Catriona Jarman is our voice on Seymour FM 103.9 where she does an excellent job in an hour long interview, speaking about all-things Rotary. Below in an extract from her most recent session.
October on the Rotary Interna-tional calendar is Economic and Community Development month. 800 million people worldwide exist on less than $1.90 per day. Rotary offers sustainable solutions to poverty that help to strengthen local communities by providing employment training, job access, financial management and educa-tion. Micro-loans are supplied to individuals for the establishment of very small businesses (street vending, rickshaw taxi services, clothing trades), and agricultural purposes such as the purchase of livestock or for crop development.
An interesting example of Rotary’s involvement in Economic and Community Development is in Tanzania which hosts a population of 33,000 who have been born with the condition of albinism (lack of skin pig-ment) which can be traced back to a genetic mutation in a single ancestor two and a half thousand years ago. The misguided belief is that these people are cursed and as such a number have been murdered or suffered violent attacks. In addition, sufferers from this condition have a poor life expectancy due to the increased risk from cancer caused by working in the sun. Visual impairment is also common.
Rotary have addressed these is-sues by supplying individuals with visual aids, hats and sunscreen. Micro-loans have been provided to encourage indoor livelihoods. Training has been given to health workers, and local members of the population have been encouraged to go into business partnerships with individuals who have albi-nism. Education of the local popu-lation has been important to dispel superstitious belief and to encour-age community integration.
