In the era of 3D, glasses are not enough to understand the world.

SWPS identifies and explains the new dimensions within our society.

Page 3: University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw

The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is a unique establishment founded on people with bold ideas. The students are the university's focal point. We feel responsible for the development of their attitudes and characters. As we see it, every human being is different. We help our students discover their talents and interests. As well as acquiring general knowledge and practical skills, we focus on the development of so-called soft skills. We believe that this will help SWPS students become valuable members of society. This ambitious task necessitates taking daring decisions which may not conform to stereotypes or standard ways of thinking.

Educating people to live in a changing world

The mission of the university is to support students in fulfilling their professional dreams, by making available to them a modern approach to education based on modern know-how. Our intention is to educate honest, open-minded and responsible people who enjoy their achievements and are proud of them. We want our graduates to successfully operate in dynamically changing market conditions, look for new ideas and solutions, be ready to change and be capable of shaping their social environment.

The power of knowledge put into practice

SWPS is a university open to new ideas. We cooperate with a range of cultural, artistic and business institutions as well as social organisations. We operate in an environment where, on top of knowledge and passion, practical skills and a flexible attitude to work are equally valuable. SWPS places special emphasis on developing this competence among its students. The university also supports students in pursuing their academic and professional careers.

Education is our passion

We have created solid foundations for the university following a path of knowledge, curiosity about the world and people, recognising market needs and scientific progress, as well as listening to what young people have to say. SWPS offers education in the true sense of the word encompassing investigation and research together with a practical passion for learning.Ours is a unique university, offering knowledge and professional skills as well as providing opportunities to develop our students’ interests. We have created the conditions to stimulate our independent thinking and develop the habit of constant advancement and lifelong learning. All these elements contribute to a university which successfully marries passion with pragmatism and an understanding of the challenges posed by the world as we know it.

A new dimension in education

It is not so very important for a person to learn facts. For that he does not really need a college. He can learn them from books. The value of an education in a

liberal arts college is not the learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think something that cannot be learned from textbooks.

SWPS has certainly met my expectations and I feel lucky to study here. I was

impressed by how open the university was to foreigners. SWPS has lots to offer:

interesting lectures, the possibility to participate in themed workshops, a great

variety of sports, cultural events and communication with foreign students that

improves your language skills.

SWPS – Poland’s top private university

SWPS has been granted the right to award PhD degrees in Psychology, Cultural Studies, Sociology and Law. It has also been given the right to award post-doctoral titles to PhD degree holders in the fields of Psychology and Cultural Studies.

Heart of Europe

Poland lies in Central Europe and it can be easily reached from every part of the globe, not to mention easy access from its neighbouring countries: Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania, Belarus, Russia or Ukraine. You can also travel to Poland from Sweden by ferry, or from London by plane (which takes around 2.5 hours). Poland is famous for its breathtaking mountains, sea and lakes. Your time in Poland will be a wonderful opportunity to develop your passion for sports and outdoor activities.

Heart of Poland

Warsaw is the commercial and academic centre of Poland. It is an extremely vibrant and fast-growing city with 2 million residents, including 300,000 students. The city provides unlimited opportunities to study, work and enjoy culture. In fact, it is the most multicultural city in the region with people from 120 countries living and working here. You can get to the university from the city centre by bus or tram in around 20 minutes. The university’s premises are found in the unique pre-war district of Praga, which year on year attracts hordes of tourists.

International Studies

Our students have the opportunity to expand their horizons by not only learning from prominent experts, but also by going abroad as a part of the exchange programmes that we offer. They can choose among Europe, Turkey, Korea, China, and the US. SWPS is a truly international centre of learning. Not only do we send our students on exchange programmes, but we also welcome those who decide to study in Poland. Our psychology students have the opportunity to spend a part of their study programme at our partner universities in the US (California State University) or the UK (Bangor University). They are granted an international diploma from SWPS and the chosen foreign partner.SWPS is a truly international educational institution. We have over 200 students from 5 continents and 40 different countries.

