who attended the educational conference and submitted their completed evaluation forms. The 2014 convention theme was “Global Leadership: Breaking Barriers.” There were five excellent guest speakers including Dr. Dula Faraon Pacquiao, EdD, RN, CTN-A, TNS—UPNAAI’s 2014 Julita V. Sotejo Medallion of Honor Awardee and a member of Class of 1968 who delivered the keynote presentation. The following four course objectives were met at the conclusion of the educational conference:

◊ Describe barriers to nursing leadership and provide examples to make a difference in the global arena;

◊ Explain social action, its requisite activities, and competencies to achieve global leadership in healthcare as clinician, educator, consultant, and researcher;

◊ Explore nursing’s leadership role in telemedicine and identify some barriers and resolutions to address them; and

◊ Describe common medical conditions encountered during the disaster relief efforts and the challenges and opportunities for disaster nursing response and recovery in the Philippines.

• The Academic Enhancement Fund Program (AEFP) Committee chaired by Rhodora Maligalig was tasked to review the resolution that created the AEFP to assess if it’s still relevant in meeting UPNAAI’s objectives of supporting UPCN in maintaining its high academic standards and its leadership in nursing education.

• The AEFP Committee was tasked to create the new P and P for the AEFP which will be submitted to the board for review and approval by May 1, 2015.

• Created the Task Force on Financial Viability and Sustainability (TFFVS)— one of its tasks is to discuss possible sources of funding for the AEFP and other revenue-generating and money-saving initiatives

• Received two pledges to provide initial funding for the AEFP of $1000.00 each.

• The procedure for approval of Request for Grant (RFG) was reviewed and a new RFG Form was created

• The Ad Hoc Committee on Scholarship Selection & Award chaired by Jessie F. Ivins’69 was tasked to create the new P and P for scholarship selection and award which was reviewed and approved by the board on December 13, 2014

• The Editorial Board of the UPNAAI Nursing Journal chaired by Josie Villanueva’67 published an excellent and highly informative issue of the journal prior to the 35th UPNAAI Convention. The Nursing Journal, a peer-reviewed magazine, is UPNAAI’s official publication for nursing practice, education, and research. It is published annually and is registered in the library of Congress. It is evaluated and approved for indexing by the CINAHL, Information Systems databases of nursing, and allied health literature. It is published annually and released in August in time for UPNAAI’s Annual Convention and circulated to members worldwide.

• In November 2014, in response to Dean Lourdes Tejero’s 10/22/14 request for funds intended for different UPCN accreditation-related projects & the three researches necessary to comply with the March 2015 level two accreditation requirements of the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (UPCN did not have sufficient funding for these in its operating budget), the UPNAAI board approved the transfer of the following UPNAAI funds to UPCN coursed through the UPCN Foundation Inc. (1) $1,773.00 to pay for the 6-month salary of a project assistant who will help UPCN prepare for the PAASCU Level 2 accreditation; (2) $1,700.00 to fund the research entitled “Competency Assessment in the Nursing Curriculum: A Product Evaluation Approach (Proponents: Arnold Peralta, MAN, MHPEd, RN and Luz Barbara P. Dones, MP, RN). The UP Nurses of the East Coast(UPN-EC) Chapter donated $136.00 to UPNAAI (in addition to the $1000.00 held in trust by UPCNFI) to fully fund the research project entitled “Factors Affecting Student Attrition at the UPNCN (Proponent: Erwin William Leyva, MPH, RN). UPNAAI’s DelMarVa Chapter donated $300.00 to fully fund the research entitled “Alumni Tracking System.” The funds were turned-over in person to UPCN through UPCNFI on December 12, 2014 by Iren Roldan, UPNAAI Treasurer.

• The University of the Philippines Foundation, Inc. (UPFI) acknowledged receipt of the UPCN Class of 1979’s 2014 donation coursed through UPNAAI intended for the UPCN Class 1979 Faculty Educational Endowment Fund thereby increasing the fund balance held in trust by UPFI to approximately $38,113.41 plus allocated earnings (October 29, 2009-December 31, 2014). Two deductions were made from the allocated earnings as follows: (1.) PhP Pesos 86,000.00 (Grant to Mr. Erwin William Leyva) and (2) PhP Peso 55,000.00 (Grant to Peter James B. Abad).

• UPCNFI acknowledged receipt of the $10,000.00 donation from UP-PGHSN and UPCN Class of 1969 coursed through UPNAAI for the purpose of purchasing and updating audio-visual equipment for the UPCN’s Auditorium and the Seminar room.

• Introduced over a dozen BSN’79 alumni to Dean Lourdes Tejero during UPNAAI’s 35th anniversary—these alumni were able to help Dean Ludy as guest speakers in the PhD class at UPCN after the reunion. UPCN’s

2. Increase UPNAAI’s life, associate, and annual membership by at least 6% from January 2014 to December 2015.

• We’ve exceeded this goal one year ahead of schedule by increasing the life, associate, and annual membership by 8% in 2014—UPNAAI gained 55 new members (43 life members, 3 associate members, & 9 annual members). Between January1– March 5,, 2015, we gained 4 more new life members. UPNAAI's membership has increased by leaps and bounds—It now has a total of 757 members (including 4 new 2015 life members and 4 new 2015 annual members.

