Students entering the 4th grade in Fall 2016 have the option of attending one or both of the primary programs and/or taking courses on the Baylor campus.

Creative Problem Solving Camp: Space As the International Space Station is constructed above the Earth, students in Discoveries 2016, will learn and use creative problem solving skills to investigate a "mess" related to families and children living in a space station. Discoveries will be made by teams of students in areas such as training, life support, recreation, nutrition, communication, and transportation. Hands on discovery and cooperate group problem solving will feature experiences for those who join the crew of Discoveries 2016. Activities will culminate in a final presentation. Parents are welcome to travel to space to visit the space station their children have helped create on Friday afternoon. Supplies: Daily sack lunch

Perspectives Explore the regions of Texas using the outdoor learning spaces at Woodway Elementary. Determine the connection between climate and plants. Compare and contrast how early settlers and Native Americans viewed and used each region. Make animal track i.d. cards. Investigate insects and other living organizations and categorize them as beneficial, harmful, or neutral. Play Botany Bingo. Learn about organisms that are considered invasive in Texas. Work in a variety of medium to represent flora, fauna and landscapes of the various regions. Learn about the legacy of Lady Bird Johnson and the importance of the East Texas Pinewoods to her story. Beyond the Fairytale: Jasmine Jones Together, Gwe will take a sneak peek at classic movies and stories and devise a prequel or sequel to our favorite ones. On the last day, we will showcase their ideas by acting them out. Supplies: None

UYP Yearbook: Jordan Barlow We will learn about journalism/photojournalism. We will look at sources such as National Geographic and (possibly) hear from some journalism students. We will look at what makes photography meaningful and how a picture can convey so much emotion. We will also learn how to interview, and then go out into the real world to practice our skills! We will be paired into teams: an interviewer and a photographer. We will travel to different UYP classes to interview teachers and students and document the class for our UYP Yearbook! Supplies: None

Ancient Egypt on Trial: Laura Rickabaugh In this unit, we will learn various details about the Ancient Egyptians. We will learn how the Nile influenced their lives, information about the building of the pyramids and the mummification of citizens, and the lives and influence of many leaders such as Ramses the Great and Queen Hatshepsut. As we learn about Ancient Egypt, we will develop skills of using research to develop an argument and participate in a debate on controversial issues of this time period. Supplies: None

As a culminating challenge, you will incorporate these concepts into a rocket you design, build, and launch and see which one will propel the farthest distance. Supplies: None

You will be introduced to basic concepts of computer programming while we make our own games and simulations. All will start by making a 3D Frogger-style highway-crossing game, including designing the 3D graphics. We will then experiment with simple ecosystem simulations. Finally, we will design our own game in small groups. We will be using the University of Colorado’s Scalable Game Design system. Supplies: Student email account

Have you ever created your own Zentanble, or patterned, drawing or design? Would you like to join others to develop a book of images of which you can have your own copy to take home? Join us this week for Zentangle Zootopia, a class in which we will draw from ancient, traditional, and not-so-traditional designs and patterns to create a “unique to this class” Coloring Book! You will receive a copy of the completed and bound book to take home. Come enjoy this relaxing method of new popular art form? Supplies: None

Stories Surround Us: Intro to Journalism: Alicia Constant Have you ever wished you could meet famous people – President Obama, for example – and ask them questions? Then perhaps journalism is the career for you? And it’s not just famous people who have stories to tell: Everyone has a story. During this class, you will develop the basic interviewing, writing, and photography skills necessary to discover and tell the stories that are all around you. By the end of the class, your group will write, design, and publish your own newspaper. You will also learn what it’s like to be a real-world journalist. Supplies: None

Brain Power: Teri Lloyd How well do you know your brain? Did you know the physical makeup of male brains is different than female brains? Or perhaps you knew the teen brain doesn’t fully finish developing until the age of 25? This class starts with a dissection of a “fake” brain and concludes with a foam brain collage personally designed by you. Each day, you’ll discover something new about yourself and your brain. We’ll examine how your brain responds to different senses through taste and smell tests and investigate your reaction time to pressure situations with games such as “Pie Face”. You’ll also learn how to make your brain “Grow.” Sign up and experience the Power of Your Brain. Supplies: None

CSI – Cookie Jar Mystery: Teri Lloyd Welcome to The Cookie Jar Mystery: An exciting adventure in the world of forensic science! In Mrs. Teri’s classroom, a curious crime has taken place: her favorite cookie jar has been broken and not surprisingly, some of her delicious, homemade cookies have been eaten! In The Cookie Jar Mystery, you will analyze writing and ink samples, conduct blood typing and DNA tests, and look at hair, shoe, and fiber evidence. The week will end with a mock court trial where all the evidence is presented and the culprit revealed. Will you be the one to solve the mystery? Supplies: None