What is the nature of our university's success? We do not limit ourselves to disseminating

knowledge; we create it, by conducting research and looking for the practical applications

of our discoveries. We change the world in the way knowledge changes us.

Social research

The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is an important research centre. Research projects conducted at SWPS are of theoretical value and can be applied in practice. The university ensures that research opens up new opportunities and enhances quality of life in order to change the world around us. One of the university’s strategic goals for the next 4 years is to significantly commercialise its research results.

Staff training & research

To date, SWPS has promoted 101 doctors while 22 individuals have been appointed associate professors. These new staff members are having a direct, positive influence on the state of Polish scientific research. What is more, many of our staff have been involved in international research projects.

The university grants PhDs in the following aca-demic disciplines:• Psychology (Warsaw)• Psychology (Wrocław)• Cultural Studies (Warsaw)• Sociology (Warsaw)• Law (Warsaw)

SWPS has the right to award post-doctoral titles (associate professors) in the following academic disciplines:• Psychology (Warsaw)• Psychology (Wrocław)• Cultural Studies (Warsaw)

International & interdisciplinary research

In 2012, SWPS researchers were involved in 178 research projects whose value exceeded PLN 15 million. 78 of these projects were subsidised by the National Science Centre, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Foundation for Polish Science and foreign funds. The remaining projects were sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education as part of its statutory activity. The fact that SWPS obtains grants from external institutions is clear evidence of the high quality of the research involved. The university is constantly involved in interdisciplinary and international research projects. Ten projects which have got off the ground are financed by the European Social Fund as part of the Human Capital Programme (over PLN 31 million).

Ninth in Poland

SWPS is among the most active research institutions in Poland, according to a league table of beneficiaries of the National Science Centre (NSC). In 2011-2012, 29 SWPS projects were sponsored by the NSC (over PLN 8 million). Among the 131 research centres operating in the social sciences and humanities, SWPS was ranked 9th with respect to the number of grants received. The university beat many recognised public universities and research centres. The university is also a strong leader among private colleges. SWPS Professor Roman Cieślak, PhD, Vice-Rector for Research, said:“This data confirms that SWPS successfully combines educational and research activities. We successfully compete with the best research centres in Poland”.

A new dimension in research

Best private university

SWPS’s strong position in the education market has been reinforced by the league table of Polish universities and colleges developed by “Perspektywy” magazine and “Rzeczpospolita” newspaper. In 2013 SWPS was ranked the best private social sciences and humanities university in the country. The university has maintained this position since 2007.

SWPS graduates wanted

According to a league table commissioned in 2013 by “Wprost” magazine, SWPS is among the best private universities in Poland, and was ranked second by Poland’s employers. SWPS is also the only private university offering social sciences and foreign languages that is regarded as one of the most popular by employers. The researchers polled Poland’s 500 largest companies.

Most popular university

Reports drawn up by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education summing up recruitment results suggest that full-time studies at SWPS are most popular among people who choose private schools. In the academic year 2012/2013 more than 3,000 people decided to study at SWPS.

High level education

The high level of studies at SWPS has been confirmed by the Polish Accreditation Committee, which monitors education in Poland. The Faculty of Psychology in Warsaw and SWPS faculties in Wrocław and Sopot have been positively rated, confirming the high level of Psychology Studies. The Committee has also recognised the quality of education in Sociology, Cultural Studies and Modern Languages.

Leader in Cultural Studies

The Faculty in Wrocław, the Faculty of Psychology and the Faculty of Cultural Studies and Languages came first in the league table of social and cultural institutions prepared by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Our high ratings have resulted in considerable subsidies for statutory activity including academic research, the purchase of research equipment as well as cooperation between Polish academics and foreign research centres.

SWPS continues to attract many illustrious lecturers, experienced practitioners and researchers who head innovative and groundbreaking research projects.

Textbook authors

Students all over Poland use textbooks written by SWPS professors. Authors of academic publications include Professor Jan Strelau and Professor Dariusz Doliński (“Psychology. An Academic Textbook”), Professor Paweł Boski (“The Cultural Framework of Social Behaviour”), Professor Tomasz Zaleśkiewicz (“Economic Psychology”), Professor Wiesław Godzic (“Audio and Visual Media”) and Professor Witold Wołodkiewicz (“European and Roman Law. Drafts in the History of European Legal Culture”).

