The anthology International Environmental Studies matches major ecological issues with prominent approaches and case studies. The text provides a dynamic reading experience, transdisciplinary perspectives, and opportunities for critical thinking.
The book examines six key ecological issues: food systems and agriculture, biodiversity, fresh water resources, energy, waste, and climate change. The text explores these issues using a variety of disciplines and approaches, with a particular focus on the unique economic, political, and social contexts affecting people’s access to natural resources. Case studies from around the world help illustrate the complexity of environmental issues with real-world examples.
International Environmental Studies is an excellent reader for introductory environmental and global studies courses, as well as mid-career professional programs and practitioners seeking an introduction to global environmental issues.

Handbook of Vocational Rehabilitationand Disability Evaluation
Application and Implementation of the ICF
For persons with chronic illnesses and disabling injuries, work prospects--es-pecially for meaningful work with decent conditions--have traditionally been poor. With global efforts from the UN, WHO, ILO, and other bodies focusing attention on this wide-reaching issue, innovative tools are needed to translate large-scale goals into real-world outcomes.
The framework offered by the Handbook of Vocational Rehabilitation and Disability Evaluation highlights the complex challenges and opportunities in-volved in enabling re-entry into the workforce. Geared to ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health) standards, this timely reference outlines current science-based methods in assessing impairment and capabilities and emerging approaches to management specifically relating to work participation. Separate chapters are devoted to evaluation and rehabilita-tion guidelines for individuals with brain injury, chronic musculoskeletal pain, mental illness, and other disabling conditions. And the chapters on ICF-based functioning measurement review the data on widely-used clinician- and pa-tient-reported instruments and the recent Work Rehabilitation Questionnaire (WORQ). Featured in the Handbook:
The impact of chronic disease on work participation and its implications for intervention and management.
Vocational assessment and job placement. Spinal cord injury: vocational rehabilitation and disability evaluation. Critical issues for mental health management in vocational
rehabilitation. Clinician-reported outcome measures: experiences from multicenter
follow-up. ICF-based tools in rehabilitation toward return-to-work.
The Handbook of Vocational Rehabilitation and Disability Evaluation is of critical interest to researchers, educators, and students in disability- and work-related fields. It is also a practical resource outside the campus setting, aiding those providing services to, as well as policymakers involved in improving the lives of, persons with disabilities.

Studies in Early Franciscan Sources, Volume 4
e Rules of Isabelle of FranceVOL4
An English Translation WITH Introductory Study
by Sean L. Field
Isabelle of France (1225-1270) is best known as the sister of St. Louis and the founder of the female Franciscan community of Longchamp near Paris. In 1259 Pope Alexander IV ap-proved the important new rule for this community which Isabelle had co-authored with a team of leading Franciscan theologians, including St. Bonaventure. is was only the second female-authored rule--a er Clare of Assisi’s 1253 Form of Life--ever to be approved by the papacy. Moreover, in 1263 Isabelle secured a revision of her rule from Pope Urban IV, which granted her controversial desire to have her sisters be known as Sorores minores, analogous to the male Fratres minores. In this form the Isabelline rule was adopted by numerous houses, particularly in France and England. In e Rules of Isabelle of France, Sean L. Field o ers the rst published English translations of both versions of this rule, together with an close study of their origins and interest for Franciscan history. e volume also illuminates the larger context around Isabelle of France and Longchamp by including translations (by Larry F. Field) of ve papal letters to or concerning Isabelle.
Sean Field provides us with a reader-friendly, yet impeccably documented introduction to the tangle of rules for enclosed medieval women centered around Isabelle of Longchamp in France, her contemporary biographer Agnes of Harcourt, Cardinal Hugolino’s 1219 Form of Life, and Pope Innocent IV’s Rule of 1247. In addition to the rst English translation of Isabelle’s rule of 1259, her 1263 revision and their preliminary papal letters, one of the additional values of Field’s work is his focus on the institutional understanding of humility and minority, identifying values in the evolution of both male and female Franciscan groups. is study is chock full of tempting new leads for further investigation spelled out toward the conclusion of Field’s introduction in the section, “Unresolved Issues.” - Ingrid Peterson, OSF

