Istanbul, TurkeyThis legendary metropolisstraddling the Bosphorus Straitis one of the loveliest citiesin Europe and most splendidin Asia. Its position at thecrossroads for trade andcultural exchange over

centuries have filled the city with beautifularchitecture and magnificent monumentsinspired by the region’s diverse faiths. Its historic areas, a UNESCO World Heritagesite, include the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palaceand the Blue Mosque.

Yalta, UkraineConsidering the natural beauty of the historicCrimean Peninsula’s mountainous southerncoast of majestic, 1,500-metre peaks risingdramatically from the Black Sea, its lowerslopes cloaked in a mantle of Mediterraneanoak, pistachio and juniper, it is no wonderthat Yalta was a favourite seaside retreatfor czars, commissars and literary giants, including Leo Tolstoy and Anton Chekhov.During the late 19th century, the Russiannobility flocked here to bask in the abundantsunshine and breathe the invigoratingsea air. In 1911, Czar Nicholas II, the lastof the Romanovs, built Livadia Palace, aRenaissance-style mansion of white granite,as a summer residence for his family. It was at Livadia, in February 1945, thehistoric Yalta Conference was held, whereFranklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill andJosef Stalin determined the post-World War IIstatus of Germany and Eastern Europe.

SevastopolThe Crimean port of Sevastopol isbuilt upon terraced hills overlookinga magnificent natural harbour. The former headquarters of Russia’smighty Black Sea Fleet, whichguarded the country’s southern border

under the czars and the Soviets, today is anopen-air museum dotted with hundreds ofimpressive monuments and memorials, recentlyrediscovered as the port remained closed tothe outside world until 1990. The SevastopolPanorama Museum offers a sweeping view ofthe city and harbour and impressive displaysdepicting the 1855 Battle of Sevastopol, a keyengagement in the Crimean War. Nearby arethe impressive excavated ruins of Khersones—aGreek trading settlement established in421 B.C.—and the museum showcasing itsartifacts, and Bakhchisarai—Garden Palace—the opulent seat of the Tatar Khans who ruledCrimea from 1427 to 1783. The Khan’s Palaceis noted for its harmonious blend of Persian,Turkish and Italian architectural elements andits legendary Fountain of Tears, which inspiredAleksandr Pushkin’s great poem The Fountainof Bakhchisaray.

Gothic, Northern European and Moorish styles blend together seamlessly in Crimea’s stunning 19th-centuryAlupka Palace, featuring beautifully landscaped grounds with a staircase leading down to the sea.

OdessaFounded by Catherine the Great in 1789to guard the southern approaches to herempire, Odessa, “The Pearl of the Black Sea,”is a graceful city of tree-lined avenues andFranco-Italian architecture. The city’s iconicfeature is the majestic Potemkin Stairs, extending from the harbour to the city centreand immortalized in Sergei Eisenstein’scinema classic, The Battleship Potemkin. You may choose to stroll down tree-linedDeribasovskaya Street, the city’s livelycommercial heart; relax in a café in theglass-vaulted Passazh Corridor; or visit theornate Odessa Opera House and Ballet, rebuiltby Austrian architects in 1887. Beneath thecity, through the sandstone on which Odessalies, is a vast network of catacombs that wereunearthed during the 19th century and havesince served as hiding places and smugglingroutes during World War II.

Constanta, RomaniaLegend has it that Jason and the Argonautslanded in Constanta after finding theGolden Fleece. This principal seaport inRomania was established as the Greek tradingsettlement of Tomis in the sixth centuryB.C., later ruled by Romans, Byzantinesand Ottoman Turks, and today remains amagnificent composite of all these civilizations.

In the Archaeological and NaturalHistory Museum, intriguing artifactsfrom the Greco-Roman era include thethird-century B.C. Glykon Serpent. One of themost notable pieces of Roman archaeologicalfragments is a third-century mosaic thatmay have been part of the ancient Romanbaths once located near the museum’slower terrace. Today, many elegant mansionsand hotels remain from the 19th century, whenKing Carol I decided to revive the city as aport and seaside resort.

Nessebur, BulgariaThe small port of Nessebur is asixth-century B.C. Greek-founded townand a UNESCO World Heritage site.Despite covering only one-tenth ofone square mile along the rocky coast,Nessebur is a synthesis of centuries-old

civilizations and proudly preserves11 Byzantine-influenced churches andmany fine 19th-century timber houses. The 13th- to 14th-century stone and redbrickPantokrator Church is the town’s loveliest andbest preserved. In the centre of Old Nessebur, not far from the Byzantine town gate, are theremnants of St. Sofia Church, built in the latefifth and early sixth centuries.

Centuries of cultural traditions and beliefs are ondisplay in Nessebur’s many well-preserved churches.

In 1945, Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin met for thehistoric Yalta Conference in Livadia Palace in the Crimea.

In the Footstepsof HistoryA highway of commerce, conquest andideas since the fifth century B.C., thestunningly beautiful Crimean Peninsulaand surrounding Black Sea countriesshowcase a 21st-century tapestry ofcultural treasures woven together over

millennia of ruling Greeks, Goths, Huns, Ottoman Turks,Golden Horde Tatars, Mongols, Venetians and Genovese.

Walk in the footsteps of Greek colonists whofounded the city of Khersones, the Roman Legionswho arrived in the first century A.D. andCatherine the Great, who on her first visit in 1787to this idyllic setting and mild climate bloomingwith lush flora, was greeted by a cavalcade of12,000 Tatar horsemen dressed in ceremonialuniform, who escorted her to the Khan’s Palace.

Explore the cultural treasures left byRussian royalty, who subsequently flocked to theCrimean Riviera and built lavish summer palaces thatstill display the opulent social legacy of the czars.

You will even have an opportunity to stroll throughthe corridors and garden of Livadia, Czar Nicholas II’sfavourite summer residence and later the site of the world-changing Yalta Conference in February of 1945, wherethe “Big Three,” U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt,British Prime Minister Winston Churchill andRussian General Secretary Joseph Stalin, met todetermine Europe’s postwar reorganization.

Learn more about the Crimean War, the firstmodern war, which was famously documented inAlfred Lord Tennyson’s poem “The Charge of theLight Brigade,” and how it illuminated the efforts ofa young British nurse, Florence Nightingale, whosework pioneered advances in the nursing professionand inspired Swiss social activist Henry Dunant toimplement the Red Cross Movement shortly thereafter.

A relevantly new destination now open to theWestern world, the deep blue waters of the Black Sea,the Crimea’s spectacular scenery, expansive vineyardsand endearing people beckon travellers to delve intoits rich history.

The fifth-century Greek trading settlement of Khersoneswas one of the first democracies run by elected officials.
