Only 15 years afterCanterbury was first settled by the pilgrims Lady Barker inStation Life in New Zealand describes skating trips to Lake

Ida , a magical lake nest led in the shadow of the mountainson Ryton Station . Ryton Station is now operated by Mike andKaren Meares , old family friends , who continue to facil itateice skating at Lake Ida every year . S i nc e t h e n , s h e s b e e n work i n g o n b ecom i n g mor eorgan i sed , showing the others by example , and do ingthings properly — not cutting corners or trying to f indshort cuts , she says . You have to be 100 per cent there and focused, andhopefully your example wil l spread to the others , Adinesay s . But they re such an exper i enced t eam , they knowexactly what s required. I t s the teamwork that Adine bel ieves i s special about theSi lver Ferns . I t doesn t matter whether you ve been in theteam a long t ime or whether you re one of the younger ones ,y ou know you can have a say and you l l be l i s t ened to .That s what I m learning to be good at — l i stening to whatthe others say , and taking i t into account when I have tomake a decis ion . There s a culture in the team where youfeel comfortable speaking up, where you feel you are valued.And I want to hold onto that . Tak ing re spon s ib i l i t y f or mak ing ca l l s on court i s a l s osomething she s learning to accept . If I make the wrong call ,I have to acknowledge that and take respons ibi l i ty for thattoo . Adine says she s t i l l wants to be one of the g ir l s but nowthat she s captain , she s real i sed she has to separate herse lfs l ight ly , be more careful after a match when she might havet o m a k e a s p e e c h o r p e r f o r m s o m e o t h e r o f f i c i a l r o l e . Asked i f there was any indicat ion in her teenage years thatshe had the makings of a captain of the Silver Ferns , she laughs.My s isters would tel l you that I was always bossy . One of seven

g ir l s in the netbal l -mad fami ly l iv ing in Hawera , Adine adoredsport — she p layed netbal l , basketbal l , t ouch — and went ontoOtago Univers ity where she qualif ied with a Bachelor of Phys icalEducation and a law degree .

we have to do a food diary , writing down what weeat every day for a week , she says . And they cante l l i f you cheat because we do a sk in - fo ld fattest regularly. Adine s greatest weakness , she says,i s her sweet tooth — especial ly for chocolate andher favourite , chocolate caramel s l ice . I ve gotthe worst sweet tooth in the world . I l ove food , Ilove going out for dinners . Luckily I m training somuch I can get away with the occas ional treat . A l o n g w i t h t h e f o o d p l a n c o m e s a f i t n e s sprogramme managed by the t eam s t ra iner . I t svery technical nowadays , she says . They g ive uspedometer s t o measure how many s t ep s we takewhen we re train ing and put heart rate mon itorso n u s a t t ra i n i n g t o o , t o make su r e w e r e n o toverdoing it or under-training . You really have tohave that motivation that you love netball to wantto train so hard. There s no doubt that Adine , after playing morethan f ifty internat ional games for New Zealand,has loads of that mot ivat ion to keep her at thepeak of her game for many more y ears t o come .