• Implemented membership recruitment initiatives through the UPNAAI’s Membership Committee chaired by Gloria Amayun Smitka’69, the 2014 jubilarian and non-jubilarian class coordinators, board members, advisers, and other UPNAAI members and utilized the UPNAAI.org website, word of mouth, printed brochures, electronic and printed copies of the UPNAAI News, yearbook, social media e.g facebook, and e-mail blasts to recruit new members.

6. Develop and implement a strategic plan to foster a seamless leadership transition through succession planning and creating a framework to facilitate the transfer of critical and relevant explicit and tacit knowledge held within the previous leadership and other influential relationships to enhance UPNAAI’s longevity and viability.

• This is a work in progress. The creation, review, and approval of numerous P & Ps and other ongoing initiatives will help attain this goal.

7. Build and develop a healthy and highly effective leadership team with a holistic organizational perspective that’s geared towards delivering the highest quality service with integrity, fulfilling UPNAAI’s strategic priorities while managing finances conservatively, and finding solutions or creating and implementing strategies that best serve the organization, its members, UPCN, and the community.

• We are in the process of attaining this goal.

• Since UPNAAI, which has been a 501(c)(3) organization since 2009, has never applied for the NY state & local sales tax exemption, the completed application form and 44 pages of supporting documents were submitted to the NY State Tax Board prior to the reunion in New York. The “Exempt Organization Certificate“(ST-119) was issued to UPNAAI by the New York State Tax Board on August 4, 2014. The completed ST-119.1 form was submitted to The Wyndham New Yorker Hotel’s Comptroller within 90 days of the reunion; subsequently, the venue reimbursed UPNAAI the $3,461.00 for the sales tax incurred during the August 2015 reunion in N.Y.

• Negotiated the cost of the audio-visual rental for the 3 UPNAAI events at The Wyndham New Yorker Hotel with Metro Multimedia & its General Manager, who consented to charging UPNAAI just 1/3 of the original cost (approximate total AV rental fees of $1,510.00 + tax) for all of the 3 events instead of the original charge of over $4,500.00 thereby saving UPNAAI at least $3,000.00 in audio-visual rental cost.

• Recommended the purchase of audio – visual equipment (except for the huge screens) that UPNAAI usually rent yearly to save on the annually recurring A-V rental costs. The board approved the purchase at the August 2014 Governing Board meeting.

• Created the Task Force on Financial Viability and Sustainability during the August 2014 Governing Board meeting.

• Converted the 50:50 gross-revenue sharing of alumni yearbook ads solicited by the host chapter to 50:50 net-revenue (profit) sharing.

I humbly commit 2015 to our faithful and gracious Lord. I pray that the Spirit of God anoints our UPNAAI community with love, joy, and peace; that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith, and that we, being rooted and established in love, may have the power to grasp or comprehend how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. I pray the Lord’s continuous blessing on UPNAAI in her quest to reach her optimum potential as she constructs an empowering organizational culture that nurtures self-reliance, long-term thinking, and transformational leadership that not only improves productivity and performance but also makes a lasting, positive difference within the UPNAAI community and in other people’s lives by developing a strong sense of purpose, compassion, stewardship, character, and a godly perspective; as UPNAAI shapes and delivers transformational change and pursues sustained improvement in organizational health performance that requires moving beyond structures, processes, and systems to address individual and collective behavior by designing interventions to develop self-directed leaders and help them become agents of change; and as UPNAAI builds skills, capabilities, and competencies, improves team and group dynamics, manages talents effectively, and shifts mind-sets.

Let us remember Charles Handy’s words, “The world keeps changing. It is one of the paradoxes of success that the things and the ways which got you where you are, are seldom those that keep you there.”

Changes and challenges are opportunities. Unparalleled opportunity lies ahead for UPNAAI. Surf’s up all the way to UPNAAI’s lasting growth and optimal impact. Mabuhay ang UPNAAI and congratulations to our 2015 Jubilarians!

UPCN Class of 1967 Alumni Gift to Fund the Operation of the UPCN Nursing Clinic Given in Honor & Memory of Garlon "Sonny Icasas"

My warmest greetings to all the alumni of the University of the Philippines. It’s a pleasure to address you, the alumni—the strongest ally of our alma mater. Years have passed since your graduation from our University, but as more years pass, the more ardent becomes the desire to reach back. We are deeply grateful for that. Many of you have physically come to UP to share and impart your gained expertise but still more have extended their support from a distance. The miles did not matter for a desire to give back to our beloved UP.

At present, we face several challenges in view of the developments in education in the Philippines and Asia. Our country has recently implemented the K-12 which stands for Kindergarten to Grade 12. Children are now required to complete 12 years before they enter colleges or universities which are now being delineated. The UP College of Nursing is currently reviewing and revising the curriculum towards an outcomes-based education, taking into consideration the K-12 system and the ASEAN integration in 2015. Nursing is one of the first seven professionals who will freely practice in any of the ASEAN countries. Hence, the Philippine Qualifications framework and the ASEAN Qualifications Framework have been formulated to unify the levels based on the competencies of the professionals from different countries with varying educational systems. All these impact on our Nursing program and UPCN is working towards improving the landscape in Nursing practice through revising our curriculum to be outcomes-based, K-12 and PQF ready in the light of the ASEAN integration in 2015. The UPCN faculty are also working closely with CHED for the revision of the national curriculum and we also form part of the Philippine Professional Nursing Roadmap coalition and are authors for the National Core Competencies Standards.

