families at home, in child care, and in the community.

The Child Development Council believes that a loving

caring family, enriching early learning opportunities,

preventive health care and sound nutrition, and safe

stimulating environments are critical if we, as a

community, want to give children the best possible

start in life.

Children who grow up with these assets are more

likely to be physically healthier, more emotionally

secure and better able to learn. Studies show that

these children benefit in the long run as well, and are

more likely to contribute economically to our

communities.

The Child Development Council offers a wide array of

services which focus on the needs of young children,

and which support the caring adults in their lives.

Dear friends,

Child care and family services are topics that either resonate loudly, or are dismissed as “someone else’s problem.” At the Child Development Council, we see every day how relevant they are. Parents need safe and reliable child care in order to work and support the family. But, its true value lies with the accessibility to good quality education and care for all children, whether in child care or in the home. Those who have it benefit now and in the long run and those who are in poor care miss out on important opportunities like these:

Children thrive on security and stability - From day one, children will learn from their

environment. They need safe stable homes and child care, reliable healthy food and lifestyle to

support their cognitive and physical growth. More than 3,000 children are in child care centers

and homes in our community.

Relationships are the basis for early learning - Children learn from “serve and return”

interactions. Good volleys create the foundation for cognitive, physical, social and emotional

learning. In 2015, the Council visited 214 children in their homes. Moms and dads learned ways

to strengthen their relationships, develop positive parenting strategies, and avoid foster care.

Language rich environments level the playing field - Children prepare

to talk long before they actually start talking. The ability to

communicate is an early indicator of children’s social and emotional

development. Language skills or delays will impact a child’s ability to

participate in kindergarten and school. These skills are practiced every

day at home, in child care, and in the community.

Brains are built over time but grow at the fastest rate in the first five

years of life. In fact, over 700 new neural connections are made every

minute! These little minds are building an architecture that will

support all future learning. One thing is very clear: When it comes to

growing children, the opportunities just can’t wait.

In 2015, the agency distributed:

5,508 diapers

242 cans of formula

42 child care scholarships

590 bus passes

1,869 children fed healthy meals throughout

the year through Child Care Food Program

Our Mission in Action

1,869 children got healthy meals and snacks throughout the year - 289,976 meals were served that

meet Healthy Kids guidelines in home based child care.

674 parents and caregivers learned about the quality, cost, scholarships and where to find child

care.

366 early childhood teachers improved their practice – 366 providers received 2,562 hours of train-

ing; there were 351 site visits to in-home caregivers and afterschool programs for one-to-one support.

131 children received in-home developmental screenings; 130 parents received guidance and

support to boost children’s development.

$393,065 for basic needs (meals, transportation, child care scholarships, etc.) circulated in our

local economy.
