Welcome to this weeks school newsletter! The Grade

5/6s asked to create this weeks newsletter and ourwish was granted! We wanted to write the newsletterbecause our writing focus for the next five weeks isinformation reports. We will be writing reports onanimals, countries and of course newsletter articles.

This year every class focuses on the same text typefor five weeks. This term we have already learnt aboutprocedures and now we are learning about information

    reports.

We thought doing the newsletter would be a greatopportunity to write real life reports.

Next time you are in a classroom have a look at ourwriting posters. The teachers made them at a staffmeeting. We use them to help make sure our writing is inthe correct order and uses the right language. We havea different poster for each text type.

An Interview with the PrincipalBy Alani and Olivia

Mrs Laffan has had a very good week. She went to the junior grades

(1/2s and preps) and listened to them read. They were excellent at

reading their books. Her highlight of the week was getting to meet up

with Maggie and work on the top secret J SC project.

Last week was different for Mrs Laffan due to the campers being away.It was much quieter than usual out in the school grounds. However,Mrs Laffan had more meetings and activities and she couldnt get tocamp because of all of the activities and meetings. This week she hasfewer meetings and fewer activities to attend.

Mrs Laffan loves being a principal and her favourite things about beinga principal are having children visit her and showing her their fantastic five star work. She likes beingwith the student leadership team and is very proud of them when they do their roles.

Mrs Laffan is really looking forward to going to Europe with her mum and sister and she also cant wait

to see the dragons head. She thinks its going to be magnificent when the dragon is put together.

This term all classes have a jar in their classroom. What for? The Family and Friends Group (FAF)

is running a 5 Cent Fundraiser to raise money for our school. The class that raises the mostmoney wins a prize. So far the school has raised over $100. This week we raised a little bit more. When we counted the money on Tuesday these were the totals for the past week:Prep S $0 1/2J $0.70 1/2P $2.15 1/2F $3.953/4K $0.15 3/4V $0 5/6 Team $0.10

The class that raised the most money this week was 1/2F. More money might have been addedsince Tuesday. We wonder who has raised the most money overall?

Keep collecting your five cent coins until the end of the term. This week the school

has raised $7.25. Well done to all classes for collecting 5 cents. Lets try and beatthe totals next week.

    C a t c h i n g u p w i t h M r s H a s t i e B y K a y l a a n d B l a i s eThis week we interviewed Mrs Hastie. We asked her a few questions to get an insight into her week. Readon to find out more!

How has your week been? What were the highlights? As you may know, our 5/6s went off to camp therefore this made my week very confusing because my timetable changed. Myhighlight of the week has been going to 1/2fFto practice Alice in Wonderland. I liked joining in to do the singing.

How did your timetable change? The grades werent in their classroom because they were at specialist classes and I got confused because I didnt know where

they were so it ended up turning into a big treasure hunt! I got to do more yard duty. I also got to teach Miss Fenechs gradewhich was very fun!

What did you do last week?Last week I helped students in every grade with writing, spelling and reading. I also had a meeting with teachers to planwork and I helped Mrs Laffan with some jobs. I had another meeting with Josie, Bende, Alison and Maggie. I had a lot ofmeetings and some with some parents, I worked on some projects to help students and I wrote and read 50-100 emails whichwasnt very fun. But I finished it all luckily!

What is on your To Do list?On my to do list I have to do some reports for Mrs Laffan and I had to plan some work for children.

What are you looking forward to this week?I am looking forward to hearing about camp (see page 13), going to a Techie Breaky with Miss Crowther and also catchingup with iPad tasks.

    Lantern Parade 2014

This years lantern parade is shaping up to be bigger and more beautiful than ever, so if you haventalready, put September 14thin your diaries.

Students in years five and six have been working hard on some of theparades main character lanterns. With this years theme being cycles,(referring to the various stages of the recovery cycle after the initial, and more recent fires), and focusing on the butterfly life cycle, UpperPlenty students were tasked with creating giant caterpillars and arealmost at the decorating stage. Each caterpillar will be made up ofseparate segments carried by our students, and will come together toform the characters for the performance portion of the parade. Eachstudent across prep to year four, have created a small individual

butterfly to carry on their hand, and are encouraged to walk with oursenior students in the parade. This years parade will again be held at the Whittlesea Cattle Sheds, with free community art activities beginning at 3.30pm and the paradestarting at dusk. There will be live music and food available for purchase.

We will require as many senior students as possible to carry the lanternson the night and a letter will be coming home with them this week. Students are also welcome to bringalong pyramid lanterns made in the past, and carry them or give them to a family member to carry. This is one community event not to be missed!!