On top of these academic concerns, we are actively engaged in research which include national studies on non-communicable diseases, evaluation of government programs for nurses, health human resource, policy studies, among others. We have established Memoranda of Agreement with several universities abroad – Seton Hall University in New Jersey, Mahidol University of Thailand, and other Asian Universities. We are now working on the MOU with Johns Hopkins University and the Dean of the JHU School of Nursing together with some graduate students will be coming over to UPCN towards the end of this year. Nagoya University of Japan sponsors our students and faculty for a Cross-Cultural Exchange Program for 3 years now; Soka University started this year to send their students and faculty to UPCN and they want to continue their practicum with us for the following years. We are also working towards becoming a chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society in Nursing with our UP Honor Society already established.

All of these would not come into reality without the strong support from our alumni. This palpable support from alumni worldwide has always inspired me and all of us at UPCN. A number have come back to Manila to offer their expertise through lectures, online training, etc. often pro bono. Many have pooled their resources together to fund specific projects of the College including supporting the continuous faculty training and development. I have met with a number of our alumni in the USA recently and specific batches have signified their readiness to support student needs.

We are highly indebted to our generous alumni. UPCN will not be the way it is now without all of you. Thank you very much! J

to meet the minimum number of 20 members who are UP nurses. It is obvious that the group is close to meeting their target. Vladi’s search of the regional coverage for the NW/SW regions of the US resulted in the inclusion of the Rocky Mountain Region and the Pacific States. The states covered are:Rocky Mountain Region (RMR): AZ, CO, ID, MT, NM, NV, UT, and WY The Pacific States (PS): AK, CA HI, OR, and WA

The group agreed on the proposed chapter name as UPNAA-RMRPSC which stands for the University of the Philippines Nursing Alumni Association-Rocky Mountain Region-Pacific States a.k.a. HUWAWCINNAMON (acronym for Hawaii, Utah, Wyoming, Alaska, Washington, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Montana, Oregon, and Northern California). The writer acknowledges the Santos’ creativity in coming up with the unique acronym.

The Constitution and By Laws (CBL) drafted by Vladi, has been reviewed by Marlene Chance, Jesusa “Toots” Czach, Nelson Borrero, and this writer who anticipates that by spring the group is ready to elect its officers and the process for chapter application will follow. There is no doubt that this new chapter in formation will be installed in California at the UPNAAI’s 36th annual convention. J

DEAN TEODORA A. IGNACIO'S 93rd BIRTHDAYLuz Buenavista Tungpalan, BSN'63, MA'76, former UPCN Dean

Without the shadow of a doubt, Dean Teodora A. Ignacio is the compleat University of the Philippines College of Nursing (UPCN) alumna. One of the first graduates of the BSN (post-basic) course, she was hand-picked to become a member of the UPCN faculty. Dean Sotejo referred to her as a "thinker." Aside from becoming UPCN Alumni Association (UPCNAA) president, she was UPCN dean. The UPCN Foundation is her brainchild. All these years, she has always been there for us, former students and UPCN alumni.

She turned 93 on November 9, 2014. On November 11, 2014, several of us went to 725 Major Samala St, Binakayan, Kawit, Cavite to wish her all the best for this new year. It was a lovely day. We rode in the College vehicle and enjoyed the non-stop reminiscences of life at the College of Nursing way back when and got to Binakayan in time for lunch. We brought lumpiang sariwa and mushroom siopao plus rosquillos, but Dean Dora and Ruby (her niece) had a feast waiting for us.

Dean Ignacio is doing very well, thank God. Ramrod straight, although she keeps a cane with her. Her memory is still sharp. She stays with Ruby at the latter's house now - they both have houses in the compound where there are a lot of fruit trees, vegetables, and flowering plants. Such a calming atmosphere.

We tarried at lunch because there was so much to partake of, to "taste", and also because of the insistence of our hosts. Let the pictures do the talking....

A LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP

LUZ MARTINEZ LATUS

On a sunny July afternoon, prior to the University of the Philippines Nursing Alumni Association International's (UPNAAI, Inc.) momentous Coral Jubilee celebration in New York, Rudy and Lyvia Villegas, and Merle Borrero and I, visited Luz and Bernard (Bud) Latus at their San Diego home. This was an opportunity to present Luz the Coral Jubilee award which reads: “LUZ M. LATUS, President 1992 – 1993, in appreciation of and as a testimony of her meaningful role in building a strong and united global UPNAAI that is celebrating a significant milestone—35 years of excellence.” With Bud by her side, Luz held the crystal trophy with such manifest admiration. The profound joy at seeing the organization she helped fashion arrive at this milestone was all written in her countenance, forgetting at least for a moment the enormous physical pain brought about upon by her ailment.