Influential practitioners

People who teach at SWPS are also practitioners, among them is Professor Marek Chmaj, a solicitor and founder of Chmaj and Associates legal offices; Lidewij Edelkoort (Time magazine named her one of the 25 most influential fashion experts of our times); Professor Rafał Ohme, an expert in the psychology of persuasion, emotions and the subconscious.

MASTER programme

As part of the MASTER programme, the Foundation for Polish Science recognises illustrious scientists who gain exceptional academic achievements and at the same time educate younger faculty members. In the 2011 programme, four SWPS lecturers were recognised in the social sciences and humanities category, namely Professor Aleksandra Łuszczyńska, Professor Leszek Koczanowicz, Professor Grzegorz Sędek and Professor Bogdan Wojciszke. The nine prize-winning academics included the above lecturers from SWPS and five from public universities.

Acknowledged experts

SWPS employees have an impact on public opinion; every month there are approximately 870 media comments featuring SWPS faculty members. The most renowned experts include Professor Bogdan Wojciszke, an expert in perceiving and evaluating people and the psychology of power; Professor Radosław Markowski, a political scientist commenting on Polish politics; Professor Klaus Bachmann, an expert in European issues and a columnist of “Gazeta Wyborcza”; Professor Katarzyna Popiołek from the Katowice campus who regularly comments on social problems covered by the media. SWPS experts are popular commentators for TVN, TVN24, TVP1, TVP2, Radio TOK FM and are reviewers for “Gazeta Wyborcza”, “Rzeczpospolita”, “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna”, “Newsweek”, “Polityka”, “Wprost” and “Charaktery”.

Illustrious guests

Our students learn from the best academic lecturers in Poland and abroad. SWPS regularly welcomes visiting academics, like Robert Cialdini (a leading world expert in the psychology of marketing and influencing people), Philip Zimbardo (a distinguished social psychologist) and Bruce Newman (former advisor to US President Bill Clinton).

The Student Legal Advice Clinic is where our law students learn about providing legal advice and finding out how to cooperate with clients, taking their first steps on the road to becoming future lawyers. The students are supported by members of the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences.

Culture at your fingertips

Cultural events abound at SWPS: every month the ‘High Voltage Culture’ gallery in Warsaw, Communication Design in Wrocław and 2πr in Poznań host exhibitions and meetings with artists. SWPS organises film screenings, (photography and graphics) workshops as well as meetings with prominent representatives of cultural circles and the media. The university’s guests have included Igor Morski (a press illustrator), Mariusz Forecki and Agnieszka Rayss (photographers), Krystyna Janda, Jerzy Stuhr and Ireneusz Czop (actors), Grzegorz Miecugow and Jarosław Kuźniar (journalists).

Students associations

Students can pursue their academic passions at SWPS. To date, students have formed nearly 50 student associations focusing on the psychology of sport, psychology of advertising, cinematography, sexology and financial law. Among them is the

first Student Association of Aviation and Space Psychology in Europe; it organises meetings with famous astronauts and pilots, tests martian robots and establishes live connections with the international space station.

The SWPS choir

The pride of SWPS is its choir, which was established in 2001. It brings together a group of talented students who add splendour to all the University’s ceremonies. They perform in concert all over Poland with an extremely diverse repertoire including sacral, folk and pop music. An example of this diversity was their performance of music from some of the world’s best known video games during the Video Games Festival held at Warsaw’s Torwar Expo Centre.

While pursuing their interests, students also take part in meetings with well-known politicians and media representatives, are active members of the student self-government, the university’s Academic Sports Association and attend the annual Student Festival of Science. They also have the opportunity to cooperate with the university as part of the Youth Zone project where they conduct workshops in self-presentation, combatting stress and effective learning in secondary schools.