This week we interviewed Gail and Melissa about what they enjoy about UPPS. Our intervieweeshad different answers to one another and we were very intrigued by their answers. Melissa wasunfortunately working at a different school on Tuesday so a phone call came to the rescue! The following paragraphs are questions and answers that we asked Gail and Melissa on Tuesday.

Q1: How did your week change due to the 5/6 camp?

Gail: I thought it was very, very quiet and I missed you all.

Melissa: I agree with Gail that is was quiet and less injuries occurred during outside times.

Q2: What has been your funniest moment in the past 7 days?

Melissa: One of my funniest moments was trying to put eye drops in Mrs Laffans eyes. I also love

having Gail around. One other thing that happened to me recently was me coming to school and

entering the central learning area and panicking because no one was in the building. Three staff

members cars were in the car park but they were nowhere to be seen. I later found out that they

were all having a meeting in the BER building. Pheew!

Gail: I enjoy working with Mel- she always has a joke to tell. I also had another funny moment that

wasnt very pleasant but may be humorous to others; getting a stick out of the boys toilets with

my hands, it took a while because the stick was jammed in the urinal. Eeew!

Q3: What has been your worst injury you have had to deal with during your time at UPPS?

Gail: I remember a few years ago two students were out in the yard and one got hit with a brick on

his head. There was blood everywhere! And of course, who had to deal with it? Me!!

Melissa: I have had to deal with a broken arm which was very severe. I was trying to calm the

student down until the ambulance came.

Q4: When is your busiest day of the week? Why?

Melissa: Newsletter day because I need to do it all by myself.

Gail: Lunch time because there are a lot of injuries and lots of tears.

Q5: What do you spend most of your time on during the week?

Gail: First aid and children in the sick bay take up a lot of my day because students are always

complaining about sore fingers and sore toes.

Melissa: I spend most of time in first aid as well.

FOR SALE AFTER ASSEMBLY TOMORROW5/6 Team have a variety of items from the market stall still

for sale. There are books, art and craft activities and luckydip prizes. Make an offer. All items need to be sold.

By Mia M and Laikyn POn 12th August, 5/6 Team left for camp. It was a long journey on the bus but we got there eventually.

We learnt lot of new skills like hut building and how to do a low ropes course. There were many activitiesincluding flying fox, giant swing, archery, canoeing, ponding and many more. In the evenings we did a night walkand cooked marshmallows around the campfire. On the second night we had a concert and on the third night wewatched a DVD.

Ethan HHs favourite activity was the giant swing because he went upside down! Alicias favourite activity wasthe giant swing because it was 20 metres high in the air. She got so scared going up she lost her voice so shecouldnt say stop but now when she looks back she is so glad that she didnt say stop because she would have

    regretted it!

We would like to say a big thank you to Miss Crowther, Mrs Placek, Bende, Miss Fenech, Robbie, Robyn and

Leanne for taking us on this amazing journey. We all had SOOOOO much fun!!!!!

JSC Report by Sam and Brian

JSC stands for Junior School Council. The school captains and two people from each

class are on the JSC committee. However, there are no prep students. JSC have

meetings each fortnight. At the meetings we try to make new ideas and things happen to

make the school money and lots of other things.

JSC organises sports equipment for play times. We made a roster of who takes it in and

out of the yard so hopefully it will be more organised and ready to be used.

Lately, we have been working on a sports day. The sports day is where you can wear

whatever sports team jersey you like. You must bring a gold coin donation if you dress

up. Doing this will help the school money wise and then we can buy more sport equipment

and other stuff like that! We will run a few games on the day.

Maggie works with JSC and helps the School Captains to run the meetings. This week we

interviewed her and this is what she had to say about the meetings.

I love to hear all the ideas and opinions of the students to our JSC meeting ideas and see the great projects come to life

as activity days or sometimes a lunch. We have some big and exciting projects coming up that may be discussed in our

next class meetings. I am also a part of a program call the achievement program and help with the activity days and help

with the wellbeing side of thing. I am very happy about the roll I play in our school community.

If you have a suggestion for activities for the sports please list it below. Please write the rules in case we are not aware of the

game. Use another piece of paper if you need more space.

Science by Dylan and BreeannaScience happens every week at UPPS. Every grade has one hour per week with Mr J. Mr J said that if he wasnot teaching science, he would like to teach reading. He would not like to teach art.

This week in science the 5/6s attempted to melt aluminium foil, sugar, plastic and jam. There were veryinteresting effects and things changed a lot. Sugar and plastic changed the most.

Ayrton from prep liked playing with the balloons best. Blake from 1/2F enjoyed completing some science

experiments this week. 3/4Vs Brayden said that his favourite thing was experimenting with food dye and

milk. Cameron from 5/6 Teams favourite thing about Science was using the Lego technic to move different

    machines using pulleys.