Luz was an active and very committed UPNAAI member. The first meeting she presided as president of the University of the Philippines Nursing Alumni Association of California (UPNAAC, Inc.) in 1992 was spent listening to her team’s clamor to formally expand the association beyond the borders of California. She sought my assistance for recommendations to have a very dynamic group that could respond to a new healthcare environment and changing paradigm. It was during her presidency that the Constitution and By Laws were revamped, UPNAAC was changed to UPNAAI, and its scope from a statewide to a nationwide organization. It was after her term that the Secretary of State of California approved the new name and scope. The term “lifetime members” were changed to “life members,” with the board’s unanimous consent that life members’ names will continue to be honored in the membership roll every year even after their life time. “Life membership” referred to the life of the association, not the life time of the individuals. Luz was loyal and devoted to the organization. She defended its integrity when UPNAAI was under unfounded scrutiny, and drove all the way from San Diego to Los Angeles to join a meeting with colleagues in an effort to strengthen the cohesion and bond of fellowship.

The Julita V. Sotejo Medallion of Honor award was established during Luz’ term with emphasis on service to country and humanity (Servitium Patriae et Humanitate). With the selection of extremely qualified awardees, it became an institution that it is today, the highest University of the Philippines nursing alumni award. Indeed, it is a great honor to be with and be amongst our select community of achievers.

The legacy of Luz is by no means limited to the accomplishments of her presidency. Her classmates, colleagues, and friends would certainly recall this U.P. nurse and husband Bernard with camera on hand taking photos of his lovely—wife a perfect picture of love and affection. For those who knew her well, she was a loving wife, caring mother, and a good friend. Her close friend, Blanca S. Paloma, expressed that “Luz was very sensitive to the needs of her friends; she was very compassionate to her patients and was well liked by them.” She will surely be missed.

Unable to thwart her illness, Luz Latus answered the call of the Lord on August 24, 2014. UPNAAI and its members mourn her passing, but also celebrate her life. Indeed, it was her desire to remake the foundation which drove the subsequent leaders to build upon it and to mold today’s UPNAAI. Luz will always be remembered for her leadership, her values, and what she stood for. We will love you always, Luz. May you rest in peace. J

Pascual & his wife Carmen sponsored by the University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Greater Los Angeles (UPAAGLA) led by President Victoria Achacoso-Gancayco and attended by several representatives from the University of the Philippines Nursing Alumni Association International (UPNAAI) led by President Jesusa Santa Barbara Czach. Photo Courtesy of Mely de Leon’61, UPNAAI Adviser and Past President.

The reception started with welcome remarks by emcee Maning Rivera, invocation by Bobby Canseco, followed by former Madrigal singer Annie Nepomuceno leading the crowd by singing the Star Spangled Banner and Lupang Hinirang. In her welcome remarks, UPAAGLA President Vicky Gancayco thanked everyone who came inspite of the long weekend, not only to give a warm welcome to UP’s 20th President Fred Pascual, but to network with co-UP alumni in providing a platform to enable the organization maintain its current mission of scholarship program, where they most recently have awarded four (4) scholarships to students displaced by typhoon Yolanda in UP Visayas.

Consul General Leo Herrera Lim (a UP alumnus himself) attended along with his wife Fides. Ambassador Ed Espiritu, also a UP alumnus attended the event with his wife. In his light hearted speech, ConGen Lim stressed the importance of the UP alumni groups staying “connected” with their alma mater, the University of the Philippines. He was thankful for the presence of former Ambassador Ed Espiritu, who was his mentor when he was assigned in London. He also thanked his lovely wife and said that ”behind every successful man is a woman named Fides.” Former Ambassador Ed Espiritu spoke on the importance of the UP alumni group that we should jointly support the university by putting our resources together to help enable the next generation to pursue the university’s goals and ideals of academic excellence.

Annie Nepomuceno and her group of singers performed a sampling of their upcoming concert called “Serenata Filipina” which they subsequently performed at the Ford Amphitheatre on August 17, 2014. As the producer/director and singer of “Serenata Filipina,” Annie performed some of the OPM songs such as: “Sharing Dreams With Each Other,” “All I Need Is You,” and “Never Say Goodbye.” Another performer, the talented Lara Avengoza, who played “Jasmine” in Disney’s “Mulan” sang her rendition of “You Can Paint With All The Colors Of The Rain” and the delightful Tagalog song of “Ewan Ko Ba Kung Bakit Type Kita, Hindi Ka Naman Guapo.” The Broadway rendition of “Climb Every Mountain, Follow Your Dreams,” was sang by Louise Marie Cornilez. Mon David performed his jazz songs such as Bette Midler’s “You ‘Got to Give A Little” and Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World.”

In a comprehensive video presentation, Dr. Pascual showed the attendees that UP has exponentially grown to eight (8) Institutes of Learning: UP Diliman, Los Baños, Manila, Baguio, Cebu, Visayas, Mindanao and the Open University; 17 campus locations scattered throughout the country; 190 undergraduate programs; 50,000 students (80% undergraduate and 20% graduate); 4,000 full-time faculty (72% with graduate degrees); over 1,000 part-time faculty; over 1,000 research and extension staff over 8,000 administrative personnel and over 260,000 alumni worldwide. According to him, UP’s “Path to Greatness” can only be achieved through a collective recognition that we are ONE UP – “One University, One UP!” President Pascual’s vision for UP includes a “leadership role in the development of a globally competitive Philippines driven by academic excellence.” One UP is “guided by One Chapter, upholding the same tradition of honor and excellence. Moving UP toward greatness is possible through the unified effort of its students, faculty, researchers, administrative staff, and alumni.”