Impressive range of courses

SWPS regularly tailors its courses and teaching methodology to market needs. The university offers its students the opportunity to follow numerous academic paths: interdisciplinary (Bachelors and Masters) studies in Social Sciences and Humanities in more than a dozen faculties, joint Bachelors-Masters degrees in Law and Psychology, PhDs in Cultural Studies, Law, Psychology and Sociology, as well as post– –graduate studies.

The university offers nearly 110 unique specialisations and majors which make it possible to adapt the curriculum to students’ individual needs and interests. Certain studies are conducted entirely in English, therefore students have the opportunity to not only acquire detailed knowledge in a particular subject but also a high level of linguistic competence in English.

Partner Relations

SWPS places special emphasis on partnership and trust between teachers and students. Both groups embark on interesting research projects, attend conferences and cultural events. Close relations with teachers ensure exceptional

studying conditions. Not only do lecturers assist in discovering and developing student potential but they also positively influence task completion and the acquisition of skills based on individual needs and plans.

Students prepared for future jobs

SWPS also ensures that its students are well prepared for their future jobs. Every year students take part in paid internships, meetings with professional advisors, training in entrepreneurship as part of the Young Manager Academy project, as well as meetings with representatives of companies (Knowledge Transfer Forum). In this way, SWPS students learn from the best specialists and practitioners on the market; they also have the opportunity to learn more about the job market and to establish their first professional contacts.

Research into the careers of SWPS graduates suggests that, at the time of leaving the university, 90% of them have had some professional experience, while 84% claimed that the university prepared them for their future jobs. Moreover 45% of SWPS graduates started work before they even received their diplomas.

Graduate business success

SWPS does its utmost to put its graduates in the best possible position in a changing and demanding job market.

SWPS graduates on the job market

Research into SWPS graduate careers conducted in 2012 suggests that they work chiefly in training and education, healthcare, HR management, marketing, advertising, PR as well as in R&D. According to 70% of graduates, their work is in line with their education profile while 85% of them are pleased with their professional development. SWPS graduates are highly entrepreneurial: more than 30% of them run their own businesses and 20% hold managerial and executive positions. These positive results stem from the university’s attitude to education: students are prepared for the challenges posed by a changing job market. SWPS ensures that students acquire first-hand knowledge and, even more importantly, specific skills which are much appreciated by employers.

Business success

Hubert Anyżewski is one of the first Polish experts in user experience and service design. He owns UseLab which develops projects in the area of electronic services and products for the largest local companies in Poland as well as international companies. He accumulated his experience and knowledge at the SWPS Faculty of Psychology, majoring in Social Psychology of IT and Communications (SPIK).

There are numerous examples of SWPS graduates who have become successful in business: Anna Tarnowska who coordinates HR projects in Europe, North America and Asia for Citibank International; Dorota Wiśniewska-Juszczak, PhD, conducts training courses for managers; Jarosław Rzepecki is Head of the Information Architecture Department for HYPERmedia; Maja Szumska-Stolarczyk is a Senior Project Manager at Millward Brown SMG/KRC Poland while Emilia Ambrożek is operational director at Marionnaud Polska.

Innovative entrepreneurship for students

The Career Office at SWPS keeps in touch with current students, former students and employers, collects information about interesting internships and free training courses. The university has also developed a special project on “Entrepreneurship: my company or how to compete in today’s world” aimed at preparing students to run their own business. Students are provided with practical tips on managing projects as well as marketing and sales processes. They find out about the financial aspects of running a business and how to manage customer relations. Classes are conducted by business practitioners, including a director of the Raiffeisen Brokerage House, representatives of the Touch Ideas agency and the President of the Atlas Group.

The curriculum is consistently developed and expanded to include unique specialities in response to the needs of the changing world. The curriculum is tailored to current European standards of teaching psychology and complies with the requirements of the European Certificate in Psychology (EuroPsy), which provides qualification standards for psychologists and grants access to the profession in many European countries. The faculty’s lecturers are distinguished researchers who are passionate about their profession and willing to share their knowledge and experience with students. The faculty’s lecturers include experts recognised in Poland and abroad, including Professor Andrzej Falkowski, Professor Grzegorz Sędek, Professor Paweł Boski, Professor Krystyna Skarżyńska and Professor Jerzy Trzebiński.

