On the way home Ann and I stopped over in Washington DC and we found a bronze plaque of the Lions founder, Melvin Jones, inlaid into the pavement amazingly right across from the White House. This made me reflect on the Lions Centennial, now less than two years away. Is your club thinking of projects in celebration of 100 years of Lions? Certainly at International Convention many Districts were coming up with some brilliant ideas. Come on 105E we’re the best, let’s record those brilliant projects and activities on My LCI and show the World what we get up to! My first Club Visit as District Governor was to my own Club... Lincoln. I am enormously proud of my Club and wanted to say thank you for all their support. How did they respond? By organising the first District Cabinet Meeting and the Hawaiian themed DGs Homecoming. At the Cabinet meeting, and at a meeting with the Zone Chairs three days before, we concentrated on coordinating action on the District Plan. With everyone in the District pulling in the same direction I hope and believe we will start to see real momentum very quickly. Thank you to everyone who came along to the DG’s Homecoming too, including four generations of my family, it was a splendid afternoon (see pictures - page 3). In this first month as DG I've really enjoyed following the activities of many clubs on Facebook from Grimsby Cleethorpes "Monte Carlo or Bust", Bourne Lions "Family Fun Day" Spalding Lions " Membership Promotion Day" Market Rasen Lions " Young Gardeners Trophy presentation" and Louth Lions cleaning up the River Ludd, to name but a few. If your club doesn't yet have a Facebook page please consider setting one up and share all your great work! I must go now, three days at the Council of Governors taking forward National Lions matters on your behalf is the next challenge! Hello Everyone in District 105E, The responsibilities of being District Governor are many and in the last month I think that Ann and I have covered them all! Firstly Ann and I were privileged to represent District 105E at the International Convention in Hawaii, where our new International President, Dr Jitsuhiro Yamada from Japan was sworn in. He introduced his 2015/16 International Theme . are the central elements of the theme.

Hello Everyone in District 105E,The responsibilities of being District Governor aremany and in the last month I think that Ann and I havecovered them all!Firstly Ann and I were privileged to represent District105E at the International Convention in Hawaii, whereour new International President, Dr Jitsuhiro Yamadafrom Japan was sworn in. 1) The temperature in Hawaii varies between 82 and 88F. It’s also very humid. The good side of this was my efforts to send the DG elect out in a clean shirt each day worked well as the washing dried very quickly.

2) 18,000 Lions at Convention so a lot of crowds in the convention hall. However, Hawaii works on the ‘Ahola Spirit’ so there was no rush, no pushing.3) My favourite speaker was Tim Shriver of Special Olympics. He’s a brilliant speaker with a very powerful message – a spellbinding session about the treatment and reactions to those with intellectual disabilities.4) We had great fun learning new words, trying the local drinks, making new friends and trying new foods.5) Paul and I were lucky having two members of our 105E in Hawaii (PDG Michael and Lion Pat Phillips). They were there when we had questions, supported and guided us when necessary. They even took the Chain of Office to Hawaii to hand to Paul when he was sworn in!6) After taking his oath for the International President Yamada I had to remove the ‘Elect’ ribbon from Paul’s name badge. After two years of training he’d become DG.7) We met up with Phoenix Lions on our way out to Hawaii – and met their incoming Governor Paul and his wife Ellen. We met up with them again in Hawaii. Ellen lived in Honolulu as a child and shared her memories with me. We also hosted Lions from Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia and Bulgaria at the British Isles and Ireland Reception. It was a very enjoyable evening learning more about Lions Clubs in their countries.8) I’m always inspired by projects in places like Africa and India. As Lions we are achieving so much with regard to health – sight, measles etc.

MS can affect anyone. It’s debilitating, frightening, restricting and extremelypainful. My mum died of MS just over 13 years ago so she can’t tell me howshe felt when she was diagnosed or how she coped. However, a memberof Lincoln and District MS Branch has written to me. She says...

I appreciate this lady (who battles with MS day in, day out) allowing me to share her story with you all.

ALOHA!!! and WELCOME HOME...

An amazing start to the DG journey...From innauguration in Hawaii as DG and theappropriate celebrations... to receiving thechain of office from PDG Lion Alan Hall...Then on to a wonderful Home Coming partyincluding arrival by boat across Lincoln’sBrayford Pool and greetings from Grandchildrenand fellow Lions... a truly wonderful experienceand a taster for a great year ahead.