In an effort to meet UP’s globalization recognition, the new UP under his leaderhip now has various campuses with specific institutes of learning specializations such as: UP Manila – learning specializations focus on: Health Sciences: Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, etc.; UP Los Baños – specializes in: Agriculture, Forestry, Veterinary Medicine, etc.; UP Visayas – specializes in Fisheries, Oceanography, Marine Biology, etc.; UP Mindanao – focus on: Architecture and Indigenous Cultural Studies; UP Pampanga – focus on: Sports and Kinetics programs and the Open University, which offers an online program for students unable to find accessible transportation..

He also shared the accessibility of the UPCAT Review to every student regardless of financial status and the new implementation of UP’s socialized tuition system (STS) which will benefit incoming students for the August, 2014 school year. “The STS was established in December, 2013 to speed up the processing of tuition bracket applications adjust income brackets of student applicants, and increase the stipend of poor students in the university.” He also showed the ongoing construction project to expand innovative learning such as the NIH Building project geared toward buiding an Institute of Aging educational program; other buildings are currently being refurbished such as the Abelardo Hall and the UP Theatre in order to enable the student population to maximize its use. According to him, there are other new programs being developed e.g.: the Green UP Program, which emphasizes the construction of green building, and the development of cacao plantation through the Obu-Manuku Tribe, a project of the UP Mindanao’s Forestry Program.

President Pascual shared his plan of “extending the reach of UP” through “Modernizing Pedagogy” which identifies “blended learning by developing massive online courses (MOOCS) – these are online programs which will be available to all.”

UPNAAI congratulates Dr. Alfredo E. Pascaul for his highly impressive achievement as the 20th President of the University of the Philippines. We are so grateful for your excellence in leadership. Padayon UP! J

Alumni In Action

“I look forward to Monday mornings. I am truly hooked to my volunteer work in South Pasadena Holy Family Church Giving Bank. What we do - helping the needy- is important and tangible. Our action is carried out in a welcoming spirit of Christian love for one another, recognizing that all involved are assembled as God’s community.”

Jessie volunteers in the “Giving Bank”– a parish ministry that provides direct relief to persons who face food insecurity by providing food to 250 families and lunches to 125 homeless people weekly. Jessie bags and hands out produce and food items and prepares lunch and snacks. Because she speaks Spanish, she also registers and checks-in clients. The church is located in Los Angeles County’s San Gabriel Valley so she is learning to speak Mandarin.

Jessie describes the fun and camaraderie with the other volunteers of all ages and vocations - from high school kids to retirees. “I learn something all

Dors Maligalig, Class ‘72, former UPNAAI President, & a member of the UPNAAI Advisory Council, organized two gift giving projects in Los Banos, Laguna around Christmastime. Together withformer U.P. Rural High School high school classmates, friends and colleagues of the local "Friends of Los Banos " affiliated with the Los Banos Laguna Association of Southern California where Dors is the president, a feeding program and gift bag distribution were conducted. Over 1000 students and staff of Bayog Elementary School were fed and 300 gift bags were given to the most indigent ones identified by the principal. The bags consisted of school supplies, a white shirt, rubber slippers, toothbrush, and toothpaste. The pupils gave small notes and letters of appreciation that were shared with the US-based donors.

the time, most importantly, to be open and nonjudgmental. I appreciate the client’s sincere gratitude of our work and their words of blessings to us. One particular client gives candies to the volunteers he encounters.”

Last year Jessie and her co-pilgrims spent time to feed clients in Mother Teresa’s House in Calcutta. Jessie is also active in the church’s Filipino ministry. She sings in the Filipino choir and is the Filipino ministry’s publicity liaison. She is currently involved in initiating the Filipino Children Story Time and Crafts Sundays in the parish.

Care packages with basic grocery items and treats for "noche buena" were also distributed to 100 families who were gathered at Dors’ family home. These families were from Barangay San Antonio, an area severely hit in September 2014 by Typhoon Glenda. A vehicle was restored and converted into an ambulance for indigent patients in the barangay needing transport to and from the hospital. Funding for the repair and replacement of parts was obtained from friends in the US, Canada, and locally.

The kindness and generosity of friends and family made it possible for Dors to spearhead and carry out these endeavors. Dors expressed that “gathering volunteers to help with these projects was easy as truly most people have genuine love and concern for others. As retirees, we have time and energy to spread goodwill and continue to serve humanity.”