Majors tailored to the job market

Students tailor their education to their individual interests and professional plans. The modern curriculum makes it possible for them to discover the opportunities offered to them by psychology in various situations, at work and in real life. The faculty trains future psychologists as well as students planning a career in the media, market research, HR management, marketing and advertising, PR, education, healthcare or IT research and design i.e. in industries where

psychological knowledge and competence are conducive to success.

Top psychology faculties in the country

In 2012 and 2013, SWPS was ranked third by “Perspektywy” magazine in the category of universities with psychology faculties. Together with Poland’s two largest universities, SWPS was top of the list of all universities and colleges in the country, public and private alike. The high level of psychology studies at SWPS has been confirmed by an audit conducted by the Polish Accreditation Committee in 2010: the studies offered by the Faculty of Psychology were rated very highly.

Research development

The Faculty of Psychology is a research centre providing opportunities to take part in research programmes. In 2012 the faculty carried out 55 projects of a total value amounting to approximately PLN 2.5 million. Students take part in research experiments and benefit from grant programmes conducted by their lecturers. Students can also carry out research projects and present their results at the annual Student Festival of Science. To provide the best possible research conditions, SWPS has established an Experimental Research Laboratory and a Centre for Psychological Survey Techniques.

Acquiring practical skills

SWPS provides students with practical skills and social competences which are much sought after on the job market. Students enhance their skills during classes and as part of regular “Law and Coffee” meetings where, together with academic teachers, they exchange opinions on the legal aspects of developments covered by the media and provide consultancy services in the Student Legal Advice Clinic. They are also active in “Argenta Fibula” Civil Law and Civil Procedure Student Associations.

Important centre of jurisprudence

Within less than 4 years, the faculty has attained a position as an important centre of jurisprudence in Poland. In 2013, only a few years after its establishment, the faculty was ranked fourth among private law schools by “Rzeczpospolita” newspaper. In the “foreign cooperation” category, SWPS proved to be the best private university,

and was ranked right behind Poland’s leading universities. The Faculty of Law was also highly rated in a league table commissioned by “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna” in 2011 and 2012; the newspaper positively assessed the competence of the lecturers and preparation of graduates for the job market.

Research activities

The faculty is involved in research in environmental protection, the condition of the legal professions and the freedom of the mass media. Among our completed projects, the most notable include “Penal protection of minors from harmful content presented by the media” and “The legal status and protection of animals”.

Teachers and practitioners

Classes are conducted by recognised academic lecturers and legal practitioners: Professor Jacek Sobczak, a judge in the Penal Chamber of the Supreme Court; Professor Andrzej Szlęzak, a senior partner in Sołtysiński, Kawecki&Szlęzak attorneys at law, and Bogudar Kordasiewicz, a lawyer associated with K&L Gates and Ryszard Czerniawski, PhD, Deputy Polish Ombudsman.

Law and Coffee

When I came up with the idea of the “Law and Coffee” meetings SWPS helped me put it into operation. As a result, we can now present our opinions, find out about alternative views and look at issues covered by the media from a lawyer’s perspective.

The faculty educates future cultural studies experts, translators, language teachers, journalists, sociologists and experts in international relations. The faculty has more than 2,000 students.

Interesting interdisciplinary faculties

Education is provided for by representatives of numerous academic disciplines: modern languages, cultural studies, international relations, sociology and political science. Drawing on the potential of the faculty’s teachers, SWPS has created a diverse variety of interdisciplinary studies. The faculty offers studies in modern languages: English, Romance Languages and Scandinavian Languages. Graduates of English are qualified to teach the language and acquire the necessary skills to become translators and interpreters. Thanks to cooperation with academics and companies from Sweden, students of Scandinavian languages learn about the culture and habits of Sweden. All students of modern languages are trained in linguistic skills and acquire knowledge in respective cultural studies which enhances the graduates’ competitiveness on the labour market. Asian Studies (China and East Asia) is a pioneering programme, the only one of its type in Poland. Students undertake intensive studies of Chinese and find out about the region’s culture and traditions, and the current geopolitical and economic situation. This knowledge will allow them to become involved in business and cultural projects with Asian enterprises. Students are offered the opportunity to study in China for one semester. The interdisciplinary nature of the faculty allows students to follow their preferred teaching path, to adjust it to their interests and needs and select modules from various areas offered by the faculty.

