TS Signs Pact with Chhattisgarh to Buy 1,000 MW Power
HYDERABAD:A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) was signed between the power distribution companies of Telangana and Chhattisgarh on Tuesday for purchasing
1,000 MW power. This is the best bet by the Telangana government, as the state is to get power at a very reasonable price of Rs 4.90 per unit from Chhattisgarh.
This includes wheeling and transmission costs. The actual cost of the power per unit would be around Rs 4 and the wheeling and transmission charges will be around 90
paise to Re 1.The 1,000 MW power will start flowing into the state from September next year. Meanwhile, the Chhattisgarh Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC) has to
approve the tariff. The Chhattisgarh ERC is expected to approve the tariff in next February. The power
will flow into the state, in all probability, from September,” official sources told Express.
At a time the government is planning to make the state powercut-free, the timing of signing of PPA was an added advantage to the state both in terms of availability of
power and being economical.According to official sources, the 1,000 MW power would be transmitted through any
one of the two transmission lines which are under construction.Work is in progress on transmission line from Angur in Odisha to Palasa in
Srikakulam district in AP. Another line from Wardha in Maharashtra to Dichpally to Nizamabad to Maheswaram in Hyderabad is also in progress. These two lines would
be completed by September next.
“We can use any one of the two lines,” the official said. The Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) is laying these two lines which are 765 kv lines
and transmit 4,350 MW each. The energy secretaries of both the states signed an MoU for purchase of 1,000 MW in November 2014 in Chhattisgarh in the presence of Chandrasekhar Rao
and Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh. The PPA was signed in the presence of chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on
Tuesday at his camp office by Chhattisgarh distribution company MD Ankit Anand and Telangana State Central Power Distribution Company Ltd MD G
Raghuma Reddy. The PPA will be in force for 12 years. Energy minister G Jagadish Reddy,
Secretary (Energy) Arvind Kumar, Chhattisgarh Genco MD SB Aggarwal were also present at the signing of PPA on Tuesday.
Power Grid commissions first power transmission express highway
ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has energized the first pole of the North-East Agra 800 kilovolts (kV) Ultra-high voltage direct current
(UHVDC) transmission link, which will supply clean hydropower from northeastern India to a substation in Agra, home of the Taj Mahal, and from there, feed it across
north India. The project is being executed by ABB together with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), a leading government-owned power company, on a turnkey basis, including design, system engineering, supply, installation and commissioning for Power Grid
Corporation of India Ltd (POWERGRID), India’s central transmission utility.
This completes phase one of the project, which enables transfer of up to 1,500 megawatts (MW) of electricity along this link, across a distance of 1,728
kilometers. When fully commissioned in 2016, the link will become the world’s first multi-terminal UHVDC connection, capable of transmitting enough electricity
to serve around 90 million people, based on average national consumption. The North-East Agra link will help address the shortage of power in north India by transporting hydropower generated in the Himalayas in the country’s north
east. This region has abundant untapped renewable resources, but load centers are thousands of kilometers away and power must pass through a 22-kilometer
wide corridor of land bordered by Nepal and Bangladesh on either side.

capacity. This is one of the major investments from a Chinese company in Andhra Pradesh following the visit of Chief Minister and the delegation from the Government of Andhra Pradesh in April, according to an official release here on
Thursday. The Chinese company will invest in a facility for manufacturing solar cells and
modules with the capacity of 500 MW at Sri City. The facility is expected to provide employment to 1,000 people.
Enel Green Power Enters Indian Market by Acquiring A Majority Stake in BLP
Energy
Enel Green Power (“EGP”) has today announced the acquisition of a majority stake in BLP Energy (“BLP”), the utility scale wind and solar subsidiary of Bharat Light & Power Pvt Ltd (“BLP Group”) for a total consideration of approx. 30 million euros.
