Course Description

Information Systems (IS) and Information Technology (IT) – or digital technologies – constitute integral and critical resources for managerial decision making. Over $1 trillion continues to be spent each year on technology and related information systems which constitutes an expensive and significant cost undertaking for most organizations. Hence, this course is designed to prepare undergraduate students to develop a working knowledge of digital technologies, to understand business opportunities created by digital technologies, and to gain awareness of how organizations leverage digital technologies to improve organizational processes and enhance related business strategies. This course will also teach students to develop mastery in using productivity tools that enable them to make informed business decisions. In short, this course focuses on increasing your technology literacy, improving your ability to intelligently discuss fundamental business IS concepts, investigating current IT capabilities and trends, and preparing students to confidently use productivity tools to make sound business decisions. ------------------------------------------- TL;DR (too long; didn’t read): You’re going to learn about information technology, with a focus on its application in a business setting.

Required Textbook &

Software

Title: Management Information Systems: Moving Business Forward Edition: 4th Author: Paige Rainer & Hugh Watson ISBN: 978-1-119-32109-5

You will need the textbook. You may also WANT a code to access additional content on Blackboard that is associated with the textbook. You cannot share access to this content. There are several options for purchasing. You ONLY need a copy of the textbook for this class! 1. Buy a hardcopy of the textbook and access code direct from Wiley for $71.95. Find a coupon code online to reduce this price! I have seen as much as a 40% discount (Rare)

http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/Section/id-829815.html 2. Buy from the campus bookstores for a 30-40% mark up on the price. 3. Rent or buy your book used through Chegg, textbookrentals.com, Amazon, etc. and (if you want it) buy access to the online content from Wiley or the bookstore.

- #3 not recommended if you want the online code. You’ll pay whatever these websites charge for just the book ($30-$50) PLUS you’ll have to pay Wiley for an access code the online content ($95). This might be the best if you are a Book Person.

I strongly recommend option #1 (buy both from Wiley for $72 + Shipping) Check for Coupons!

ISBN: 978-1-119-32109-5 TL;DR: You cannot pass this class if you don’t have the book’s content. I recommend buying access to online content and getting a hardcopy textbook direct from Wiley (link above).

Instructor Roles Professor: All matters related to lecture content, lecture exams, or the overall course should be directed to me. Do not take these questions to your teaching assistant for the labs. Teaching Assistants (TAs): All matters related to labs and most questions about grading should be directed to your TA. Your TA is responsible for labs, grading your work (including lecture-related work), and ensuring progress related to lab sessions. Any minor grade discrepancies (e.g., data entry error) or minor issues should be directed to your TA first. If a matter is not satisfactorily resolved, please forward your emails along with a summary of your dialogues to me. ------------------------------------------- TL;DR: See me for matters related to content, lecture exams or overall course. See your TA for questions about the lab and grading.

Communication Policies and Procedures

EMAIL IS THE BEST WAY TO REACH ME – Please don’t leave messages on my office phone. I only keep that phone to help support the telemarketing industry.

Email response time: Please do keep in mind that I manage many TAs and hundreds of students in a semester. Do not expect an email response within hours or over the weekend, although you may get one. In most cases you will receive a response from your TA or myself within 24 hours, but do give us a 48-hour period to get back to you. If you have not received a response within that period of time, please resend your message. If you have not heard back from your TA or myself in under 48 hours, do not resend your message. Ensuring a timely response: All emails that you send to me or your TA should include your section number (e.g., 004) in the subject line along with “2080”. Failure to provide this information will delay the response. ------------------------------------------- TL;DR: Give me and your TA at least 48 hours to respond to email. Resend your email after 48 hours if no response. Put your section number (i.e., 004) in the subject line of every email.

Course software/systems

Microsoft Access and Excel 2016 for Windows are used in this course. Unfortunately, earlier or later versions of Access and Excel or versions of this software made for Mac computers (even 2016) are not supported and should not be used, as the lab materials do not conform to differences across the software. Fortunately, there are several methods available to access the correct software: 1. The software is available in any of the computer labs in Linder Hall (211, 209, 210). 2. The software is available from the UC bookstore for < $10 (online for free) 3. The software can be accessed remotely on the lab computers, using any internet browser.

This method allows those with Macs or Windows computers to access the software. To set up your computer for this method, you need to see the lab technicians in LH 211A, or email [email protected] or call 513-556-7159.

WileyPLUS (online software similar to Blackboard) has an online version of the book, documents, lecture materials, study guides, and supplements. The website address is https://www.wileyplus.com. Blackboard (https://canopy.uc.edu ) will be used to submit your assignments, post some course documents and check your grades. It is each student’s responsibility to check the class page for news and/or announcements, as well as any changes and/or additions to the schedule. ------------------------------------------ TL;DR: You must use Microsoft Access and Excel 2016 for Windows. There are several ways to get it for minimal cost or free (see list above). WileyPLUS online is not required, but has study guides, etc. Blackboard will be used to submit assignments and see grades.