Practicality is everything

Together with students, the faculty organises regular cultural and academic events. Members of the Cinematography Association prepare film screenings, meetings with film professionals, conduct discussions and hold conferences. Furthermore, the Film Laboratory project, established at SWPS in cooperation with Studio Munka, gives students the opportunity to be a part of the creative process of writing film scripts and making films like “Lęk wysokości” (‘Fear of Heights’) directed by Bartosz Konopka and “Dzień kobiet” (‘Women’s Day’) directed by Maria Sadowska.

Students acquire practical skills by cooperating with academics as part of research projects. Individuals active in the Cultural Studies Association have carried out field research on projects such as “The city of Zamość as perceived by tourists”. Cultural Studies and Sociology students have observed urban life in Copenhagen, to find out how the growth of a large metropolis affects human life. Also, future translators have prepared a video description of the feature film “Chopin. Desire for Love”. What is more, students have the opportunity to publish translations of important texts from English on “The Translator”, an SWPS online platform.

Crème de la crème

Students learn from well-known experts including Professor Wojciech Burszta, an anthropologist, Professor Wiesław Godzic, an expert in media and cinematography, Professor Hanna Komorowska, an expert in the methodology of teaching foreign languages, Professor Tadeusz Rachwał, an expert in English and American literature and culture, Professor Piotr Sałustowicz who specialises in social policy as well as the practitioners: Marcin Zaborski, a journalist associated with Polish Radio 3 and Jarosław Kuźniar from TVN.

Post-graduate development

More than fifteen years of experience in conducting training and post-graduate studies allows SWPS to rapidly and effectively respond to the needs of course participants. The university is also extremely keen on identifying business needs, analysing the labour market, finding inspiration in the academic research of its employees and is open to student opinion. This is needed in order to develop programmes which fulfil both the needs of the market and the needs of the student.

Practical curricula

Each curriculum is developed as follows:1. A detailed diagnosis and analysis of student needs is undertaken. 2. A study curriculum is developed. The curriculum team, which consists of academics and practitioners, ensures that the curricula reflect business needs and the latest research.3. The curriculum is verified. A team of reviewers painstakingly analyses the curriculum content to ensure its quality and the optimum selection of teachers and trainers. This process guarantees that whichever programme is selected by students it will satisfy their needs and enhance their professional competence and personal development. SWPS is innovative in its educating of specialists in newly established areas like service and experience design or global media (including information architecture, utility research, accessibility and cross channel communication). The university places great emphasis on studies in the area of psychology and psychotherapy. The latest know-how and SWPS research results

translate effectively into practical solutions. The process applies also to post-graduate students, who can use their professional experience in the course of their studies. For several years now, SWPS has successfully conducted interdisciplinary projects for companies, corporations and state institutions such as, Medicover, Warta, Volkswagen Bank, the Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of Justice and the National School of Judiciary and Public Prosecution. SWPS owes its success to its individual approach to clients and tailoring its programme to their specific needs.

Excellent study organization

SWPS ensures that students study in comfortable and professional surroundings. Modular-type classes are conducted in small groups allowing for more programme flexibility. For even greater flexibility, e-learning is used in place of some classes and lectures. Specialist teams in five cities oversee the classes and ensure they are user-friendly and limit formalities to a minimum.

More than 110 majors

SWPS offers more than 110 majors as part of post-graduate studies including Psychology and Psychotherapy, Conflict and Crisis Situations, Medicine, Management, Law, Marketing, PR, Design and Creation, Personal Development and Specialist Translation. A list of all our post-graduate study programmes and training courses can be found at: www.podyplomowe.pl.
