Library and computing services play an important role in Higher Education courses. The library or learning centre at the institution at which you are studying will provide resources for the day to day needs of your course and should be your first port of call. The University offers a number of specialist resources to complement those at your institution, and we encourage you to make use of the facilities and resources provided. This includes access to a wide range of electronically delivered resources.

This guide is intended as an introduction to the library and computing services provided by the University of Huddersfield. In addition, contact information about other student support services provided by the University is included.

be provided with a campus ID card which functions as your library card. This allows you physical access to the Library and the facility to borrow books etc. If you do not receive a card and would like to borrow materials, you can arrange to collect a card from Student Admissions and Records.

All students registered with the University of Huddersfield are entitled to use the library and computing facilities if they visit Huddersfield. When you register with the University you will be assigned a student number which allows you to use computing facilities and to access the extensive range of electronic information sources both on and off-campus. PortalPlus is your online ‘one stop shop’ that gives you access to a wealth of resources at the University of Huddersfield.

Log in using your University username which is a ‘U’ followed by the first seven digits of your student number (which you will receive shortly after you have started your course) and your password.

Your password is initially set to your date of birth: two digits for the day, three lower case letters for the month and two digits for the year eg 04sep9504sep95.

You will be asked to type your username and password (date of birth) into a small web based application. You will then be asked to enter a new password. Once you have done this, you will be able to click a button to activate your account.

The new password you choose will then apply for all the online services you use.

You need to change your password immediately by going to https://activate.hud.ac.ukhttps://activate.hud.ac.uk

Through PortalPlus, you will have instant access to:

To receive e-mail from outside the University, you must use your external e-mail address. For students, this is [email protected], for example [email protected]

Student Services comprises Wellbeing and Disability Services and the Careers and Employability Service. The centre or college where you are studying will have its own support services for students, but in addition, the University offers a wide range of information and guidance for all students through the Student Services website and online facilities.

Most financial matters which relate to students whilst they are studying are dealt with by the partner institution at which they are based. Students should therefore address their enquiries through the appropriate channels at their home institution.
