What we can doEven though confined to his bed, 92-year-old Morrie Boogaart knitted hats for the homeless in Michigan. He had reportedly made more than 8,000 hats in fifteen years.

Instead of focusing on his health or limitations, Mr. Boogaart looked beyond himself and did what he could to place the needs of others above his own. He declared that his work made him feel good and gave him a purpose. He said, “I’m going to do this until I go home to the Lord”—which happened in February 2018. Though most recipients of his hats won’t know his story or how much he sacrificed to create each cap, Morrie’s simple act of persevering love is now inspiring people across the world.

We too can look past our struggles, place others before ourselves, and imitate our loving and compassionate Saviour, Jesus Christ (Philippians 2:1–5). God in the flesh—the King of Kings—took on the “very nature of a servant” in genuine humility (vv. 6–7). Giving His life—the ultimate sacrifice—He took our place on the cross (v. 8). Jesus gave everything for us . . . all for the glory of God the Father (vv. 9–11).

As believers in Jesus, it’s our privilege to show love and demonstrate concern for others through acts of kindness. Even if we don’t think we have much to offer, we can adopt the attitude of servanthood. We can actively seek opportunities to make a difference in people’s lives by simply doing what we can.

From the PrincipalRENOVATIONS FOR 2019In the final days of Term 4, some renovations and refurbishment will begin in two of our upstairs areas. The first stage of work is to convert the area beside the library and behind Miss Aquino’s Year 4 classroom into a second Year 4 classroom (currently the instrumental music suites). This will be another collaborative space similar to many other paired classrooms, and includes an abundance of natural light, and a break-out space option in the currently under-utilised balcony area. The plans also include provision for a third classroom space in future years as our groups of three classes (currently Reception and Year 1) approach their upper primary years.

The second stage is to refurbish what is currently Miss Arnold’s Year 4 classroom in order to create a Performing Arts Centre, with rehearsal and breakout space for Performing Arts, as well as new instrumental suites. Whilst this will mean that we do not have instrumental suites in Term 1, we are already in planning for these lessons to occur in different spaces.

All going well, we are looking forward to a new Year 4 area and a great Performing Arts Space by the end of Term 1, 2019. This will mean that our Creative Space will once again be available for use by many students around the school.

VOLUNTEERS’ MORNING TEAWe look forward to greeting many volunteers at St Paul for a morning tea on Friday, 16 November following assembly (9:30am in the library). Our students have sent invitations from classrooms, however if your invitation has somehow not made it to you, please do come and join us on Friday morning. We also know that there are multitudes of volunteers who will be unable to attend the morning tea, or are too humble to accept our thanks in a public forum. We thank you all!

STUDENT SUPERVISION PRIOR TO 8:30AMPlease be reminded that supervision of students begins at 8:30am. Any students left unsupervised in the front car park or the courts area will be escorted to SPLASH by school staff. It is important that we ensure the safety of all students in the school. Thank you for helping us to keep your children safe.

From the Deputy PrincipalHOUSE STRUCTURESFinal call out for feedback about our House structures for 2019 and beyond. Staff and School Council have both discussed how expanding/reimagining the roles of our current ‘Sports Day teams’ can assist the wellbeing program of the school. There have been a number of conversations this year regarding wellbeing structures at St Paul.

We have seen this year the benefits of ‘House Rotations’, which students have participated in on a few occasions. The idea behind these rotations has been to give students time with groups of teachers and students from different year levels, in activities and settings that allow new relationships to form. The aim ultimately is to form a greater feeling of belonging in students and to create smaller communities within our school to increase the sense of connectedness in all children.

“…both relationships and emotions exist all day in schools, either enhancing connection, engagement and effective learning or inhibiting it. (John) Hattie’s meta-analysis of effective educational practices (2009) identifies the interaction between teacher and student as highly significant to effective education. It is not a question of time so much as heightened awareness of the quality of the many interactions that over time develop either a positive or negative learning environment.” Content and context for learning relationships: A cohesive framework for individual and whole school development Sue Roffey- Educational and Child Psychology, 2010

Do you have any ideas on how can we improve on the current House/Sports Day team structures? Anything that you would like to see unchanged? This is not a question about Sports Day necessarily but rather about how these types of teams/Houses can have an expanded role throughout the year. You may have experienced this in your own time at school or seen this work in other settings. If you any ideas or feedback please email me at [email protected]