Grading Policies Grading:

All assignments/projects, quizzes, and exams are to be done independently, except where given explicit direction otherwise. Grades are based on the following components and point distribution:

Exams: Make-ups: Grade Appeals:

The following grading guidelines will be followed in this class.

Percent Grade Percent Grade

93.5 – 100 A 77.5 – 80.0 C+

90 – 93.5 A- 73.5 – 77.5 C

87.5 – 90 B+ 70 – 73.5 C-

83.5 – 87.5 B 65 – 70.0 D

80 – 83.5 B- < 65 F

Grades are NOT negotiable and no extra credit or bonus points will be given to any individual student. Please do not email me at the end of the semester because you are unhappy with your grade UNLESS you suspect that there has been a mistake in the calculation of your grade. I recommend keeping track of your grade throughout the class so that you know what score you’ll need on an assignment or exam to achieve the final grade you want. There are FIVE in-class exams related to the lecture content and two in-class exams related to the lab content. Exam content may include materials from the textbook, reading or lab assignments, handouts, guest speaker presentations or classroom discussion. Dates of the exams are posted on the class schedule. A grade of zero (0) will be assigned if any documents are removed, even briefly, from the classroom while exams are being taken. NO EXCEPTIONS. When exams are given to you in the classroom and/or my office for purposes of reviewing your score, they must be returned to me or a grade of zero (0) will be assigned to you for that exam. No make-up exams will be given for those students who do not notify me in advance or have official documentation as to the nature of their absence (i.e., doctor’s note, police accident report, etc.). This documentation must be dated (with the date of absence) and list the student’s name and a contact number for the source of the document. These documents will be verified. Any uncoordinated or undocumented excuse will result in a score of 0. “Excusing” absences and allowing make up work are determined at my discretion. Any make-up exam must be taken within one week of the absence; failure to comply will result in an automatic zero. The format of the make-up exam will be chosen at my discretion and may include essay questions. It is the student’s responsibility to give the professor at least 24 hours (weekdays) advanced notification for setting up make-up date/time. For academic, athletic, and military obligations, situations will be examined case-by-case for each individual. As you can drop up to four of them, PEQ (Practice Exam Questions) cannot be made up, even for “excused” absences. Your final grade will reflect an assessment of your performance in both lecture and lab. A great deal of effort will be put into grading to ensure that grades are equitable. However, if you feel that your grade does not reflect your performance, you may resubmit your work for re-grading consideration. If there is an error in the posting of your score of calculation of your

Late Assignments:

grade, please bring this to your TA. All other re-grade requests are to be submitted to me. Regardless of who is re-grading your work, guidelines for this process are as follows: 1. Submit the original work along with statement of why you feel the grade is incorrect or should be re-graded.

2. You must submit your request within one week of when your graded assignment becomes available (unless announced otherwise).

3. Your request will be reviewed and a response given to you within seven days.

4. Your work may be re-graded in its entirety. This could increase or decrease your existing score. In the event your classmate has received credit for an incorrect answer AND you refer to it as proof that you should be given credit, I will correct and lower your classmate’s grade to reflect his/her true score (i.e., your classmate’s grade will go down). Failure to follow prescribed guideline as stated above will result in no change to your grade – absolutely no exceptions.

One week following the date an assignment grade is posted online, your grade remains final!

This means that grades will not be reassessed or altered at the end of the semester, unless it relates to an assignment/exam given in the final week. It is your responsibility to make sure your correct grades are reflected online; your grade will not be changed after this point under no circumstances, regardless of the reason for the error. Always be prepared to show proof of your work in the event there is a mistake or an error made on our part – so, keep your emails and don’t throw away any work. Late assignments are not accepted. Hence, you will automatically receive a grade of zero for late assignments. Technology-related excuses for late assignments are not acceptable. This includes, but is not limited to: - “My internet was down.” - “I saved it to my usb drive and it’s not working/got lost.” - “I emailed it to the wrong address.” - “My computer died/blew up/caught fire/etc.” - “My laptop/book/book bag/car was stolen.” - “I emailed it to myself, but I never got it.” - “I submitted it through the incorrect link online” - “I don’t know what happened, but I definitely did it.”

Plan accordingly! To avoid such issues: - Don’t wait until the last minute to start an assignment, in the event that something

malfunctions. - Save frequently. Consider setting up the auto-save feature in MS-Office. - Save to multiple locations. I usually save my important documents to three places: my

computer, my jump drive, and I email them to myself.

DO NOT SAVE TO THE DESKTOP IN THE LABS. YOUR FILES WILL BE ERASED WHEN YOU LOGOUT! In fact, I recommend not saving to the lab computers at all. ------------------------------------------- TL;DR: Sorry, but this one is important. See above and read carefully.