UP COLLEGE OF NURSING WELL-REPRESENTED DURING THE 25TH INTERNATIONAL NURSING RESEARCH CONGRESS, SIGMA THETA TAU HONOR SOCIETY

BY EVELYN CHAVEZ-DE CASTRO, ’74 RN, MHAIMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT, UPCNAAI

EDMUND J.Y. PAJARILLO, PhD, RN, BC, CPGQ, NEA BC

On August 28, 2014, our 34th JVS Lecture in Nursing and Related Disciplines was held at the Univerity of the Philippines College of Nursing (UPCN) Auditorium. Through the intercession of former Dean Cecile Laurente, we were honored to have one of our very own alumna of Class ’71, former BON member, Ms. Betty F. Merritt, as lecture speaker. She tackled the topic “Transformative Leadership Towards Developing the Filipino Nurse”. Ms Betty Merritt was former Faculty & Lecturer (1973-93) in BSN and MN programs. She is a motivational speaker, resource person and trainor in self enhancement, human relations, group dynamics, assertiveness training, and lifestyle and stress management. She is a Mental Health Psychiatric Nurse Specialist and Independent Nurse Practitioner. Foremost, she was the BON (past) lead/ISA focal person for the “Philippine Nursing Profession Roadmap 2030 Towards Good Governance.”

It was a well-attended event with a subject matter relevant to the current emerging local scenario wherein the Nursing Profession exists today. Board of Nursing members headed by its Chair, Carmencita Abaquin were on hand, as well as other Nurse luminaries from the University of the Philippines College of Nursing namely our former Deans, Dean Teodora Ignacio, Dean Josefina Tuazon, Dean Cecile Laurente, Dean Araceli Balabagno, present Dean Lourdes Marie S. Tejero, Professor Emeritus Letty Kuan, former UPCNAAI Presidents Eufemia Octaviano, Remedios Fernandez, Marita Carag, Lourdes Asprec. Spotted among the audience were Ms Amparo Abulencia, Carmeliita Divinagracia, Loreta C. Galang and many more. Alumni and UPCN students were in attendance.

Below we share photos of the event to give each one a glimpse of what had transpired. Truly, the lecture gave a much needed boost of hope outlining processes towards honing the Nurse to ably face foreseeable challenges.

The officers comprising the New Board of the University of the Philippines College of Nursing Alumni Association Inc. (UPCNAAI) had their oath taking towards the end of the program, with Quennie R. Redulme as its new president. It heralded a renewed promise of selfless dedication to service to our revered organization.

This outgoing term has been one big challenge to us all. It has been a meaningful journey for the organization, with many alumni both here and abroad who have generously shared their resources in many of its undertakings particularly the University of the Philippines Nursing Alumni Association Internanational (UPNAAI, Inc.) through its president Jesusa Santa Barbara Czach, its treasurer Iren Bobis Roldan, all Board members, and others. We salute you

UPNAAI’s 1st Vice President & Chair Education & Research Committee2014-2015

DR. DULA FARA-ON PACQUIAOEdD, RN, CTN-A, TNS

UPNAAI's Coral Jubilee theme, "GLOBAL LEADERSHIP: Breaking Barriers, " is timely and fitting for the choice of Dr. Dula Fara-on Pacquiao as the 2014 recipient of the Julita V. Sotejo Medallion of Honor Award. She exemplified global leadership and broke barriers because of her transcultural nursing expertise and her efforts to increase awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS. She advocated training and mentoring of nurses to become culturally competent. She authored, coauthored, co-edited, lectured, keynoted, and explored every facet of transcultural nursing. She co-edited "Core Curriculum in Transcultural Nursing and Health Care" which became the basis for the Certification in Transcultural Nursing, a nursing specialty that was institutionalized through her leadership.

Dr. Pacquiao continues her push towards the integration of cultural competencies in baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral programs for nursing. In 2007, she was the educational consultant for the Twinning Project between the Ministry of Health, Botswana (one of the sub-Saharan Africa countries devastated by HIV),

and the Francois Xavier-Bagnoud Center. The project was jointly funded by the CDC, Botswana, and the USA. Dr. Pacquaio’s expertise in transcultural nursing and her background in anthropology were instrumental in helping health care providers meet the challenges of social stigma, cultural beliefs, and inequality that create barriers to preventing and caring of HlV-affected individuals. In recognition of her efforts, The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey gave Dr. Dula Pacquiao its Humanitarian Award.

Dr. Pacquaio’s talent and leadership potential manifested early in her life. She served as nursing Class’68 President, University of the Philippines College of Nursing (UPCN) College Councilor representative to the UP Student Council, and President of the UP Womens Club. Despite these extracurricular activities, she graduated Class Valedictorian with her BSN degree. She moved to the U.S. and pursued her Masters in Nursing degree at Teachers College, Columbia University and obtained her Doctorate in Education from Rutgers University. She exemplifies Dean Julita V. Sotejo’s words: "There is something better than just being good--excel, excel, excel.” Dr. Pacquiao always excels in whatever she does (as a student, nurse, researcher, writer, lecturer, preceptor, and other roles) as evidenced by numerous recognitions and citations in her profession. She was inducted to three honor societies namely, Phi Kappa Phi, Theta Tau, and Kappa Delta Pi. She was the first Filipino to be appointed to the New Jersey State Board of Nursing and was the Chairman of the Education Committee.

For her pioneering work, transcultural nursing advocacy, and service to her profession, country, and humanity, the UPNAAI Board of Directors unanimously voted in favor of Dr. Dula Fara-on Pacquiao as the 20I4 Julita V. Sotejo Medallion of Honor awardee. Our heartwarming congratulations!

