Golf Pro News Continued:

Only One to Go! The final round of this year’s Super Saturday competition is scheduled for Saturday, October 14th. This is your last op-portunity to improve your season totals. Last month’s low net field competition was won by Dwight Vines. Mr. Vines posted a gross 74 for a net “60” to take the monthly honor. Following the final round this month, the winners will be determined in each division and golf shop credits will be awarded to those players. Last year nearly everyone that posted three scores won some portion of the jackpots. Don’t be one score or one stroke short because you did not play the final event. We look forward to seeing you all on the 14th. Entry deadline is Thursday, October 12. The LEADERS through September Red Tee Gross Division Cherryl Meadows 266 Red Tee Net Division Sandy Minder 194 White Tee Gross Division Eddie Brown 230 White Tee Net Division Frank Duda 197 Purple Tee Gross Division Carl Sitler 234 Purple Tee Net Division Frank Lamson Scribner 214 Ray Carter Hole-In-One Congratulations to Ray Carter for his third career ace. His most recent occurred on September 16th at the Tiger Paw #17 hole. His perfect 9-iron shot was witnessed by Monty Stancil and Mike Hembree. Mr. Carter was NOT a member of the hole-in-one club at the time….he is NOW! We are still building a nice jackpot for the next hole-in-one club ace. Shorter Range Hours Now that sunset is an hour early, we are adjusting the practice range closing time for October. All range practice must now be complete by 6:00pm. You may hit or purchase only a small basket of balls after 5:30pm daily. Once the time changes in November, we will again shorten those hours of operation. Thanks for your cooperation. Sole’ Fall Break Sole’ On the Green will be closed during Fall Break (October 14-17). The clubhouse grill and Paws at the Café (the breakfast spot located in the Madren Center front lobby) will be open for business as usual. Thanks for your understanding.

DON GARRETT, CGCS SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Superintendents Report October 2017

Don Garrett, CGCS

September Status

After a little tease of cool weather, September turned back very warm for the last couple of weeks. This gave us a flush of growth near the end of the month as our growth regulators applications from mid-August began to run out, but things seem to be under control now as October has started off cooler. We were very lucky with the remnants of Irma. While the course was a mess from leaves and small debris, we only had 5 trees down and most of those were in the woods or out of the way. The tree that is down near the bridge on #16 will be cleaned up later when we have more time. The greens have done pretty well this month. Two fungicide treatments were made to protect against fall diseases such as leaf spot and large patch, as well as preventative for spring dead spot. We are continuing to patch up the scalped areas as time permits and should have this work near complete by the end of October. With the early month cool snap and some rain, fire ant mounds popped up everywhere. We applied Advion fire ant bait throughout the course and seem to have them under control. Also this month, all of the bunkers were edged.

Overseeding

The par 3 tees (4, 8, 12, & 17) and the practice tees will be overseeded the week of October 9-13. Keep in mind that the overseeded tees will be soggy as we water light and frequently to promote rapid germination and establishment. Once the seed begins to sprout, the tees will be shaggy until the ryegrass begins to mature and the mowers can make a clean cut. Please note that to allow the seed on the practice tees to get off to a good start, we will restrict practice to the mat for a couple of weeks. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

October Goals

Also during October, we will be applying a product to control spring dead spot on the non-overseeded tees, blow-ing leaves and hopefully starting to catch up on other work project work as the temperatures cool down and the grass slows down a little, allowing us to mow a little less frequently. On the greens, we will continue to make our fall fungicide applications as scheduled. As the nights cool down, we will begin to raise the mowing height on the greens to allow for some growth prior to the onset of winter dormancy. This increased mowing height will be offset by the slower growth due to the cooler weather, so greens speeds should remain the same or increase slightly.