With this transaction EGP enters the Indian renewables market, marking the Group’s first move into the Asia-Pacific region thus reaching more than 10 GW of net installed
capacity globally. EGP brings to the Indian market the latest renewable technology and global best practices in engineering design and project development, based on
its presence in now 17 countries.BLP is one of the leading renewable energy companies in India which owns
operating wind plants in the States of Gujarat and Maharashtra that have a total capacity of 172 MW with a total annual production of about 340 GWh. It also has a
portfolio of approximately 600 MW of wind projects in different stages of development. BLP Group is based in New Delhi and Bangalore, and has a team of professionals with background in renewable energy, manufacturing, consulting and financial services with extensive experience in technical, development, operation &
maintenance and financing activities.
“This acquisition opens the doors for Enel Green Power to the huge potential of the Indian market and is the gateway to further expansion across Asia,” said
EGP CEO Francesco Venturini. “We intend to contribute to the Indian government objective of increasing the share of renewables in the country’s
energy portfolio. EGP is also interested in participating through BLP Energy in the country’s upcoming public solar tenders at both national and state level.”The acquisition of a majority stake in an Indian Independent Power Producer
(“IPP”) with a portfolio of wind assets already in operation and a geographically diversified pipeline of solar and wind projects, fits the Group’s strategy and offers
strong development prospects combined with an established market position.
Bain, KKR vie for 30% stake in Lanco’s power projects
Lanco Infratech is engaged in talks with private equity firms Bain Capital and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR) to sell stake in its power business. Lanco has been trying to find a buyer for its power business since the beginning of the year. It had talked about raising around $750 million (Rs 3,892 crore) for a minority stake. This
time, the company is known to have put a higher stake on the block — around 30 per cent in some of its generation projects.
“It is quite possible that a structured deal would happen,” said an investment banker aware of the deal. Structured deals are ones where the investor gets minimum assured returns from a deal. These returns are assured by the promoters of the company. An emailed query sent to the private equity firms elicited no response, while Lanco said it was currently in discussions with investors to raise up to $750
million in private equity. “This will be done at the power holding company level. We have mandated Macquarie to facilitate a deal,” it said in an emailed response.
Lanco also said it was planning to monetise non-core assets to bring some additional liquidity into operations. “We are also looking to monetise our wind portfolio and our roads business where our portfolio consists of three highway projects. Aside from this, we are looking for a strategic partner in our solar vertical,” the company said.
Lanco Infratech had earlier indicated it planned to use the funds secured from a stake sale as equity for its new projects. “Lanco currently has around 8,800 Mw
of new generation capacity under various stages of execution. Over half of this is already under construction and the balance has secured off-take agreements or fuel linkages, and is likely to attain financial closure over the next 12 months,”
said a report by Edelweiss Securities, in its investment themes.Lanco has an installed capacity of 4,480 Mw across coal, natural gas and hydel capacity, making it one of the largest private sector power manufacturers. Lanco
Infratech has interests across the infrastructure sector, which include roads, engineering, procurement and construction, property development and natural
resources like coal mines — both in India and abroad. The power sector, however, contributes to 51 per cent of its revenues.
The company’s power business has come under pressure after fuel availability affected both its coal and natural gas-based projects. State electricity boards
also owe the company dues which total around Rs 2,800 crore, from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
Power demand rises by 8% in April-August 2015-16
The demand for power in Andhra Pradesh has increased by eight per cent during April-August period of the current financial year, according to an official report.
The report, submitted by Department of Energy to the government at the two-day District Collectors conference here yesterday, said power demand between April and August has escalated to 21,371 million units against 19,839 million units during the
same period a year ago.The state maintained uninterrupted power supply to domestic, commercial and
industrial sectors through regularly monitoring the load even as hydel power generation units were closed due to lack of water supply in reservoirs.
To encourage energy saving, government has distributed LED bulbs for all households in district of Anatapur, Guntur, West Godavari and Srikakulam, the report
said, adding, the government has decided to extend the scheme in the remaining nine districts of AP.
