Teaching evaluations and other evidence of quality teaching must be provided and should accurately
summarize ALL of your teaching activities. The absence of teaching evaluations may adversely affect your
application for Promotion and/or Tenure.
Philosophy of Teaching:
Briefly describe your philosophy of teaching and how you apply it to different types of learners, e.g. medical
students, graduate students, residents, fellows.
Informatics comes alive when learners have access to rich clinical data for either developing or applying
informatics methods and systems. Since arriving at KUMC to establish a new division of medical
informatics, my educational role (influenced by my philosophy) has prioritized creating a robust
environment of a) governance focused on reducing research barriers, b) data from multiple clinical and
research source systems, and c) low cost open-source methods/systems for our campus so that faculty,
students, and staff have the ability to conduct 21st century data driven research.
We’ve approached growing an investigator community by first creating well defined governance processes
for allowing faculty to sponsor students and staff efficiently as often it’s the graduate students, residents,
and fellows who are at an early point in their career to invest in data intensive methods as an element of
their research. Second, we use a self-service model that allows investigators to directly use informatics
tools but also consult with myself and informatics staff. We specifically created a clinical informatics
coordinator role to serve as the key liaison for learning as well as act as the honest broker for data
extraction. Third, we established clinical informatics clinics for group learning and have started an
intensive summer workshop devoted to the HERON data repository in 2013 which is entering its third
year. I also give specialized didactic lectures and seminars in specific courses and departmental meetings
for students and faculty. As a result, we’ve had considerable adoption of informatics methods over the first
four years since the establishment of the division (over 400 users of the HERON data repository and over
1600 users of the REDCap Electronic Data Capture system).
Were the campus to integrate medical informatics into formal courses for the medical school, masters of
clinical research, or other programs, I would see our rich data environment as a key resource to ensure the
students translate didactic content into practice through laboratories requiring team based exercises and
projects. To further that translation, we piloted a course, Medical Informatics Driven Clinical Research, as
an independent study course (PRVM 806) for the Masters of Clinical Research Curriculum
(https://informatics.gpcnetwork.org/trac/Project/wiki/HERONIndependentStudy) and it is now a formal
Course (PVRM 868) and the student’s progress is also available online
https://informatics.gpcnetwork.org/trac/Project/wiki/PVRM868BiomedicalInformaticsDrivenClinicalRes
earch2016 There is a persistent translational gap between traditional biostatistics and epidemiologic
training and the ability to conduct big data research from heterogenous clinical data sources that can be
addressed through informatics training. While our proposal with Dr. Nick Anderson at the University of
California-Davis and other national colleagues to develop our offering into courses as a NIH Collaboration
Innovation Award proposal: (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-15-173.html) was
unsuccessful, we will continue to work through the i2b2 foundation and other NIH opportunites such as
partnering on the NIH CTSA Program Data to Health (CD2H) Coordinating Center (U24) that will start in
2018 .

professional and academic service.
1. Professional Service (Patient Care):
The diverse area of Professional Service includes patient care. Select measures that most clearly and
concisely document your accomplishments and the value of these activities to the School of Medicine and
the University. Measure of both quantity and quality of activities are required. If necessary, applicants
should provide brief descriptions to assist reviewers. Measures of patient care activities include: number
of patients, time allocation in clinical activity, procedures completed, Relative Value Units (RVUs), and
value to the School of clinical service. If the primary quality evaluation is the subjective assessment of
peers, this should be demonstrated in letters from departmental colleagues, chair, or referees.
The significance of professional service in the forms of task forces, committees (e.g. University of Kansas
Hospital and University of Kansas Physicians) and similar groups should be explained and your specific
role clarified.

IV. RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY ACTIVITIES: Instructions available online.
Opening Statement:
Provide a brief opening statement to orient the reviewers to the principal areas of scholarly activity and
provide your perspective. A description of your most significant contributions to the literature is often
helpful to the reviewers.
My research interests are clinical decision support, knowledge discovery, and creating information
environments to support personal health, research and patient safety and quality. My career working in
healthcare (operational responsibilities initially as a hospital administrator in the Air Force, EMR designer,
developer and operational director) and research experience position me to further the Institute of
Medicine’s vision of a Learning Healthcare System.
Curriculum Vitae Lemuel Russell Waitman P a g e | 21
University of Kansas School of Medicine Promotion and Tenure Curriculum Vitae
My research during my masters and doctoral dissertation in Biomedical Engineering was in applying neural
networks, rule induction, and knowledge discovery methods to critical care and perioperative
environments.
When I joined the newly formed Department of Biomedical Informatics in the Vanderbilt University School
of Medicine, I led their Computerized Provider Order Entry project, “WizOrder”. I furthered Vanderbilt’s
commercialization initiative with McKesson Corporation by leading the effort to successfully merge the
project with its commercial offspring, Horizon Expert Orders, and also oversaw deployment of other
McKesson inpatient clinical systems for nurse documentation (Horizon Expert Documentation) and bar-
code medication administration. Our group also developed applications for enterprise-wide medication
reconciliation and real-time adverse drug event surveillance and published research regarding their
effectiveness.
My initial task arriving at KUMC was to establish the division so that KUMC could be competitive for the
CTSA and NCI designation. In addition to achieving these strategic objectives for KUMC, milestones of my
progress include:
- Establish a master data sharing agreement and oversight process with the hospital, clinic, andk KUMC
to create an integrated data repository, HERON, based on the NIH funded i2b2 platform.
- Steady growth of HERON with regular monthly releases with continual new functionality and data
sources since April 2011 (over 1.4 billion facts; 2 million patients).
- Deploying REDCap across KUMC and assisting researchers with informatics needs ranging from student
projects, CTSA administrative processes, the Alzheimer’s Disease Center, and multicenter trials.
- Developed next generation video applications through our NSF funded project for dementia monitoring
that is also having its methods used for direct patient-provider interaction.
- KUMC as the leading institution for the PCORNet Greater Plains Collaborative (GPC) Clinical Data
Research Network where I serve as the principal investigator and as chair of the data committee for the
national network ,PCORnet (http://pcornet.org/about-pcornet/pcornet-committees-members/).
My research interest coming to KUMC was to develop our team and architecture such that we could also
advance informatics research as well as clinical research. We are now poised through the GPC to be able to
understand information systems ability to measure healthcare system performance, safety, and quality as
well as begin to develop methods to can measure the impact of the EMR and other systems to influence
care delivery. A major new capability is our GROUSE project to unify EMR, Tumor Registry, and insurance
claims data for observational study (https://informatics.gpcnetwork.org/trac/Project/wiki/GROUSE).
With the renewal of our CTSA program in 2017, we are also increasing analytic capacity for the campus
with dedicated analysis environments and also extending our data integration to encompass free text
physician notes and results (such as pathology and radiology impressions.

4. Other Evidence of Scholarship:
Includes clinical guidelines, policy documents, contributions to significant position statements by
professional organizations, and development of national examinations.
Since starting medical informatics at the University of Kansas Medical Center, our team has made the software we
author to create applications and the HERON integrated data repository open source
https://informatics.kumc.edu/work/browser and at https://github.com/kumc-bmi to promote research
collaborations and align with NIH goals regarding software sharing. This software has been downloaded and
utilized by collaborators nationally and internationally.
Similarly, for our PCORI funded work for PCORnet and the Clinical Data Research Network, the Greater Plains
Collaborative, we also follow an open source model for sharing both our development processes on our Wiki at
https://informatics.gpcnetwork.org/trac/Project and software via a code repository at
https://bitbucket.org/gpcnetwork/ as well as https://github.com/kumc-bmi from network medical informatics
investigators and teams.
