TOMORROW/THURSDAY (5 items) Literacy Across Harlem Day Its the first day of the month, and once again Total Equity Now (TEN) will engage an intergenerational team of community volunteers in promoting reading as a key component of who we are and what we do here in Harlem. For 90 minutes we will: hand out Literacy Across Harlem Day flyers, ask passersby about their reading habits, tell folks why we love reading and why it's so important, and encourage others to carry their "reads" outside of their bags! #RockThoseReads, by carrying reading materials publicly, conspicuously and proudly! Join us on the corner of E. 103rd St. and Lexington Ave. as we come full circle and promote reading along a 90-degree angle between two of our excellent Literacy Across Harlem Day partners in El Barrio, La Casa Azul Bookstore (E. 103rd St. between Park and Lexington Aves.) and East Harlem Cafe (E. 104th St. at Lexington Ave.). Thursday, May 1

another Harlemite dropped off. (Go to www.totalequitynow.org for more partners) Face Out: Doretta Lau, Annie Choi, and Aaron Peck Doretta Lau presents her new story collection, How Does a Single Blade of Grass Thank the Sun? Joining her is Annie Choi, author of Shut Up, You're Welcome, and Aaron Peck, author of The Bewilderments of Bernard Willis. In How Does a Single Blade of Grass Thank the Sun? Doretta Lau presents an updated and whimsical new take on what it means to be Canadian, featuring the children and grandchildren of immigrants, transnational adoptees and multiracial adults who came of age in the 1990sall struggling to find a place in the Western world and using the only language they know to express their hopes, fears and expectations. Shut Up, Youre Welcome, written in Annie Choi's strikingly original and indignant voice, paints a revealing portrait of Annie in all her quirky, compelling, riotous glory. From the time her family ditched her on Christmas to her fathers attachment to the World's Ugliest Table, Choi weaves together deeply personal experiences with laugh-out-loud observations, all of which will delight and entertain you. In Aaron Peck's book, Bernard Willis was an archivist at work in a residency at Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts when he mysteriously disappeared. Two unnamed people, lovers, find Willis's manuscript-in-progress and decide to prepare it for publication. The editors aver that Willis was attempting to live, and write, in a perpetual state of bewilderment. They invite the reader to consider the mystery of his sudden disappearance. The Municipal Art Society Celebrates Janes Walk New Yorks hundreds of diverse neighborhoods contain hidden treasures: architecture, art, and above all, people. This May 3-4, we invite you to join us and explore the unique fabric of our city. Each year, in the spirit of the great urban animator and activist Jane Jacobs, MAS hosts 100+ free guided walks, bike rides and boat tours that celebrate New York City's diverse neighborhoods. Part of an international movement, Jane's Walk NYC facilitates thousands of "walking conversations" that get New Yorkers out to explore our city, and engage with our streets, public spaces and each other. We hope you'll join us. With walks in hundreds of neighborhoods across all five boroughs, youll discover, or rediscover, a unique angle, in a neighborhood you know well, or one two boroughs away. Opportunities are also still available to lead a walk or to sign up as a Janes Walk Wrangler, managing the crucial logistical side of a walk. Then, once you've enjoyed Jane's Walks (or bike rides, or boat tours) - join us at Jane's Birthday Party. We've partnered with the Hester Street Fair to celebrate what would have been Jane Jacobs' 98th birthday with food, drinks, a photo booth, craft projects, a photo wall and more. Become a MAS Member by May 1 and receive a FREE tote bag, as well as exclusive giveaways and discounts at the party. For more information, visit www.mas.org/janeswalk.