Brain Benders: Jennifer Traudt In this course, you will get to think in a way outside of the “norm”. Every day there will be different brain benders, such as Destination Imagination instant challenges, optical illusions, Minute to Win It activities, and many others, such as rebuses, hink pinks, and more! You will learn new ways to see things and solve problems. At the end of the week, you will make up your own challenges/brain benders and share it with others to solve. Supplies: None

Painting Start to Finish: Kathe Barbur Do you want to paint like the Masters? You don’t have to be a DaVinci, Monet, or Van Gogh to fashion your own painting, from start to finish? Come join us to create your own original work of art beginning with building your own stretcher frame, stretching the canvas, applying the gesso, drawing the design, and painting with acrylics like a professional! In addition, we will view master paintings in Baylor’s Martin Museum of Art and be able to tour the painting studio. All you have to do is bring your ideas and don’t forget your creativity! Supplies: Egg carton and an extra large t-shirt

Stories Surround Us: Intro to Journalism: Alicia Constant Have you ever wished you could meet famous people – President Obama, for example – and ask them questions? Then perhaps journalism is the career for you? And it’s not just famous people who have stories to tell: Everyone has a story. During this class, you will develop the basic interviewing, writing, and photography skills necessary to discover and tell the stories that are all around you. By the end of the class, your group will write, design, and publish your own newspaper. You will also learn what it’s like to be a real-world journalist. Supplies: None

Ancient Egypt on Trial: Laura Rickabaugh In this unit, you will learn various details about the Ancient Egyptians. You will learn how the Nile influenced their lives, information about the building of the pyramids and the mummification of citizens, and the lives and influence of many leaders such as Ramses the Great and Queen Hatshepsut. As you learn about Ancient Egypt, you will develop skills of using research to develop an argument and participate in a debate on controversial issues of this time period. Supplies: None

iCivics: Diane Williams Join us as we participate in simulations to explore and build important leadership skills. You will research local community issues, play iCivics games, and explore service learning. LEGO® Animation: Joyce Anderson Join us for a “block” party with Legos! You don’t have to be a master builder to come join our “block” party. You will learn how to use Stop Animation and LEGO® pieces and characters to create miniature, imaginative worlds. Piece by piece and brick by brick, you will create your worlds, and through the power of animation will bring them to life! Supplies: None

Recreation: UYP staff will organize an assortment of recreational activities. Students will be escorted to their afternoon course after recreation time.

We will explore some of the most well-known characters and the myths they are based on. In the end, you will research your favorites and finish the week by creating trading cards and bio poems. Brain Benders: Jennifer Traudt In this course, you will get to think in a way outside of the “norm”. Every day there will be different brain benders, such as Destination Imagination instant challenges, optical illusions, Minute to Win It activities, and many others, such as rebuses, hink pinks, and more! You will learn new ways to see things and solve problems. At the end of the week, you will make up your own challenges/brain benders and share it with others to solve. Supplies: None

Do Your Rocket?: Laura Rickabaugh This is a STEM unit in which you will delve into the topics of gravity, Newton’s three laws of motion, air pressure, friction, and aerodynamics. Daily mini-experiments will reinforce these lessons. As a culminating challenge, you will incorporate these concepts into a rocket you design, build, and launch and see which one will propel the farthest distance. Supplies: None

Pop Art is POPular!: Kathe Barbur Pop Art is an art movement that emerged in the 1950s in Britain and the US, yet is now most associated with the work of New York artists of the early 1960s such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, and Claes Oldenburg. These artists drew on popular imagery in the media and comic books becoming part of an international phenomenon in various cities around the world. Join us as we view some of these original Pop Artists’ work and use today’s imagery from comic books to candy wrappers, creating your unique form of POPular Art! CSI – Cookie Jar Mystery: Teri Lloyd Welcome to The Cookie Jar Mystery: An exciting adventure in the world of forensic science! In Mrs. Teri’s classroom, a curious crime has taken place: her favorite cookie jar has been broken and not surprisingly, some of her delicious, homemade cookies have been eaten! In The Cookie Jar Mystery, you will analyze writing and ink samples, conduct blood typing and DNA tests, and look at hair, shoe, and fiber evidence. The week will end with a mock court trial where all the evidence is presented and the culprit revealed. Will you be the one to solve the mystery? Supplies: None

Brain Power: Teri Lloyd How well do you know your brain? Did you know the physical makeup of male brains is different than female brains? Or perhaps you knew the teen brain doesn’t fully finish developing until the age of 25? This class starts with a dissection of a “fake” brain and concludes with a foam brain collage personally designed by you. Each day, you’ll discover something new about yourself and your brain. We’ll examine how your brain responds to different senses through taste and smell tests and investigate your reaction time to pressure situations with games such as “Pie Face”. You’ll also learn how to make your brain “Grow.” Sign up and experience the Power of Your Brain. Supplies: None
