UPDATE ‘E’ INFORMATION and NEWS for the Lions of District 105E July 2016 UPDATE ‘E’ is Edited and Produced by: Lion Gordon Davison - [email protected] Tel: 01724 762036 or 07711 153080 Hello Everyone I am really looking forward to the next 12 months and to serving as your District Governor. Rashpal is also very excited about the next year, looking for support in her chosen charity and also committed to supporting me through the year ahead. Reaching our Centenary Year we must remind our selves of our rich tradition of service, starting with the founding of our organisation in Chicago, by Melvin Jones in 1917. We have blossomed over the 100 years since with an International presence in over 200 countries and are now a family of some 1.4 million Lions. We have come a long way, however, we still have some way to go. I was first drawn to the organisation as the motto ‘We Serve’ resonated with the adherence of selfless service from my own Sikh faith. Now, as your District Governor, I look to set an example of service and action. I ask for all my fellow Lions to follow suit so we may make a difference to our National and International community. Keep this in mind, my theme for the coming year is... TOGETHER LIONS MAKE A DIFFERENCE To promote my theme and my vision we need to further raise the Lions profile in the media... By exploiting the massive involvement of Lions in major disaster areas of the world, By exploiting the selfless giving of Lions to support major projects to improve communities (Sight First Program, Water wells etc). By doing more service projects and sharing the experiences through the media By showing how “Together Lions Make A Difference” to our communities By sharing the history and the immense work of Lionism through the social media and television We are all part of the largest Service Organisation in the World. An organisation that has a great history and reputation and was formed some 100 years ago. Our Centenary will be in 2017 and preparations have commenced globally to celebrate it and we will celebrate it here in UK as well. But we must keep in mind that in the 21st Century the society is changing in every way socially, culturally and technologically. We in Lions have to respond and ask ourselves what do we need to do? We have to recruit more members and run projects that are relevant and to help people who need our support most. We do need to be thinking of new ideas and we need to embrace the changes in the society. But there is still so much more to do! As the District Governor, I seek your support to increase our manpower, to encourage more ladies and youngsters to join us and spread our message. Finally, I do hope you will be able to come along to Nottingham on Sunday 17th July 2016 to the DG Homecoming Event. It will be great to see you. Hello EveryoneI am really looking forward to the next 12 months and to servingas your District Governor. Rashpal is also very excited about thenext year, looking for support in her chosen charity and alsocommitted to supporting me through the year ahead.Reaching our Centenary Year we must remind our selves of ourrich tradition of service, starting with the founding of ourorganisation in Chicago, by Melvin Jones in 1917. I ask for all my fellow Lions tofollow suit so we may make a difference to our National andInternational community.Keep this in mind, my theme for the coming year is...

TOGETHER LIONS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

To promote my theme and my vision we need to further raise the Lions profile in the media...

By exploiting the massive involvement of Lions in major disaster areas of the world, By exploiting the selfless giving of Lions to support major projects to improve communities(Sight First Program, Water wells etc).

By doing more service projects and sharing the experiences through the media By showing how “Together Lions Make A Difference” to our communities By sharing the history and the immense work of Lionism through the social media and television

We are all part of the largest Service Organisation in the World. An organisation that has a great history andreputation and was formed some 100 years ago. Our Centenary will be in 2017 and preparations have commencedglobally to celebrate it and we will celebrate it here in UK as well. But we must keep in mind that in the 21st Century the society is changing in every way socially, culturally andtechnologically. UPDATE E: June 2016 - Page 2

Hello to everyoneI am delighted to be able to support Balvinder during his year as yourDistrct Governor. I am also very pleased that I have been given theopportunity to launch this special appeal for something which is soclose to my heart. Some 25 years ago my brother, who was the youngest of the brothers butolder than me, was diagnosed with cancer. As life went on the conditionstarted to deteriorate but he was very strong and was able to bear theseriousness of the condition. The whole family was very supportive andtried their best to seek medical help from wherever it was possible. He survived for some 16 years but the condition became worse and he passed to higher service. Fromthen on I have been determined to support the research in cancer so as to help people with a similarcondition.I know that some Lions clubs in 105E already support this organisation and I hope that you will allsupport me in the cause during the coming year.THANK YOU all for considering how you will be able to help me. I will of course try to keep you all wellinformed with our progress through this column in Update E.

Please consider how your Club can support Rashpalduring the next 12 Months with her worthy Appeal

an additional note...