Course components

What to expect at lecture class each day: In the posted course schedule you will see the general topic and a reading list for each class. You are expected to have read and made notes for each class and any corresponding assignment. As a first level of preparation, you should be very familiar with the assigned reading material(s). Think about what you’ve read, discussed, and experienced, then reflect on how they are connected to the issues in an organizational setting. Finally, make note of questions or issues that are unclear. The sequencing of the course topics will give you opportunities to reflect on prior topics and how they may be recognized in the current topic. You are also encouraged to share interesting and relevant hyper-links or URLs to websites with me that may be integrated into the content of the course. We will end class with PEQ – Practice Exam Questions. The PEQs are designed to not only encourage attendance, but allows you to reflect on what you’ve learned that day and identify possible gaps in your understanding and to prepare for exams. Lecture Exams: There will be a total of six exams related to lecture content, each covering 2-4 chapters of reading. Exams are intended to evaluate mastery of topics covered during lectures. Exams are not cumulative. Detailed information will be provided during class. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What to expect at lab class each day: In the posted lab schedule you will see a general topic. Your TA will cover the concepts related to this topic when you meet. If he/she covers all the content for that day, you may use remaining time to work on your lab assignment and get help from your TA. However, with approximately 30 students and limited time to cover material and help everyone, you may not have enough time to get the help you need. Thus, you are required to read the lab material prior to coming to class and to start the assignment and complete as much as you can. Unannounced quizzes of the lab reading prior to the start of class may be given to help you stay motivated to keep up with the reading. Lab Exams: There will be two exams pertaining to the lab component of the course. Exams will test knowledge of MS Excel and MS Access, respectively. You are expected to attend each class and lab, to be prepared, and to contribute to the class. Please note that attendance affects your grade in that if you are not in class/meeting, you cannot learn or participate. ------------------------------------------- TL;DR: Each lecture - We’ll cover chapter content, then do practice exam questions. Each lab – TA will cover content and you may have some time to work on homework. Read the lab before coming to class so you can use your time and the TAs wisely and so you’ll be prepared for any quizzes. You’ll be tested over Excel and Access in the lab.

Classroom Etiquette

Classroom behavior: Inappropriate and disruptive classroom behavior (inappropriate language and gestures, class disruptions, including web surfing or use of electronic devices, disrespect to other students or instructor) will not be tolerated and will result in possible removal from the class and /or disciplinary action. Please silence your cell phones before class starts. Use of laptops:

In the first four weeks of class, I permit laptops to be used during class for note taking and PowerPoints ONLY. At four weeks, I will reevaluate this policy. Continued use is contingent on responsible use on the part of all students. If I receive ONE complaint that someone is distracted by others’ web surfing, the laptop policy will be revoked. If one of your fellow students is willing to provide me with your name, don’t be surprised if you get called out in class. PLEASE don’t incur the wrath of 200 of your peers who have to hand-write their notes because it was your turn in Words with Friends or you want to catch a new Pokemon. If you absolutely must check your email or surf the web during class, please do so discreetly and quickly. The first two rows of the classroom are designated as a “laptop free zone”. If you find it distracting to sit behind someone using a laptop, please sit up front. ------------------------------------------- TL;DR: Respect others. The first two rows of seats in class=no laptop use. Anywhere else laptops are fine for notes ONLY. If this policy is abused, it will be revoked. Silence phones.

Academic Honesty

I support the University of Cincinnati’s policy on academic dishonesty. You will be protected by and expected to conduct yourself, in accordance with this policy. For a complete description see: http://www.uc.edu/conduct/Academic_Integrity.html. All grade sanctions must be reported to the University Judicial Affairs Office, which may decide to take further action. Academic Dishonesty includes more than using someone else’s work as your own. Other examples include not citing the work of others where appropriate, allowing others to use your work in completing their assignments (unless this is allowed by the instructor). Dishonest students suffer the risk of failing the course and being expelled from the university, and I will make an effort to ensure that academic dishonesty is subject to the maximum possible penalty. If you give test answers or papers to students in the same or other sections, this will be considered cheating and everyone involved will be equally at fault. Any Internet searching or Phone use during a test will be considered Cheating! ------------------------------------------- TL;DR: Don’t cheat. Just don’t do it.

Inclement Weather

I will cancel classes due to weather only if the University cancels all classes. Information concerning weather closings can be obtained through the University’s website. Please see the inclement weather policy located at (http://www.uc.edu/news/NR.aspx?id=12766) for further information. ------------------------------------------- TL;DR: Class probably will never be cancelled due to weather.

Unforeseen Issues

If something occurs which prevents you from attending class regularly, submitting assignments, or otherwise affects your classroom performance, come talk to me ASAP! We may be able to work out an arrangement so you don’t have to re-take this class.

Disclaimer

I reserve the right to deviate from the schedule and any changes to the schedule will be posted online or announced in class. It’s your responsibility to remain up-to-date. Scheduled dates are subject to change, but changes will be discussed in class. Students are expected to attend classes and are responsible for obtaining information from missed classes from other students (including changes to due dates and assignments). “I didn’t know about ____ because I missed class that day” is not an acceptable excuse.