Marlon Garzo Saria, BSN’98 and former 1st Vice President and Chair of the Education Committee for UPNAAI and Nurse Researcher at the Moores Cancer Center, UC San Diego, was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing on October 18, 2014. The Academy serves the public and the nursing profession by advancing health policy and practice through the generation, synthesis, and dissemination of nursing knowledge. The Academy's more than

2,100 members- known as fellows- are nursing's most accomplished leaders in education, management, practice, and research.

In his nomination, Dr. Francisco Conde of Queen's University in Hawaii wrote: "Marlon has made significant contributions in the field of oncology nursing, especially in the areas of 1) delivering safe and competent nursing care of patients with cancer at the bedside and 2) neuro-oncology. As a clinical nurse specialist, he promoted and disseminated the importance of safe handling of hazardous drugs and inter-departmental collaboration to improve outcomes in bone marrow transplant patients through conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications. His 2007 Clinical Journal of Nursing article on hematopoietic stem cell transplant for critical care nurses is cited by many cancer programs, such as Johns Hopkins Medical Center. As a novice nurse researcher, his dissertation study focuses on neuro-oncology family caregiver burden. His research will identify and address the needs of caregivers of patients with brain metastases who not only acquire new care demands, in addition to increasing intensity of existing demands, but also deal with both physical and cognitive deterioration of these patients."

On October 16, preceding the induction ceremony, Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to the United States of America, hosted a reception in honor of the Filipino-American Fellows of the Academy and expressed gratitude to the American Nursing Community for their support of the Typhoon Haiyan relief and recovery efforts. In attendance were Officers and Board Members of several professional nursing associations, Deans and Professors of Nursing who were there to support their Filipino-American colleagues.

WINTER 2014 - 2015 19

UPNAAI’S 2014 U.S. EAST COAST AND CANADA POST REUNION TOUR

After our 2014 UPNAAI Convention in New York City, 47 participants including alumni members from Class’66, Class’67, Class’68, Class’75, and Class’79 embarked on a sevem-day voyage on August 3. Our trip covered a number of acclaimed places such as Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Niagara Falls, and Canada. We reached Philadelphia at lunchtime so we eagerly sought out joints that served the famous "Philly" steak sandwich. After a few photo shoots outside and around Independence Hall, with the tour guide's (Patrick) persistence, the group reluctantly boarded and continued its journey towards Maryland where we finally turned in for the night.

The following day witnessed a beautiful bus ride to Washington, DC where our group marveled at the National Air & Space Museum's virtual journal of mankind's air travel from the first airplane to the current advances of space travel. We proceeded to the Vietnam and Korean War Veterans Memorial where we saw architectural tributes to the men and women who died in the service to our country. We certainly did not miss visiting the iconic Lincoln Memorial that faces the famous Washington Monument. The plan to view the grounds where the White House is located was thwarted by a group of uniformed government authorities who ordered everybody to turn around and go back where we all came from. The group then proceeded to Corning, NY, and visited the Corning Museum where various exhibits of glass art astounded everyone.

Nearing night time, we finally reached Niagara Falls, NY. We briefly stopped at the Rainbow Bridge that connects the two Niagara towns (NY & Canada) and glimpsed at the famous Niagara Falls from the US side. The group hung around long enough to wait for the colored lights that illuminated the cascading waters and we had another photo op. Bone weary after a long day of travel, we checked in late at our designated lodging, the last stop at the US side of the border, anticipating the following day's onward journey to Canada.

On Aug. 5, our 3rd day of travel, the Canadian rain showers greeted us as we stepped out of the bus. We proceeded to the "Maid of the Mist" ride to see Niagara Falls up close after which the group headed for lunch at the revolving restaurant of the Skylon Tower where we marveled at the 360 degree view of the Niagara Falls. What a sight it was! We headed to the Niagara Falls IMAX to watch a movie depicting the historical and mythical background of the falls. After the movie, we went sightseeing around the Toronto business district that afforded a glimpse of the CN Toronto Tower and the Richardson Romanesque architectural structure of the Ontario Legislative Building that currently functions as the parliamentary building of the province of Ontario. We made a short stop in downtown Toronto to see both the old and the new City Hall that houses the city's municipal government, and proceeded to the University of Toronto campus for further sightseeing. Next stop was Chinatown where we had a traditional Chinese style family dinner.

Day 4 (Aug. 6) was a special day for Class '68 to meet classmates residing in Canada, Chicago, and Michigan who were unable to attend the NY reunion. Our Canadian counterpart, fondly dubbed as the "Toronto Team," hosted a picnic at Mississauga, Ontario (an area close to Toronto) and a dinner-dance that featured music popular during the "bell-bottoms" and "hippie" eras of the 60's and 70's. It was indeed a night to remember!

