Eating smart. Eat three small meals a day, or five even smaller ones if you're always hungry at 4 p.m. Good desk snacks include almonds, an apple, a banana, raisins or a low calorie fruit drink like Cranberry Light. And when you shop, shop "around the edges" of the grocery store. That's where the “real” food is.

Club News ESPARTO/CAPAY VALLEY December Update I am sure that we are all pleased to finally begin our enjoyable project meetings for 4-H, so please be sure to attend as many as you possibly can and mark each on your calendar. I would like to thank all 4-H members that participated in preparing and performing for the Guinda Grange Haunted House. I also appreciate all participants that maintained the amusing booths. Thanks to all of your ef-forts, the party was a tremendous success! All contributors during Achievement Night also deserve great appreciation. And con-gratulations to all members that earned an award at Achievement Night! Thank you! January Update Thank you to all Esparto Capay Valley 4-Hers for attending our Christmas Meeting. We are grateful for the good job that Jake Pillard and Garrett Johnson did organizing our Christmas Party! Also, Carol Dittmar,

WILLOW OAK

Our last meeting was held November 13, 2006. We donated our pumpkins from the pumpkin decorating contest to Woodland Memorial hospital and we got a letter from them thanking us. Many people from our club earned awards from achievement night though not many of our members showed up to accept them. It’s Christmas time again and the theme for the Christmas Parade is “Home for the Holidays.” Our 50th annual Pedro Card Party is coming. The date is January 20 and more details will be given as we come closer to the event. A reminder to all 4-hers who haven’t yet turned in enrollment forms, they are due to the 4H office on January 1st. Get them in or you won’t be able to show an animal at the Spring Show. Laurie Hayes, and the Creative Arts and Crafts Group deserve great appreciation for providing decorations for the special Christ-mas meeting. Thank you to everyone who brought their delicious dishes. Also, thank you for filling the table with gifts. Without your contribution, we wouldn’t have had a successful gift exchange. Sorry that the rain prevented us from caroling at the trailer park, we hope we will be able to next year. Con-gratulations to Esparto Capay Valley 4-H Club for earning such a generous donation from Full Belly Farm. You deserved it for working so hard at the Petting Zoo for the Hoes Down Festival. More importantly, thank you to Paul Muller and Dru Rivers for giving us this contribution to our club! Con-gratulations and thank you to everyone! Have a fantastic winter break and happy holi-days! By: Margot Dittmar

HILLTOP HORSE

Our club met on November 14th and was excited to welcome 3 new members to our group. Toney & Reannen with their new horse Fae and Noel who is looking to lease a horse. Kacey is excited to be able to start using her new horse Glitter Sands this year. The group decided to have 30 minutes of play time with their horses prior to com-mencing each riding session. We had a riding

meeting on November 18th. We are cur-rently looking for an indoor arena for our winter project meetings. Currently we are designing our t-shirts and sweatshirts for the club and we are always open for new ideas and suggestions and welcome any other club members to attend any of our meetings and share their ideas.

Charlotte’s Web Fundraiser There is an exciting opportunity for 4-H to raise money and awareness. For every movie ticket purchased for Charlotte's Web through www.fourhcouncil.edu, a donation of $1 will be made by Hollywood Movie Money to support our state 4-H program. Charlotte’s Web features the 4-H Emblem many times, and the themes portrayed speak directly to the great work that 4-H does in developing youth – building friendships, commitment to goals and having fun!

Reviewers For Clover Safe Notes Needed The State 4-H Office is still looking for volunteers to review the Clover Safe Notes that pertain to sewing, power saw safety, and rabbits. The reviewers must have some expertise in working with youth in these areas as well as some subject matter expertise. If interested, you can contact Mignonne Pollard at [email protected].

Clever Clovers 4-H club has been very busy with community service this month. We did Toys-for-Tots, adopted 2 families, sent care packages to soldiers in Iraq, and played piano in convalescent homes and a church in Woodland. The biggest thing that we did was Toys for Tots. Toys for Tots is where we sort and then give out toys with the Ma-rine Corps of Yolo County. 4-H kids and adults sorted toys for 3 days! That is how many toys there were. Clever Clovers helped to pass out toys to needy families. This year there were over 300 families. Another thing we did was send care packages to soldiers in Iraq. There were toiletries, candy, jerky, and other fun things. We hope the soldiers were happy to get them. Clever Clovers also did Adopt-a-Family. We adopted 2 families. We gave them all kinds of things including, toys, clothes, dishes and

other fun stuff. My brother, his friends and I wrapped, decorated and labeled the gifts and they were delivered. Lots of people gave lots of gifts. I think the families will be happy. The last thing is that my Cultural Arts project is playing piano at Convalescent homes around Woodland. My brother and I are playing Christmas Carols and Classical music to the residents. My youngest brother is in charge of candy canes. We also are playing at a local church for their programs. 4-H members have been busy. We hope everyone had happy holidays. Clever Cov-ers enjoyed being part of these community service projects. By Liam Campbell