Record breaking crowds attended theLincolnshire Show this year where Lions ofZones A and B joined forces to support aLions exhibit over the 2 day event. Thanks must go to the team of Lions who setup and took down the displays and to thosewho manned the exhibit. It was certainly anall round resounding success.New roller banners and leaflet stands wereso much easier to put up, take down andtransport but maintained a look.

chool children, toddlers, mums and dads, grandmas and granddads, and even professionalpeople all enjoyed having a cuddle with our two Lions.240 people entered the Free Prize Draw... a lady fromGrimsby winning the Mini Cruise (courtesy of P&O).90 people indicated an interest in learning more aboutLions and Community Brochures are being sent tothese people prior to contact being made via theDistrict Global Membership Team.

have recentlypresented their first Young Leader inService Award to Caitlin MacBeath, aGuide with 1st. Broughton Guides.Caitlin was chosen to take part in a Girl GuidingInternational Community Experience and attended aselection weekend earlier in the year, where shewas involved in cleaning out old water troughs, gardening, painting and cleaning toilets at theGuiding house. She then attended a team buildingweekend where she again completed communitywork, including clearing a garden and learning aboutbuying food for a pound. Her trip also involved travelling to Ireland where shedid leaf clearing at the Guide house. At a wildlifecentre she filled seed bags for sale and cleanedwindows and worked for the Trussell Trust Food Banksorting and stacking shelves. To enable her to go on the trip she had to raise funds and as many people do, she wrote to Brigg DistrictLions for support. The Club donated some funds and made her aware of the Young Leaders in ServiceAward, which she signed up for. Caitlin used her trip to Ireland to account for some of her service hoursas well as the earlier weekends. In addition she helped out at Brownies on a weekly basis as well ashelping Santa at the Lions Christmas Market. She also worked at Brigg Foodbank and helped out atThe Forge (a Charity in Scunthorpe caring for the homeless). Having completed over 100 hours ofcommunity work Caitlin received her award from Brigg Youth Officer Lion Mike Hare ( ).

have adopted this great andrelatively inexpensive way to promote their Club. On one side of the beer mat is a Lions Logo with some of the Club’s contact information. On the reverse side you can read an outline of some of the regular events staged by the Club.

A member of Bourne Lions told that the Beer Mat idea was something the Club decided to do a few years ago. The mats were relatively cheap to produce and the Club distributed them to local pubs and Clubs with the idea of keeping Bourne Lions in the forefront of people’s minds...

. Following its establishment in 1917 it was less than three years before Lions becamean INTERNATIONAL organisation. The first Club formed outside of the USA was in Canada. Withinten years membership had grown to 60,000 and the number of Clubs rose to 1,200 with operationsthen extending to China, Mexico and Cuba. It was 1948 when Lions came to Europe with Sweden andSwitzwerland being added to the list of countries boasting Lions Clubs. In 1949 the first English Clubwas chartered in London and during the 1950’s there was huge further expansion, not just in the UKbut throughout the rest of Europe as well as Africa and Asia. Now, in the 21st Century, our 46,000 Clubs and over 1.4 million members make us the

Planning ahead - so we are ready to look back!

Are you starting to plan your big celebration for 2017? Why not talk to other Clubs in your Zone –!

How about planting 100 or 1,000 bulbs in autumn 2015? They will multiply during 2016 and you maywell achieve 100,000 flowers in 2017.What about building a sensory garden in a place where disabled children or adults go?What about a big garden party?Whatever you decide to do...Get the press involved and place a plaque with your creation so that everyone knows who created it.

How about approaching local primary schools about getting involved in the project? All you need is:

Finally a home for the planter is needed... This might be a residential home where the children couldmake the presentation with the press taking lots of photographs...This will result in the achievement of 3 centenary challenges –Involving YOUTH, caring for the ENVIRONMENT, and HELPING THE ELDERLY.No matter what projects you adopt please remember to take a photographs, write a story and getthem to the District Newsletter Editor for inclusion in . No fund raising, just a chance to tell people about Lions and hopefully increase interest.Lion Chris Huscroft was on hand to greet the Mayor of Oadby & Wigston, Councillor Latif Darr. Finally - The best part of fund raising is making donations on local charities to help their work. At Oadby& Wigston’s Presentation Night 15 local charities received help thanks (as all Lions know) to amazinggenerosity of those who support us. Talk about atsometime or another we’ve all been asked to domake some personal sacrifices for Lions... and thisseems to be just one of those times:

held their Family FunDay recently. The collection of various items priorto the event was a necessity. This meant that theClub’s newest member, Lion Jenny Orford, wasasked if she would accompany fellow Lion JaneMcKee as she went to collect a Roll-a-Ball game from Grantham. Members of StamfordLions know that Lion Jane has a car like a tardis and can usually get anything in the back with room for a passenger and driver in the front. , on this occasion there was perhaps a little too much optimism in the tardis effect and the result was a pretty uncomfortable ride for Lion Jenny.

We hope your future experiences in our fantastic organisation are always packed with humour and fun but perhaps with a little more comfort too.

... and whilst on the subject of Travelling Lions