Human Milk Biochemistry and Infant Formula Manufacturing Technology
OODHEAD PUBLISHING SERIES IN FOOD SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND NUTRITIONW OODHEAD PUBLISHING SERIES IN FOOD SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND NUTRITIONW
Human milk is the best food for infants since not only does breast milk provide a source of nutrition, but it contains biological components that help infants to develop and grow normally. Modern infant formula is designed as human milk substitute for infant consumption under one year. Human Milk Biochemistry and Infant Formula Manufacturing Technology reviews the history of bottle-feeding, and its advantages and disadvantages compared with breast-feeding, the trends and new developments in infant formula formulation and manufacturing.
Since infant formula substitutes for human milk, its composition must match that of human milk as closely as possible. Quality control of infant formula is also essential to ensure product safety, as infants are particularly vulnerable food consumers. This book reviews the latest research into human milk biochemistry and best practice in infant formula processing technology and quality control.
Chapters in Part I cover the variations in chemical composition, the bioactive components of human milk, and the practice of human milk banking. Part II reviews the infant formula formulation and processing including the guidelines, ingredients and processing technology used. Part III covers the formula analysis, component interactions and processing damage, quality control and product regulation.
This book provides a valuable source of information for professionals in the dairy industry (especially those in the infant formula industry), and academics and graduate students in this field.
Dr Mingruo Guo is Professor in the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences, University of Vermont, USA. He is highly regarded for his teaching, research and product development in the area of functional foods. He also holds an adjunct professor position at Jilin University, Changchun, China.

The book offered an opportunity to refresh my understanding of concepts I learned in school. But more importantly, it also offered an opportunity to grasp recent changes in our understanding of how forests work and how we can use forests while ensuring sustainability for future generations. Thom McEvoy does an outstanding job covering the critical components that make these two fields of study so important to today’s forest owners, loggers and foresters.
Aldo Leopold, famed American Ecologist and Forester, encouraged us to ‘think like a mountain’ when considering ecology and land use. This book provides a valuable primer for anyone to developecological literacy regarding forests and our efforts tomanage them.
McEvoy is able to distill the essential elements of complex topics and relate them to forest management in a way that is very useful for anyone interested indelving into the world of forests and their use and conservation.

Bondarchuk’s War and Peace Literary Classic to Soviet Cinematic Epic

acclaim. This book tells the story of how the Soviet government, military, and culture ministry—all eager to reclaim this Russian masterpiece from their Cold War enemies—pulled together to make Bondarchuk’s War and Peace possible. Bondarchuk, an actor who had directed only one film, was an unlikely choice for director, and yet he produced one of the great works of Soviet cinema, a worthy homage to Tolstoy’s masterpiece—an achievement only sweet-ened when Russia’s Cold War adversary recognized it with the Academy Award’s Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film of 1968.
Denise Youngblood examines the film as an epic (and at seven hours long, released in four parts, at a cost of nearly $700,000,000 in today’s dollars, it was certainly that), a literary adaptation, a complex reflection on history, and a significant artifact of the cultural Cold War between the US and the USSR. From its various angles, the book shows us Bondar-chuk’s extraordinary film in its many dimensions—aesthetic, political, and historical—even as it reveals what the film tells us about how Soviet patriotism and historical memory were constructed during the Cold War.
Denise J. Youngblood is professor of history at the University of Vermont. Her many books include Russian War Films: On the Cinema Front, 1914–2005, and, with Tony Shaw, Cinematic Cold War: The American and Soviet Struggle for Hearts and Minds, both published by Kansas.
Sergei Bondarchuk’s War and Peace, one of the world’s greatest film epics, originated as a consequence of the Cold War. Conceived as a response to King Vidor’s War and Peace, Bondarchuk’s
surpassed that film in every way, giving the USSR one small victory in the cultural Cold War for hearts and minds. This book, taking up Bondarchuk’s masterpiece as a Cold War film, an epic, a literary adaptation, a historical drama, and a rival to Vidor’s Hollywood version, recovers—and ex-pands—a lost chapter in the cultural and political history of the twentieth century.
Like many great works of literature, Tolstoy’s epic tale proved a major challenge to filmmakers. After several early efforts to capture the story’s grandeur, it was not until 1956 that King Vidor dared to bring War and Peace to the big screen.