...Golf Days are quite fashionable too and TheSleaford & District Lioness Club’s 2016 Charity GolfDay was yet again an excellent event. 29 teamsof four took part, all of them enjoying lots of goodfood, competitive golf and raising a magnificentsum in excess of £3,000 for the British HeartFoundation and other local charities.HUGE thanks go to all who took part and to thelocal Businesses and individuals who sponsoredholes and provided such generous raffle prizes. The winning team (with 95 points) were PeteMiller, Jeff Kemp, Trevor Horwood and Kevin Hardyfrom Lincoln Torksey Golf Club.Pictured right... A CHANCE meeting whilst dog walking hashelped a disabled Scunthorpe archer towardsher ambition to compete as part of Team GBat the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020.That meeting led to the Scunthorpe LionsClub teaming up with local Freemasons andRotarians to meet the £2,700 cost of aspecialist wheelchair that Victoria Rumaryneeds to compete at the highest level in hersport.Victoria, 27, received the chair in time to useit in competition for the first time in the BritishWheelchair Championships at StokeMandeville.Freemason (and Past President of ScunthorpeLions) Terry Walton met Victoria whilst bothwere out dog-walking. He shared her storywith the Freemasons and also the Lions andRotarians. .. all of whom wanted to contribute.Victoria has been confined to a wheelchair forseveral years. She suffers from hemiplegia, acondition causing weakness down her left side, and arthritis caused by an infection followinga series of operations involving removal ofpart of her brain and her skull to controlepileptic seizures.

Before being disabled Victoria competed in archery at national level, but felt she had to set that aside. She said: ‘At first I did wheelchair basketball, during this time I realised I could do things. I really wantedto shoot again, but had doubts. My mum took me to see my old coach, it was amazing to see him... heasked me what part of the bow I pulled with my feet. His belief in me strong, he convinced me that Icould still shoot. In my very first coaching sessions I was so happy, shooting a training bow like I’d neverleft, except I was in a wheelchair. But he taught me that that was no hurdle to my archery.’

Pictured above Victoria Rumary demonstrates to Lions Bob Hall, JohnRawlinson, Gordon Davison and Club President Roy Mee how her newchair will help to improve her competitive skills.

Victoria has been training with Team GB, and represented thecountry in Dubai, when she came fifth in her competition. Shehad been considered for the Rio Paralympics, but wasn’t namedas one of the final four in spite of shooting a perfect scoreduring the selection event. ‘Being new to the GB squad, one ofmy main aims now is to compete in the Tokyo 2020Paralympics,’ she added. Her normal day chair wasn’t ideal forarchery. She had to use planks to sit on so she was liftedenough to prevent the bow touching the chair, which is notallowed. ‘The new chair has been built to fit me And I’m reallylooking forward to using it in competition,’ she said. The specialist wheelchair is not Victoria’s only cost associatedwith competing at the highest level. Her bow is valued at£2,000, there are ongoing costs associated with maintenanceof equipment, travel and accommodation to attend events soobviously Lions were delighted to provide some support. LionPresident Roy Mee commented on Victoria’s bravery andexpertise. He said, ‘It’s amazing to learn how Victoria hasfought to overcome some significant problems. But to takeup archery again and achieve such high standards issomething that we as Lions could not leave unrecognised...We were delighted to provide help and support for such aremarkable young lady’.Lion President Roy Mee gets a few tips on what’s

needed to become a top class archer STOP PRESS - see page 7

Lion Stan Thompson of Sleaford Lions Club is a member a local Church Coffee Club. The group wasinvited to hold a meeting in the garden of Chestnut Street School in Ruskington (Sleaford) so that pupilscould tell the members about their School Garden Club. When Lion Stan told Sleaford Lions of the visit and reported that the school needed a greenhouse Clubmembers quickly saw this as another scheme which fitted nicely into their commitment to ECO Projects. The Club quickly agreed to purchase a Greenhouse which is a generous size (for the vegetables beinggrown) and is mostly plastic to avoid accidents. Some vegetables have been sold to fund the purchaseof further seeds and future gardening projects. Our pictures above shows the magnificent Greenhouse and some of the gardening pupils withLions Mick Laws (left), Stan Thompson and Paul Whitworth.

Paraplegic Archer Victoria Rumary

STOP PRESS... Just as Update E was about to Go to Press the followinginformation arrived which is, perhaps, well worth a further brief mention.Further to our page 4 news story about British Paraplegic Archer Victoria Rumary...Just a few days after being presented with her new specially built wheelchairVictoria attended the British Wheelchair Archery Association Nationalchampionships. This proved extremely successful as she won and was awardedthe Gold Medal. In her triumph Victoria told Scunthorpe Lions... ‘I'm so pleased, my wheelchairwas a big hit with other archers and the coaches were impressed too. It certainlymade a difference to my performance and I am so pleased and grateful thatyou’ve helped me in this way... Thank you again’