We went to Ottawa and Montreal the next day. We drove along the St. Lawrence River and arrived at Brockville where we boarded a boat for a ride along the famous 1000 Islands. The boat ride provided us with sights of the different summer homes built by the wealthy and middle-class families during the late 19th and early 20th century. A few homes were built with stones and were considered as "castles" and became international landmarks. We had a glimpse of a famous existing example, the Boldt Castle on Heart Island. Today, the region boasts a historically important collection of homes that endured even the war of 1812 between the British Empire and the United States. After immersion on the interesting historical

background of the area, the group proceeded to downtown Ottawa to the Parliament Hill or The Hill, home of the Parliament of Canada.

On Aug. 8th, day 6 of our journey, we reached Quebec and entered the lower entrance of the old city (Old Quebec) where the city's port is located. A local guide led the group to a section of Upper Town that allowed a partial view of the famous Chateau Frontenac, a 650-room castle-like hotel that hosted several famous foreign dignitaries such as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, Sir Winston Churchill, President Charles de Gaulle, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt. For those of us who are Roman Catholics, we counted this day as a blessed one for having the opportunity to cross the "Holy Door" of the Basilica of Notre Dame that only opens once every 25 years or when there is a jubilee celebration as permitted by the Pope. We then proceeded to Lower Town descending the famous "Breakneck Stairs" that took us down to the Rue de Petit Champlain. This street is said to be the oldest shopping center in North America, dating back to the founding of the city in 1608. Shops, art galleries, restaurants, and boutiques lined both sides of the street offering various souvenirs and eye-catching merchandise. On the wall of a structure named Soumande House is a painting that depicted the story of Quebec's architecture, its fortified walls, its seasonal colors, and the 16 significant individuals credited to the establishment of the city. We made our way back to cross the Canadian-U.S. border through Vermont and arrived at Lawrence, Massachusetts in time to grab a late dinner before turning in for the night.

Our tour ended on Aug. 9, and traveled to Boston where we briefly stopped at the Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campuses. Lunch time for us was a Lobster meal (Chinese style), after which we finally said our "goodbyes" and more promises to see each other again perhaps, at the 2015 reunion in California.

The tour not only allowed us the pleasure of each other's company and memories to share but earned four continuing education credits and additional knowledge on cultural issues affecting nursing practice, updates on diabetes, and the science of nursing informatics presented by Dr. Edmund Pajarillo’79 and Delia Reyes’68, FNP. UPNAAI thanks Natalia Matitu-Mercado’68 for organizing this memorable tour of the East Coast & Canada.

UPNAA-Texas Chapter: A Short HistoryBy Virginia Lopez-Chan, RN, FNP

VP, UPNAA-TX Chapter

The Texas chapter of University of the Philippines Nursing Alumni Association Internatinal (UPNAAI, Inc.) was founded by a group of alumni of the University of the Philippines College of Nursing and School of Nursing who are currently residing in Texas.

Susan (Palis) Vicencio- Garaygay was the moving spirit as she untiringly called on a few nursing alumni at a series of lunch meetings to discuss the formation of a local chapter of UPNAAI. The first meeting was more of a “Getting To Know You” affair that provided the opportunity to meetnot only new faces but also get reconnected with familiar ones. There were those who made the one and a half to three hours drive to Houston where the meetings were mostly held, thus allowing good representation from various classes of graduates from the College and School of Nursing.

Thanks to the group's endless enthusiasm and tireless work on recruiting friends, classmates, and co-workers, the requirement of getting 20 members to establish a new chapter was met with most of the new recruits signing up as life members of UPNAAI. Officers of the chapter are: Susan (Palis) Vicencio-Garaygay, President; Virgina (Lopez) Chan, Vice-President; Virginia (Barilla) Bona, Secretary; Nikki (Sta. Teresa) Stiffin, Treasurer; Debbie (Yambao) Butuyan, Auditor; Board Members included Mara (Bernarte) Milla, and Dolly (Sanares) Carreon.

The Texas chapter was presented and formally recognized as UPNAA-TX during the annual UPNAAI Convention held in New York in August 2014. The UPNAA-TX attendees included the chapter's current president, Susan Vicencio-Garaygay , Nikki Stiffin, (Treasurer), Debbe Butuyan (Auditor,) and chapter members, Mary Alba Fiecas, Teri Pulanco, Brian Butuyan, Maria Rico Combong, and Dr. Marilyn Patillo. Our 2014 chapter activities included a pot-luck picnic in July at a park in the NASA-Clear Lake area (a suburb of Houston) and participation at a local event “Fiesta Mo sa Texas” held on September in southwest Houston where the chapter set up a First Aid Booth.

The picnic was all fun with lively group games headed by Mara Milla and the partaking of the various excellent food brought by everyone. At the September “Fiesta Mo sa Texas” event, the group that included Virgie Chan, Virgie Bona, Eula Altamirano, Agnes Estraza (who drove from Lufkin withher mother), Mara and Tony Milla, Debbie Butuyan and others persevered and endured the Houston heat and humidity to successfully achieve the goal of presenting the newly formed UPNAA-TX to the Houston community for the first time.

At the recent October, 2014 chapter meeting, members in attendance discussed and unanimously agreed to hold a Christmas Party as the chapter's holiday celebration and invite other alumni to the event. Invitations were sent out, and, again, the group is hard at work engaging other alumni non-members to come to this celebratory event that promises a great opportunity to enjoy the holidays with old friends and make new ones!
