From the Dean’s Desk

The second half of 2015 has been marked by major local and international developments. As a partner of the PRC Board of Nursing writing modules and promoting the National Nursing Core Competency

Standards (NNCCS), UPCN conducted a pilot workshop on NNCCS Spreading and Embedding in the BSN Curriculum workshop last July 27-31, 2015. The Dean likewise is a member of the CHED task force to establish equivalency of Philippine Nursing curriculum with ASEAN countries. In the international scene, the Dean presented at the APEC High Level Meeting on Health and Economy on “Nursing and Educational Linkages” held in Cebu last Aug 30-31, 2015. This was attended by Health Ministers and officials from APEC member economies. The Dean also participated in the training on Global Nursing Leadership Institute (GNLI) organized by the International Council of Nurses, held last Sept 5-11 in Geneva, Switzerland. Learnings in the GNLI were echoed in the Philippine Nursing Leadership Institute organized by Philippine Nurses Association. Also, the UP Nurses Alumni Association Inc. reunion was held at Orange County, California on Aug 7-8. In this gathering, the Dean addressed more than 250 UP Nursing alumni who extended support to UP through their donations and expertise.

A major event this September 24-26, 2015 was the 9th Asia Pacific Emergency Disaster for Nursing Network Meeting on “Strengthening Capacity and Linkages for Effective Disaster Risk Management.” This important meeting was hosted by UPCN as APEDNN Secretariat for 2013-15. We would like to thank WHO WPRO and SEARO,

UP-OIL, UPM and the PNA for their support. APEDNN was established in 2007 through the efforts of WHO and UPCN has been a founding institutional member and Core Working Group member. Related initiatives led by Dean Tuazon include formalizing partnerships of PNA, DOH HEMS, and Phil Red Cross with APEDNN and advocacy for more active participation of nurses in disaster work. This has led to the MOU with PRC.

We are also happy that for the first time, CN students were supported in international events. BSN students presented 2 papers on comprehensive assessments of urban communities in Manila at the 6th International Collaboration on Community Health Nursing Research in Seoul, South Korea on August 19-21, 2015. As part of an MOU with Nagoya University, 2 BSN students with one faculty participated in the Nagoya University Cross-Cultural Student Exchange Program in Japan last December 2015. This exchange has been ongoing for the last 3 years.

UPCN also shares in the honor received by UPCN faculty Mary Grace Anne.P. Batalla for her award as Best Oral Presentation in the Asian Oncology Nursing Society (AONS) 2015 Conference in Seoul in Nov 19-21. She presented her study: “Addressing Hopelessness to Improve Quality of Life in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia with Multiple Organ Infiltration: A Case Study”. UPCN faculty and students make a dent in society, both in the national and international levels, through their excellent and dedicated work. We thank the UP administration and our alumni for all your support for UPCN to continue contributing towards the development of the Nursing and Health.
